How aware do you think the kids are of their father, uncles and aunt’s childhood? I can see both it being an unspoken thing, but then a drunk Rhys or Arthur occasionally letting something slip. And would they ever talk about their mother?
I think stories from what Arthur considers his halycon childhood between the 1st and 4th century C.E have slipped through. Even with the Roman invasion and the displacements it caused and Boudicca's revolt that literally scorched themselves into a layer of ash still visible today in English archaeology, he remembers being relatively protected and high status both in the Roman world and in the British. Britain under the Roman empire wasn't the most important place in the empire but there were a lot of natural resources the British exploited, and conflict along the borders of northern England and southern Scotland made and unmade several emperors, with at least one being crowned in England iirc. Eirian was forced to negotiate with Lucius (a tentative name for Rome) about Rhys and Arthur but she did keep all four of them close. So Arthur remembers her and references her most when doing human activities done even in a modified sense, since the dawn of time. Things like spinning weaving and ship building he learned at her hand even if his memories of that are kind of bundled into Brighid too. The first apple crop after the Romans introduced them to England, the emptying of the beehives for winter storage, being taught to draw his bow against his cheek and shoot straight. Being scolded for running off without his cloak because he was a high energy ambitious little shit who never thought things through. Those things and the mentions or her make it into his children's lives.
They're less aware of who Eirian was as a person because Arthur especially looks at his earliest years under her guiding hand with rose coloured glasses so thick he's looking at anything pre 500s like this. But they are aware of her existence.
Tumblr media
He leaves out the headhunting or maybe not really human sacrifice (the mine level amount of salt I have with the popular interpretation of Lindow man is kind of insane.) He leaves out executions and exile, torture and terror. Eirian loved her children in the way Boudicca did. The kind of love that leaves scorch marks in the earth for millennia. Her death was 1000 years before any of Alfred's generation came into being but considering that craters leave marks millions of years later, she's a presence.
It is a lot of So much of what we consider "Celtic" today is a result of the Celtic revival of the 19th century. Most profoundly in Ireland, but also to a fairly wide extent in Scotland, Wales and surprisingly for me who studied the lionization of the Anglo-Saxons by the British empire, England as well. So Eirian was a shadowy but present figure. The diaspora in the U.S. Canada, Australia and NZ often being referred too as Anglo-celtic gives me brain rot. This perception of her as viewed by children, particularly Arthur, something still concrete and visible. A lot of who Eirian was surrounded this lot as they're growing up. Just in Arthur's Manor house I think there are post holes from roundhouses, reused Romano-British masonry in the first floor, Viking age bodies in the back garden. At least one statue of her that either survived when the anglos saxons reused old Roman and British villas or that was uncovered in church foundations or even an actual pig sty (this actually happens) is around the house.
Also... There's one headcanon I've had for a very long time where he always waits for them to wake up and start breathing again if it happens around him. Sitting vigil through a long night, turning the other way when Matt outright leaves to go check on Alfred and watching him carefully for answers when he returns. He searched Matt's face for what news, what despair, what relief marked his expression when he returned from tugging Alfred's corpse from the piles of dead at Antietam. And that, I think, stems from Brittania's death. When the sun went dark in the sky and pestilence followed hot on the heels of famine and their mother did not wake. Not that last time however it happened. And that may be burned into their perception of their own deaths.
Tldr: God I'm never going to recover from the brain rot that one asinine piece of dialogue from the dub gave me.
Matt: "My Grandma taught me the true power of the maple leaf!"
Alfred: "Your Grandma sounds hot!"

St Helen’s Day
Tumblr media
Cima da Conegliano by Giovanni Battista. Source: Britannica.com
Today is St Helen’s (or St Helena’s) Day. Helen was the fiercely Christian mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine I, the first Christian Emperor, who on a trip to the Holy Land in 326, personally located the True Cross of Christ which she brought back in triumph to Rome (it was later transferred by her son to the new capital of the Empire, Constantinople). Given Helen’s impeccable Roman and Middle Eastern pedigree, it is curious that a number of English curative wells are named after her, notably the one at Walton, near Wetherby in Yorkshire. The Walton well is supposed to be good for curing eye ailments, particularly if the supplicants rub their infected eyes with a rag and then pin it to the well, in an exercise in sympathetic magic. Perhaps the St Helen connection is not so mysterious - her name sounds enough like the Celtic water-goddess Elen for ownership of places of curative magic to transfer to an imperial Christian saint.
