This week we have the incredible Pala Mikayla guest posting with advice on how to prep your skin for a photo session. In this detailed breakdown on how to care for your skin you’ll learn to care for your skin a week prior to your scheduled shoot.

Your makeup will only look as great as the skin underneath it does! While your professional makeup artist will definitely have some tricks up her sleeve to fake it til you make it, there are certainly some ways to prep your skin for optimum results before your photo shoot!

  1-THE WEEK BEFORE YOUR SHOOT:

Drink plenty of water. This will hydrate your skin and keep dryness at bay, as well as help fine lines appear more plumped and smooth.

Take your vitamins! – A multivitamin with your breakfast each day is super important for great skin health.

Ensure that you take one with skin-loving essentials such as zinc, folic acid and vitamin C

Skip getting a facial – This week you want to treat your skin with kid gloves, and undergoing any chemical treatments or using too active of a skincare regimen may stimulate the skin to break out or even cause an allergic reaction. Instead…

Use a gentle skin cleanser – Skip the heavily scented, super scrubby or foaming cleansers that are full of harsh chemicals. Exfoliating scrubs a can scratch the skinʼs surface and exacerbate oiliness, and chemical foaming agents like sodium laureth sulfate can strip the skin of essential natural moisture and create flakiness. The drier the skins surface, the more prone your skin will be to break out from dry skin getting trapped in your pores. Get a brow wax – (or have them threaded) A clean, groomed brow will give your artist the best potential to create a gorgeous eye makeup application for you. Just donʼt do it the day of or before your shoot. Makeup will NOT stick to freshly waxed skin, and you donʼt want to create any chance for breakout or texture that will need additional coverage.

Get a spray tan – A faux glow always looks great on camera. Just make sure you opt for a professional that can hand airbrush a soft, subtle natural tint of color for you that wonʼt look too dark or streaky. There are lots of professionals out there that now how to do it just right – do your research!

THE NIGHT BEFORE YOUR SHOOT:

Skip that last glass of champagne – Alcohol wreaks havoc on the skin, even in small doses. It depletes the skin of vital nutrients and and can leave it dehydrated and dull. Drink your water instead!

Get plenty of sleep! – 8 hours is a must! Pop in some earplugs, and put on a sleeping mask if you must! But getting a great nightʼs sleep will ensure that you feel energized for your shoot, and that your skin will glow!

THE DAY OF YOUR SHOOT:

Arrive with a clean face! – Remove all traces of your makeup from the night before, and make sure you moisturize and use your eye cream and lip balm. Chances are your artist will also remove any traces of your skin care when she preps your skin for makeup, but if you arrive with a clean, workable canvas, she will thank you for the timesaver… And so will your photographer!

Trust your artist – Her kit will be full of everything she needs to create your perfect, photographable look. Leave it to your professional to give you the look you desire-after all, with that gorgeous skin of yours, it would have been a piece of cake!

In my early years as a dentist and a father, I used to feel bad around Halloween. But it’s funny how 30 years of fatherhood and the joys of trick-or-treating with my daughters will change your perspective! I’ve come to realize that we can find a happy middle ground and have a fun and healthy halloween.

In fact, it’s during Halloween that I find our children are watching us—how do we react around all this candy? Do they see adults engaging in moderation? Or adults who act powerless in front of candy? This is why you won’t see me participating in dentist buy back programs; I think this just confuses kids, not to mention, gives the candy value that it doesn’t deserve. If I were a kid, I’d be thinking, “hey, if the dentist is willing to pay for this stuff, maybe I should keep it.”

The idea isn’t to be the Halloween grinch, but there are plenty of ways to celebrate Halloween that are healthier, and more ethical, than the mainstream.

Step 1: Dump the Junk and Make These Healthier Halloween Candy Swaps

While searching Amazon for healthy Halloween candy options on Amazon, I was disappointed. It was so hard to find options without artificial colors, corn syrup, and hydrogenated oils!

Not to mention, when I searched Google for “healthy candy swaps” the focus was always on calorie count or grams of fat. When it comes to dental health, don’t let these things be a guide. There are plenty of low-cal, low-fat candies out there that can wreak havoc on teeth.

Whether you’re looking for candy to pass out to trick-or-treaters in the neighborhood to indulge in yourself, this is my roundup of the best candy options for teeth on Amazon. A disclaimer: these are all still candy in every sense of the word, but they’re definitely the lesser evil. Read on to learn why these candies made the cut and others did not.

Whether you pass these out to trick-or-treaters or keep them on hand while trick-or-treating yourself, chewing gum protects the teeth by getting saliva flowing. Saliva is our body’s best protection against cavities—bathe the teeth in saliva and you mitigate the acid hit from all that candy. Xylitol is a sweetener I like for its low glycemic index and cavity protection properties. You can also chew this gum after your candy fix to buffer the pH of the candy and lessen the potential for tooth enamel destruction.

