hi i came across ur answer about harry/his music, there was this -- "I also really hate that one song that Zayn did with Usher and Chris Brown, because you have these awful men completely misunderstanding what it means to write a love song, and then you have Zayn at the very end all like “actually I really am in love tho…” I thought the same bcz his verse is so different & feels like it doesn't fit can you explain more about it if you'd like plz? thanks :)

SO I had to re-listen to the song for this ask and it was just as uncomfortable as the first time <3

Alright lets break this down.

I. General Feel

Okay so this song is. It’s just not a good song let me put it like that. It’s an pop R&B song, obviously meant to be at the very least sexy. You have three men that are known for their sexy pop/R&B lyics and/or songs, and somehow two of them forgot how to be sexy? make it make sense. Where is the romance? the ambiance? the vulnerability? No not like that Chris Brown. 

And yes there were three other writers, but that just means there is even less of an excuse for this nonsense. It literally makes my skin crawl.

II. Lyrics

a. Usher, what is you doing? He starts off the verse with

This sounds juvenile. If someone rapped this over a Nitti Beat back in 2012 I would have thought this was fire. That’s how fucking childish this is. This can’t be the same man you used to sing stuff like “if you didn’t know you’re the only thing that’s on my mind, cause the way i’m starin at you makes me wanna give it to you all night” or “I’ve been waiting all day to wrap my hands around your waist and kiss your face” or “I’ll get you hot I know you oh so well”. now are those groundbreaking lyrics? No. But they sound leagues better then whatever the hell he was doing here, Especially in context, especially when he sung them but I wanna talk about that later.

Truly if this was being rapped in a club with the bass all the way up and the melody loud enough that you couldn’t hear it, I would be like “ okay maybe horny people wanna shake they ass” but this is supposed to be sexy? Who is this seducing????? Are they okay? Can they name the current President? How many fingers am I holding up?

Last of his verse is what really gets me heated like

First off, pussy taste like pussy you fucking coward. Second, stop god modding you clearly don’t know all that if you still think pussy taste like pineapples. And this is that immaturity coming back into play I feel like, who is this song for? Not adults. Not like this.  I feel like I can’t over emphasize that this man had been putting out original music for 26 years. 26! Not only are your fans too old for this nonsense, but you should be a master song writer! I know this song came out in 2016 but that’s still over 20 years of experience.

See this is what I was talking about in my other post, He completely misunderstands what it means to white a love song , but more than that, to be vulnerable. Saying you’re a cheating whore and begging for forgiveness in this manner is not actually apologizing for your actions, it’s just airing your dirty laundry. 

If he wants to do that then fine I guess?? But I feel like he wasn't. Like, the idea totally reminds me of Charlene, Wherein Anthony Hamilton name drops his lover and begs her to come back to him. The thing about Hamilton’s song is that he doesn’t sound like a manipulative ass for one. Hamilton makes it clear there were several places he knows he fell short in the relationship, and in the end, he doesn’t make it out to be a callout post, but he does let her know that he intends to wait for her should she come back, and then promises to change his behavior. This is not that at all. When Beyoncé and Alicia Keys said Say you love me and  Put it in a Love Song, This is not what they meant.

Am I Floored? No. Is this his best work? Also no. Is it a helluva lot better than whatever the fuck Usher and Chris B thought they were doing here? Hell yes. The vulnerability! The pleading! The fucked up headspace! This verse has it all!

III. The way the song is sung

terribly Let me start there. Wtf was usher trying to do here. The lyrics were chringy, and so was the delivery. It felt choppy as hell. Like who is fucking to this? Asking for a friend. WHo is aroused by an usher vulva tat 

we need to have words.

second Chis Brown sounds like a whiney piss baby I really hope no one actually paid for that song thinking they were getting a sexy R&B hit and got that.

Zayn sounds fine on this song, like the tone is overall bittersweet, but it matches the lyrics.

okay the last thing I want to talk about is the chorus. after hearing the verses It really doesn’t match. It’s a really basic premise I feel and Usher and CB felt like they were on another song in between the chorus. Like In Sex Room, Ludacris talks a really big game, and the chorus is really simple, but It’s literally all about what he plans to do in said “Sex room”, Usher like someone told him he was gonna be singing a sex song and then went back and put a line that tied to the song at the last minute if that makes sense?

and then CB....okay.

