2022: Hard time balancing work with a well-lived life.
I felt overwhelmed constantly with how much responsibility I have and still trying to maintain our house chores, errands, cooking, exercising, my hobbies, trips and social life. After pandemic period I wanted to get back to “normal” but seems I can’t go back to who I was. The amount of planning and coordination it takes to do anything has been getting to me. I made too many plans, I traveled almost every month of the year (by plane) and a few months multiple times. Normally this would be fun, but going from not traveling at all for a year, to doing so many trips, it messed with the routine I had established. At the beginning of 2022 I had felt that so much time was wasted during the 2-year pandemic that I needed to catch up, but I over did it. So, for 2023 I’ll focus on not doing too much, only the necessary. I already said “No” to a friend inviting me to Arizona in March. That’s a start!
Though overwhelmed with preparations and airport madness, the moment I’m at my destination I forget all about the treacherous journey and have the best time. Memories that stay with me forever, even the bad ones are good lessons learned and make me laugh now. Travel recap:
JANUARY:
Spent a week in Vail working and snowboarding with Kevin.
FEBRUARY:
Kevin took me to Mexico (Holbox and Playa del Carmen) for my 37th birthday.
MARCH:
Birmingham, MI for Luka’s baby shower that my mom and I hosted.
APRIL:
I traveled to Fort Worth, TX to attend a conference where Barr Engineering was one of the sponsors and I attended as the only representative.
JUNE:
Poland road trip with my mom. Drove over 700 miles between Warsaw, Krakow, Auschwitz, Wroclaw, Poznan and Gdansk. Every town was adorable and Auschwitz was heartbreaking but a must see.
JULY:
Taos and Santa Fe, NM for 4th of July.
Birmingham, MI for Demi’s 3rd birthday and meeting new nephew Luka.
AUGUST:
Portugal road trip for our 4 year wedding anniversary.
SEPTEMBER:
Rock climb with Mary at Redmond, OR.
OCTOBER:
Minneapolis, MN for work training where I did an ESG presentation.
Cabo, Mexico for Pearl and Owen’s wedding.
Scottsdale, AZ for Elizabeth and Jeff’s wedding.
NOVEMBER:
Nashville, TN for a conference where I was the only Barr Engineering representative.
Flagstaff, AZ for Thanksgiving with Kevin’s family: his dad, Justin and (very pregnant) Vanessa.
DECEMBER:
Houston for Christmas with the family. We had a flight back to Denver scheduled for Dec 26 on Southwest but after a winter storm a few days prior to the date, SW cancelled almost all of their flights. It was chaos, we couldn’t find a flight back on any airline until 3 days later so we decided last minute to rent a pickup truck and drive 15 hours from Houston to Denver. And so glad we did because SW kept cancelling flights days later and our luggage would probably be lost.
The times I wasn’t traveling but stayed in Denver were memorable:
1. Danny Elfman’s music from the films of Tim Burton
2. Marijuana Mansion tour for my birthday.
3. Denver Derby was back, and I created a gnome themed hat!
4. Hosted adorable girls tea party at Babe’s Tea Room.
5. Had 90s nostalgia with Kate at the F.R.I.E.N.D.S set
6. I hosted Elizabeth’s bachelorette celebration
7. Best of all, our annoying neighbors got two adorable kittens this year and they started hanging out in our front yard a lot. They would come visit us every day that we started buying cat toys, catnip and snacks. After a few months, the cats now hangout inside the house and we consider ourselves co-owners.
We finished big renovations in the house:
The back parlor was completely renovated (floors, roof, ceilings, electrical, walls).
Front porch concrete and posts redone.
New front door.
The outside of the house repainted.
I think we are finally done with house upgrades. 2023 will be the first year of just regular maintenance and no more weekends of long hours at Home Depot.
Baby news!
My brother and Tracey had their healthy baby boy Luka on May 19, 2022.
Kevin’s brother Justin and Vanessa got pregnant with a boy, due in February 2023.
