He finds the rain soothing and calming to him because it’s one of the only things that he can’t destroy so it gives him peace of mind that he still human and isn’t the completely destructive monster everyone claims him to be. ~

With leaks out I’m eager to move the conversation away from fandom woes and back to the story, but before I do that I wanted to thank everyone for their messages. I received quite a few in the last 24 hours that I want to acknowledge but to spare everyone’s dashes I’ll answer them together below the cut. It’s rare for me to respond to an anon like that. When I do it, it’s usually because it hits on something I’m feeling. In this case it was frustration at my inability to reach across the fandom fence to those who see the story differently. I want to assure everyone that the hate anons themselves don’t bother me. When I reply to one it’s usually because it’s a leaping off point for something else that’s been on my mind. 

So thanks for putting up with it. I don’t necessarily need the support because I know it’s always there, but it’s nice seeing it.

Honestly? I always feel sort of icky after I roast someone. A dear friend once told me that I needed to measure how hard I throw my stones and I’ve never forgotten that. This is my blog so I control the conversations. I’m potentially broadcasting those conversations to thousands of people. I’m in the power position here. Bullies are cowards so standing up to them in any form usually sends them running. I want them to leave me alone, true, but I also don’t want to needlessly aggravate whatever underlying condition is fueling their rage. It’s a hard thing to balance. I know it’s entertaining to watch an anon get roasted, and I’m not above that I guess, but a measure of guilt sets in after I do.

June 3rd 2020 Some of these anons defending Eren/yeagerists/genocide don't even look like real and proper Eren fans, since even a fan can be objective about it (no offense). It has me facepalming, since I'm an Eren fan myself (tied with Armin for favorite), but this can make us look bad. Genocide will never be justifiable, and while I don't think he's really going for that, I do know Isayama promised he'd be more "self-focused" compared to Armin's more "globalism" mindset, and it's been showing in other ways. In fact, I'm actually rooting for Armin and co (but especially Armin in particular, though) to stop Eren somehow, even if I do also want them to somehow save him.

I think it must be hard to be an Eren fan right now since the Eren fandom is so diverse and polarized. There are Eren fans who see him as a hero and support his genocide plan, there are new Eren fans who only became interested in him once he became villain, there are fans who've always loved Eren but are now heartbroken by his behavior, and then there are Eren fans who believe his plan doesn’t include genocide at all. There’s very little commonality among those groups except they all love Eren and they are all “proper fans.” 

I hear your frustration though. Every fandom has fringe groups who make the most noise and are an embarrassment to the rest of the community. I think that’s the case here

Regarding the actual tweet, I responded to the statement that Eren should be with Historia because she looks like both his and Zeke’s mothers by calling it warped logic. Not my finest moment perhaps but that statement made my skin crawl.

I had to google “fanpol” when I got this message because I wasn’t entirely sure what they meant. I know I don’t do things like attack, repress or censor others, but I also know that there is plenty of legitimate frustration over blogs that are viewed as influential, and especially for meta blogs.  Meta writers can be mistaken as authorities. People who feel differently can feel isolated and marginalized by that. Because of my length of time in the fandom and my way of speaking, I am aware that my words have weight and can influence fandom ideas. I understand how that’s a problem for some people. This is one of those things I’ve done soul searching on but I’ve come up blank as to what to do about it.  But thank you for this anon. You said that you don't have to choose a Ray in Due South, because both Rays are wonderful for different reasons. Can you talk about those reasons? I love RayV, but I've had a hard time liking Kowalski. There's something about his personality that irritates me.

Sure! 

Remember, that all of this is my opinion, and one that has been shaped and polished by 20 years of fanfic. This is also long, hence it’s under the cut :D

I wanna begin by saying that I loved Ray V first. When I started watching Due South (because I read a .rtf fic names XDS - a crossover between X-Files, Due South, and Star Wars that I came to though Star Wars and read because I knew X-Files and figured I could learn enough about Due South to make it work), the show was playing on TNT in the afternoons, and may have actually been *before* Ray Kowalski made an appearance. 