Further pagan remembrances are associated with the skull of Theophilus Brome who died on this day in 1670 at Chilton Cantelo in Somerset. His skull put down roots in the house and could not be moved, the legend says, and when later tenants of the house tried to bury it, the skull let out a mournful and terrifying wail. The head was then left in peace until the early nineteenth century when it was briefly converted into a drinking vessel. These type of skull stories were an echo of ancient Celtic beliefs that the severed head possessed magical powers. If one drunk from a skull, the headhunting Celts believed, the virtues and courage of the deceased would pass to the imbiber.

Quote
There is also that custom, barbarous and exotic, which attends most of the northern tribes… when they depart from the battle they hang the heads of their enemies from the necks of their horses, and when they have brought them home, nail the spectacle to the entrance of their houses. At any rate Posidonius says that he himself saw this spectacle in many places, and that, although at first he loathed it, afterwards through his familiarity with it, he could bear it calmly.

Always fascinating to me when people are like "weren't the Celts headhunters tho" and then act as though Romans didn't conquer all of Europe and forcibly convert them to Abrahamic religions. As though Anglo Saxons didn't come and fuck around in Celtic land after the fall of the Roman empire (and then go on to commit further genocide in the Americas). As though the Norse weren't running Celtic-centered slave ships for thousands of years.
If Norse pagans and Greek/Roman pagans get to enjoy their long dead cultures without being chastised for historical atrocities, the Celts can celebrate and enjoy it too. Fuck you.

Psychological Warfare of the Barbarians
Tumblr media
Artwork by G. Rava
We often picture psychological warfare as defamatory propaganda, or we imagine sci-fi brainwave machines. Psychological warfare is much more simple than that, and it goes back to the dawn of humanity. Arguably, no one in the ancient past understood better the use of fear-inducing psychological warfare than barbarians. Multiple tactics were employed to stun and confuse their enemies. Note that the Greco-Romans were the ones to document these customs, but if anything it could be a testament to how effective these supposed tactics were at inducing awe.
The War-cry
“They have also those songs of theirs, by the recital of which ("baritus," they call it), they rouse their courage... For, as their line shouts, they inspire or feel alarm. It is not so much an articulate sound, as a general cry of valor. They aim chiefly at a harsh note and a confused roar, putting their shields to their mouth, so that, by reverberation, it may swell into a fuller and deeper sound.” - Tacitus, Germania
To yell in rage at your enemy is a very common mode of intimidation. Now imagine an entire force of angry warriors, rattling their shields, their combined bellows practically shaking the heavens. It would be an awesome, and demoralizing, sight, right before the whole of them charge like madmen. The Celts too were recorded as having war-cries, and one could make the fair assumption that plenty of other barbarian cultures had their own.
Scarring
“...the cheeks of the children are deeply furrowed with the steel from their very birth, in order that the growth of hair, when it appears at the proper time, may be checked by the wrinkled scars, they grow old without beards and without any beauty...” - Ammianus Marcellinus, The Roman History
This seems like an extreme practice if its only intent was to prevent hair growth. Perhaps the beard-loss was a side affect rather than the intention. Intimidation was a tactic frequently employed by the Huns on a mass scale, much like the Mongols of Genghis Khan, in their efforts to subdue everyone around them. Scarring the faces of their warriors could be one of them, a way to project pain tolerance and a fearsome appearance.