Last but not least WORLD CUP MADNESS. It was a bit strange to have World Cup games in November/December but it brought a lot of fun exciting times even though Netherlands ended up losing against Argentina. The dutch boys fought to the end, 2-2, going to penalty kicks -where they never win on penalties UGH the curse- but the game was rated top 3 most exciting games of the WC. Watched probably 80% of all games, I even took days off from work to just watch games all day, can’t wait for Euro Cup! #futbolislife
We ended the New Years celebrating with Elizabeth and Jeff. And after-party with Dylan and Holly. Too much fun. Grateful for these friendships <3

These dogs are not displaying concerning behaviors in shelter, and the owner surrender profile (where available) is positive. Some dogs with Level 1 determinations may still have potential challenges, but these are challenges that the behavior team believe can be handled by the majority of adopters. The potential challenges could include no young children, prefers to be the only dog, no dog parks, no cats, kennel presence, basic manners, low level fear and mild anxiety. Level 2 Dogs with Level 2 determinations will be suitable for adopters with some previous dog experience. They will have displayed behavior in the shelter (or have owner reported behavior) that requires some training, or is simply not suitable for an adopter with minimal experience. Dogs with a Level 2 determination may have multiple potential challenges and these may be presenting at differing levels of intensity, so careful consideration of the behavior notes will be required for counselling. Potential challenges at Level 2 include no young children, single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity, mouthiness, fear with potential for escalation, impulse control/arousal, anxiety and separation anxiety. Level 3 Dogs with Level 3 determinations will need to go to homes with experienced adopters, and the ACC strongly suggest that the adopter have prior experience with the challenges described and/or an understanding of the challenge and how to manage it safely in a home environment. In many cases, a trainer will be needed to manage and work on the behaviors safely in a home environment. It is likely that every dog with a Level 3 determination will have a behavior modification or training plan available to them from the behavior department that will go home with the adopters and be made available to the New Hope Partners for their fosters and adopters. Some of the challenges seen at Level 3 are also seen at Level 1 and Level 2, but when seen alongside a Level 3 determination can be assumed to be more severe. The potential challenges for Level 3 determinations include adult only home (no children under the age of 13), single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity with potential for redirection, mouthiness with pressure, potential escalation to threatening behavior, impulse control, arousal, anxiety, separation anxiety, bite history (human), bite history (dog) and bite history (other). New Hope Rescue Only Dog is not publicly adoptable. Prospective fosters or adopters need to fill out applications with New Hope Partner Rescues to save this dog.

I hold a wolf by the ears - A Latin phrase that indicates that one is in a dangerous situation, in which both holding on and letting go could be deadly.
Location: Streets of Roswell, NM Date: 2 July, 2060 Time: 1:43 PM @talionalexander
It was characteristically hot in the desert town, and as stifling weather tends to do, the sweltering heat stirred up the passions of all kinds of criminals. Quorra begrudgingly counted herself among them now, although she was no murderer yet… She found her fingers itching more than usual, to add to her collection of many stolen goods and artifacts, the recent drama surrounding the council’s disastrous open forum doing absolutely nothing for her nerves. But successfully lifting something off of an unsuspecting person? Passing unnoticed through the crowd with something in her pocket that wasn’t hers, and wasn’t ever intended to be? Somehow that was immensely calming. She never had shaky hands when she was using them to steal.
The streets of downtown were bustling despite everyone’s clear desire to distance themselves from the pulverizing rays of the sun as much as possible- it seemed everyone had some urgent business to keep, and as she scanned the crowd for potential targets, the Centaurian felt free in a way that only someone removed from society and its obligations could feel. A small smile threatened to curl up the corner of her lip as she spotted a group of men in full suits (clearly they were important somebodies), but she chased it back, pulling her expression into one of careful blankness, one that wouldn’t give away her less than wholesome intentions.
The set of men reminded her of the suite of Jacks in a deck of cards- ornate and somber-faced, but with the air of luxury about them. Surely one of them could spare his wallet, and the irresistible minutiae of his life and identity that were Quorra’s most treasured prizes. She had a number of stolen ID cards tacked to her bedroom wall, and when she was bored she made up stories about their lives. Not always pleasant, of course, but she figured their lives were more likely to be tragic, because that seemed more the state of the world these days. Maybe these guys were rich and happy and successful, but their grim faces suggested otherwise- she saw in them a sort of companionable resistance to the status quo, a desire to shake things up and turn this terrible world on its head. Surely they wouldn’t be offended by a little act of random chaos, right?
