How much Latin should a Catholic know? For example, should one know Our Father? Hail Mary? The whole rosary? Entire Creeds? None? Would love your opinion/scholarly analysis! Always appreciate you, God bless
I don't think there is a cookie-cutter answer for this. If I had to give a no-nuance answer to the minimum amount of Latin an individual Catholic should know, I'd say "the amount of Latin used in your region's average Novus Ordo Mass."
That being said, I am never going to advocate against learning a language. I think there are a lot of benefits in learning and studying a given text in its original language (or, in the case of the Creeds and the standard prayers, in the language through which the Latin Church Fathers interpreted them).
To use one example: in the United States, the English translation of the Nicene Creed used in the Roman Rite uses the phrase "I believe in one, holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church." But if you look at the original ("original"; bear with me) Latin, there is no "I believe in," but "I believe." (Credo in unum Deum […] Et in unum Dominum […] Et in Spiritum Sanctum […] Et unum, sanctam, catholicam et apostolicam Ecclesiam). This linguistic construction was considered very important to the Latin Fathers; you "believed in," you placed your faith in, the three Persons of the Trinity in a way you didn't "believe in" the Church. You simply believed the Church in what She said about the God who established Her. This is a nuance that is lost in our English translation.
To be quite honest with you, I pray purely in the vernacular. English is the one and only language that I feel comfortable inhabiting enough to speak to God in. (Hopefully someday soon I will add Swedish to that list, but for now I am a living American stereotype). But if you look at the Pater Noster, or the Ave Maria, or the text of the Missale Romanum, you know, you potentially learn to look at these prayers in a new way.
So the short answer, really; you shouldn't feel obligated to know Latin, but learning Latin might help you gain further insight into the prayer life of the Latin Church.

Wheel: Chance or Change
Albertus Magnus summarizes the positions of the different philosophers. In connection with his study of one set of opponents to the theory of chance, he says: "Videtur etiam contra fidem Catholicam esse si ponatur casus et fortuna. And he brings up the question of Divine Providence: God could not foresee if chance played a part in the world, "Ergo videtur haeresis ponere casum et fortunam."102 are robie it ohings ha free holly Albert i vintimate s idea of fate and his wheel figure, perhaps because it seems to retain both the element of chance (or at least change) and divine foreordination:

For the wip ask game (couldn't copy and paste the emojis for some reason)!
What’s a story you’d love to write but haven’t even started yet?
Post any sentence from your wip
Oh dear, a story I'd love to write... I have SO MANY single sentences in my ideas note, it's ridiculous. But one I've been thinking about on and off is for my Credo series: "Et in unam sanctam catholicam ecclesiam" (and in one holy catholic church) My idea was to go a little ironic with it and write something about the Reformation, specifically Luther. Maybe even just from an outside perspective, where they don't even interact with him, but they maybe notice his 95 Theses on the door in Wittenberg, or they happen to be in the audience for his hearing or something. I would just like to explore how Crowley and Aziraphale would react to it all. Maybe the just sit around with a glass of wine and talk about it, although I guess that's not the most riveting narrative, is it.
A sentence from my WIP. I haven't really talked about this publicly, but maybe I should, to get my motivatipn back, since I do want to get this out before the finale. So, a little background first:
I have a S3 WIP that I've been working on and off for almost a year now. It actually starts on Valentine's Day this year (I wanted to start publishing it a looong time ago :P). The title will be Et resurrexit tertia die (and resurrected on the third day). It will follow the lead-up to the Second Coming, from Valentine's Day/Ash Wednesday all the way to Easter. For reasons entirely of his own making, Crowley gets stuck with a human (he could just leave, and they keep trying to make him, but he likes being annoying). Up in Heaven, for reasons completely outside his control, Aziraphale gets stuck having to solve a problem that (oh no!) means he'll have to go back to Earth to solve it. What a tragedy! What an inconvenience! (/s) Meanwhile, the human really just wants to be left alone, Muriel is having a grand old time and Nina and Maggie just try to get some gossip.
It'll be mostly a comedy, but will get rather dark towards the end, which is why I will make it an M rating. So far, I have about 57k written, plus another 40k of notes.
And here's the sentence (or rather paragraph):
“What?” Crowley looked dumbfounded for a moment, then his jaw dropped and his eyes grew larger and rounder than Aziraphale had ever seen them. “No. Nonononono. You're not telling me what I think you're telling me!”
“Well, if you think I'm telling you what I think you think I'm telling you, then yes, I am telling you that.”
Thanks for asking, I love getting to ramble about Et Resurrexit! I only wish I could make myself write as well...
#haemey aenswers#haemey wreytes#good omens#credo series#i'm actually a little nervous about it#since the human will be an OC amd take up a lot of screentime... no idea how people will react to them#so far the two people who have met them liked them which is nice#original premise was: jaded millennia old being vs jaded millennial#and it just evolved from there

APOSTLES CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed (English)
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

EVANGELHO
Domingo 04 de Junho de 2023
℣. O Senhor esteja convosco.
℟. Ele está no meio de nós.
℣. Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo ✠ segundo João
℟. Glória a vós, Senhor.
💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
- Comentário do Dia

Wikipedia
