Chaos! In the garden

I've been obsessing about what I'm going to do in my garden this year, so I'm writing it down to try to put some of it out of my brain.

FRONT BED: Despite how excited I am about the raised bed I put in myself in the back, I do think the front bed is higher priority, just because it contributes so much to how the house looks. My tasks for the front bed are: 1. trim up the giant euonymous in front 2. take out anything that stands more than 6" high *other* than that one euonymous 3. re-level the bed so that the drip irrigation actually goes all the way to the end 4. add 2 trellises from floor to flashing for climbing vines to go up, looking at you beaujolais sweet peas 5. move the hydrangea to someplace a lot cooler and wetter (technically this counts as part of number 2 but it's a different kind of taking it out so it gets its own number) 6. plant flowers and grasses and climbing vines and other ornamentals and basically make it pretty a.f. 7. put a couple bushes in around the side and mulch the little inlet on the side of the house so I don't have to mow it anymore 8. if I can, put something down to kill off all the weeds in that bed before I plant in it

2. RAISED BED(s) okay OKAY I am SOOOO excited for this!! So first things first, I REALLY want to build 3 more raised beds in addition to the one I have, but I will not, I will NOT be doing that, I will have a sense of RESTRAINT, I will be SO GOOD, I will only build ONE more raised bed, Okay?? Okay!! 1. twine across the bed so I can do the square-foot gardening method ish 2. build the second raised bed and twine that too 3. asparagus in the back 2 rows of the second raised bed 3. vining things in the extra space of the back rows 4. whatever you like in the other spots 5. try to stick to bush or dwarf tomato varieties only, okay?? 6. Maybe an arch for some of the vines?????

3. THE FENCE RUNNERS: Basically the whole plan here is, I cannot afford to replace my fence, and it has some pretty gnarly holes in it, so I'ma buy a couple cattle panels and slap them against the fence so I can grow vines all over them, and then I'll have my privacy back! 1. One behind the current raised bed, one behind the smaller raised bed I'll build this spring, 2. one arching between them for the vines with a tree underneath 3. my other tree (it's very widdle) getting moved to the other side of the new raised bed 4. sunflowers and okra along the rest of the back fence. (and if I find something else tall, then that, too.) That'll be about... 20 feet? Or so? 5. Another cattle panel on the west side with (maybe, if I can find one of the variety I want,) a passion fruit vine. Either it will successfully winter over, or it won't, and either way I'll have solved my problem for at least another year. (And then the hydrangea tucked into that corner.)

4. HERB BED 1: this is the much less labor-intensive of the two herb beds, on account of it already exists. 1. Remove the current "raised bed" frame, which, let's face it, is falling apart anyway. 2. cardboard down all the grassy areas around it (and fill in the hole where you moved the widdle tree out to put it next to the fence) 3. add dirt on top of the cardboard, plant seedlings all over it, move the rosemary back outside around late-march or so 4. mulch

5. HERB BED 2: FIX THE SLOPE OF THE LAWN: Yeah, THIS is the real pain-in-the-ass of the two herb beds... 1. cardboard the area to prevent weeds 2. dump a shit-ton of woodchips and dirt on top of it, raising the level of the ground until the yard is no longer sloping downward into my house. shovel a berm if necessary :((( 3. add compost and peat moss on top, do NOT overly include the little white things, we don't want this to drain too much 4. plant out seedlings 5. mulch the shit out of it, non-woodchip mulch, pref garden straw, failing that use cedar

6. MAILBOX: this is a small project and can be done at any point this year, so it's definitely the lowest priority of them. I just want to build a couple planters on either side of the mailbox so that the flowers there look deliberate instead of scraggly. Gonna make them about a foot, foot-and-a-half tall, brick sides to match the mailbox casing, trapezoidal overall shape, mortar into place and fill with dirt. Hopefully the daylily comes back this spring and I can move it into the planter. :)

7. THE BACK WALK: Honestly, if I had my druthers, I would just take out the fence between the front and back yards on the east side of the house, or at least move it to the back corner of the house instead of the front corner... but, that would look weird, so instead I have a strange, twelve-foot-wide alley between my back yard and the back of the fence, shady enough it's not great for growing things in, too small to have an entertaining space in, awkward to mow, annoying to maintain. The raised bed currently rotting in Herb Bed 1 was originally back there, and I can see why because that's about the only reasonable use for the space, but it's so far away I KNOW I'd never maintain it... I'm in favor of cardboard-and-mulch'ing this, but anything I plant back there needs to be a perennial, because I KNOW I'm not going to maintain it. Probably more artichokes, a fair number of strawberries, and down the road maybe a couple of fruit bushes? But that's for next year. Maybe some dahlias this year if I pull the trigger and actually get them...

8. WOOD CHIPS: Pretty simple, I need to call around to arborists and try to source a fuckton of free woodchips. I'm going to be cardboarding and mulching about a third of the back yard, if not more, and while anything that touches the house has to be garden straw or cedar, most of it won't be touching the house. I also want to use them as substrate for compost when I re-build the compost bin. Which reminds me....

9. RE-BUILD THE COMPOST BIN: It's not a BIN right now! it's a slump. It's also not successfully getting hot enough to compost. I need to put some structure on it and break down the rest of the stuff already out there, which means more fun-time while I'm renting the chainsaw for the euonymous.

10. PERENNIALS: part of my garden planning is always thinking about what perennials I want to get in this year so that I can have them next year. I want to have: 1. asparagus: I have the two little bits I put in on the back walk last year, if those come up again, but also I'm going to put them in the back (because the get Lorge) of the smaller of the two raised beds this year. (I never thought of putting them into a raised bed, but I've seen it in videos since, and it looks SO pretty!) If I still want more next year, I can add them in the Back Walk, too. 2. strawberries: the only thing on this list I don't know where it's going. :( Maybe the herb bed? Maybe the back walk? I know I want them in an in-ground bed so that they can expand freely with their runners, but that's all I've got so far. 3. artichokes: I have two (technically 3, but I'm not convinced that third guy is going to make it) in the Triangle (don't ask), but I want moooore.... I think a couple in the back walk would be really nice, and I can always stick one or two in the front bed, they make a great bushy ornamental. 4. Daylilies: I put one of these in by the mailbox last year, and I'm desperately hoping it comes up again this year. If so, I'll move it and life it when (if) I do the mailbox remodel. 5. Thyme: I have some out front by the walk, and I'll probably move it out back to the herb garden so that I can put other things out front there. (and also so that the thematic elements stay the same.) 6. Mint: the mint is living in a very small bed, bounded on all sides by concrete, and if it manages to escape that prison I will be seriously impressed. That bed itself does look like ass, and I need to clean it up, but it's such clay-y soil it's a real pain in the ass to work on... maybe I can move some of it out back underneath Herb Bed 2. 7. Sunchokes: IF I do them this year, they're goin in next to the Mint. apparently they're aggressive a.f., and that way I can pit two bad bitches against each other. 8. Passion fruit: I don't know for sure that this is going to winter over, but god if it DID it would be SOOOO good! I've looked it up and there is a variety that can overwinter in zone 7 just fine, but it looks like the fruit isn't as good as the commercially available fruit, so I may just buy one from the supermarket and take a whack at it. The worst that happens is all I get is a vine!