She ended up targeting the one she called the Jack of Diamonds- his left arm held tight to his side as if concealing a weapon, or a luxurious secret, but an expression of boredom more than anything else playing over his blur of features. She was confident she could get that little treasure for herself with the right approach… She positioned herself in the vestibule of a store with cool air rushing down over her head and tracked their progress down the street through the window. At the right moment, she exited the shop in a rush and crashed into the Jack’s shoulder hard, knocking his left arm aside and leaving room for her to quickly relieve him of his wallet with her left hand and conceal it in the crook of her arm, under the unseasonably heavy jacket she was wearing that couldn’t possibly have belonged to her based on the size.
“Watch where you’re going, asshole!” she snapped, as if he were the one at fault. He shot her a dangerous glare but said nothing, turning easily back along his predestined path along the sidewalk with the rest of his posse. She quickly made herself scarce, ducking around the very next corner and not stopping to look back until she’d concealed herself in a dark, cool alley. She was surprised to find when she removed her prize that it was a larger billfold, thick with not only money and cards but a small infoscreen. When the light hit it, it opened to a messaging window, and the Jack’s last typed message was a list of names and dates. She didn’t recognize any of them, but they were all distinctly human. She scarcely had time to wonder what they could mean before she was being grabbed from behind. In her shock, she couldn’t even scream before there was a gun being pressed against her spine.
“Alright, ya handsy little brat, walk with me and there’s no reason for anyone to get hurt,” a voice hissed against the back of her ear. The gun made an audible click when cocked, and so although she considered resisting for a moment, she immediately thought better of it as the billfold was plucked out of her hands and returned to its rightful owner’s breast pocket. She had only a moment to panic about her fate before she was being shoved into a truck coated with a fine layer of desert sand- wherever they were going, she could be sure it was out of town.
Whatever these men were going to do with her, she refused to give them the satisfaction of hearing her beg for her life. She didn’t even react as they roughly zipcuffed her hands together in front of her, and shoved her head in a black bag, although it certainly made her heart race. Black bags were one of those iconic marks of a serious criminal- either an agent of the government or otherwise, whose intention was likely to make her disappear. She only regretted she’d let herself be classified as a problem that needed to be taken care of. As they set off to whatever insidious destination they were headed, Quorra relied on her Centaurian brain to map out where they were going- she memorized the turns they made and the approximate distance they travelled down each road, committed distinctive sounds to memory like the wail of a police siren starting up a few blocks away, and the rumble of a high speed train passing by. All things considered, they stopped moving long before she expected them to, but by then she’d come up with a plan. Perhaps a foolish one, but a plan nonetheless.
Hearing the click of the door opening on her side, she steeled her nerves and threw herself bodily into the man between her and the door. They both went crashing out into the dust, and she landed on him solidly before scraping her knees against the dry ground. She didn’t spare a moment to try and free herself, just scrambled to her feet and tried to run. Unfortunately, she didn’t get far. Someone caught her in seconds by the neck of her brother’s jacket and shoved her back to the ground, planting a knee on her back to force her compliance. She grimaced slightly at the pressure but made no other indication of discomfort. She couldn’t appear weak now, after all, if these were to be some of her final moments. As soon as she was pulled to her feet again, one of the men yanked her by her jacket once more and steered her in the direction they wanted her to walk. She mapped out their formation in her head based on their footsteps crunching against the cracked earth, and when she felt the cool shadow of some building overtake them, she made another move to escape. She brought her hands like some swinging axe down on the face of the guy to her right, and her nails seemed to make a connection, slicing something tender.
“Ah! You fucking bitch!” The harsh words were met with a fist that struck her along the jaw and split her lower lip, sending her crashing to the ground. She heard a brief scuffle and the sound of someone grabbing him by the front of his jacket. Judging by the commotion behind her, she thought it was the one who had been holding her.