Scalping and Headhunting
“...each man hangs [the scalp of an enemy] on the bridle of the horse which he rides, and prides himself on it, for whoever has the greatest number of these skin napkins is accounted the most valiant man.” - Herodotus, History
“When their enemies fall they cut off their heads and fasten them about the necks of their horses. .. The heads of their most distinguished enemies they embalm in cedar-oil and carefully preserve in a chest, and these they exhibit to strangers...” - Diodorus Siculus, The Library of History
The head is a person’s identity: their unique face, the source of their thoughts. Celtic belief even held the head as the home of the soul, so collecting an enemy’s head would thus be taking his existence. Herodotus claims that the Scythians scalped their enemies, then he also claims that they collected the heads of their “greatest enemies” and went so far as making drinking cups out of their gilded skulls. Little else could be more demoralizing than to see the heads of your comrade paraded around, and worse, turned into vessels for leisurely drinking.
Nudity
“The Insubres and Boii wore their trousers and light cloaks, but the Gaesatae had discarded these garments owing to their proud confidence in themselves, and stood naked, with nothing but their arms, in front of the whole army...” - Polybius, Histories
Several sources attest to some Celtic warriors stripping bare and fighting without armor. Celts did have armor, and it’d be foolish to think they didn’t use it. Undoubtably, the majority of vast majority of Celtic warriors kept their clothing on. If they did trip, it was probably only from the waist-up. Polybius offers the explanation that some stripped their clothing to avoid it being snagged on bramble. Plausible, but there’s room for a different explanation. Bearing your nude body to an enemy, when a physically-fit warrior, would be an intimidating sight. It says that you’re unafraid of your enemy’s weapons. Come at me!
Divide and Conquer
“And as they are lightly equipped for swift motion, and unexpected in action, they purposely divide suddenly into scattered bands and attack, rushing about in disorder here and there, dealing terrific slaughter...” - Ammianus Marcellinus, The Roman History
I’d be remiss not to follow-up my previous statement of Hun intimidation tactics. The most practical application of their fear-inducing strategies was in their battle tactics. Charging expertly on horseback, the Huns came at their enemies, then swiftly wheeled around and shot at them with arrows. This sudden shift in direction was meant to shock and then disorient whoever was unlucky enough to be on the other end of their arrows. To great impact they used this strategy.

Surprising things you have to be aware about the Celts
Tumblr media
1. The Celts paid interest to their hygiene
Many thanks to these Romans accounts because the Celts are thought as scruffy, smelly and dirty. However, the archaeological proof showed that this is really far from true. The Celtic spots have that abundance of grooming apparatus like hair pins and combs. There is even proof that it’s the Celts that presented the soap to the Romans, and that it has been mandatory in most tribes for the guys to bathe even before enjoying their dinner.
2. They were headed-seekers
Even though lots of the Roman thoughts regarding the Celts were being exaggerated or really inaccurate, they performed some traditions that had been barbaric. One of those grimmer aspects of this Celtic tradition was their practiced for headhunting. These Celts believed that the human souls dwelled in heads, and after victory during the battle Celtic warriors could decapitate their rivalry. Having a bigger collection of rivalry heads was the sign of reputation to the Celts, which they would go so far to decorate those doors into their houses with heads of their foes to illustrate off how victoriously they had been in the battle. At a single spot in France there had a pillar with exclusive niches carved out in displaying those severe heads.
3. They developed armaments long before the rivals
The truth the Celts had been able to spread crosswise the bigger part of Europe area and stayed so long was possibly due to the advanced weaponry. This Hallstatt Culture has been one of the primary to accept iron for their weapons, which has been far superior to this bronze weapons applied by the rivals. The edge on their participants – perhaps more accurately illustrated as their fatalities – has been something they seize full advantage of how to grow their kingdom and then spread far further than could otherwise had been possible.

On European history pre 13th c.
People forget things like:
Celtic headhunting and altar full of skulls
Achilles’ human sacrifices at the funeral games of Patroclus
Jewish soldiers during Roman Empire did not swear allegiance to the emperor
Teutonic knights attacked and killed Baltic people under the excuse of taking back Mary (mother of Jesus’)’s homeland

11 things you must do before 2019 begins!
Reading Time: 8 mins
2019 is just around the corner and though you might be winding down and getting ready for Christmas, there is still plenty that you could pack into 2018 to end the year on a serious high.
