I want 2 thank my comrade Muriel, whom I have known almost all my life from us both having had gone 2 Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Church in Cincinnati as kids, for finding this old picture that i gave 2 her I'm sure right around the time it was taking which was around the fall of 1979 when i was going 2 school at Central State University because at that time all i wanted 2 do was become a professional footballer. Yes i do know that's a lot of handsome for one picture....hahaha Muriel thank you again. So what had happened was..... My friend since the 4th grade called me months ago and said that she was coming to visit during my spring break. I was so excited to be having a visitor. She arrived on last Monday and we hit the ground running. 

Being a transplant can be tough, that is why it’s important to have friends and family that will travel to see you in your habitat away. Karyn and I have gone to the same school since 4th grade. Even our colleges were across the street from each other. Life takes us on a variety of courses and our paths met once again and it was like just add water. 

I live in South Central, I commute by bus and I live a very minimalist lifestyle. The great thing about your Cleveland friends is that none of that stuff matters. I had her all through the hoods of L.A. - she kept using her “Boyz In Tha Hood” references and tha ish had me rolling. Her favorite spot was the Mexican place on Broadway and Vernon called Taco Gavilan. The place totally reminds me of the chicken spot in Breaking Bad -insert side eye-. To watch my friend enjoy the most authentic food ever was priceless. FYI Taco Bell is not real..lol

One of the days we decided to be cultural and we ventured off down the street to The California African American Museum, which is free to the public. They have a wonderful exhibit right now that commemorates and reminded us of the L.A. Riots in 1992. The exhibit showcases the issues that lead up to the civil unrest. It also had a place on the wall where you could write down a remedy to the problems that we face in our communities and hang it up.  The best part of the museum was when a little chocolate natural hair girl, who was about 7 or 8 ran up to me to tell me that she liked my natural hair. I definitely told her that I liked hers and we shared in a very special Black Girl Magic moment.

The next stop was Chic Filet on the lovely campus of USC. We then hopped on the nearby new Metro Expo Train and rode it all the way to the Santa Monica Pier. Fresh Pacific sun and air hit our faces and we beckoned unto the ocean. We ate a funnel cake on the pier and rode the ferris wheel just like were friends in Mrs. Holloway’s class again. 

The next day she wanted to see black folx, so I took her to the  Game and Sports Lounge in Inglewood also known as the G.S. We saw the Patty Pies dude and his crew singing , but were underwhelmed. There aren’t too many cool places to go for that in L.A. anymore. Gentrification has done a number on the black populous here. African Americans only represent 6.6% of the millions of  people that live in L.A. and I don’t think the natives have realized that their numbers are so low. 

Friday we went to Hollywood and walked the stars and popped in and out of every souvenir shop - cause the chick is considerate-.We then we ended up at my longtime L.A. friend Kengi’s house who lives right off of Hollywood BLVD. That’s when the good trouble began. We had a few cocktails, laughed caught an Uber to his artist friend Carlos’ apartment near China town. Left there and went and got tacos at Guisanos in DTLA . We then met up with MORE friends, went around the corner to some new tequila bar and laughed til we couldn’t anymore. It was a great example of a random L.A. night.

On the last night I redeemed myself for the GS debacle. I took her to  Pips on Labrea - which is black owned I presume-.  She was able to catch a live jazz trio. The gag is that Layla Hathaway was in the building for someone’s birthday party and by the end of the night she ended up sitting right next to us to have dinner . Not too bad for this ol’ Midwest Girl in A Cali World huh?

The more poignant point of this story has all of the undertones of us being under-privileged , at risk kids growing up in gritty Cleveland, but being a part of the Magnet program which kept us college bound. Fast forward to years later still making something of ourselves and being able to live a life that our parents struggled for. My friend re-affirmed some stuff that I lost along the way. We reminisced, we giggled and we promised to do it all over gain next year. Cheers to my girl Karyn Dukes!