The last thing I wanna say about Chris Brown is I actually listened to the original song, thinking maybe the original was also trash. No actually? It’s not the best, not even by Chris B standards but its not bad like?? Who let him but out this remix monstrosity?

Anyway, I actually have a Sexy R&B playlist if you’re looking for something...better. Don’t get me wrong, they aren’t all romantic, but they’re damn sure sexy, and way better that wtf this song has going on

Holler Magic/Faith Healing Stories from Fellow Appalachians, Pt. 1: Scourifyin’, Stoppin’ a Bleed, Talkin’ the Fire Out, & Curing Thrash

I’m in a group for Appalachian Americans and recently asked other members to share stories of folk magic or folk healing from their own or their families’ experiences. I got a treasure trove of stories, some of which echoed and even built upon some of my own. Some of these you can find in Foxfire books, but it’s so good to get individual spins on the ones I know and hear about new ones! Here are a few:

Scourifying/Scarifying

1. “There were some folks in the community where I grew up who would ‘scourify’ a newborn baby. They took them to an old faith healer and he would take a razor blade, cut a little place on the baby’s shoulder blade, catch a thimbleful of its blood and feed it back to the baby. It was supposed to keep the baby from getting sick.”

2. “I remember my mother taking my younger siblings to an old lady who would use a razor blade and cut a small slit in the baby’s back, just over the spine. A few drops of the blood would be added to the baby’s bottle of formula.”

3. “My mother could do it by putting a small horn on the baby’s baby and drawing a drop of blood out. I still have the little horn. Never heard of giving the blood back.”

Stop a Bleed

* My Mama Jury wrote in her bible that this could be done with Ezekiel 16:5, but I think she meant verse 6, because every story I’ve heard about its use references that particular verse. As I’ve written before, a local woman known way back could stop a bleed by saying this verse. I’ve learned a lot more from people who’ve done it themselves and who have had close relatives who could.

* This ability can only be passed, according to some, from female to male or vice versa. Once the practitioner passes the ritual on, s/he can no longer perform it. From what I’ve heard, this is a closely guarded hereditary practice that seems straightforward but must be passed on from someone who can do it.

Here are some responses I got about this ability:

1. “The verse is passed from a man to woman or vice versa. I remember being little and one of my uncles called for my granny on the CB radio, he was having a nose bleed and it wouldn’t stop. She said that verse real fast, and in a couple of seconds my uncle said it was done bleeding!!”

2. “When I was about 6 or 7 I got my thumb caught in a motor that pumped water in the house. My papaw was working in the field. My uncle put me up in the truck and took me to him. Every time my heart beat I squirted blood. He rubbed and said [the verse] and it stopped bleeding.”

3. “My dad was a ‘free bleeder’ and he told us that a man that was the 7th son of a 7th son laid scissors between his shoulders and read a passage from the Bible and he never bled freely from his nose again. My little brother was born a free bleeder but Dad could never find another blessed 7th of a 7th.”

4. “Know of a lady that had nose bleeding from drug use. Mommy read Ezekiel 16:6 over the phone to her and it DID stop. Another where my nephew cut his ear badly and we read it and it stopped bleeding and healed in just a few days.”

5. “You have to say the verse 3 times.”

Talking the Fire Out

1. “We had a man in our neighborhood who could talk fire out. When I was little, about 2, I fell in a wood stove. They took me to him. I still have 2 little scars on 2 of my fingers.”

2. “My arm was burned. I got it against a wood stove, too. A man said a verse from the Bible and it healed. It wasn’t healing good until he did that. I still have a scar.”

3. “My grandpa could talk the fire out of a burn. He had to pass it on to a female not in his family for it to continue.”

4. “Isiah 43 verse 2 to take away a burn.”