Don’t let the dark and cold stop you enjoying yourself. There’s loads going on that can enrich your life.
Here are 11 things you should do before 2019 begins…
1. Buy cheap tickets for West End shows
2. Get your self-assessment sorted
3. Avoid a £1,000 fine by updating your driving licence
4. Buy new stuff in the Boxing Day sales
5. Buy train tickets before the price hike
6. Go ice skating
7. Clear out your clutter
8. Catch up with old friends
9. Sort out your CV
10. Start your New Year’s resolutions
11. Start getting your finances in order
  1. Buy cheap tickets for West End shows
Definitely do before New Year: each year Get Into London Theatre hold an annual ticket promotion run by the Society of London Theatre so you can get cheaper tickets for over 50 top London shows.
Tickets are on sale now for performances from 1st January to 13th February and must offer a discount of at least 25%! Tickets are either £10, £20, £30 or £40 depending on the show and there are no booking or postage fees.
So don’t wait to pay full price for your tickets, get yours at a discounted rate at Get Into London Theatre. Make this your opportunity to see Wicked or The Lion King or any other show you’ve been dying to see.
If you’d like to know how to get cheaper tickets all year round then read our article on how to find cheap and last minute theatre tickets.
  2. Get your self-assessment sorted
If you’re self-employed and doing your tax returns online then the deadline is 31st January 2019 (if you’re doing a paper tax return you’re already late…the deadline was October 31st!)
Rather than waiting until January why don’t you take the weight off your mind and get it sorted out early? At least you won’t have to worry about getting any nasty fines!
Read our definitive guide to filing your tax return if you’re in any doubt.
  3. Avoid a £1,000 fine by updating your driving licence
This definitely one to do before New Year so that you remember!
If you haven’t updated your driving licence for a while then make sure it is still in date – and has the right photo – before the new year.
You are legally required to update your licence and your photo every ten years or else you could be hit with a £1,000 fine! To renew your driving licence there is a £20 charge, and you can do so via the DVLA website.
Equally if you have changed your name or your address you must notify the DVLA or you could also face a fine. If you just need to change your name or address you can do so for free on the DVLA website.
Read our full article on renewing your driving licence here.
  4. Buy new stuff in the boxing day sales
Knowing when to buy is the secret to being successful at this time of year. If you buy before Christmas you’re likely going to pay full price , but if you leave your buying until the new year the best bargains may be gone and prices will soon return to normal.
Your best bet is to hit the shops for the boxing day sales – all the prices will be down and you’ll be first in the queue for the best ones. Remember, these days it isn’t just about hitting the high street, don’t forget to shop online as well for, often, even better bargains!
In fact, even better (if you’re anti-social and hate the festive season anyway) is to start on the online sales on Christmas Eve. Yes. sounds wrong but loads of people are doing it and Christmas Day, rather sadly, is now one of the busiest days for online shopping!
  5. Buy train tickets before the price hike
When it comes to buying train tickets, purchasing in advance should be your first port of call no-matter what time of the year. You can save a staggering amount if you book your tickets well before travelling.
But in January train prices will rise by 3.2% (twice the rate of inflation) so if you know what days you need to travel, start buying your tickets now and avoid the price hike.
You can also save by getting yourself a Railcard. These are open to people over 60, students, disabled, families and those in the South East region. They will take a third of your journey if you take the right trains. Take a look at Railcard.co.uk
To save money on tickets always use great sites such as thetrainline.com and Raileasy. It’s particularly handy to use Raileasy because they have a Split Ticket site where you can cut your train costs by buying two or more tickets that cover different parts of your journey. Bonkers, we know, but often if you do that you can get the journey much cheaper then if you had just bought one straight ticket!
  6. Go ice skating
Ice skating is not something that many of us do regularly but December is the perfect month to give it a go. In London alone there are ice skating rinks at the National History Museum, in Hyde Park, the London Eye (‘Eyeskate’ – see what they did there?) and Hampton Court Palace to name but a few.
