'Imagine a lush tropical island slipping beneath the waves': Drowned island the size of Iceland found off Brazil
An undersea volcanic plateau in the southwestern Atlantic was a tropical island 45 million years ago.
In 2018, Brazilian and British scientists were exploring the seafloor around a volcanic plateau known as the Rio Grande Rise when they spotted rocks that looked like they belonged on dry land.
Watching video relayed from their remotely operated submersible 650 meters (2,100 feet) below the surface, unusual red clay layers caught their attention. "You just don't find red clay on the seabed," said Bramley Murton, a marine geologist from the National Oceanographic Centre in Southampton, U.K., who was on the expedition. "The deposits looked like tropical soils," he explained.
In a recent study, the team showed that the clay's distinctive mineral makeup could have formed only by open-air weathering in tropical heat and humidity. It's the latest in a string of discoveries hinting that this patch of ocean, 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) from Brazil's coast, was once an island.
"Imagine a lush tropical island slipping beneath the waves and lying frozen in time. That's what we've uncovered," said Murton, who coauthored the study. He and colleagues think the island would have been similar in size to Iceland (about a fifth of the Rio Grande Rise's total area).

A Market Stall in Batavia, Andries Beeckman (attributed to), Albert Eckhout (rejected attribution), c. 1640 - c. 1666
The Dutch and Malay inscriptions on the piece of paper in the lower right corner identify this as a Dutch painting of subjects studied on the spot. Most of the fruit varieties are found only in Indonesia, the former Dutch East Indies, and were not exported to Europe at the time. The combination of figures from different countries suggests that the setting is most probably the very cosmopolitan Batavia, modern-day Jakarta.8 A Chinese merchant, recognizable as such from his distinctive goatee, moustache and remarkably long fingernails, is counting coins in a fruit stall set off with bamboo partitions. Standing on the left is a woman wearing a typically Javanese sarong and kebaya and holding a small cigar in one hand while placing a durian upright with the other. A second Javanese woman in the middle is lifting a small bundle of leaf wrappers out of a small Japanese lacquered casket, probably betel leaves. A boy behind her is picking a banana from the bunch hanging on the right. A striking salmon-crested cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis) is perched on the bamboo screen at the back.
Andries Beeckman went to great lengths to depict the huge diversity of tropical fruit as faithfully as possible, but he was clearly not a professional still-life painter. The different varieties are easily distinguished, but their textures are not convincing. Laid out on the table – some with numbers matching the list on the piece of paper (the latter are given between brackets below) – are, on the far left, from top to bottom, rambutans (Nephelium lappaceum, no. 1), langsats (Lansium domesticum, no. 3) and starfruit (Averrhoa carambola, no. 2). Beside them are a partly cut pomelo (Citrus maxima, no. 4) and durians, one of them sliced (Durio, no. 5). The three small pieces of red fruit at bottom left are water or Malay apples (Syzygium aqueum or Syzygium malaccense, no. 6) or Java apples (Syzygium samarangense), and lying to their right are mangoes (Mangifera indica, no. 7) and pineapples (Ananas comosus, no. 8). Below the two pineapples in the centre are jackfruit, one halved (Artocarpus Heteropyllus, no. 9) and several small mangosteens, some opened (Garcinia mangostana, no. 10). On the right are bananas (no. 11), five coconuts and a halved one (Cocos nucifera), and at the very front cashew apples (Anacardium occidentale). The fruit cut in two in the Japanese casket is probably a sort of lime called a Calamondin orange (Citrofortunella microcarpa).
The Rijksmuseum painting is a reduced version of a canvas from an anonymous series of scenes of foreign peoples and produce that decorated the walls of Schloss Pretzsch an der Elbe in Saxony until 1828 (fig. a).9 In the nineteenth century they were removed, first to Berlin and then to Schloss Schwedt an der Oder in Brandenburg.10 They were seen there in the 1930s by Thomsen, who rather hesitantly attributed them to Albert Eckhout and dated them around the middle of the seventeenth century.11 Schwedt was completely destroyed in the closing days of the Second World War, and all that is left of the works of art are pre-war black-and-white photographs making it clear that the attribution to Eckhout is untenable.12
The connection with the canvas from Schloss Pretzsch also led to this Market Stall in Batavia being wrongly attributed to Eckhout or his circle in the past.13 It is woodenly executed, compositionally clumsy, and is not of the kind of Brazilian subject for which Eckhout is known. Minor differences between the two paintings show that they were not copied after each other but seem to share the same or a similar source. The way in which the fruit and cockatoo are depicted displays a clear resemblance to the only known still life by Andries Beeckman (fig. b), and, interestingly, one of the scenes from the series in Pretzsch castle was definitely based on watercolours by him,14 so the present canvas could also be by Beeckman or someone from his circle.
Very little is known about the picture’s provenance, although there are a few early records of an Indonesian fruit market, and since A Market Stall in Batavia is the only surviving work of that nature there is a great temptation to associate it with those early sources. There is, however, nothing that can be said for certain. Around 1660 Jan Vos wrote an ode about paintings in the collection of Joan Huydecooper, among them an ‘East Indies fruit market’: ‘Who has driven me from the north to the east? / I find myself in the market of the East Indies coast. / Here nature displays her fruit as food for life. / The sight makes my mouth desire the beautiful harvest, / Thus is my stomach now sorely overburdened. / Greedy eyes are not soon satiated’.15 It may well be that the poet was referring to the Rijksmuseum canvas.16 There is a second mention of an ‘East Indies fruit market’ a little later in the collection of burgomaster Mattheus van den Broucke of Dordrecht.17 It is far from obvious that it refers to this Market Stall in Batavia. His picture was one of a series of which the others were described as ‘One ditto, with East Indies animals and fruit’, ‘One ditto, being East Indies lodgings, ‘One ditto’, ‘Three ditto, East Indies women’ and ‘A Moorish woman’.18 It is very possible that the Rijksmuseum painting was also part of a larger ensemble of that kind.

Major Project
- Further Refining
After my presentation we came to the conclusion that I need to compact the idea even further, we spoke about potential directions to take the idea to make it as successful as possible. We spoke about creating an exhibition/campaign for a museum, I like this idea as it gives me more to create and also allows me to explore parts of my original idea. We also spoke about looking into one part of steel, so for that I want to explore steel structures. Potentially creating a series of posters alongside a concertina to promote and celebrate the steel industry. For this project I now need to research into past campaigns and designs from museums and look at what makes them successful.
Kelham Island Museum, Sheffield
Established in 2021, the charity cares for the city’s collections of art, archaeology, social and industrial history, and natural science, alongside the Guild of St George’s John Ruskin collection and is home to the Ken Hawley Collection Trust’s Hawley Tool Collection.
We work with our communities to tell remarkable stories of Sheffield and its people, and celebrate its reputation for excellence in craft, making and innovation. Together with local, regional and national partners, we showcase home-grown creative talent and bring outstanding cultural experiences to the city.

Magna Science Adventure Centre,
set in the former Templeborough steelworks in South Yorkshire. It is a vast building, a third of a mile long and 150 feet high. Four pavilions house over 100 hands-on exhibits themed on Air, Earth, Fire and Water, the ‘elements’ needed for making steel, where you can discover science, technology and the region’s industrial heritage. The spectacular Big Melt Show re-creates the story of the steelworks.

- Art Exhibitions
Although these are different subjects to mine I still find it relevant to understand how it drew the audience how It uses a narrative that is engaging and also i can use them as inspiration in how my idea could look.
Lokame Tharavadu
The core idea of this exhibition, Lokame Tharavadu or 'the world is one family', is drawn from the verses of a Malayalam poem written by Vallathol Narayana Menon, which appeals to the universal spirit of humanity. Departments of Tourism and Culture and Alappuzha Heritage Project. The art exhibition is hosted at five venues in Alappuzha.
Rosângela Rennó: Small Ecology of the Image
The Brazilian artist Rosângela Rennó has been obsessively studying images and their relationship to truth and dominant narratives for over 35 years. comprises 130 photography and video based works. From spectral, family-album portraits of soldiers in uniform that Rennó obscures with red tint, to granular images of street protesters creating a new view on history.
Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty
Alexander McQueen's dashing creativity was expressed through the technical artistry of his designs and the dramatic intensity of his fashion shows. Drawing on avant-garde installation and performance art, these were also emphatically autobiographical. McQueen fearlessly challenged the conventions of fashion.
Against The Odds
Designed by C&G Partners, this thoughtful project encouraged visitors to learn about the lives of refugees and rescuers through various media. The exhibition has won numerous awards.
- Focusing on Histroic Exhibitions
After exploring a few successful exhibits and how they capture the audiance and communicate their theme and narrative, I thought it was now important to look at Historic Exhibitions as I want to explore the historic and famous structures of steel. So this is now more relevant to my project and helps me to understanding how to better create a new visual representation of history.
Back from the Dead: Demystifying Antibiotics
The exhibition includes work of bioartist Anna Dumitriu, who creates artwork through the direct sure of bacteria and has engaged internationally with issues of microbial resistance. The Museum's Director Dr Silke Ackermann comments that "Back from the Dead brings together past and future science with contemporary medical challenges in a novel way, revealing an extraordinary Oxford story and the human face of research in dramatic times".
Precious and Rare: Islamic Metalwork from The Courtauld
Discover how each precious and rare object is a 'cultural conversation', with its own unique story which always starts and ends in a different place. And those cultural conversations continue today, with objects and stories from the Multaka Oxford volunteers and the local community — including an interactive digital programme where you can design your own Islamic-inspired patterns.
Atmospheres
An exhibition by the Museum of the History of Science in collaboration with Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics and the School of Geography and the Environment at the University of Oxford.
Anvilled Stars
Matthew Galpin's meteor mirrors are hiding amongst objects in the Museum's Top Gallery. This temporary exhibition ran from 20 November 2010 to 6 February 2011.

