After Inktober 2024, let's get to Criminal Case Inkember, held by @inkembercriminalcase on Instagram ! This time, we have the choice between 2 characters for each Prompt, which I find amazing because this could develop your creativity even more ! You can even do it with both characters, or even others !

Here is the Prompt List :

RULES ! (I gave it to myself to add more "punch" and "difficulty", just like I did with Inktober, but less rules because it is already centralized into one Fandom) :

No duplicates of characters ! If a character is drawn in a Prompt, I cannot draw this character ever again, even if it's somewhat fitting for the theme (considering the amount of characters in these games, it should not be difficult).

Prompt: Roasted Marshmallows

Pairing: Danica Frost [OC] x Cooper Howard

Fandom: Fallout

Word Count: 896

After a long day of trudging through the desert, the blistering Sonoran sun finally descended towards the horizon, the desert beginning to cool off--though it wouldn’t be long before it fell to freezing, or at least what felt like it. There weren’t any proper nearby ruins to camp in, so anything they’d do would be a little risky. But there were a few bits of debris sticking out of the sand beside where they walked. Deciding for both of them that they’d make camp in that exact spot, Cooper stopped walking, slinging his pack off his shoulder and onto the dry ground. Danica looked over her shoulder, not having realized he’d stopped. Giving him a mildly annoyed look, she walked the short distance back to him.

“You could’ve said we were stopping.” She reminded him, setting her bag down and crouching to rummage through it. He only grunted in reply, dragging the heel of his boot across the ground to mark where he wanted the fire. He examined the debris, somewhat pleased it was wood, even more so that it wasn’t pine. It’d do for tonight. He wrenched what seemed to be table legs out, breaking them into smaller pieces and setting them on the marker. Danica pulled her knife, cutting dry brush to make kindling. He tossed her his lighter, and she made the fire. He sat down with a quiet groan, eager to get off his feet. Danica retrieved a flask from her bag, offering it to Cooper, who took it with a nod.

“You got ‘nymore of them prickly pears?” He asked.

“Yeah, if you don’t want to save ‘em for later.” She tossed the woven bag to him. “Can’t remember the last time my bag’s been this full.” She muttered. They had found a relatively stocked Super-Duper-Mart that day, but it wasn’t safe to stay there. The shelves had things she’d never seen before, but it felt like they’d been watched the entire time they were in there. She started taking things out and placing them between the two. Her box of various Mojave forage, the couple of boxes they picked up on the way to where they were now. They each added a few things out of some twisted nostalgia, like the Cheezy Poofs, or the Sugar Bombs. But Danica had picked up something she’d never seen before: a bag with small white cylinders inside. Cooper looked over to her, curious.

“What’s all that?”

“I dunno. I found them in the store.” She held them up. “Think they’re still good? I mean, they’re sealed.” He looked at them before chuckling.

“Those? They won’t rot, but I dunno if they’re good.”

“What are they?”

“Camp Shmallows. The fuckers who made Sugar Bombs sold ‘em.” He cringed at the brand name. “They’re marshmallows. Used to put ‘em in hot chocolate.” He clenched his jaw at the thought, a bitterness that he tried to bite back.

“Where’d the ‘camp’ come from?” Danica asked, opening the bag and taking one out. She marveled at the slight give to them, the squish.

“Folks used to roast ‘em over fires when they went out campin’.”

“What, like when people lived in houses and lived like us sometimes for fun?” She asked, a glare crossing her features, but it wasn’t towards him. Never was.

“Yeah.” He sneered, understanding her reaction. “C’mere.” He motioned for her, mostly to hand over the bag. He took his knife out and cut a thin stick in half, burning the ends of them to clean them. She moved over to his side, handing him the bag. He took two marshmallows out, spearing them on the sticks, handing one to her. He motioned for her to copy him, holding the marshmallow above the fire. She tentatively followed suit. “I doubt they’d be fit to eat if we didn’t do this, considerin’ how old they are, y’know?” It was a half-joke, stated flatly. But Danica chuckled. Cooper could never tell if she found him funny, or was just…humoring him. He wasn’t sure if he cared, either way. The marshmallows crisped up into that elusive golden brown, and he removed the stick from the heat. He pulled the coating off, eating it. She did the same, her eyes widening slightly.

“This…is really good. A bit too sweet, but good.” She put the stick back over the fire to toast the next layer. She was used to fruit being the ‘sweetest’ she’d have, but this was a lot. “You want me to go back to looking for a radio station?” Danica asked with a smile, pulling the radio she had attached to a leather strap from over her shoulder. He groaned, clenching his jaw.

“If you turn that fuckin’ thing back on and I hear that goddamn fiddle, or any fuckin’ static, I’ll break it.”

“Fine, fine. Fuckin’ fine. Be that way.” She chuckled with a shrug, focusing back on the fire. He relaxed after a moment and looked over to her, seeing how the firelight danced across her skin, over her red hair--but quickly looked away, focusing on his own marshmallow stick. She glanced over to him, and smiled slightly. There weren’t many moments of contentment they were able to claim for themselves, but roasting these sugar cylinders over their fire felt something resembling it. They could get used to this--not that they could afford to.

one of the reasons this bothers me so much is because a main point of the MCU's attraction for me is the puzzle piece aspect. It brings me a lot of delight to see how inter-connected the MCU is and how much of it is based on cause and effect, particularly in Phases 1-3. I have a great time tracing plot, character, and worldbuilding elements through multiple films, and in this particularly instance, CATFA is foundational in a way that most of the other Phase 1 films aren't. So for me, seeing it just thrown out the window without any understanding of the place it plays in the saga is like nails on chalkboard, and it means that the CCverse's divergent worldbuilding raises questions that aren't answered simply by the original divergence.

(like, Natasha's backstory with Melina actually ties back to CATFA -- the Widow family is in Ohio to steal the Hydra-infiltrated SHIELD North Institute's work on the human brain that comes from the Winter Soldier project. CCverse got rid of the Hydra infiltration and the Winter Soldier. CCverse confirms that Natasha has familial relationships with both Melina (2.05) and Alexei (1.09), but they can't come from the same source as they do in canon because those elements no longer exist in that universe. However, they haven't been replaced with anything, and they exist only under extremely specific circumstances in canon.)

my enduring hatred for the Captain Carter universe is partially based on the fact that it's really, really clear that when constructing it no one actually thought about how much of the mainline MCU is based on events that happened in CATFA (or are otherwise connected to elements of CATFA) and would not occur if literally anything in CATFA changed.