I watched the first two seasons, I started reading Due South fic alongside Star Wars fic. I discovered Slash, and read a few Ray V/Fraser stories with my Luke/Wedge and Luke/Biggs fic, but at the time I was mostly reading Fraser/Frannie or Fraser/Thatcher. 

I didn’t dislike Fraser/Ray V, but I was young -- young enough that I worried about my parents finding the one slash fic that I dared print out (my dad had the internet, my mom didn’t. So, I’d print out stories on the weekend and read them over the week). 

Then I found out about Ray K and I stopped watching Due South. I was pissed! You can’t just replace one half of the duo! It doesn’t work like that! But, eventually, I came back. I missed Fraser, and figured I’d give Ray K a shot - and I loved him. They knew not to make him try and fill the same niche - and, when they finally met, the clash between them was perfectly done to highlight the different roles they filled. I dived headfirst into Fraser/Ray K fic (partially because I was older and had lost my hesitation around slash fic, and partially because my mom had finally gotten the internet). 

And that, I think, is the crux of the issue. Ray V and Ray K offer Fraser a different relationship because they’re different people and satisfy different needs - thus telling a different story. 

Let’s begin with Ray V. 

When you look at the beginning of the series, Fraser, like the protagonist of any fantasy story, is orphaned (literally, the first scene is Bob Fraser’s death) and alone- he’s the odd duck, the isolated character to facilitate his travel. it’s hard to go off and be a hero when you have responsibilities at home (hence why in Star Wars Luke doesn’t leave Tatooine until Owen and Beru are killed, or why Harry Potter is hated by the Dursleys). With no siblings (yet), and his mother and grandparents dead before the series, Fraser has no family. 

The driving force of the series is thus born, Fraser is looking for the killers of his father - the last of his family (even if he was a terrible father). The family relationships in the show are all very important, and are highlighted in different ways, thus giving us the theme of the Ray V seasons - the importance of family. 

Because, Ray V is *lousy* with family in a way that most Italian-American families are - you don’t always like your family, but you *all* gather for dinner when Ma makes her Sunday Gravy. And, in the *pilot* when he’s known this crazy mountie for less than 12 hours, he invites Ben HOME to his FAMILY for FOOD. (Ben is clearly uncomfortable, and it’s played for comedy, but it’s also heartbreaking. Ben is not used to effusive emotion --or any emotion-- and he is certainly not used to so many people acting like such a family.) Ray, in a sense, adopts Fraser. 

Now, you can say that taking Fraser home could be a “meeting the family” moment, like bringing home a new girlfriend. Ray is defensive of Fraser’s honor when Frannie hits on him, after all. 

But, there’s something about it that smacks more of *family* to me - he brought Ben home to be his *brother* and give Ben the surrogate family he has missed. (hence why Frannie throws herself at him - and also why Fraser keeps turning her down. Textually it’s because she’s his best friend’s sister, but thematically, she’s his new sister as well) 

Further, Ray V doesn’t react with jealousy when Victoria blows into down on her ill wind - he’s proud, and supportive, and then defensive when he realizes how terrible she is for Ben. 

I mean, yeah, Mrs. Fraser does dance with Ray V, but it’s because Ray V is the “safe” option. Now, if you want to say that’s because Ray V and Fraser are lovers? I can see why! It was certainly important in the few fics I have read, and I see it.

I think, ultimately, Ray V as Fraser’s New Family was the intent of the writers, and the writing on this show is *tight*. It makes sense that, with a plot focused on finding what ended your old family, you find new family. 

But then came the brief hiatus, Paul Gross taking over more creative control, and Collum Keith Rennie. PG said in an interview that they’d taking Ray K in a new direction, “very homoerotic, the fans will love it”

And...they did. Ray V’s telephone call - the ache in his voice because he knows that he’s not gonna be able to say goodbye (like Bob) is palpable, and feels almost like a breakup, signaling a shift in tone. This is no longer a show about the search for family - Ben found his family. Even with Ray V off screen, there’s no doubt that Fraser is a Vecchio -- but about finding a *parter* 

There’s red ships and green ships but no ships like partnerships. 