So, why didn’t organic lollipops and fruit-flavored gummies make the list? There’s a very good reason for that…read on!

Step 2: Know the Worst Offenders

By knowing how candy actually affects the teeth, you can help steer your family toward better candy choices.

Worst Halloween Candies for Teeth

Gummy worms: because they’re the most acidic. Acid is bad for your teeth because it wears down the tooth enamel, which protects your teeth. This makes it easier for teeth to become chipped or broken. Enamel also insulates the tooth. Damaged enamel can expose the nerves in your teeth, which are extremely sensitive to changes in temperature of the things you eat and drink.

Chewy or sticky: The stickier the candy, the worse it is. The effects of these sticky candies will linger because they stick around, increasing the chance for a cavity. The same goes for dried fruit, which is just as bad for your teeth because of the stickiness and concentration of sugar. Stick to real fruit, which is far less concentrated in sugar and is packed with fiber and water that keep you full.

Hard candy: That’s because when it comes to how bad a candy is for your teeth, frequency of exposure is more harmful than quantity. If you eat the candy quickly and brush your teeth and it’s over very quickly — as far as your teeth go (not talking about blood glucose systems and the effect on the rest of the body) it’s much better than sucking on a candy all day long, like in the case of a lollipop. Frequency of exposure increases chance of harm to teeth – but if you throw it down the hatch and brush and floss right after, damage to (teeth only) can be minimal. There are lots of organic lollipops without artificial colors that you won’t see me recommending for this reason. Better to be down the hatch quickly!

Best Halloween Candies for Teeth

Anything with nuts: Think Payday bars or Peanut M&M’s. Nuts and nut butters like peanut and almond butter help to break up the stickiness and the fiber and fat in nuts can help satiate. Chocolate and nuts are always better than the fake fruity junk! My favorite “candy bar” which I’ve found to be tastier than my old favorite Payday and extremely low in sugar — around 5 to 6 grams depending on the flavor — are the KIND bars. My favorite flavor is Dark Chocolate Nuts & Sea Salt.

Dark chocolate: Lower in sugar, Raise your kids to appreciate the taste of real dark chocolate, instead of junky milk chocolate! Plus, dark chocolate is a superfood and has properties that may help remineralize teeth.

Step 3: Always Read the Ingredients

While shopping for candy (or any food for that matter), make sure your kids see you read ingredient labels. If they see you do this, I promise they’ll start doing it in adulthood. As parents, I believe one of the most meaningful gifts we give our children is the habits they carry with them into adulthood—and reading the ingredients label is a habit that will add years to their life and life to their years.

Here are some of the most common “must-know” ingredients you’ll see in Halloween candy.

Not Ideal Ingredients

You’ll see these in a lot of organic and natural brands of candy, including ones that made the list above. These ingredients are not ideal, but they’re pretty hard to avoid even in the organic, “healthier” brands of Halloween candy. I recommend avoiding these, but okay to make an exception on Halloween:

Soy lecithin

Industrial seed oils (sunflower oil, canola oil, palm oil)

Sugar, cane sugar

“Always Avoid” Ingredients

These are always bad, in any quantity. Add these to your “never” list and make sure your kids know why.

Corn syrup, which even in moderation is a major cause of heart disease, obesity, cancer, dementia, liver failure, tooth decay and more.

Artificial coloring (including Red 40, Blue 1, Yellow 6, Yellow 5) which are banned in many countries in Europe and may mutate healthy DNA, contain carcinogens, cause brain cancer, and inhibit nerve-cell development, among other concerns. TBHQ, an additive to preserve processed foods, which is linked to ADHD in children and has caused liver enlargement and neurotoxic effects in laboratory animals.

Partially hydrogenated oils, a trans fat that increases risk of heart disease with the double whammy of both raising bad cholesterol and lowering good cholesterol. The American Heart Association suggests limiting trans fats to less than one percent of your total calories.

Step 4: Adopt These 6 Halloween Traditions That Healthy Families Follow

Fill them up with their favorite meal before trick or treating starts. A fatty, filling meal with protein and a slow-burning carbohydrate. If you want to be extra sneaky, make something that’s your child’s favorite so they start off trick-or-treating already feeling satisfied. Also, after a meal, there’s more saliva in the mouth, which will help protect your child’s teeth against the acid attack from the candy.

Bring lots of water with you! Your kids’ teeth are going to be bathed in acid from all that candy, and water helps buffer the acid attack. The best part? Your kids will be thirsty from eating all that candy, and will be relieved you thought to bring water. Here’s a tip if you get trick-or-treaters: Keep mini water bottles on ice in a cooler and pass them out chilled. Try it and I promise you’ll be a favorite house on the block—the chilled water will re energize both kids and parents and keeps everyone going!