Week 2
W/C 30.09.2024
During the second week I continued my artist research. After tutorials with Lauren and David I was referred to a few more artists that relate back to the themes that I had expressed a particular connection to. The themes I showed interest in initially being: Installations, Immersive environments, interactive design, creative tech in live music industries, set design, and immersive theatre.
Below is my initial mind map of interests that I included in my first pitch.
My tutorial feedback lead me to the artists:
James Turrell
Mariko Mori
Block 9
Derrick Jarmin
Olafu Elliason
James Turrell-
James Terrell "master of light" is an American artist that is known for working with light, and space movement. He investigates the 'materiality of light' and centres his practice on 'perceptual art'. His work was influenced predominantly by the notion of feeling in pictorial art.
Pictorial: "of or expressed in pictures"
Pictorial art: I interpret pictorial art as the visual communication of the artwork. Capturing depth and dimension within a piece that is communicated entirely visually.
He had an early interest in cosmological phenomena, which seemed to stem from his father's occupation in aeronautical engineering. His mother's christian beliefs also instilled this idea of everyone having their own 'inner light'. These concepts combined with his studies into perceptual psychology, I think, were quite clear inspirations for his work.
"Regarded as one of the founders of the mid-1960s California Light and Space Movement, Turrell invented signature forms that intensified the experience of sight and perception."
I feel as though his work and practice was quite futuristic in a sense. I think that the methods he used and his actual practice seems like quite modern ways of working and outcomes. His process seems to be fairly iterative, he worked initially, using gases to create flat flames that burned in even colours. These early works proved challenging to control, halting further experimentation in the medium. This being the turning point into high intensity projectors as lights sources.
I have always liked working with projections, and think he does this very effectively. He progressed into experimenting with scale, colour, architecture, shape and more. I like how his pieces are quite simple, sometimes as simple as recording the relationship between shape and colour. These ideas combined with the completely immersive nature of his work I think is the perfect way to highlight his method of pictorial story telling.
Mariko Mori -
Mariko Mori was another artists that was referred to me. With her works though I did like them I was more drawn to the sentiments and ideology of her practice. She explores universal questions at the 'intersection of life, death, reality, and technology'. I liked this idea of creating something that explores questions, perhaps something with quite a philosophical undertone such as themes like; life, death and reality.
Her work ranges from sculptures, to immersive installations. I looked closer at a specific piece of hers. it was a recent installation that she did called "Ring: One With Nature". It sees a 6 meter high ring installed at the top of a Brazilian waterfall. This piece was installed as a reminder of the unity between man and nature. It was unveiled just three days before the rio olympics in 2016, and was also built s an emblem of the unity of all the nations. These messages and ideals behind the pieces were again part of the reason I was drawn to her work. The interconnectivity between notions of, man and nature and, various nations I feel were nice sentiments to the design and I have always enjoyed the extra level of depth that these ideologies bring to the pieces.
Block 9 -
Block 9 were lead by the artists, Gideon Berger and Stephen Gallagher. The pair explore the space in which art, music, theatre and politics collide. They often work with the construction of complete immersive, alternative temporary realities. Their work 'incorporates a wide range of disciplines, from live music and performance programming, through video, set and lighting design to creative consultancy and art direction.'
They have worked closely with huge names such as; Glastonbury, Gorillaz, Skrillex, Lana Del Rey and Due Lipa. They have a firm footing in the design world within live music spaces, thus making them a perfect artist to research.
The artists Gorillaz, were also fun to look into as they have such a unique niche. They are a virtual band, that consist of 4 members. 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs. The actual band was formed by Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett. I found the concept of this band so interesting, and can see how Block 9 would work so effectively alongside them. They had collaborated with them on various occasions. I looked into their 'The Now Now' tour. It was an international festival and arena tour that saw Block 9 collaborating with them to make new creative content. They designed a 'visual identity for the show which journeys through back-catalogue classics, across the pixilated landscape of ‘Humanz’ and into the unchartered territories of brand new album, ‘The Now Now’.'. The whole design of the project saw this journey to their new album. I like how they designed following this narrative while ensuring it stayed relevant to the music. The result constructed a more immersive, psychedelic world of light and colour.
Methodology: Production design, Art Direction, Video Direction, Collaboration.
I like this sense of escapism from the artists. The whole atmosphere being a place in which people can completely transcend and export the audience into a new world. I feel that this was a most appropriate artist group to research as it really conforms to the interests that I had identified and listed in my original pitch. Looking into other pieces of theirs I identified various other pieces that I liked which further reassured that these artists are worth having researched. Especially being that have always had an interest in live music spaces, it was useful to see that there are professional design positions within the live music industry.