This half of the show gives us not only this line, but highlights the relationship between Buck and Bob (that was began in Ray V’s season), and focuses more than ever on pairing Fraser off (with more female love interests than Victoria, even though none of them pan out) and on Ray K’s divorce. 

Textually, they are two bachelors lonely for love. Thematically, the focus is on romantic parings, not brotherhood. 

“A partnership is like a marriage, son” 

Ray K comes in, and he doesn’t try to be Fraser’s brother. Fraser has a brother, and wouldn’t welcome Ray K to try and fill Ray V’s shoes. They spend an entire episode showing all the way Ray K would never wear Ray V’s shoes (and not just because Ray K wears boots like Steve McQueen and Ray V wears Italian Leather), and also showing us that Ray K *is there for Fraser anyway*, symbolically taking a bullet the way Ray V did. 

(We also see Ray K fall hard for Fraser’s sister in a way that’s dropped, showing the audience, thematically and sub-textually, what they can’t textually because of the censors)

This new Ray, he’s sharp, he’s prickly, he’s “d-u-m, dumb” the way Vecchio was slick, as a way to disarm and play off of the straight forward image of Fraser’s serge. He’s a paradox - a crack shot who wears glasses, a vulnerable tough guy, a romantic punk. He gets under Fraser’s skin in such a way that Fraser begins to relax around him as well. I admit, I have an existing fondness for the tough-guy-with-a-heart-of-gold, and Ray K is that to a T. He’s not perfect (stalking his X, hello), but he tries to be better, and that I appreciate. It makes him a dynamic character. He has a temper, but he flashes quickly and then cools - it’s a good foil to Fraser’s simmering anger. 

Remember, Fraser told Ray V about Victoria, and Ray V was sleeping. 

Fraser tells Ray K about Gerrard. and Muldoon. and Bob. 

Ray K tells Fraser about Stella. and the Bank. and Beth Botrelle. 

The audience gets more of Fraser underneath his serge as a result of his relationship with Ray K - who is, himself, an “orphan” (estranged and living at a distance, his closest “family” is his ex-wife) can connect with Fraser on that level because he gets it in a way that Ray V, who has never not had his family, can’t fully. 

All of this comes to a head in the finale, when the Rays meet, and we see them clash - this is the “bringing the boyfriend home” moment. Ray K, the “boyfriend” meets Ray V, the “brother”, and the Brother wants to know if the boyfriend is good enough. They tense, and then they both go after Fraser because Fraser draws people in his wake like he walked through a line of streamers. 

They go north, and Ray K steps up as Fraser’s parter, taking an interest in the North in a way that Ray V never did (Ray K goes on the quest, Ray V tried to install modern plumbing). An that quest? The closest to “ride off together into the sunset” that I’ve seen outside of Disney. 

Ultimately, Ray V sees Fraser like his family: He doesn’t need to understand him, because he loves him and that’s what families do. 

Ray K sees Fraser like his spouse: What he doesn’t already understand, he tries to because it’s important to Fraser to be understood. 

Both are amazing partners for Fraser to have. Both fill different niches. Both are telling different stories.

Thoughts on Heathers UK?

I made a huuuge post about it after I listened to the audio boot but my blog searching is dead rn bc staff is useless so recap of my thoughts:

The JD’s acting is RIDICULOUS and lowkey insulting he’s like…. trying to sound “crazy” so hard in act two he’s literally doing cartoon voices

Similarly, the Mac is so focused on doing that stupid baby voice that she’s pitchy at times and doesn’t blend with the other voices well.

Yet again they continue to cast Duke as a woman of color, and her actress is talented and deserves props but you can’t ignore the implications of ALL the main characters being white except her in every big production of the shown with the same people involved, while they also villainize her way more than the other girls.

They kept a bunch of censored lines from the high school version in the new script, because that’s really in the spirit of Heathers.

