Chapter 60 – The Married Life
Riley sat in the school café as her friends came over, Maya rubbing her stomach, Josh looking at her like she hung the moon, Smackle and Farkle talking about some weird experiment that they wanted to try out, and Zay and Sarah making out in the corner. The six of them were talking about some concert they wanted to go to while carrying on their own conversations, but Riley just watched them. Lucas walked towards her and kissed her on her head smiling as he took his seat, it was a rare day off for the both of them but they still had classes. Riley looked at his green eyes and lost herself in them, she was happy and all she really wanted at that moment was to be at home with her husband.
“Riles are you coming with us?” Maya asked her breaking her out of her Lucas induced trance.
“What?”
“The concert, are you guys coming?” Maya asked again.
“Nah, we’re going to spend the night at home,” Lucas said taking Riley’s hand and entwining their fingers together.
“You guys never go out anymore,” Josh said looking at them.
Zay laughed pulling himself away from Sarah, “Those two are like one of those old married couples, all they do is stay at home and watch those crime dramas while talking about the good old days.”
Riley didn’t pay attention to their banter, her friends could think all they want about her relationship with Lucas, but she knew different. Ever since the incident with the professor she realized just how precious her time with Lucas was, before then they barely had time together even though they were newlyweds. Work and school had kept them both so busy it was hard to keep a schedule of dates or anything, they wanted to pay their bills and do well in school. Now they scheduled everything around each other because they know how little time they have around their busy lives.
Around them their friends made fun of their lives but Riley ignored them and packed up her bag so that they could walk home together.
“Where are you going?” Farkle asked as Riley stood up.
“We’re going home,” Lucas answered smiling at her as he pulled her away from the table.
Zay laughed, “See old married couple, someone should tell them that they’re still young and force them to go to a party.”
Riley waited until they got far enough away from their friends before she turned to Lucas, “I don’t care what they say I love that we hang out the way we do.”
“I love it too,” he smiled. “Communication is the best thing, and we do a lot of other things.”
“Yeah things we can’t do with our friends around all the time,” she blushed as they walked through the campus hand in hand.
Their friends’ arguments continued each time the two of them pulled away, even pregnant Maya went out and had fun, but Riley liked the quiet nights at home when Lucas would turn on the music on his phone and dance around the living room with her. Or when they did their homework, her feet on his lap as they concentrated on their work. Even when they came home after a long day and they could just relax together, not having to deal with the outside world even for just a few moments.
The two of them were so wrapped up in each other that night, while they laid on the ground wrapped in each other’s arms that they hadn’t noticed their door was open, Zay standing in the doorway ready to pull them out of their apartment only to stop himself and walk back out at the sight of Lucas kissing Riley his hand on her waist as she giggled.
“Why didn’t you pull them out?” Farkle asked as he walked do the stairs. “They need to have fun like normal young adults.”
“I don’t think they really have a problem,” Zay said. “Maybe they know something we don’t because when I looked inside they were so wrapped up in each other that they hadn’t noticed that the door was open.”
“Maybe they aren’t like an old married couple after all,” Farkle said smiling. “Maybe they have the right idea about where they want to be. I only go out with you guys because I want Isadora to be more comfortable around others. She’s not like she was when we were in high school but I know that she wants to work at it so that she could run her own company in the future.”
“The Smarkle Corporation,” Zay smiled remembering their little banter from when they were in the 9th grade. “That is something good, but maybe Riley and Lucas have a better idea, maybe we should concentrate on our girls for a while instead of going out all the time. Maybe going out isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.”
“You could be right about that, it’s weird but even without saying a word Riley is teaching us about our own lives. I’m thinking about ditching the concert, maybe Isadora and I can hang out instead.”
“You have the right idea there my friend,” Zay said as they walked back to their apartment. “Maybe I can take Sarah out to one of those quiet restaurants and we can talk and eat and laugh all we want.”
The two of them left without making a sound, as Riley looked into her husband’s eyes. The next day their friends came over for Saturday morning brunch, Riley had an early shift at her job and Lucas worked mornings on Saturdays because he helped clean out the stalls in the veterinary school. He usually came home smelling like soap because he would shower before leaving so that the smell wouldn’t settle on his skin. So for Riley Saturdays always smelled like pine scented soap and wood, and she loved it. As they set up the apartment for their brunch the two of them stole glances at one another, Lucas cooked bacon and sausage on an electric grill they got as a wedding gift, as Riley flipped pancakes and made eggs on the stove.
Their friends slowly walked in, their eyes looked like they were full of stars as they all smiled. Riley didn’t know what to say because it was that same look that they were all making fun of the day before. She looked at Lucas who looked just as confused as she was.
“So what’s going on?” Lucas asked as everyone sat down at the table.
“Well,” Zay said smiling at his girlfriend before looking up at Riley and Lucas. “Yesterday Farkle and I decided that we were going to pull you guys out of here by your hair if we had too because we thought that you two really needed to liven yourselves up and not stay at home all of the time. But… When we saw the way you looked at each other we decided that you might have the right idea.”
“What are you guys talking about we didn’t see you last night,” Riley said as she put the last of the food on platters and walked them over to the table.
“Of course not, the two of you were so wrapped up in each other that it would have taken a bulldozer to separate you… but it made me realize that sometimes staying at home can be the best thing in the world. So we all went on dates, just us and our girls’ no one else and I have to say, you guys are the best teachers ever,” Zay smiled.
“So let me get this straight you made fun of us yesterday because we didn’t want to go out and now you realize why?” Lucas said as Zay nodded.
“Zay you do realize that the reason we like spending time at home is because we spend our days around a million other people, we work, and we have school, so when the day is over all we want is to just relax and not have to stand in a room full of people we don’t know and not be able to talk to each other,” Riley said trying to explain their married life.
“And now we know, although we don’t have jobs so we don’t fully understand but one day we will and we would be able to use this moment as the day we learned that just being there for each other was all we needed,” Farkle said smiling at his friends.
“Alright people this kid is hungry so let’s eat,” Maya said as she walked through the door with Josh smiling at his wife.
“She’s been having cravings for Riley’s pancakes all morning so when the smell hit her she started bouncing around,” Josh said trying not to laugh. “Oh Riley here this is for you,” he handed her a small black and white photo when she looked at it she saw her future niece or nephew.
“Oh my god, do you know?” she squealed and they nodded. “What are you having? Tell me I want to know.”
“It’s a boy, we’re having a boy,” Josh smiled as Maya looked up from her pancakes and smiled at them. Riley hugged her friend before hugging her Uncle, she was so happy.