Poll: Most Americans say religion’s influence is waning, and half think that’s bad (Religion News Service) As the U.S. continues to debate the fusion of faith and politics, a sweeping new survey reports that most American adults have a positive view of religion’s role in public life but believe its influence is waning. The development appears to unsettle at least half of the country, with growing concern among an array of religious Americans that their beliefs are in conflict with mainstream American culture. That’s according to a new survey unveiled on Friday (March 14) by Pew Research. Greg Smith, associate director of research at Pew Research Center, pointed to findings such as 80% of U.S. adults saying religion’s role in American life is shrinking—as high as it’s ever been in Pew surveys—and 49% of U.S. adults say religion losing that influence is a bad thing. What’s more, he noted that 48% of U.S. adults say there’s “a great deal” of or “some” conflict between their religious beliefs and mainstream American culture, an increase from 42% in 2020. The number of Americans who see themselves as a minority group because of their religious beliefs has increased as well, rising from 24% in 2020 to 29% this year.
NIH probe of ‘Havana syndrome’ finds no sign of brain injuries (NYT) Repeated scans of patients suffering from the mysterious ailment commonly known as “Havana syndrome” found no significant evidence of brain injury, according to an ongoing investigation by the National Institutes of Health. Two studies, published Monday in JAMA, found few significant differences in a range of cognitive and physical tests among more than 80 patients who had been stationed in Cuba, Austria, China and other locations compared with a control group of people with similar job descriptions. The new findings are poised to reignite the controversy over this now-global medical mystery, which sparked a rash of inconclusive investigations, roiled the State Department and Central Intelligence Agency and heightened tensions between the United States and Cuba. The researchers emphasized that the patients who volunteered for the study, which began in 2018, do have severe symptoms that can be debilitating.
Gangs unleash new attacks on upscale areas in Haiti’s capital (AP) Gangs attacked two upscale neighborhoods in Haiti’s capital early Monday in a rampage that left at least a dozen people dead in surrounding areas. Gunmen looted homes in the communities of Laboule and Thomassin before sunrise, forcing residents to flee as some called radio stations pleading for police. The neighborhoods had remained largely peaceful despite a surge in violent gang attacks across Port-au-Prince that began on Feb. 29. An Associated Press photographer saw the bodies of at least 12 men strewn on the streets of Pétionville, located just below the mountainous communities of Laboule and Thomassin.
Police: Bolsonaro forged vaccine card before U.S. visit (Washington Post) Brazilian police have accused former president Jair Bolsonaro of fraud and criminal association, authorities said Tuesday morning, alleging that he colluded with others to fabricate his vaccination card shortly before entering the United States in late 2022. Days before Bolsonaro left the presidential palace in 2022 after losing to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in a historically divisive election, false information was entered into a health ministry ledger to issue fake vaccine cards for Bolsonaro and his daughter, police say. Days later, Bolsonaro decamped for the United States, which at the time granted entry to foreigners only if they were vaccinated. If convicted of the alleged crimes, Bolsonaro could face years in prison.
Without realising it, Britain has become a nation of immigrants (Economist) In 2013 Lifespring Church moved from the suburbs into a former cinema near the centre of Reading. At the time, its congregation was small and not varied. “We moved in as a white middle-class church,” says Neville Hollands, a senior pastor. These days Lifespring has members born in more than 40 countries. Immigration has transformed Lifespring Church, Reading and Britain itself. The 2021 census of England and Wales showed that 10m people, one-sixth of the population, were born outside the United Kingdom. That was a higher share than in America or any large European country except Germany. The proportion is almost certainly higher today. The fact is that, asylum excepted, Britain handles immigration very well. The country manages to attract people from a large and ever-growing range of countries. Although the popular image of a migrant is a desperate young man floating across the English Channel, Britain’s foreign-born residents are frequently middle-class and slightly more female than male. They quickly get up to speed economically, and their children do strikingly well in school.
Putin extends rule in preordained Russian election (AP) President Vladimir Putin extended his reign over Russia in a landslide election whose outcome was never in doubt, declaring his determination Monday to advance deeper into Ukraine and dangling new threats against the West. Putin has led Russia as president or prime minister since December 1999. At the end of his fifth term, he would be the longest-serving Russian leader since Catherine the Great, who ruled during the 18th century. Emboldened by his sweeping victory, Putin said he planned to carve out a buffer zone in Ukraine to protect Russia from cross-border shelling and attacks. Asked if an open clash could erupt between Russia and NATO, Putin responded curtly by saying: “Everything is possible in today’s world.” He added, “It’s clear to everyone that it will put us a step away from full-scale World War III.”
Afghanistan’s Long, Punishing Drought (NYT) They awake in the mornings to find another family has left. Half of one village, the entirety of the next have departed in the years since the water dried up—in search of jobs, of food, of any means of survival. Those who remain pick apart the abandoned homes and burn the bits for firewood. Several years of punishing drought has displaced entire swaths of Afghanistan, one of the nations most vulnerable to climate change, leaving millions of children malnourished and plunging already impoverished families into deeper desperation. And there is no relief in sight.
Sri Lankan Astrologers (Guardian) The government of Sri Lanka backs a group of 42 astrologers through their cultural affairs ministry, and a key job for them is to unanimously agree on the best date for new year rituals. Well, for the first time, the astrologers are split, and while a majority backed the dawn of the Sinhala and Tamil new year on the 13th of April, a number of dissenters argue that that day is wrong and will lead to disaster. Astrologers possess legit political power in the country; a former president once called a snap election based on the advice of an astrologer (he lost), and over a decade ago an astrologer was arrested after forecasting that the president would be ousted by his prime minister.
Many hospitals in China stop newborn delivery services as birth rate drops (Reuters) Many hospitals in China have stopped offering newborn delivery services this year, state-backed news outlet Daily Economic News reported, with industry experts warning of an “obstetric winter” due to declining demand amid a record drop in new births. Hospitals in various provinces including in eastern Zhejiang and southern Jiangxi have in the past two months announced that they will close their obstetric departments, according to notices viewed by Reuters. The closures come as Chinese policymakers grapple with how to boost young couples’ desire to have children as authorities face a growing demographic headache of a rapidly ageing society.
Killing in Handan (Foreign Policy) The killing of a 13-year-old boy in the small Chinese city of Handan has caused outrage and concern. Three other so-called left-behind children, or those who are left in the care of grandparents or other relatives when their parents move to the city for work, were arrested for the crime. The suspects are likely to be tried under legislation introduced last year that lowers the age of criminal responsibility to 12 years old (from 14) in some cases. The motive for the killing is unclear. Left-behind children are often seen as lacking parental discipline, and truancy is widespread. Although tuition is free up to age 16 in China, schools in rural provinces lag behind their urban counterparts, producing dropout rates as high as 40 percent in some areas—and leading to an educational crisis.
Hostage families cling to hope (BBC) An estimated 130 people taken hostage during the 7 October attacks remain in Gaza. Israel believes at least 30 of them are already dead. Their relatives—along with those captives who have already been released—are trapped in an anguishing wait. Every morning when Rachel Goldberg-Polin wakes, she writes a number on a piece of tape and sticks it to her clothing. It’s the number of days since her son Hersh was taken hostage—she says stolen—by Hamas. When we meet in Jerusalem that number is 155. On the morning of 7 October, she turned on her phone to find two messages from Hersh. The first said: “I love you.” The second sent immediately afterwards read: “I’m sorry.” She called—no answer. “It rang and rang,” she says. “I wrote ‘Are you okay? Let me know you are okay.’ None of those (messages) were ever seen.” The last image of the 23-year-old is in a Hamas video. He is being loaded on to a pickup truck, surrounded by gunmen. His left arm has been blown off. Rachel says she is always worried, scared, and doubtful. But hope, she says, “is mandatory”. “I believe it and I have to believe it, that he will come back to us.”
Israel’s war on Hamas brings famine to Gaza (Washington Post) The warnings were being sounded for weeks. The United Nations, international relief organizations and some foreign governments voiced their fears over the ongoing humanitarian calamity in the Gaza Strip. Those warnings reached a crescendo Monday with the release of new report that found that 1.1 million people in Gaza—roughly half the beleaguered territory’s population—are expected to face catastrophic levels of hunger and starvation between now and July. What makes this calamity all the more stunning is that it’s entirely the product of human decisions: Gaza’s civilian population is starving because of an Israeli siege, not an earthquake, extended drought or other natural disasters that have blighted parts of the world subject to famine. “This is the highest number of people facing catastrophic hunger ever recorded by the Integrated Food Security Classification system—anywhere, anytime,” U.N. Secretary General António Guterres said in a news briefing Monday. Martin Griffiths, the U.N.’s top humanitarian official, said more than 1 million people are at risk because they have been cut off from aid, markets have been collapsed and fields destroyed. “The international community should hang its head in shame for failing to stop this.”
At least 100 villagers are kidnapped in the latest mass abduction in northern Nigeria (AP) Armed gangs attacked two villages in Nigeria’s northwest over the weekend and seized at least 100 people from their homes, residents and a state official told The Associated Press on Monday, in the latest mass abduction in the region. The gunmen attacked communities in Kaduna state’s Kajuru council area on Saturday and Sunday, said Usman Dallami Stingo, who represents Kajuru in the state legislature. Kaduna state is where nearly 300 schoolchildren were abducted less than two weeks ago. The latest kidnappings, like the previous one, have been blamed on bandit groups known for mass killings and kidnappings in Nigeria’s northwestern and central regions.

Theology for the people
The book Theology for the people which explains Theology; Evangelist; Christion missions; Brazil; Devine calling; God's purpose; Pastors was written by John Barry Dyer. This book is about my experience as a theological educator in Brazil and how this was used to transform churches in that country through the equipping of ordinary church members. BUY ON AMAZON ORDER YOUR E BOOK Brazilian evangelical churches often depend on their pastors to do everything and in turn their pastors exercise a kind of managerial role over the flock. In Brazil, it is often only the pastor who can baptise or preside at the Lord's Supper. This becomes complicated when churches find themselves without a pastor for long periods at a time. Even in the general running of the church its members are sometimes restricted to the role of onlookers with a sense of admiration and frustration as the pastor takes charge. In this book, I look at the theology behind this and, also, share examples of how this tendency to focus on the pastor as the centre of gravity within the local church was challenged through the creation of courses of theological education by extension, resulting in the equipping of ordinary Christians for their God-given vocation on the frontline of Christian mission. This explains Theology; Evangelist; Christion missions; Brazil; Devine calling; God's purpose; Pastors. About Author : John Barry Dyer I have written several books, two of which have already been published by Kingdom Publishers. I am a retired Baptist Minister having served with the Baptist Missionary Society in Brazil for 33 years in the areas of church development and theological education. Get Painless/Smooth Brazilian Waxing in Melbourne from a Reputable Beauty Salon
Women can have Brazilian waxing in Melbourne at reputable beauty centres for an affordable price, including regular, irregular, and touch-up procedures. These salons also offer waxing for various body parts, including the chin, lip, underarm, and conventional bikini. In a Brazilian wax, pubic hair is groomed and removed from the anus, between the upper thighs, around the external genitals, and in front of the pubic bone. You can opt to completely shave the area or just leave a thin frontal hairline, depending on your preferences. Your hair will stick to hard wax, not your skin. This is the more preferred alternative for Brazilian waxes because it is supposed to lessen the discomfort.
These beauty parlours offer variety of effective eyelash extensions in Melbourne such as subtle, bold and dramatic. These salons advise that you can select from classic, hybrid, 3D volume, and even 5D to get the style you want. If you are having trouble deciding, their team can analyse your face and suggest a choice that will best highlight your characteristics. Making eyelashes appear made up without mascara is possible with eyelash extensions, which are a semi-permanent option. These beauty shops guarantee that eyelash extensions will last for six to eight weeks before they fall out on their own, just like your regular lashes do. However, as they start to fall out, you can return and have your lash stylist fill in the gaps. In theory, you could extend your extensions indefinitely.
Importance of Getting Brazilian Waxing in Melbourne:
According to numerous studies, Brazilian waxing I, if you are prepared, waxing might be less irritating than shaving, which can result in lumps and rashes. Brazilian waxing removes hair from the source, keeping you smoother longer than shaving could. Although the hair eventually grows back, a Brazilian wax can prevent hair growth for three to four weeks. Waxing is less likely than using an epilator or shaving to result in an unwelcome rash, lumps, or other irritants when Brazilian waxing is done correctly. The hair frequently begins to come back softer and thinner if you wax frequently. Waxing will become less difficult and uncomfortable with practise.
In summary, beauty salons offer various beauty treatments such as eyelash extension, waxing, manicure & Pedicure and more. Anyone looking for these treatments should visit a nearby beauty salon.