5. “To draw out fire Proverbs 6:27-28. Say to the burn ‘Blow in frost,’ starting at the bottom of the burn and blow to the top. Say ‘Blow out fire’ from the top to the bottom of the burn. Repeat this 3 times. Be sure you have the words right when blowing! If not it will make the burn worse. You have to tell the opposite sex who isn’t kin to you.”

6. “My grandad on dad’s side of the family could take fire out. And my mother, when she was 11, knew a black lady who could do so. She told mama she could not pass the knowledge on to another woman but she could whisper it in a man’s ear. And he would receive the power, and he could pass it along to a woman. She healed a great-aunt that stuck her hand in a pot of boiling water, and she didn’t have to go to the doctor. Her name was Mamie Nowland, and everyone black or white called her Aint Mamie.”

Curing “Thrash”

* When I was a baby, my mamaw took me to a friend of hers named Berth. Berth had never met her daddy, and mamaw had her blow her breath into my mouth 3 times. According to my mama, it cured me and by the next day it was gone.

Here are some other responses:

1. “My grandma would say have an unmarried woman blow in the baby’s mouth 3 times.”

2. “A seventh son of a seventh son can cure thrush. There was a man in my mom’s congregation who could do it, and he cured all 3 of my sons of their thrush.”

3. “Worked on my kids! Seventh daughter of a seventh daughter!”

4. “Worked on me when I was a baby. Guy had never met his father!”

5. “My mom can cure thrush. She’s done it to my oldest son.”

6. “My sister-in-law can cure thrush, it’s almost like she takes it from the baby because she will get thrush for a few days after. She has never met her dad.”

7. “When I was a young girl I could cure the thrush. People would bring their kids for me to blow in their mouth 3 times, don’t look for 3 days and it will be all gone.”

8. “Also my husband cured my daughter’s thrush by blowing in her mouth. He has never met his father.”

9. “My great-uncle is a 7th son and can cure thrush by blowing in a baby’s mouth. Anyone who has these gifts is never to accept payment of any sort!”

10. “My mom would take a baby with the thrash and go to the creek and have the baby drink water from her shoe. The baby’s mouth would be well in 5 minutes.”

11. “My grandma took my sister to a granny woman up in the holler and had my sister drink creek water from her shoe and my sister’s thrash was gone by the next day.”

12. “An old family friend took my sister to the creek and rubbed some kind of leaf in her mouth. She had her drink creek water too, which got rid of her thrush. I don’t remember a shoe being involved, I was little though.”

13. “The man I knew who could cure thrash would ask for their full name and birth date before they were cured.”

14. “My great-grandmother had some people from another county come to her spring and they asked if they could give their baby some water from the spring. But they wanted her to take off one of her shoes and allow the baby to drink from her shoe. My great-grandmother said she could go to the house and get one of her good shies but they said it must be a shoe already worn so she let them and supposedly the cure took.”

15. “I have a brother and a sister that were born after their dads had died, one in the coal mines and the other in an accident with an electric wire that had fallen in a storm, trying to save his buddy. Both were in their twenties. People came from all over to get them to blow in the baby’s mouth. It worked.”

Chapter 21

We were all sitting down next to the river. Our bikes leaned up against some rocks in the parking lot. Guy stared at his phone. The little service indicator in the top right corner remained, but next to it read "No service" . He powered off his phone, and looked up at the river flowing by.

"So what do we do now?" he muttered.

"We wait" Erin responded.

"How much of the grid do you think we took out?" I asked

"No way to tell without service" Erin answered

There were a lot of things connected to the internet which we never thought about. Gas stations, television stations, banks. Everything needed to be online in order to function. All of that was gone now.

"Everyone seems to be behaving pretty well" Guy said, referring to the fact that we could've descended into civil unrest and chaos. On our ride to our spot by the river, we saw the gun shop owners staked out in front of their properties, with their AR15s and trucks parked sideways in front of their strip mall businesses. But nobody was looting, and freaking out. But there was a sense of unease in the air. Everyone could sense it. The internet was a bigger part of everyone's life than they had realized. From checking your instagram likes, to sending an email to work, all of it suddenly vanished, and while some had enjoyed this newfound freedom, as it warranted the best excuse ever in the history of the world, others were starting to freak out. The lines outside the gas station ran for blocks, but were also pointless, as the gas couldn't even be dispensed. The kid working the counter was helpless and when the manager arrived he couldn't do much, including lock the place as it was open 24 hours and had never been closed in years. He made due selling chips and soda to the masses who were panic buying everything in the store. We weren't really that worried because we had all been informed by Siri that we were merely rebooting the computers. The whole point of a reboot is that the computer starts up again, it had to. But what had been put on that USB, and why had we gone along with everything that we were told? What if, while we were gophers, we had just said no. Why did we even need to carry out the mission?