The two new songs, You’re Welcome and I believe Never Shut Up Again? Sound completely different than the other songs and stand out, not in a good way. It’s like the whole feel of the show pauses for these songs, it’s way too obvious they were added later. They claimed Blue was replaced because it didn’t properly capture the severity of the situation and convey that Kurt and Ram are predators and date rapists enough, and You’re Welcome does have some more straight forward lyrics I guess? But the entire song is still treated like a joke and is even sillier than it’s predecessor at times. Never Shut Up Again just makes me even more uncomfortable with the fact that they only cast WOC as Duke, its a stereotypical soulful song about how much of a strong independent bitch she is. It was added in response to critique that Duke has no characterization in the show, but the entire song is just the same bitchy “IM in charge now” message she has the rest of the show.

The company is publicly endorsing K//Ram, the gay ship between two rapists? It’s on their merch and they use it as a tag a lot.

have you ever shipped any other ships besides sheith? and what other tv shows or fandoms have you been apart of in the past?

asdfklfg there are so many video games and shows and stuff that I love I feel like to try naming them all is a futile effort, so I’ll just save you time and mention some other ships I like lmao. Admittedly I’m not into shipping really, so it has to be something I really really like. Sometimes I just ship stuff jokingly. Anyway, I assume you mean ships from other series, so:

For those of you who want canon lgbt representation in a mech show, might I suggest Evangelion, which has a bisexual protagonist who ends up with a requited romantic interest in this alien guy who is just unconditionally kind and supportive. And in a show where basically all the other relationships are portrayed as inherently damaging, manipulative, or abusive in some way, theirs is built entirely on mutual love and understanding. The contrast is both refreshing and healing, and it really warms my heart. 

Unfortunately, Kowaru isn’t in the original for very long but he is in the Rebuild movies so I recommend watching 3.0 if you wanna see how fleshed out their relationship ends up being. I have a lot of feelings about these two in 3.0 and certain scenes always get me. It’s so sweet to see how implicitly Kowaru trusts Shinji though, and in a world where everyone else is telling him he can’t change and there’s no way to repair the damage he’s done, Kaworu still takes his hand and tells him it’ll be okay. That no one’s beyond redemption and there’s always something you can do to try and make amends, to move forward. Actually, I think my love for their relationship is what made me so drawn to sheith, mutual love and support is very much my thing

I love Fire Emblem. And since I’ve only played FE 13 and 14, by the simple virtue of the support system, I have sO MANY SHIPS!! SO MANY!! For those who don’t know, you get a whole army in FE. And in 13 and 14, by pairing units up and having them interact, you can get their relationship up to different ranks. If two units achieve S-rank they get married, and usually have a kid. And you can pair up literally like everyone in your army, so…ya…LOTS of ships. How many times have I restarted my game to marry my pc to someone new?  More times than I should have. Henry was my the first person I married my pc to though so I have lots of FE ships but there’s a special place in my heart for him and Robin lmao

FENRIS AND HAWKE!! This is a conversation I can’t even really get into because if I start then I won’t stop, but just know he’s my favorite romance option in Dragon Age and I love him a lot. He’s also like, my one  main play through love interest who didn’t run off and leave me too so that was cool. Except, then Hawke ran off and died in Inquisition…I fucked that up, I’m so sorry Fen…Anyway, I really feel for him. He’s overcome so much and he’s trying so hard to heal. And recovery is never simple or easy.  

it’s frustrating, it’s upsetting, it’s heartbreaking. But he always tries to do better. And he’s never just “the grumpy elf” everyone jokes that he is. He plays cards with Varric and Donnic. He tries to talk things out with Anders after one of his quests, tries to offer some advice and help him (even after all the fighting that’s gone on between them). He laughs at Hawke’s bad jokes. He stands up and says he still doesn’t believe in defending mages, but he’ll help you because you’re his friend and he trusts you. And seeing Hawke help him open up to others, telling him that he’s not alone and they’ll help him–it always gets me.

And something interesting about his route is that he doesn’t hold it against you if you’re a mage. That’s literally a question you can ask–and I always do–and he’s honestly surprised you’d be concerned for him. He’s not “oh, yeah I hate mages, but I’ll make an exception for you.” He’s like “wait, why would that be a problem?? It’s fine you’re good, I like you.” I completely understand his feelings towards magic, but it’s still somewhat sweet–and I think in a way very healing–for him to become some open and trusting with mages like Bethany and Hawke. 

Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus! I grew up with Sailor Moon so it was a pretty big part of my childhood. Unfortunately, that also means I grew up with the dub, which tried to censor the relationship by claiming they were “cousins”…ya…guess how well that worked. Anyway, it made a lot more sense to find out they were meant to be romantically involved. Even though they’re apart from the other sailor scouts, I love how close they are with each other. And any time they did show up it was a big deal!! I looked forward to those episodes the most. Also, I definitely had a crush on Sailor Uranus as a kiddo lmao. Neptune is very lucky 

Duck and Fakir from Princess Tutu–I was like, extremely opposed to it at first. I was really rooting for Duck to get her prince!! To finally dance with the prince and win true love and the whole shebang, every time she made some progress with him I was so damn happy for her, I really wanted them to be together!! I wanted that perfect storybook ending! But the background for Tutu is that it is a story, but it’s one where the author dies before its completion and all the characters are left to their own devices–doing their best to avoid their destined tragic end. So I didn’t want Duck’s love to just be for nothing, I really wanted her to be with the prince because it was just something she wanted so bad. 

But then she and Fakir ended up getting closer!! They start working together and he steps in and saves her. He finds out about her real identity and still supports her. He puts his own misgivings aside and realizes they have to help each other. And then Duck starts warming up to him too, and honestly? This is like, a ship where I can say I literally had a Moment where I realized I was in deep and that was it. Because Duck has that dream. That same old perfect dream where she’s dancing with her prince. But then when she finally turns to look up at his face–bAM, it’s Fakir instead. And she just wakes up all frantic anD SHE’S LIKE “OH NO OH SHIT I LIKE HIM” and meanwhile I’m over here crying like “oH NO!! I SHIP IT!!” Totally won me over

N from Pokemon and either trainer Black or White. “Leo why are you shipping stuff in a pokemon game,” you’ll probably say. And fair point. But I also say–this dork runs off on his own and leaves you! But I got so attached!! Listen, this was the first time pokemon had one of those fancy closeup cutscenes, and when his face was suddenly on the screen I like pANICED I was like “wHAT IS THIS SORCERY” and like jumped in surprise asjfdkl it fucking scared me. And  then, he kept surprising me!! This was the one game where fighting the Elite 4 wasn’t the end of it. Oh no. This boy fucking summons a giant goddam castle out of the fUCKING GROUND and makes you walk like 2000 steps to go fight hIM instead!! 

Boy I didn’t even get to fight the champion! I’ve gone years with this status quo and now you’re just shaking shit up! I also wanna point out the beginning cutscene is his coronation and I literally turned off the game and popped out the cartridge to double check this was still pokemon cause I was like “what the shit.” He also has ninjas, that’s a thing. Anyway, at the end of the game he’s like “Follow your dreams!!” and then juMPS OFF THE FUCKING EDGE OF A CLIFF AND I WAS LIKE WAIT NO–but then like a second later you see he actually jumped and landed safely on his dragon and I was like “oh ok good oh my god ok alright cool cool.” 

and then hE FLIES OFF!! TO GO DO SOME SOUL SEARCHING!! HE’S GONE FOR YEARS! THEN BLACK/WHITE RUNS OFF AFTER HIM! AND THEN theY’Re gone for years and then in the goddam sequel N comes back but they’re still looking for him they like literally just missed each other I’m so mad!! Just reunite!! We rode a ferris wheel together and you told me you were a king, it was so romantic!! and then at the end of the sequal he’s like “That trainer was very important to me, I’m going to go find them and tell them how I feel,” like yES!! YES!! GO, YOU DO THAT BRO! STOP SITTING UNDER YOUR RUINED CASTLE AND GO DO THAT! 

Also, most importantly–the MC and Anghel from Hatoful Boyfriend. Why? Because Hatoful is the single greatest dating sim ever conceived and these dorks are the best that’s why