[ad_1] Newswise — This is the main conclusion of a new study carried out by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), a centre supported by the "la Caixa" Foundation, and published in The Lancet Regional Health. The research team evaluated a cohort of 28.3 million people, representative of the low-income Brazilian population, based on data collected between 2007 and 2015. This is the largest evaluation of social determinants of health and AIDS in Brazil to date. The researchers concluded that social determinants related to povertyand social vulnerability are strongly associated with a higher burden of AIDS. Specifically, individuals who are black, economically disadvantaged, and lack access to education, are disproportionately affected by the burden of the disease."The results of the study show that social determinants of health play an important role in the burden of HIV/AIDS in a highly unequal country like Brazil. The whole chain of events related to the disease, whether it is the risk of becoming infected, developing advanced disease or dying from it, is influenced by these factors," says Davide Rasella, ISGlobal researcher and lead author of the study.Despite Brazil's pioneering response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, being the first middle-income country to offer free antiretroviral treatment to all people living with the disease and widespread free HIV testing, the mortality rate from the disease in Brazil in 2020 was 6 per 100,000 inhabitants. Of the new infections registered in Latin America in 2020, almost half (48%) were recorded in Brazil. The lower the wealth, the higher the AIDS incidence and mortalityAccording to the results of the study, lower wealth was strongly associated with higher AIDS incidence and mortality. Specifically, people with lower wealth were 55% more likely to become infected and 99% more likely to die. "Lower wealth may be closely related to social exclusion and food insecurity, which are potential barriers to early diagnosis and to starting or adhering to HIV/AIDS treatment," says Rasella.Lower levels of education were also associated with higher AIDS incidence and mortality. Illiterate people were 46% more likely to become ill and 176% more likely to die than those with higher education. This can be explained by factors such as lack of access to health information, risky sexual behaviour and difficulty in accessing health care. Previous studies have shown that people with lower levels of education are more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviour, to be diagnosed with HIV/AIDS late, and to have poorer access to and adherence to treatment. In addition, black people had a 53% higher risk of AIDS and a 69% higher risk of death than those who identified as white or Asian. This increased risk could be a consequence of structural racism, including racial health inequalities in access to and quality of health services. "Structural racism in Brazil, as in many other parts of the world, also manifests itself in poorer living conditions, which expose people to worse HIV/AIDS outcomes," notes Rasella. The effects of cash transfer programmesOf the total participants in the evaluated cohort, 64.75% were beneficiaries of the Bolsa Família cash transfer programme. Individuals who received the Bolsa Família cash transfer for less than two years had a higher risk of developing HIV/AIDS than those who did not meet the eligibility criteria for the programme. A protective effect was also observed for long-term receipt, with those who received the benefit between 5 and 10 years or for more than 10 years having a lower risk of becoming ill and dying from the disease."This may be due to the poverty-reducing effect of the programme's subsidies and the requirements for receiving these benefits, such as visiting health services and attending school for children and adolescents. This brings families closer to the services that provide diagnosis and health education," argues Rasella.Implications for prevention programmesThe results of the study highlight the need to invest in public health policies to expand access and ensure equity in health care, prioritising people with greater social vulnerability. "Our study has important implications for HIV/AIDS prevention and control programmes in other low- and middle-income countries. The results provide further evidence of the need to reduce social inequalities by focusing on key health determinants that affect HIV/AIDS," says the ISGlobal researcher."Without the implementation of meaningful interventions to reduce inequalities, there is a risk that the current increase in poverty rates and social vulnerability will reverse the progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS in recent decades and hinder the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals related to this disease," concludes Rasella.ReferenceLua I, F. Shraddha Shree Gems Gemstone Dealer and Retailer
What is Gemstone?
A gemstone is a mineral, rock, or petrified substance that has been cut and polished for use in jewellery or other decorative items. It is also referred to as a precious stone or semi-precious stone. Gemstones are prized for their aesthetic appeal, rarity, durability, metaphysical qualities, and historical significance.
Diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, amethysts, topazes, and pearls are a few examples of gemstones. The value and applications of many gemstones are influenced by their distinctive characteristics, which include colour, transparency, hardness, and refractive index.
For thousands of years, people from many different cultures have used gemstones for their aesthetic value and symbolic meaning as well as their medicinal and spiritual powers. In industrial uses like cutting tools and electrical components, they are also employed.
Which City Is Famous for Gemstone?
Around the world, there are a number of places and cities that are renowned for producing diamonds. Several instances include:
India's Jaipur - The "Pink City" of Jaipur is well-known for producing coloured gemstones like rubies, emeralds, sapphires, and topaz.
Thailand's Bangkok Bangkok, which is well-known for producing fine rubies and sapphires, is a significant centre for the world's gemstone trade.
Brazil's Rio de Janeiro - Rio de Janeiro is a key hub for the production and trade of precious and semi-precious stones, and Brazil is one of the world's top manufacturers of gemstones.
Mogok, Myanmar - Mogok is a town in Myanmar well-known for producing high-quality rubies as well as other precious stones like sapphires, spinels, and peridots.
Idar- Oberstein, Germany - Located in southwestern Germany, Idar-Oberstein is renowned for producing high-quality agate, amethyst, and other gemstones. The city has a long tradition of gemstone cutting and polishing.
These are but a few instances; there are numerous additional places in the world that are renowned for producing gemstones.
Which Country Has the Most Gemstone Mines?
The leading producers of gemstones vary based on the precise sorts of gemstones being studied, however many nations have sizable gemstone mines. The following are some of the top nations that produce gemstones:
China is the world's top producer of coloured gemstones, including jade, sapphire, and lesser-known stones like peridot, kunzite, and rhodonite. Other coloured gemstones produced in China include ruby, sapphire, and sapphire.
Brazilian emerald, aquamarine, topaz, tourmaline, and amethyst are among the many gemstones that are produced in large quantities in this country.
India is a significant source of both diamonds and coloured gemstones including rubies, sapphires, and emeralds.
Russia is a significant source of both diamonds and lesser-known gems like alexandrite and demantoid garnet.
Australia is a significant source of opal as well as less well-known gems like sapphire and chrysoprase.
Thailand, Tanzania, Madagascar, Colombia, and the United States are more nations with considerable gemstone output.

Ayahuasca – A Wonderful Plant That Remedies Several Mental Health Disorders
Ayahuasca is a psychedelic brew with many different traditional names and synonyms, found mostly in Latin America. It is made by brewing the ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) with any number of other plants rich in psychoactive alkaloids, such as chacruna (Psychotria viridis), which contains DMT and other ingredients that contribute to the complex chemistry of ayahuasca.
Ayahuasca was brought to the mainstream in the West in the 1990s when it became popular among Westerners who participated in jungle-based retreats, particularly in Peru. In recent years, ayahuasca has attracted widespread attention as a prescription medicine used as a treatment for a wide range of conditions—especially depression and anxiety. Some research suggests that ayahuasca might help with addictions and other mental health disorders.
The brew has a long history of religious use in ceremonies among indigenous Amazonian peoples, and is used by some indigenous and mestizo shamanic neoshamanic groups of south and central America where it is also employed for divination and healing purposes, as well as in initiation rites.
Ayahuasca was first described academically outside of Brazil in 1896 by the French botanist Louis Étienne Chaux. One of the most important early studies of the plant was conducted in 1958 by the Swiss-Brazilian psychiatrist Carlos Castaneda and his main collaborator, physician Don José Joaquín Amaringo. Their study was published in 1965 as The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge.
In recent years, ayahuasca has become popular not only among drug users and adherents but also among those interested in alternative healing. Some medical professionals have begun to prescribe the brew as a treatment for a variety of conditions, including depression and anxiety.
Unfortunately, some unscrupulous individuals have begun to exploit the use of ayahuasca as a way of gaining credibility and legitimacy in their field of work. Ayhuasca is also sometimes employed as a tool for "astral travel" purposes.
The ayahuasca vine, fundamentally endemic to South America, is today also farmed in Australia in a legal way. So if you are looking to buy Ayahuasca plant Australia for any purpose, then thankfully there are some good and reliable sources in Australia to help you meet the need. For example, you would like to consider settling on El Sol Retreats, a leading Ayahuasca Retreat Centre, which is at the vanguard of supplying Ayahuasca Plant in Australia at very attractive prices. So what is the wait for? Simply visit the website www.elsolretreats.com to buy Ayahuasca plant Australia.