A fisherman pulled into the parking lot in an old Ford F150, late 70s model. He was an old timer, most likely in his mid 60s. He had the look of someone who had seen a lot of sun and Bud Light in his day. He grabbed a folding chair out of the bed of his truck, a cooler, an old tape player, and a couple fishing poles. He got set up in his spot about 20 yards from us, through a couple bobbers into the river, and plopped down into his chair before cracking a Bud Light and placing it into the cup cozy which was built into his collapsible chair. He pressed the play button on the old tape player, it was the size of a walkman but had a speaker on the other side of it. He was playing Johnny Cash. He looked over at us, since he was kind of the main attraction at the moment, and shouted out "What more do ya need?" Guy raised up his hands and shouted back "not much man!" . The old man's rods were stuck in the sand of the river bank with those holder things. He stood up, lit up a cigarette and started walking over towards us. He seemed harmless, but at the same time, with everything we had been through we couldn't help be a bit dubious about everything happening around us. What was real and what wasn't. We hadn't taken any shrooms or anything, but who knows what anyone had up their sleeves.

The old man got within hearing distance and started talking as he approached "You seein this shit?" Guy responded "Pretty crazy isn't it?" The old man spit onto the ground, and gave us a dubious glance. He had a big white beard, glasses, and a beat up hat which read "Schloss' Towing & Service" and a picture of a red towtruck on a white background. "These dumbshits all running around like a chicken with their head cut off" he stated. Erin nodded and gave a simple "Yep" in response. "You'd think their damn world ended because they can't get online and see a picture of a cat using a toilet. The world's still here last I checked isn't it?" he said with a smile and slight chuckle. "Yeah, the internet is pretty important to people isn't it?" I said, trying to bond with the guy as I really liked his approach and his demeanor was soothing amidst all the chaos. "Hell, I think they ought to give however attacked that substation a medal!" the old man continued. "Instead they calling em terrorists" he continued. Erin's eyes widened "Who's calling them terrorists?" The man looked at her with a smile, "The police hon, I heard it on the CB in my truck" "The police lines and short wave are still working. You can come listen if you want to. Lord knows I aint gonna be gettin any bites for hours" I was the first to respond. "I'd love to have a listen if that's cool sir. " The old man bristled at the word, Sir "Hey kid, look, I appreciate you calling me Sir, good for you, you don't see that with a lot of kids these days. But my name's Schloss" he said as he motioned us back to his truck. "Come have a listen" . And we all got up off our rocks, and walked back to his baby blue F150. He cracked the door open and turned the key backwards until the power came on. At first a slight crackling, and then Schloss turned the knob gently while looking right at me, and a voice began to pierce through the speakers. It said "2420 we have a 211 in progress at Rick's Sporting Goods. Respond immediately to Rick's Sporting Goods, located at 211 East Wilshire Ave." Another cop responded "Copy that. En route. Over" The old man shook his head "Bunch of goddam dipshits I tell ya. Can't go a day with internet before they start losing their shit"

Erin then piped up and asked the man "So... what did you hear about this being a terror attack?" Schloss responded "They're sendin in the Feds apparently. Somebody blew up a substation about 17 miles out of town near McKenzie. Whole transformer lit up like a Christmas tree out there! haha! But yeah, they mention DHS, that means they saying it's terrorism. Lord knows they've got cameras all over that place. I'm sure they got a pretty good look at whoever done it."

