“”I watched from my bedroom window as the Wash House burned in 1963.” I know that many of you here remember or were on campus during the 1972 fire that gutted the Great Stone Barn in the North Family. Fewer of you, however, may know about the two February 1963 fires that destroyed the Wash House (which served as Darrow’s dining hall) behind Hinckley House and the original Dairy Barn (which was the school’s gymnasium, and then temporarily served as dining hall following the first fire). These fires were set by three Darrow students. They first burned the Wash House (dining hall), hoping to be sent home, but Darrow moved meals to the Dairy Barn. Then they burned the Dairy Barn, and students were sent home. The “Tin Can” building (which was a Hands to Work storage shed for many years) was then purchased to serve as the dining hall while the new Dairy Barn was under construction. At least one class (1963? 1964?) had their prom in that outbuilding! Surprisingly, one of the three arsonists returned to Darrow the following academic year; the other two did not. I remember hearing that they were eventually caught because one of the two who did not return bragged about it.”