⚠️ WHAT IS HAPPENING IN BRAZIL: a thread ⚠️
am i going insane or more of the world should care about a country generating covid variants that could spread internationally? right
spoiler alert: covid is killing us. badly. no, it's not this bad everywhere. yes, you should care.
our government is DELIBERATELY and CLEARLY trying to kill us, not only not doing anything but actually trying to stop any help from getting here, with censorship to go with it.
PLEASE, READ RHIS THREAD
it's NOT this bad everywhere:
"No other nation that experienced such a major outbreak is still grappling with record-setting death tolls and a health care system on the brink of collapse."
yes, you SHOULD care:
"Preliminary studies suggest that the variant that swept through the city of Manaus is not only more contagious, but it also appears able to infect some people who have already recovered from other versions of the virus."
you REALLY should care:
"And the variant has slipped Brazil’s borders, showing up in two dozen other countries and in small numbers in the United States."
1 in every 4 covid deaths WORLDWIDE is happening in brazil, INTERNATIONAL MEDIA ISN'T TALKING ABOUT THIS ENOUGH.
our president?
- calling it "a little flu"
- literally making trying to legally stop states from lockdown
- blocked any attempts to get vaccines here for months
- recommended meds with no scientific proof which caused SEVERAL other deaths for overuse of improper meds
he refuses to wear a mask in public but it's not just the things he isn't doing, it's the deliberate steps he takes to make sure ANYONE who tries to do ANYTHING to help (even the US!!!!!!!! OFFERING US VACCINES FOR MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!!!) is shut down.
we have no oxygen. no ICU beds. no proper masks. basic food is so expensive here the country is falling back to hunger, so whoever is not dying from covid is dying out of starvation or due to the complete and utter collapse of our healthcare system.
if you read the articles i post here you will know brazil has a RECORD of being GREAT in this type of scenario & getting vaccines to everyone fast as fuck.
this is a DELIBERATE ATTEMPT TO KILL US, i couldn't possibly stress that enough.
who is it killing? take a guess.
"The study also found that Black Brazilians were likelier to lose their jobs or face pay cuts than white people during the pandemic. The death rate in poorer cities has been substantially higher than in rich ones."
BY JANUARY OF THIS YEAR the ny times was reporting "The country has not yet approved any of the vaccines on the market."
NOT EVEN APPROVED. ANY. OF THE VACCINES.
this isn't a tragedy, this is our government's plan.
again, why are people not helping? i have no clue.
"On Friday, officials at the World Health Organization called the surge of cases in Brazil deeply troubling and warned that it could wreak havoc well beyond the country’s borders."
censorship? oh yeah, the president's son is trying to silence a guy who made a TWEET calling the president out. & that was only news not a shady unexplainable death bc the guy is famous and rich in the first place.
this is not the only threat he has made, btw. during his CAMPAIGN he said he'd kill people who opposed his government. that is how low we are.
10,3MI brazilians might starve to death and things are only getting worse:
have i proven my point? cuz honestly there is no lack of evidence, but i can go graphic if you need to hear what happens when a patient needs oxygen or an ambulance and our hospitals can't provide it.
no? yeah. better not.
"ok but what can we do"
TALK. ABOUT. THIS.
WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT THIS.
WHY IS THIS NOT EVERYWHERE.
WHY IS NOBODY HELPING.
i literally feel crazy, as if this is only happening in my head. every brazilian i know is desperate and nobody cares.
"ok but what else"
we need donations, badly. money for food, masks, literally all supplies. if you are a single person guess what THERE ARE NO ORGANISED WAY TO HELP YET you literally need to find a brazilian or learn portuguese to be able to get to local donations centres.
have i mentioned nobody cares? how is a country going through this massive of a crisis with a government trying to kill and silence us yet there people barely heard about this???? given IT IS CREATING DEADLY VARIANTS THAT ARE SPREADING BEYOND BORDERS
oh my god i feel insane
special call-out for portugal & also the US for fucking us up historically
https://t.co/JQ9LBkfSIV
per request i will make an english speaking video about brazil's covid situation to be posted @ youtube.com/c/AndressaBuss later this week

Update: finally managed to get an extensive list of options for donations after over 24hrs trying, from jun last year so some campaigns have ended but there's still plenty to choose from
(again: im available for free translations & help in your donation process if you need it)
just assisted in a R$740 donation process to the above donation centre & i am working on putting together a list of various options for donations as well as brazilian artists who are making emergency commissions :)
im mostly trying to assist people place the donations themselves & when i have to place the donation i offer vast proof (of whatever kind you need) of each transaction
im not a random account with no face behind it, im a broke history teacher who has covid, im trying to help

Thursday 21/10/21 - Dinosaurs of the World Part 6; South America
An Alverazsaurid cleaning the teeth of a Giganotosaurus, Sergey Krasovskiy
As I discussed in the opening paragraphs of previous entries of this series, the earliest dinosaur expeditions were done mostly by European or North American palaeontologists, even when in other countries. In the early 1910s, American expeditions into Mongolia brought back Velociraptor, and in the 1970s, they found the famous Fighting Dinosaurs fossil where a Velociraptor and a Protoceratops are still entwined in combat in death. In the early 1910s-1920s, German expeditions were conducted throughout various parts of Africa, bringing to light the exciting specimens of Spinosaurus, Giraffatitan and Heterodontosaurus.
But there was an issue with these expeditions, almost none of the fossils stayed in their country of discovery. Those African discoveries went to Germany, and the Fighting Dinosaurs are still displayed prominently at the American Natural History Museum. I discussed in the India/Madagascar post that Barapasaurus was the first dinosaur to have a skeletal mount in India, in 1977. What I didn't mention is that to this day, Barapasaurus is still one of the only skeletal mounts of a dinosaur in India, most are in museums outside the country.
I bring this all up because although modern discoveries are more likely to be studied and displayed in their home country, fossil smuggling and stealing is still a huge issue in today's palaeontological community. Nowhere is this more of an issue than in South America, where many dinosaur fossils make their way to European or American museums through black market trades, or by illegal exportation. South America has had some of the most interesting and extreme dinosaur discoveries, but despite strict laws in Brazil for example, where Brazilian fossils must be studied strictly in Brazil, fossils are still being stolen from native land, and displayed overseas.
I don't wanna get too preachy, but some of the dinosaurs I'm discussing today have been at the centre of some controversial and disrespectful practices, and I thought it important to give context before I get into it all. But without further ado, lets discuss some South American Dinosaurs!
Ubirajara jubatus
Ubirajara, TheDinosaurMann (twitter/furaffinity)
Ubirajara was a Compsagnathid theropod from Early Cretaceaous Brazil. Its fossil was discovered in a chalk mine in North Eastern Brazil in 1995 but was illegally exported to Germany, where its fossils were studied, described, and remain to this day. The Brazilian Palaeontological Community have campaigned for the return of the remains to Brazil, but there has been no luck so far.
Its genus name, Ubirajara (you-bee-rah-jar-ah), comes a South American native language called Tupi, and translates into "Lord of the Spear", referring to the large keratinous spines erupting from the base of its neck. Given their structure, these spines were most definitely meant for display. A variety of simple spines of various sizes run down the neck and back of Ubirajara, leading experts to think it had very advanced sexual display features, comparing the dinosaur to the modern Peacock. In life, Ubirajara was about 40cm tall at the shoulder, and 1 m long from nose to tail tip.
Patagonykus puertai
Patagonykus, Emily Stepp
Patagonykus was an Alvarezsaurid theropod from Early Cretaceous Argentina. Patagonykus translates in Greek to "Patagonian Claw", and that "claw" singular is very fitting for such a dinosaur. Alvarezsaurs like Patagonykus were a highly derived group of theropods that were seemingly adapted for an insectivorous lifestyle. Their narrow snouts were suited for pushing into tree hollows or insect nests, and some scientists think they may have had long tongues. Although not confirmed in all Alvarezsaurs, many, like the Mongolian Shuvuuia or Patagonykus itself, have evidence of a hand with a single claw. This one fingered hand was not vestigial however, and palaeontologists think that Patagonykus used this claw to dig into the ground or tree bark to uncover insects to eat. Patagonykus was one of the larger Alverezsaurids, at least 1 m long.
Amargasaurus cazaui
Amargasaurus, @alphynix (tumblr)
Amargasaurus was a Dicraeosaurid sauropod from Early Cretaceous Argentina. I described the family's namesake, Dicraeosaurus, in the episode on Africa. Like all Dicraeosaurids, it had a shorter neck for a sauropod, as well a smaller body size in general, it was 2.7 m tall at the shoulder and around 10 m long; a large animal, but small for a sauropod. Amargasaurus was named for La Amarga, a town nearby its site of discovery, and although it has no bearing on the animal itself, Amarga is Spanish for "bitter". The most unique aspect of this dinosaur's anatomy is the dual row of spines rising from the base of the neck, all the way up the Amargasaurus's head. Some paleoartists portray these spikes as supporting a skin sail, but many suspect they were bare in life, and may have served as defense against ancient Argentina's large predators.
Carnotaurus sastrei
Carnotaurus, Roberto Akeiron
Carnotaurus was a large Abelisaur theropod from Late Cretaceous Argentina. Due to the completeness of its fossils, it is one of most well-studied dinosaurs of the southern hemisphere. Its name means "meat eating bull", referring to its pair of large brow horns. I have previously written about the absurd anatomy of this dinosaur: Mouth on Legs; Carnotaurus, so I'll just briefly discuss the main points here.
Carnotaurus was a very agile and slim theropod. Its muscular legs and tail made it well adapted for sprinting, quickly chasing its prey. Its skull was short and strangely elastic, leading palaeontologists to believe it may have been able to flex its jaw like modern pythons, to swallow larger portions of food. Given its almost certainly vestigial arms, which did not even have a proper elbow, it would've hunted almost exclusively with its mouth. Modern interpretations think it would've hunted large sauropods, bring them down with multiple savage bites to the neck. Its horns were unlikely to be used in hunting, so its thought they were used in intraspecific sexual display or head butting contests. It was a really weird animal, so please read my other article if you're interested.
Eoraptor lunensis
Eoraptor, tnilab-ekneb121 (deviantart)
Eoraptor was an Early Saurischian dinosaur from Late Triassic Argentina. Its genus name means "Dawn Plunderer", referring to its grasping hands, and that it was one of the earliest true dinosaurs we have found so far. Its species name, lunensis, refers to Valle de la Luna, where it was found. Eoraptor was one of the first dinosaurs, and when it was alive, the Earth was ruled by stem-mammals, crocodile relatives and large amphibians. Given how primitive its skeletal traits are, it is uncertain whether Eoraptor was a basal Sauropod, Theropod, or maybe even before the two groups split. Its skull and claws were unspecialised for any sort of advanced predatory behaviour, but palaeontologists conclude it likely ate small lizards, fish, and insects. It would have been around 30 cm tall and 1 m long.
Austroraptor cabazai
Austroraptor, AdrianArt (Artstation)
Austroraptor was a large Dromeosaur theropod from Late Cretaceous Argentina. It was a strangely shaped dinosaur and one of the largest species of raptor dinosaur ever, about 1.5 tall at the shoulder and 6 m long from nose to tail tip. Austroraptor means "Southern Thief", as most dromeosaurs had been found in the northern hemisphere. The specific subgroup Austroraptor was from, the Unenglaniiae, had longer legs than most dromeosaurs, implicating a capacity for long distance pursuit rather sprinting like in Velociraptor. Austroraptor also a longer snout, possibly hinting at a fish-eating diet.
Oxalaia quilimbensis
Oxalaia, Alexander Vieira
Oxalaia was a large Spinosaurid Theropod from Late Cretaceous Brazil. This dinosaur was first described in 2011, around the same time the new specimens of Spinosaurus were discovered, and new studies have brought up the possibilty of Oxalaia being a subspecies of Spinosaurus, so it may become Spinosaurus quilimbensis. It is known from partial skull remains, teeth, and spinal vertebrae, but since the remains found so far mostly closely resemble Spinosaurus, that is what most reconstructions depict it as looking. Given the material available, it would've been slightly smaller than Spinosaurus aegyptiacus, about 12-14 m long, and 5-6 m tall. Oxalaia is named for the African deity Oxalá, introduced to South America during European slavery period, perhaps mirroring how Oxalaia is a South American Spinosaur known from a mostly African group.
Dreadnoughtus schrani
Dreadnoughtus, Mark Witton
Dreadnoughtus was a large Titanosaur Sauropod from Late Cretaceous Argentina. It has one of the most complete skeletons for a Titanosaur, and partially as a consequence of this, we can fairly confidently conclude that Dreadnoughtus was the largest dinosaur ever (at least so far discovered). Titanosaurs in South America reached monstrous sizes, likely as a defensive measure against predators. Dreadnoughtus was 6 m tall at the shoulder, and 26 m long, estimated to have weighed 60 tonnes, making it likely the largest land creature to have ever walked the earth. It's genus name, Dreadnoughtus, means "fears nothing", because the palaeontologist who described Dreadnoughtus thought it deserved credit for being such an impressively tough dinosaur.
Giganotosaurus carolinii
Giganotosaurus, Cheung Chung Tat
Not to be confused with Gigantosaurus, a Jurassic English Sauropod, Giganotosaurus, was a Late Cretaceous Carcharodontosaur Theropod from Argentina. It's name means "Great Southern Lizard", and depending on size estimates, Giganotosaurus may have been the greatest theropod there was. It was estimated to be almost 4 m tall at the hip and 12-14 m long, as larger or maybe large than Tyrannosaurus. Giganotosaurus and other Carcharodontosaurs were generalist predators, eating anything they could fit in their mouth, although they probably could've taken down titanosaurs if they worked as a group.
Thanks for Reading
Even moreso than my Asian Dinosaurs post, this list was overpopulated by theropods, but in my defence, South America was the most dangerous place on Earth in the Cretaceous Period. There were many South American dinosaurs I didn't get to list, which is a shame because palaeontologists in the region have a lot of fun naming dinosaurs. My personal favourites by name are Irritator, Ninjatitan, and Thanos.
Next time I'm gonna finally cover North America. Luckily for me, the difficulty of narrowing down a list of iconic Dinosaurs from the most iconic Palaeontological region is made easier by the fact that North America was split into two land masses during the Age of Reptiles, so I will be covering North America in two parts.
<< Part 5: Europe || Part 7: North America (Appalachia)