At that moment a bell began to ring, not from a phone, but an old fashioned bell, it was located at the top of one of Schloss' reels. He rushed over and grabbed the reel and began to pull back as the rod began to arc. "Wooooo! These walleye hit hard! You wanna reel it in kid?" he said, looking back at us. We all sat silent, none of us had ever fished before. "I will!" Erin said as she began to jog towards him. Schloss gave her the rod, and instructed her on how to use it. She got the hang of it quickly, and you could tell she was having a moment she should've had with a father. Her face lit up. "Go on now! Bring er in!" The old man shouted. "Hey you! Stretch!" Schloss said to Guy, "grab my net out of the bed!" Guy brought the net over, and we could see the white of the fish just below the surface, coming closer and closer to the shore. "You're gonna net it stretch!" The old man shouted. The water splashed violently as the fish came closer to shore, and Guy got under it with the net. "Yes!" Erin exclaimed. The old man brought a white 5 gallon pail, filled it with water quickly, and plopped the fish into it. We all looked at the fish in the pail, it's beautiful irrididescent body gleaming in the light. "What else do ya need?" the old man repeated again. "not much" I said. "Not much"

I tried to shake off any feelings of guilt as I pulled up to Derrick’s aunt’s crib. I really fucked with Dre’s head a minute ago. Why was I throwing myself at him like that? When I had a perfectly good nigga waiting for me? “You need to slow yo ho ass down and not fuck this up.” I gave myself a pep talk while looking at my reflection in the rear-view mirror. I shook my head at myself once more before reaching over and picking up the bag filled with Mexican food. It was Tuesday and me and Derrick were feenin’ for tacos.

Tacos and dick? Oh yea, tonight was gonna be lit.

I rang the doorbell and smiled brightly once I was greeted with Sheila, Derrick’s aunt.

“Hi, Auntie Sheila.” I walked into her open arms and kissed her cheek before walking into the home. “How are you, baby? You brought anything for me?” I chuckled as I followed her into the kitchen. Best believe Derrick’s hungry hippo ass was front and center eating what looked to be chicken and rice. “Babe, why would you let me get tacos if you already had food to eat?” I rolled my eyes on the low before turning to Sheila. “I got tacos, Auntie. A whole lot. I guess its just me and you tonight--”

“Whoa whoa whoa whoa! Im still hungry and those tacos are for us. Sorry, auntie.” Derrick quickly jumped up from his seat at the table and rushed over to where Sheila and I stood. We purposely ignored him as we began to tear up the chicken and shrimp tacos. “These shits hittinnnnn!” I dragged as I took big bites from my taco. “Seriously. Gimme two more to take up to my room,” I nodded before separating two tacos for her and sending her on her way. I didn’t want to laugh but Derrick was steaming to the left of me. Serves his greedy ass right.

“That’s so fucked up.”

“What I do?” I faked innocence as I walked over to the fridge. “You like my hair babe? I made them clip the ends a little. It’s giving Selena vibes, aint it?”

“Shit look trash.” I spun around from looking inside the fridge once I heard his flat tone. This boy was not giving me an attitude because of some damn tacos. I refused to believe it.

“Exuuuuuse me? Shit look what?” I cupped my hand behind my ear. Maybe I heard him wrong.

“Shit look trash, mamas. Ima fuck it up tonight though so I don’t even know why you spent bread to get it done.” As if his comments weren’t rude as shit, this nigga then had the audacity to pick up my half eaten taco, and shove that shit in his mouth! “You ain’t fuckin’ shit up, nigga. Fuck outta here.” I grumbled as I walked over to where he stood, with a can of ginger ale in my possession. “Now open this. I don’t wanna break a nail.”

“Open it yaself, big boi.” He went to stuff his hand inside the bag again when I threw the can at his bare chest. The hissing sound he made was music to my ears. “Pick it up and open it, Derrick.”

“Fuck you, Paris.”

The sex was amazing. It was always amazing. Now we were both exiting the shower because tonight was my dad’s showcase for his newly signed artists, Summer Walker and Da Baby. “Wear the black shirt, babe.” I patted his booty as I walked over to the dresser, searching for my deodorant and body lotion.

“Cause you wearing that revealing ass black dress, so you want me to match ya fly?”