In Birmingham you can do it at Centenary Square, in Wales you can do it at the Celtic Manor, on Swansea seafront and at the Cardiff Winterwundercoverland. Outdoor skating rinks are all over the country so check online to see where your nearest one is.
Wherever you are there’s likely to be a rink somewhere near you so don’t let the opportunity pass you by. This is definitely one to do before New Year. You never know, you might just be a natural.
  7. Clear out your clutter
It’s easy to let clutter build up over time and before you know it your house is filled with junk you no-longer want (especially after Christmas where people tend to buy you rubbish to add to your collection.)
As you know, we run the national Clear Your Clutter day in March (check out our Clear Your Clutter section here to see more) and we absolutely believe in saving and making money by shifting your junk, selling it, re-using and recycling and even swapping things you don’t need with your friends and neighbours.
Sort out your house and get rid of the things you no-longer want so you can enter the new year with a nice clean house. Don’t throw your things out though – remember, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.
A lot of people sell junk and unwanted presents in January but if you do yours now you will have a better chance of making sensible money. Some of your stuff might make good Christmas presents that others will buy.
youtube
If you’ve got a lot of stuff to sell you could have a car boot sale – for more information read our article on turning your trash into cash with a car boot sale.
If you’ve got a load of old CDs, DVDs and games then you could trade them into a second hand shop or sell them online. There are some great sites to sell your stuff on such as Amazon and eBay.
  8. Catch up with old friends
In the hustle and bustle of everyday life it’s very easy to drift apart from people you are close to and before you know it weeks, months and even years have passed since you last spoke to them.
One big think you should do before new year is to phone an old friend who you’ve lost contact with and find out how they are. Or if you’re a big social media user send them a private message and re-initiate contact that way. What better way is there to enter the new year with an old friend back at your side.
  9. Sort out your CV
If you’re in regular employment then your CV may have been left to accumulate dust but it’s always a good idea to keep things up-to-date.
Obviously you never know what’s around the corner so it’s better to have your CV updated for when you need it. But on a positive note if you keep your CV online (as many do these days) and regularly updated then you might find yourself getting headhunted. Even if you don’t want to leave your current job, it’s a good way to negotiate yourself a pay rise!
A new year and a freshly updated CV should go hand in hand, so read our article on how to write a killer CV.
  10. Start your New Year’s resolutions
No, we’re not making a mistake, we really do think you should start your New Year’s resolutions before the new year actually gets here.
Really it makes more sense to start now, after all starting on January 1st after you’ve stayed up late and likely drunk too much the night before, is probably not the best time to make decisions about life changes.
Plus it will mean you can approach Christmas feeling healthy and fresh rather than letting yourself get all bloated and then punishing yourself for it over the first few months of the new year.
For more information read our five reasons you should start your New Years resolutions,
Or
Vital tips for keeping your 2019 New Years resolutions
11. Start getting your finances in order
Ok, this one is easier said than done, but start making a conscious effort to get your finances in order so that when the new year comes you’ll at least be in a better position than you were the year before.
Do a bit of research, find out if you could get better deals by switching – did you know, for example, that 98.8% of customers can save money by switching their energy provider?
If all you do before the new year gets here is formulate a plan with clear aims (such as saving a certain amount, or thinking of an extra way to make money), you’ll be in a better position than if you do nothing!
Even doing a small thing like subscribing to our newsletter (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) can make a big difference as you’ll have regular money-making and money-saving ideas sent to you each week throughout the year, as well as the best bargains and important financial reminders.
Let us know if you have any other ideas for things you should do before the new year arrives in the comment section below.

Glitches
Paradox Challenge Glitch
After you have Marik resurrect the Winged Dragon of Ra (Battle Mode) you have to go back and have Paradox tell you the location to Pegasus’s Castle, but you have to play a game with him. You have to duel 5 of the gaurdian guys inorder reach him, after you duel the fifth one, DON’T GO THROUGH THE NEXT DOOR! Go back and save and get you LP back up, then go back, you will have to duel the 5 again, but you will get more Deck Capacity and cards doing this. Repeat until you reach your desired level.