Deceiving Love
This was a request idea send so all credits for the idea goes to @me-goro Thank you for the request and I promise I’ll try my best :)
Request: Enemy to Lovers where Lou meets y/n for the first time while Lou’s trying to be sneaky because she wants to get information o but Y/N is unknowingly in the way of her getting it.
This is probably not going to be that many chapters maybe a few chapters, more or less fast pace. I tried to get it in a one shot but it would’ve been too long.
I’m so sorry is so long I couldn’t find a stopping point and wanted to get as much info out there as well as introduction for the first chapter. I promise I’ll try not to make them too long in the future lol. I’m bad at finding good ending spots as well as writing characters hating on each other LOL. Fair warning I went for the crashing into each other cliché to create a bad start between them LOL
I haven’t edited it completely so there might be grammatic error and for that I apologize.
Also this is my first Ocean’s 8 Lou Miller story so I’m sorry if this turns out bad 😅
Warnings: None yet except Cursing here and there. bad first impressions if you count that (is that under angst????)
Chapter One
~Lou~
Lou parked in front of the warehouse they had rented out for the job. They made sure to rent it out under a false name to avoid backtracking in case somewhere where to go wrong. They all took a flight to France for a job Debbie insisted they should do. She claimed it a really good job and the pay was good. Personally Lou didn’t needed the extra cash and rejected the job a few times over the course of a week before finally caving in due to Debbie’s persistence. Despite her agreeing she wasn’t happy and had been slightly grouchy she wanted to focus on running her club, upgrading it here and there to make it better and maybe open another club so she was very busy.
If she did this job she had to put all the plans on hold for a while which she was upset about. She had to hire a temporary manager to run her club while she was gone, hell even Tammy tried to tell Debbie to leave Lou be but according to Debbie they’ll get caught if Lou wasn’t there. Lou had been in a bad mood that day and saying a few things that would have hurt Debbie’s feelings if Debbie had been within hearing range only Tammy heard her and the two had a lengthy conversation which made Lou wish she had a strong drink which wasn’t wise thankfully Tammy made her feel better already sensing Lou’s sudden stress. Safe to say after talking to Tammy she agreed on the job better her helping Debbie than having all seven of her friends get caught and arrested. Debbie was more than happy at Lou agreeing to do this job something Lou noticed and had to admit made her happy.
They all walked in the warehouse and looked around except for Lou who walked confidently to a chair and sat down her long legs spread out in front of her. She had already came here a week ago to get the place set up for the team she even set up a spot for nine balls with the equipment the woman needed for the heist so she didn’t needed to explore or look around. Debbie grinned at Lou proud that Lou had set the place up already Lou looked up from her phone giving Debbie a smug smirk before she finished texting her temporary club manager. She put her phone away and looked up knowing the team had gathered and Debbie took the floor.
“So, what are we stealing? You guys haven’t told us.” Amita wondered
Lou lounged back shrugging, “Don’t look at me not even I know.”
“Yo, are they diamonds?” Nine Balls wondered
“Woah, wait you haven’t told Lou?” Constance wondered shocked
“I didn’t wanted her to try and back out if I told her.” Debbie informed them earning a snort from the blonde in question who shoved a piece of gum in her mouth
“Oh now we really wanna know, spill girl what is it?” Nine stated closing the lid of her laptop
Smiling satisfied that she got everyone's attention she turned on the screen projector stating, “Hear me out first.”
The screened turned on and an drawing of three jewels popped up and beside it another image of two crowns popped up. Lou studied the items quickly wondering what was so special about them besides the lack of photograph.
The necklace collar is large and is made out of pure gold hallmarked with roses and harps made out of diamonds put to gatherer alternately. They where tied together with knots made out of pure gold and topaz diamonds. The roses where made out of diamonds and rubies. In the center of the collar was an imperial Jeweled Crown crest surmounting a harp of gold and diamonds. There was a small writing that says they're suppose to be two of them one had the imperial badge crown and the other did not other than that both necklace collars where the exact same.
The second jewel was a Grand Master diamond badge. The badge looked like it was similar to the one hanging off one of the necklaces. the badge is made out of silver containing trefoil in emerald on a ruby cross surrounded by sky blue enamel with rose diamonds writing. The crowned harp was made out of Diamonds and Brazilian stones.
The third Jewel was a simple large star made of gold diamonds and brilliants. it consisting of eight points with four lesser issuing Centre enclosing a cross of ruby and a trefoil of emeralds surrounding a sky blue enamel circle with writing in rose diamonds. The crowns was made out of pure gold, diamonds among with other jewels spread out creating a rather elegant and luxurious pattern.
Lou looked at them than at Debbie and sighed shaking her head looking incredulous. The jewels in the first image where known as the crowned jewels and the crowns where royal crowns from who knows how long ago both of which were stolen at different times ages ago. Lou was very confused as to what Debbie was planning unless Debbie decided to change her profession to treasure hunter.
“Debbie what are those jewels?” Tammy wondered confused
“Yo, what’s with the lack of photo are we downgrading or something?” Nine pointed out
“No we are not downgrading these-,” Debbie began before she was interrupted by Lou
“Those are the Crown jewels that went missing in 1906. The crowns on he right where missing in 1799 both where never seen again.” Lou explained
Debbie nodded slightly surprised Lou knows about them, “Yes, you know what they are?”
“Duh! So Indiana Jones how the fuck are we looking for said jewels are we pulling a Lara Croft or something.” Lou stated sarcastically
“If you would have let me finish Lou instead of interrupting I would have said that there was rumors that the said jewels are no longer missing they supposedly are here in this city in their most popular museum. Unfortunately we need information in order to get it that one one has but probably one person without said information there’s no way we can find them.” Debbie explained
Rose became confused and spoke up shyly, “What are they worth, don’t we usually start off by saying how much the seven of us earn?”
Debbie grinned mischievously and looked at the group proudly, “Today, four-hundred million dollars in today’s money minimum we might easily be able to up the prices due to the simple fact that the they where all stolen long ago and thought to no longer exist.”
“You’re not telling us something.” Lou pointed out casually
Debbie pressed the button on the remote and three pictures popped up, two of them where of two men one older than the other and the third of a woman Lou had to admit was the most beautiful woman she had ever laid eye’s on. She honestly could care less about the pictures of the men she was focused on the woman. Lou noticed you smiled proudly, you eyes shinning with happiness. You where wearing an outfit that was business casual, your hair styled to suit your professional style you where going for. Lou’s eyes flickered to Debbie to find her staring at her smirking smug and Lou cursed softly at being caught she knew that look anywhere. Debbie smug looked at the group and stated casually.
“These three are the ones in charge the younger man is the owner and director his name is Richard Davis, the older man’s name is Liam Moore he is the Curator, and the woman’s name is Y/F/N Y/LN she is the registrar. One or two of them have all the information we need and we need to get it out of them to find it. It’ll be too risky getting it out of Richard Davis and even Liam Moore. Our biggest chances is Y/F/N, she is in charge of what goes in and out of that place. Her job is to literally keep track of all the object, records, authenticity and borrowings so if these jewels are heading to their museum they’ll be passing through her and it'll be her job along with Liam to put them away either on display and hide them.” Debbie explained
“Don’t forget that if she has good relation with the director he’ll be giving her special tasks involving Jewels.” Tammy added earning a nod from Debbie
“So, how do we get this information out of her?” Amita wondered
Debbie grinned eying Lou again earning a sharp glare from Lou which in turn caused Debbie to laugh and look at the confused group who was looking back and forth between them wondering what they missed.
“Well Lou will be getting close to the woman and try to get information out of her she has Lou’s type written all over.” Debbie told them smug
“Like she’ll tell me the information. ‘Hey Miss. Y/L/N where the fuck are you keeping the jewels my team wants to steal them’.” Lou hissed her tone dripping sarcasm
“Please, we need the information.” Constance pleaded pouting Lou narrowed her eyes only causing Constance to pout further finally earning a sigh in defeat from Lou who all but caved she can’t resist Constance pout and she knows it she has a soft spot for the girl.
“Alright, I’ll do it. That was a cheap shot kid,” Lou pointed out getting up earning a beaming smile in return. “How hard can getting information out of her be aren’t people working in museum are boring or uptight as fuck.”
Lou without a word left the building deciding to pay the place a visit she kind of hoped one of the other’s would go in and do that after all Lou’s job was to gather anyone working for them, stealing the objects, making sure everything is going according to plan and have backup plans in case something goes wrong among other things bribing information out of someone wasn’t one of them. Granted a very attractive someone but she wasn’t going to admit that to anyone. Lou sighed realizing is been too long since she’s gotten anyone in her bed and it was starting to show. Lou climbed on a car and drove off following the GPS directions.
~You~
You rushed into the building of your workplace cursing at yourself for forgetting to set up the alarm. You moved to France from your home after finally landing a job that you actually loved for a change. You’ve always been a fan art and Historical artifacts so you began working at a big historical museum in Paris.
You walked into the building passed security and across the huge building waving hi to the security guard. You walked straight to your office that's located towards the back of the building. You barely made it in when your boss who’s also the director and owner of the museum jogged up to you looking like a kid in Christmas and you know something must have happened to get him this excited. The two of you had been friends since you started working there, you where originally the tour guide to the place before he promoted you to the official Registrar of the museum.
"Y/N right on time, we need to talk about something important that just happened." He told you barely able to contain his excitement. You honestly wonder how this man is an adult and owns this place. He is like a child sometimes.
You quirked an eyebrow at him confused, "Sure, what is it?"
He pointed to your office door, "let's go to your office to talk privately. I don't want anyone to overhear.”
Nodding more confused, you opened the door and walked in with him behind you. He closes and locks the door, tugging you into the room making you more confused if possible. The both of you sat across from each other, you barely had the chance to ask again why he was so excited when he handed you two folded piece of paper. Looking confused you opened the first one and stared at it to find an old drawing of a three jewels. You looked confused when you saw it since it looked like a drawing of the jewels rather than an actual photo.
You looked up at your boss after you studied the two pages and the descriptions of the jewels along with what was used to create them. You remember hearing about these things going missing during a conversation you had with your coworker who was a guide here in the museum. When discussing missing jewelry or historical artifacts he had mentioned several different ancient royal jewels that had gone missing and mentioned these but you weren’t sure what this had to do with anything.
“Richard, do I want to know why you’re showing me these? These aren’t even in our museum I would know is my job to memorize anything and anyone that goes in or out of this place.” You wondered confused
He grinned excitedly, “Yes, They went missing centuries ago and we recently found them again and just so happens that they are secretly on their way here we wont put them on display of course.”
Your eyes widen in shock, “Really? How the hell did you find them?"
He shrugged grinning, "I honestly don't have a clue how they where found the important thing is I got my hands on them before anyone else did. The jewels where stolen and sold in the 1900s someone must have found them recently the crowns where destroyed but turns out they where stolen and hidden. That's as far as I know."
You nodded processing the information for a moment, "okay that makes sense sort of but wouldn’t they be prone to thieves though?”
He chuckled, “Yes, which is why I have a plan which is foul proof. I did not wanted us to suffer the same fate as the Toussaint so I’m going to change a few things here and there around this place but more importantly only you and I will have all the information and location.”
You shook your head at that. Being the only one with specific information only added more stress on you especially if you’re going to be put in charge of it which you knew you where based on the look you where given.
“I’m listening. What’s this infamous information.” you told him slightly sarcastic earning a chuckle
He looked satisfied with your reply and sat back explaining the importance of having the word not get out that those jewels where discovered. He went into greater details on how they where going to get them in the museum, how they where going to be hidden, secured and how they where going to up the security and his crazy idea of adding a few decoys in other locations when you asked why the decoy he looked at you sheepish and said he took the idea from the Met when it was discovered Klugger was wearing a fake so he was borrowing the idea just in case. After he was done explaining which took up an hour or so you looked baffled.
“This better not backfire on us.” you sighed and got up getting ready for work to distract yourself leaving a smug owner in your office.
************
Most of the morning was uneventful and slightly dreadful. There was a tour by a Primary school which was stressful given how some of the kids wanted to run off on their own when their teacher and tour guide was not looking. At one point one of them almost knocked something over since they went past the security point forcing you to run and steady the item and pointing out to the teacher to keep a better eye on her students. You where of curse polite and respectful about it despite your patience being tested.
It wasn’t until the afternoon where everything started to go south. It was a lot busier an old lady freaked out believing that one of the old priceless painting was hers and tried to steal it not to mention she had a cane and smacked you with it a few times until she was escorted away from the area. You where pretty sure you where going to bruise a little. You could not help but wonder how does an old lady able to swing the cane that forcefully. So is safe to say you where in a really bad mood. You walked past the Egyptian wing and paused when you heard a childlike giggle. You walked over just in time to see yet another child trying to get past the safety line and getting inside the security glass. You ran over and stopped him before something tragic happened and fixed the glass. You couldn’t help but glare at the kid. The kid backed up but you grabbed his arm.
“Where are your parents?” You asked in a serious tone he didn’t say anything only pointed to the other side of the Egyptian wing. You walked him over to them to find them both on their phone you tapped their shoulder interrupting the careless parents.
“Yes?” the arrogant mother asked
“Is this your kid?” You asked trying to not sound rude and snap after earning a nod from both you spoke up before they can say anything, “Please keep your kid close to you I just found him nearly knocking over an artifact.”
The father took the kid and narrowed his eyes scolding his son for walking out of their side and misbehaving deciding to punish the kid by taking him home earning a temper tantrum.
“Bill don’t be harsh he didn’t mean it I’m sure we could have paid for the damages.” The mother scolded her husband
You rolled your eyes at that and said, “Yeah, ma’am keep him close and for the record neither of us can afford that thing. Instead of being on your phone how about showing your kid a good time if you payed attention to him he wont have any need to destroy the place. This is the third time I had to stop him.” you turned around and walked off not even bother with civility anymore.
You turned around and stormed off to keep an eye on the rest of the of the museum hoping nothing more will happen. You where in a bad mood and ready to go home. You walked around the corner only to collide with someone causing you to tumble back at that same moment you felt something cold splash all over you. Looking down you realized it was just water.
“Fuck. Watch where you’re walking.” the woman snapped
You glared up at her to find a pair of light blue eyes glaring right back you belonging to a tall platinum blonde woman. You looked down to find her shirt was also wet and she was holding a half empty cup.
“First of all watch where YOU’RE walking, second of all no cellphones and third off I wasn’t the one walking with a cup filled with what ever that was you’re not allowed to have liquids in this section only the lobby’s lounge area blonde.” You snapped right back
“What the fuck I was walking here you’re the one who crashed into me and be glad it was water and I’m allowed to take pictures what kind of fucking museum is this.” the woman snapped
You rolled your eyes, “That’s what bottles of water are for genius.”
That only pissed off the blonde even more, “First of all this use to be soda before I finished it and emptied my water in here second of all fuck you, you’re rude as fuck.”
Both of you glared daggers at each other clearly pissed off. Any other circumstance you would have admired how attractive and how her closed hugged her body just right but not right now. Right now you where actively glaring daggers' at her for being a rude bitch. Why the hell are the hot ones always rude and obnoxious. You wondered
You saw her unlocked phone and narrowed your eyes pointing to a sign, “You can’t take pictures in this section new rule only certain areas are allowed to have pictures taken put that phone away”
“What the fuck. First of all none of the other staffs have said shit the only uptight complaining is you second of all I only took some pictures.” The woman snapped
“I need to check your phone.” You told her. it wasn’t that you where out to get her but it was a rule and this particular area no one was allowed to take pictures ever since last year most museums and locations holding expensive items became more strict
“NO.” The woman all but growled
“I need to see it.” You said beginning to loose your patients you said hell with professionalism and snatched it looking through the pictures she took earning a protest trying to snatch it back and you stopped her with a sharp glare and grabbing her free hand. You found a few pictures of statues that are pretty heavy. You looked suspiciously at the glaring woman and handed her the phone back.
“We don’t allow phones anymore miss. Put that away.” you told her for the second time sharply
Lou glared at you not appreciating the bad treatment, “Why not the other museums allow it and I don’t appreciate having my phone snatched from me.”
“Not anymore. Blame the moron who decided team up with Klugger and steal that Toussaint necklace. Lucky them the insurance agent is dumb as fuck. No one allows phone anymore let along pictures being taken. Now either chug that drink or I’m snatching it with your phone and not returning them.” you warned and stormed off to try and clean up your top leaving a very pissed off blonde behind.
What the fuck is wrong with her? Fucking rude. You thought pissed off. You spoke sharply through your walky-talky’s earpiece to have someone clean up the spill and stormed off to your office deciding it was better do paperwork than to deal with guests.
~Lou~
It wasn’t until you stormed away when Lou realized you where the woman Debbie mentioned that had all the information and cursed at that.
Great, Getting information from someone like her will be nearly impossible. Lou thought glaring at the spot you where just in.
Lou stormed out of the building determined to get something out of you but knew it will be impossible since she knew you will probably keeping a close eye on her after that horrible interaction. Lou got even more angry when she remembered you boldly snatching her phone and probably erasing some of the pictures she had taken from the interesting objects there.
“Fucking rude uptight b.” Lou complained angrily while driving only to be interrupted by her phone. Lou drove towards the warehouse clearly pissed off evident in her feature, her posture was tense, her jawline clenched and she was gripping her steering wheel tightly. She chose to ignore the phone to annoyed to bother with answering.