My dad had that Summer Walker chick sitting to the left of him, and Da Baby was posted up in the back talking to some chick he came with. They looked very blessed to be here tonight and it made me feel good knowing that my father was really about to change these people’s lives.

“Shawty tryna be ya stepmoms and shit” Derrick spoke into my ear because it was loud as fuck in here. I knew who he was referring to though. Summer kept rubbing my dad’s legs or resting her head on his chest whenever he said something that I doubt was that funny. I knew my dad, and I knew him very well. He was fuckin her on the low but shawty was not good and keeping shit lowkey.

FDL Season Preiew 2019-2020

Let’s blow this Popsicle stand!

Hola amigos! Mike, Av, and I have pieced together a little season previewy thing here much like we did last year where we answer only the most pertinent questions relating to Milan for the upcoming season. Feel free to answer these questions on your own below. Y’all ready? I’m ready. Let’s go.

What was the most important off-season move?

MIKE: I'm hoping by the end of the season the answer to that question will be Bennacer. Biglia, being signed at 32, was always going to be a placeholder for whomever management decided would be the long term replacement at that spot. And just as Biglia was our most important player 2 years ago when he signed, I think Bennacer needs to be our biggest signing and most important player this year. I'm not saying he's the best signing right now, but he sure as hell better be by the end of the year.

AVIA: It's got to be the new coach. The optimist in me thinks/hopes/prays that we will see Milan playing some genuinely good football via GMP. It's been a nightmare to witness season after season of Milan play football without any shape, soul or commitment, not to detract from the times were we have showed flashes of inspiration but we just generally have looked clueless since Dont-Boo-Me-Dorf was installed as coach. I have no idea how much of a hand GMP had in the new acquisitions but the new attacking additions combining with Paq could suddenly have a player like PTek9 firing on all cylinders. GMP, I'm praying, will have us playing direct & attacking football with a squad that knows their roles and stays compact when not in possession....is that too much to ask?

TR: Agreeing with Av, it is without question, Giampaolo. This club came within an inch of the Champions League with the capable, but affable Rino Gattuso. There were a lot of fantastic signings this summer, with Bennacer and Theo expected to make an immediate impact, but it may take some time for the payoff on the youngsters. Giampaolo's presence on the touch though? We've already felt that. I can already tell he might frustrate us with stubbornness, but there's not doubt in my mind that this was the most important change from last year.

What was a mistake that we may end up paying for this summer?

MIKE: The same as my biggest concern for the last 10 years now... that no matter who is running the team, who is managing the team or who plays on the team..... we still have a god damn MISSFIELD. Our entire midfield, save Jack, has been signed over the last 27 months. There's literally no stink left from the previous regime. yet by the end of last year it was still in limbo. It's like a scab that just won't heal. Every summer it heals up and by Christmas, EVERY DAMN CHRISTMAS it's itching and bleeding again.

AVIA: The smart money would be on not shipping Suso but as you know I'm neither smart nor for social norms .....This will no doubt illicit groans but I still think we will kick ourselves for not snapping up Conte. Yeah, he can be a fussy prick with Ladri blood in him but so what? I'm genuinely worried that he will kick start the rebirth of the merda..... blagh! I  think he could even lead the merda to a scudetto.....yeah I said it....come at me! TR: My heart tells me Patrick, whispers it constantly in fact, but my head says retaining Silva. At the beginning of the summer I would have bet a significant amount of my sneaker collection that one of either Samu, Silva, or Suso would have been sold. Well, a few offers and a failed negotiation with Monaco later, we're here, with all three. Suso looks like he can contribute as a trequartista, but the other two haven't thrilled. Samu was never going to fetch much because he's a bad football player by almost every measure, but Silva still has an upside and could've raised some funds. I don't think there was a ton of interest, but absolutely would've cut losses and sold for much less than we bought him for. I'm a little curious to see if he finds footing under Giampaolo but am pretty pessimistic.

Who's someone we didn't offload that actually may work out for us?

MIKE: That's easy. It's our 2 best players, Romagnoli and Donnarumma. Last year we gave up the least amount of goals as a team since we had guys named Nesta and Silva still roaming around back there. That's pretty amazing considering Musacchio was the other CB and our fullbacks were.... meh. These guys are the rock of the team. Without them we are shit. With them there is hope. Luke Skywalker versus the Death Star level hope.

