In Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) heads home after a long day with Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) to his trailer in Van Nuys. He feeds his dog, he makes dinner, and he sits down to watch television. A new episode of Mannix is airing. Cliff Booth settles in.

Now there’s something strange about that scene. I didn’t notice it the first time I saw it. I didn’t notice it the second time, either. There’s nothing in the frame, the script, or the performance to suggest that it’s unusual. I don’t think anyone else noticed it either. But Cliff Booth is doing something that’s unimaginable today.

It’s Saturday night, and Cliff Booth is watching a new episode of scripted television. 

CBS used to air a lot of new television on Saturdays. Gunsmoke, The Defenders, Gilligan’s Island. In 1969, Green Acres. In 1970, The Mary Tyler Moore Show. In 1971, All in the Family. In 1972, The Bob Newhart Show. In 1973, M*A*S*H. In 1975, The Jeffersons. 

That made CBS unusual, even for the time. ABC and NBC didn’t have scripted Saturdays. ABC preferred game shows, like The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game, and Let’s Make a Deal. NBC preferred to leave most of the time slot to NBC Saturday Night at the Movies. 

After CBS ended their experiment with scripted Saturdays in the 1980s, giving the time slot to CBS Saturday Movie, ABC started airing The Love Boat and Fantasy Island on Saturdays, and NBC Golden Girls. But those ABC and NBC experiments proved short-lived.

The last successful Saturday scripted show was Walker, Texas Ranger, back on CBS. But by the time Walker ended, Saturday evenings were barren. The 2001 primetime lineup: COPS and America’s Most Wanted, NBC Saturday Night Movie, ABC Saturday Night Movie, Big Brother, and Citizen Baines, a nine-episode CBS drama that was canceled six episodes in.

After that, Saturdays were a wasteland of reruns, Saturday night movies, The Amazing Race, and The Wonderful World of Disney. For my entire life, there has been no television worth watching on Saturdays. In 1969, you could settle down to a new episode of Mannix on Saturdays. Today, you have nothing.

What do they air on Saturdays now? ABC: Saturday Evening Football in the fall, NBA Saturday Primetime in the winter, and NBA Playoffs in the spring. CBS: Crimetime Saturday. NBC: Dateline Saturday Mystery. Fox: Fox College Football. The CW: nothing at all.

It’s a part of the 1960s that we didn’t even realize we’d lost.

Forever Knight: The Complete Series will be released on DVD on July 9 via Mill Creek Entertainment. Based on the 1989 made-for-television movie Nick Night, the show ran for three seasons between 1992 and 1996.

Created by Barney Cohen and James D. Parriott, the Canadian vampire crime drama aired in the US on CBS as part of a late-night syndicated package called Crimetime After Primetime.

Geraint Wyn Davies, Catherine Disher, Nigel Bennett, Deborah Duchêne, John Kapelos, Natsuko Ohama, Lisa Ryder, Gary Garmer, Ben Bass, and Blu Mankuma star.

The box set includes all 70 episodes of the series across 12 discs. No special features are included.

Nick Knight is a 13th-century vampire living in modern-day Toronto. In an effort to regain his mortality, Knight has embraced a new crusade: to reverse his vampire state, return to humanity, and redeem his soul. As a police officer, he uses his powers to serve and protect those on whom he once would have preyed.