Alarming stories have emerged of EU citizens being handcuffed at British airports, made to sleep in parked vans or prevented from accessing medication after being denied entry into the country under Brexit rules.
Ana Silvestre, 20, an Italian and Brazilian dual national, was refused entry at Luton airport on 8 May together with her Brazilian husband. She was handcuffed at the airport and left in a van overnight before being taken to Colnbrook detention centre, where she spent seven days before being sent back to Italy.
Silvestre’s sister, who has lived in Liverpool for two years, said she received “no information whatsoever if they were OK or where they were” after their arrival until her sister called from a phone given to her at the centre the following morning.
Under the protocols used at immigration removal centres, detainees have their phones taken away to prevent them from taking photos or videos, and they are often unable to access their baggage.
“When she called me, she was crying, and kept telling me that they were making them feel like criminals,” Silvestre’s sister said. “She told me they made them walk through the airport in handcuffs and she had never felt so humiliated in her entire life.”
Immigration staff at the airport refused to give Silvestre the birth control pills that control her polycystic ovary syndrome and also refused to give her husband his blood pressure medication, her sister claimed.
Other travellers who have been turned away in recent months as the government’s “hostile environment” policy on immigration is applied to EU citizens have said they were also denied access to medication.
Abi, 20, from Estonia, was accused of intending to work as an au pair and was locked up in Gatwick for 30 hours before being expelled at the end of last month. During her detention, she said, she had several panic attacks, vomited from fear, and was not allowed to retrieve a sedative from her luggage.
She was travelling alone for the first time to stay with family friends in Britain, and asked that the Guardian use a pseudonym.
“First they asked what I was doing in the UK and I said that I was visiting family friends,” she said. “After that they asked me the same question again, as if it was not the right response. Then I said I would be helping to watch their kids. So they immediately assumed that I was going to work as au pair.”
Border Force officers said they would call her friends but did not do so, and when her hosts rushed to Gatwick, the officers refused to speak to them face to face, she said.
“I had panic attacks. I hadn’t eaten or drunk anything because I was so sick to my stomach. Because of the fear and stress, I was so nauseous that finally I puked,” Abi said. “I was afraid that I would have a nervous breakdown, so I asked the security staff if I could get a sedative from my bag. They didn’t let me.”
Officials promised to take her somewhere to spend the night where she could get medical help, but eventually she was ordered to sleep in the airport holding room accompanied by two men who were also being expelled, she said.
Anaïs Lauretta, 25, from France, who was taken from Gatwick to Colnbrook and on to Yarl’s Wood detention centre for seven days after being denied entry on 26 February, said she was initially unable to access her antibiotics. “They were taken away,” she said.
On Friday, in response to reports in the Guardian and other European newspapers about EU nationals being detained, the Home Office announced a rule change allowing EU citizens stopped at the frontier to ask for bail in order to spend time with their friends or families in the UK awaiting their expulsion flight.
A Home Office spokesperson said: “While international travel is disrupted due to the pandemic, we have updated our guidance to clarify that overseas nationals, including EU citizens, who have been refused entry to the UK and are awaiting removal should be granted immigration bail, where appropriate.
“Now freedom of movement has ended, people from across the EU can continue to visit the UK, but those coming to work or study must meet our entry requirements and we urge them to check before travelling.”