AVIA: Maybe Suso or Hakan but I'm looking at Donna to be honest, This time last year I was accusing him of possibly selling us short once the season started but he went on to be our MVP for long stretches. The kid is World Class caliber with a long future so hopefully arming him with a genuinely solid CB pairing will start making us serious contenders for Europe and IN Europe! He quietly went about his business last year in the hope of moving on from the previous years circus and it worked.

TR: Ah! You were expecting me to say the Kan-Man can pan out and reward his fans man, but I'm gonna go dark horse here and say Conti. He won't displace Calabria but will impress when the latter misses six weeks in February and March with an ankle injury suffered in a Coppa Italia tie. Conti will step in seamlessly leading to admiration from most of us here at FDL, with a few outliers calling for him to start. I think he finds a way to contribute in Giampy's setup, and provides a couple of assists at pivotal moments.

Where will we see most improvement?

MIKE: Hmmmm. That's a tough one. How about that Suso does indeed become the trequartista most of you are hoping he would be?

Nooooooooo.

The surprise for many will be that he sucks at it. He's too slow of foot and of mind, can't connect to the attack. He doesn't occupy the role past November 1st and is sold by January 31st.

AVIA: Our backline.......I'm hoping that Duarte is our new Silva tbh. There is simply no way that we can take ourselves seriously if we aint solid at the back and although we weren't the worst team defensively last season, the loss of Zapata and apparent implosion of Mussachio has me worried for the season going forward so here's to hoping the new guy ain’t just hype! Plus I'm going with the notion that Hernandez > RRod.

TR: Touchline. See Giampaolo above.

Where may we see a decline?

MIKE: My biggest disappointment this year is probably gonna be whoever fills the SS role, especially if we don't sign anyone specifically to do it. Besides Jack, I don't see a single player on the team cut out to fill the spot. Castillejo? No chance. That 96 pound spaghetti noodle couldn't stand up to a stiff breeze. Silva? GTFO. Calhanoglu? Suso? who else are we gonna try up there?

AVIA: I genuinely think we will be better across the board, no, seriously. Yeah I loved Rino but there's only so much you can achieve by threatening your players with broken legs. Although GMP aint the calibre of coach I've been bleating on about wanting to see installed at Milan he is still far better at technical coaching than Rino 7 days of the week. There's also the fact that we have removed the millstone of the Europa league from around our necks so we can finally just concentrate on securing a CL berth. The squad in theory has also gone up level with the new additions so its all good right??

TR: Defense, slightly. I'm not saying the backline falls apart or even really drops in quality. However, Giampaolo's squads have never maintained a great defensive record, often finishing middle of the back to the lower half of the league. His teams play advanced on both sides of the ball and I will take the good with the bad, but expect a slightly higher amount of goals conceded from last year.

What scares you most going into the season?

AVIA: Conte's Inter...We have a new coach with a new formation & several new key players, it's always a danger and could end badly. I'd like to see us take things nice and slowly  towards the X-Mas break and build up a head of steam come the new year.

TR: Snakes.

Besides that, I'm worried we didn't add that quality second striker and Piatek suffers because of it. The fact we spent €120m and Samu has been paired up with Pia in the preseason isn't a great sign. Leāo isn't going to March right in and when he does get nods on the first team, I think it is going to inconsistent. It isn't a shortcoming we can't overcome as we have a lot of goalscoring quality behind these two, but I do worry it may hold us back some.

so i finally pretty much saw star trek beyond and i feel like talking about it just a lil tiny bit

first of all i like...i dont know. i had no interest in it and i wasnt expecting it to be good, so i guess im biased. but then at the same time, i was underwhelmed somehow? like i mean the way people kept talking about how much closer to and inspired by tos it was...i didnt get that feeling at all.