Don’t forget the magic of the Great Pumpkin! This is a fabulous tradition that my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed with all three of our daughters. The Great Pumpkin works just like Santa Claus or The Tooth Fairy—let your kids indulge Halloween night, and have them put their leftover candy at the front door. The Great Pumpkin flies through the skies Halloween night and replaces bags of candy with a gift—a new game, clothing, or colored pencil set perhaps. I’ve also heard of this same concept being called “The Switch Witch.” Choose something that works for your family and your kids, and make the tradition your own.

Demonstrate moderation yourself. As a father, this has always been my hardest lesson. My girls were never as likely to do what I would say, as they were to follow my example—especially as they got older. Indulge in some candy, practice good habits, and above all, don’t give candy value it doesn’t deserve—don’t participate in dentist buyback programs or make candy a reward for good behavior. Kids pick up on this and psychologically we don’t want them to see candy as something of value.

Use leftover candy for science experiments: Did you know you can use leftover candy for science? We never did this with our girls, but if we’d known about it, we would have! If you search Google for “leftover Halloween candy science experiments” there are tons of great ideas.

Don’t brush right after: It may be counterintuitive, but you want your kids to drink plenty of water and wait at least 30 to 45 minutes after a candy binge before brushing. The acids in candy temporarily weaken enamel, and brushing right after will irreparably damage that enamel.

It’s Not As Simple as Cavities and Sugar

I want to be very careful not to oversimplify cavities and sugar. The mouth is a complex ecosystem of microorganisms. Eat the wrong foods, and you throw this delicate ecosystem out of whack, making you more prone to bad breath, gut, heart, and brain health disturbances, and yes, more cavities. This is why I like to say, what happens in the mouth, happens in the body; your oral health impacts virtually every other system in the body! There are many more implications to all this sugar than just a hole in the tooth.

Your tooth is a live organ, constantly losing and regaining minerals, like dollars flowing in and out of your bank account. Losing minerals is natural, but when the tooth can’t regain minerals faster than it loses them, you get a cavity, or, to use the bank account analogy, a “deficit” in funds.

Teeth are constantly in a process of either losing minerals or gaining back those minerals, and what you eat determines all of this. Refer to How to Never Get a Cavity: Remineralization 101 to learn more.

Sugar also doesn’t just impact oral health; it impacts overall health too. New research is starting to find that our levels of sugar consumption are making sugar a toxin that could be a driving force behind many diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and breast, endometrial, and colon cancers.

All of that said, I do expect my readers to indulge a little on the holidays. Take this information and make better choices for yourself and your family. And make sure to discuss it with your kids, too!

I hope I’ve shown you that it is possible to enjoy Halloween while at the same time sticking to your values (and without being “that” person in the neighborhood who passes out toothbrushes and apples…I know my daughters are grateful I’m no longer doing that.)

Red Bull Defiance 2017

Experiences of Team Outside Sports and PAK'nSAVE

I was excited to have the opportunity to race Red bull Defiance again with Sia Svensen. We raced together last year and previously tandem on the C2C. It is always a fun couple of days.

"To race locally is also a real privilege."  An opportunity to venture into areas which are otherwise hard to access!" As the event approached and with talk of a highly competitive field, it does make you nervous, but you just have to trust that you and your team mate have done enough to get through and you can only do your best.  So after a bike check with Outside Sports and a body Attack at body works with Kevin, there wasn’t much else I could do, apart from get race gear ready.

Sia arrived on Thursday, which was great, it gave her an opportunity to have a practice at clay bird shooting and have a bit of a rest day before the gruelling event started. Gear checks, and registration, hanging out with all these extremely fit looking athletes, can make sleep hard to get.