Adèle will be part of a panel discussion with Nadège Beausson-Diagne, and Rokhaya Diallo.
ABOUT THE EVENT (some excerpts via google translate, you can read the whole thing on the link provided)
Paul B. Preciado
A NEW HISTORY OF SEXUALITY
October 15 - 19, 2020, at 5:00 p.m.
Large hall, Small hall, Cinema 2, Forum - Center Pompidou, Paris
Free admission, limited seating available
Every year since 2017, the Center Pompidou has offered a guest intellectual the opportunity to develop a thought project. For the year 2020, the institution is pleased to welcome Paul B. Preciado: philosopher and curator, he is one of the most important contemporary thinkers in the studies of gender, sexual politics and the body. On this occasion, Paul B. Preciado offers a public and performative seminar around a new history of sexuality, more than forty years after the fundamental work of Michel Foucault. Started last March and interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, the seminar returns in compact form from October 15 to 19, and is transformed into a “revolutionary cluster.”
“When we started the seminar at the Center Pompidou at the beginning of March, my objective was to make a new history of sexuality after Foucault, with Foucault and against Foucault. This new transfeminist, queer and anti-colonial history, starting from an analysis of the patriarchal and colonial infrastructure of modernity and intends to reflect on the ongoing transformations of technopolitical devices of violence and control of the living, but also on the different modalities of subjectivation critical. The first session was a huge constituent assembly of bodies against the norm. Then all of a sudden the virus and containment arrived. The sessions planned for the seminar have been suspended. The management of the virus has not only caused a health and economic crisis, but also a political and aesthetic crisis.
On the one hand, inequalities and forms of control and violence against sexual, racial and migrant minorities were amplified during the crisis. The unexpected interruption of the rhythms of production and consumption of neoliberal capitalism has allowed us to experience another life. The death of George Floyd in the United States at the hands of the police, and the trial of Adama Traoré in France quickly generated waves of protests, followed by an international movement of criticism and demand for the restriction of racial violence and institutional sexuality, both on the part of the police and other state administrations, inequalities and forms of control and violence against sexual, racial and migrant minorities were magnified during the crisis.
In this context, I decided to modify the initial program and move from a new, more theoretical, solo story of sexuality to a choral narration of the current revolutionary process. It is now a question of appealing to a multiplicity of politically active voices and bodies, in writing, philosophy, cinema, dance, contemporary art, theater, music ... which participate in the dismantling of the patriarchal and colonial infrastructure of society.
Here are the voices and bodies of the CLUSTER:
Sarah Diehl comes to speak to us about the new reproductive emancipation movements and the responses to neofascist sexual policies in Poland, Hungary, as well as in other apparently democratic contexts. Maria Galindowill share with us the challenge of the struggles of indigenous sex workers in Bolivia. François Vergès, Elsa Dorlin and Elisabeth Lebovici will help us read this process of emancipation in the context of a longer history of decolonization of feminism and queer struggles. Nadège Beausson-Diagne, Adèle Haenel and Rokhaya Diallo invite us to proliferate anti-patriarchal and anti-racist strategies within cinematographic and audiovisual representation in France. Shu Lea Cheang presents a performance that criticizes gender, gender and racial discrimination in rape trials. Kengne Téguía denounces the supremacy of the valid body and calls for an urgent critical organization of feminist, trans and anti-racist movements with disabled minorities. Virginie Despentes, Yseult and Melissa Laveaux, with writing and music, give shape to anger and summon the forces of poetry as engines of transformation of desire. And Volmir Cordeiro and Pol Pi make the body wounded by patriarchal and colonial violence dance and begin to compose a dance for the coming revolution.” ---Paul B. Preciado