the script was just so......so underwhelming. the villain did not interest me, the black and green glowy dudes who looked like super soldiers from stargate did not interest me. the giant space insect cloud thing was a decent idea but it was ruined by the music stuff. i did not give a flyin pop tart that the enterprise crashed, but i never cared for that current design anyway so i am not qualified to talk about it lol. whatsherface with the black lines on her face had the interesting language quirks, which i thought was cool, we dont get enough of that tbh. the references to tos reminded me overmuch of the stuff they did with enterprise season 4, which in my view was just “here’s 500% more tos references” (and i will really really never understand why so so SO many people say that stuff is some of the best star trek ever filmed but that is a discussion for another day).

didnt find the comedy funny, altho i admit that i am extremely extremely picky about what i find funny so 99% of things wont make me crack a smile (for example when i saw tfa in theaters i was straight faced at literally everything the rest of the audience laughed at). but i mean that thing where spock is explaining something and nobody understands it and then uhura or whoever chimes in “we can do the thing and kick ass” like oh my goodness that sounds like something from a cbs crime show what on EARTH. the stuff at the beginning with the angry aliens was particularly frustrating because of how much potential it had, like jeez when kirk was like “ah yes this weapon fragment is...uh...a treasured symbol of. .. . peace” that was great!!!!!! and then it just devolves into the aliens screaming and kirk making faces!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think the issue here is that these reboot movies have no leg to stand on except the characters, and they dont really have any leg to stand on themselves. and i mean, if you like the characters and enjoy them then i am happy for you. ive done it myself man, i took freakin vlad the space knight who got two lines and died from aldnoah zero and turned him into a favorite character of mine, same with cutler beckett from pirates of the caribbean, so i know that ppl can single out characters who might not be really well developed and enjoy them anyway. theres nothing wrong with that and i aint sayin there is. its just that i cant do that with these characters, not at all. they didnt get three seasons of a show with gene coon writing their interactions, they didnt get movies like wrath of khan that emphasized their bonds. they got named after and vaguely based on the tos characters, thrown into two movies that i personally think are both kind of lousy (i know ‘09 is considered one of the Good Star Trek Films but i am not quite in that camp myself), and then now we have this movie where kirk and spock and mccoy are like kinda getting development now and mccoy says “MY GOD MAN” and “MY GOD SPOCK” and they were out there for three years but we didnt see any of it and stuff. like the guys who wrote this were trying, and i will give them that, but it doesnt work for me because it just...should really never have been done in the first place.

well i guess THAT last opinion is very arguable, im sure even paramount would disagree strongly with me since theyve made some decent cash off these films lol. but its just...after seeing beyond, i think it was too late to try to recreate the bond of tos in these films. not after into darkness in particular. and i mean they are trying SO HARD with the original cast photo and the thing with everyone reading space the final frontier at the end but it just doesnt work for me.

i think its worth adding that im also of the opinion (which i guess is another divisive one) that the best of tos and the best of the tos movies had a certain tone to the dialogue and interactions which is not reflected here (a certain tone that im very very biased about because it involves lots of witty ass dialogue and i absolutely love it). that may be due to how the characters and world differ from tos, but if thats the case, it sort of renders two things moot: a) the attempt to match the tos tone and b) the usage of the tos characters in the first place (tho thats a problem i oughta take up with jj abrams i suppose). it could also stem from the writers’ personal styles, in which case it would just be a matter of my personal opinion preferring other styles to theirs. but either way thats one of the things that is most strongly dissimilar to tos about this movie, whether or not there were any attempts made to match it. the only line i caught that made me get the tos vibe was the thing i mentioned earlier with kirk talking to the angry aliens, and like i said that vibe was lost very quickly.

its a personal thing of course, but after into darkness i just gave up on any sense of obligation i felt for these movies being Part Of Star Trek. and i mean, even WITH that, with the lack of caring and lack of expectation and lack of just plain LIKING that i felt, i found myself underwhelmed. that honestly surprised me because i was expecting to either begrudgingly like it or totally hate it and i was just left saying “oh...thats it? okay”. it wasnt a violent reaction of dislike...more like when i watched tangled for the first time and sat there like “jeez this is what everyone says is one of the best disney movies??? it wasnt BAD but jeez”. so i guess ultimately im kind of praising the movie because it sure didnt hit me like into darkness did!