Day1

Off on the bus and to the barge to Minaret Station.  It was a cold overcast day, but not windy which was promising for the kayak later in the day. Great to catch up with everyone on the barge crossing, enjoying the unusual start to a race.  Then to the start line and we were off… it was all a little crazy, so many people charging on bikes, hard to keep track of team mates. It is the most stunning ride, which I always enjoy, despite the pain of getting up some of those hills, but we made it.  Then onto the run up rocky hill alternative route, it is great to find so many different ways up a hill, it was hands and feet at some points, but we made it to a point where the volunteers pointed us in the direction of the abseil, and that meant down. So it was with relief and a little inkling of cramp that we descended.  It was great to catch up with Floortje and Hamish at this point waiting for the abseil, as we had spent some time training together over the last few months.  A quick zip down and a run across some farmland to the West Wanaka bridge onto the Matukituki river and out to the lake. The change in activity did set of a little cramp at this point for me especially if some steering was required. But it did improve after a while. We had a few mixed teams ahead on this paddle so it gave something to chase. Although, all teams ahead were close to over shooting the buoy turn around in Glendhu, I guess when you could see Wanaka it was hard to turn off to the right! It seemed a long slow paddle, Ruby Island taking a long time to get to and then Wanaka township itself took a while... running out of steam a little towards the end…next time more liquid food for me! It was great to find we were the first female elite team over the line day1. We just hoped for as much of a buffer as possible for day2! It was 15 minutes between us and second and 20 or so between us and third.  So not much time to spare!  A clean up of gear and a look at the weather revealed southerly gales on tops with snow for the next 24 hours or so to 1400m.  Knowing Mnt Alpha was at least 1640m, I was packing my red bull duffle bag with all sorts of warm gear.  Wondered what shoes to wear in the snow!  E-mails later that evening from Sally confirmed we were in for a cold day on the tops, but that a risk of change of run coarse was a possibility.

Day 2

We woke to snow across the hills and constant rain on the roof. At 5am we were up and about to get down to start line, check kayak and see if there was any quicker way of getting into kayak with Spray skirt ….We tried sliding in, seemed to work, starter hooter went off and Sia and I slide into our kayaks only to find I couldn’t steer, the kayak only wanted to go right! Meanwhile everyone was charging away from us, I straightened for a minute only to turn right again. So off with the spray skirt and move my pack which had jammed against the steering peddles causing it to malfunction. Then we were off trying to catch everyone, knowing we had lost valuable minutes and what’s worse, less potential for getting any drafting help.  We paddled hard and somehow made up a little time, to come in ahead of the other girls and to crawl up the hill to the clay bird shooting.  Sia went first having practiced on the Friday, and then I had a go and managed to hit a clay first shot…was delighted with myself!  I think seeing where the clay was coming from with Sia going first really helped.

Then onto the bikes. It was incredibly wet and muddy from the start and the transition a little frantic….how many clothes to put on!!?  On up the Criffle hill with Floortje and Hamish and Simon and Misha, always fun to be around your friends, although I was told off for chatting at one point!  It seemed like a lot of climbing, but ok, then it benched out only to climb again into the southerly storm, so it was bitterly cold and even biking uphill didn’t warm you up. On with a jacket for me and then further along again Sia needed more clothes as well, so even more layers- leggings and waterproof pants, no point in getting hyperthermia!  A real risk I would have to say.  We helped each other helmet buckles etc as cold hands meant they weren’t working as they should. We had quite a few teams including Collet girls team catch up us at this point. But it was worth the change, I think it was important to keep some warmth, especially with a technical descent ahead.  It was muddy and slippy, and then there was the tall grass with big rocks to cause havoc.  So we took it carefully and made it down in one piece although Sia did have a wee head plant of the edge of the track, but soldiered on. The Cardrona River was in good flow so crossing with bikes for us was tricky, but other boys sports team came to our rescue and helped carry Sia’s bike and help her across.  I was very grateful for this.  We charged through to transition, which was slow I would say due to cold fingers and hands. It was so good to have so much support from the locals at the transitions.  The last leg was altered to an 18km run up towards Alpha and then cutting down avoiding the ridge top travel where the snow was quite thick and the southerly was raging at ridge top.  It still had the main climb up which always seems to be hard going.  Again on stopping to delayer the girls were right on our tails, so we had to keep moving.  It is great to have some close racing to keep us on our toes, quite literally I’d have to say.  On up to the first saddle to a ridge and then on up to get the main ridge to see the Volunteers on the top, wow they were amazing as it was really very cold up there- thanks so much! Steve Hannon in particular on a very exposed cold spot!   Then it was turn right down the ridge line and fence line to the track which leads us down to Waterfall creek.  It was an enjoyable run down with Lake Wanaka looking stunning with snow on the hills and a flat calm lake. I guess you could see the finish line at this point, you could certainly hear it.  But we were still a wee way off.  It was a fun run down hill, down waterfall creek to the lake to follow it around for a further 4 km to the finish line.  

We knew we were getting chased down and thought Julia and Kristy would be fast along the lake front, so we tried to keep the legs turning over at some speed to get us home!  We made it and were delighted to take home the women’s title again this year.  Thanks to Red Bull Defiance for another great event and to all the Volunteers and the locals support, it really helps to get us to the finish line.  Thanks to Sia for pushing so hard and for being a fabulous team mate.  Thanks to Outside Sports for the ongoing support and for keeping my trusty Specialized stead on track and in good health.  Thanks also to PAK'nSAVE, always very supportive.  It was a very tough race made harder by conditions, the cold and the snow just made it even more of an adventure out there.