“Hey! Calm the fuck down, okay? It’s barely a cat scratch, get over it… fucking baby…” Before she could come back from the disorienting blow and try to make another escape, she was being grabbed and pulled off the ground again. They shoved her forward into what seemed more like a house than any official kind of building, and steered her to a room where they planted her in a seat at a wooden table. The bag snapped off her head in an instant, but the room wasn’t terribly bright despite the glaring sun outside. It was also pleasantly cool in the room, although clearly she shouldn’t be so concerned about the climate of the room she was about to die in.
She had a snarky quip on her tongue to throw over her shoulder at her abductors, but it died there when she caught glance of the serious man across the table from her. He was handsome, or would have been if he had an ounce of pleasantness to his features. Still, as she took in the sight of him she suddenly felt offensive sitting there covered in dust and roughed up as she was from her various struggles. This seemed like a man who would not abide any inconvenience, and he made the hair on the back of her neck stand on end although the room wasn’t nearly cold enough to get goosebumps. Still, she felt some other energy peeling off of him- something familiar to herself. Pain? Or anger perhaps? Whatever it was, she was willing to make the calculated risk that they weren’t so different, deep down. He clearly wasn’t human… and so he had probably suffered under the cruel heel of their boot just like so many other extraterrestrials. She kept her face carefully calm, and her voice casual despite the way her heart was making her entire body vibrate with tension.
“So, you make a habit of abducting girls off the street in broad daylight?”

In addition to being infatuated with Latin music, Cal Tjader was a tasty straight-ahead jazz musician and one of the more famous jazz musicians to come from the West Coast. A native of San Francisco, Cal’s group was a frequent denizen of the jazz clubs in the Bay Area, and called one club in particular home. During the club’s relatively long existence, the Blackhawk was the home base of Tjader’s different groups, and in 1957 became the spot where Fantasy decided to make Tjader’s first live record. Enter this track.
The Music
Tune: I’ll Remember April’
Recorded 20 January, 1957 in San Francisco, California
Cal Tjader: Vibraphone
Vince Guaraldi: Piano
Eugene Wright: Bass
Al Torre: Drums
From 1956-57, Tjader led one of his best bands, one that was well-versed in both Latin music and modern jazz. On this album, Cal wanted to show that he and his group could swing as well as they could make Latin music. The band certainly had the pedigree. Vince Guaraldi was described by some as the West Coast version of Red Garland, and Vince constantly challenged the stereotype of West Coast musicians not swinging like the cats out of the Eastern United States. Vince of course went on to greater fame as musical mind behind the Charlie Brown TV specials. Eugene Wright was a solid bass player who had been with Count Basie, Sonny Stitt, and even led his own big band called the Dukes of Swing, all prior to his work with Cal Tjader. The man was no joke. On paper it doesn’t seem like he would fit with a Latin/cool jazz band like Tjader’s, but it worked. At the beginning of 1958, Wright left Tjader’s group and joined Dave Brubeck’s group, where he stayed until 1967. Compared to Guaraldi and Wright, the drummer Al Torre was pretty obscure, and outside Tjader’s band didn’t do much.
Tjader’s cool vibes start the song off, with Guaraldi adding some counterpoint. Tjader often said that Milt Jackson was one of his favorite vibraphone players and an influence on his own playing, and that influence is evident on this track. Cal plays with a quiet fire, simmering along but never coming to a complete boil. His solo is the epitome of tasty, not overplaying, delivering individualistic and interesting lines. Guaraldi’s ensuing solo is another study in the simmer. Cal and Vince trade fours with the drummer and then bring things to a close. All in all, this track and the album as a whole is a great example of the better sounds that came from the West Coast during the 1950’s.
Curiously, although this is a live album (you do hear the band talking to each other here and there on this track and throughout the album), the engineer decided to fade out each tune instead of including the applause. With the virtually nonexistent audience and the almost studio-like acoustics of the club, is this really a live album? Speaking of that club…
The Blackhawk is (not was) my favorite jazz club. No, I’ve never been there. Yes, I missed it by 30 years. But that’s not important. For a good run in the 1950’s and early 60’s, it was arguably the most important jazz club west of the Mississippi River. Opened in 1949 and closed in 1963 on the corner of Turke and Hyde in San Francisco, the Blackhawk was where Dave Brubeck honed his craft, where Billie Holiday and Lester Young played their last West Coast club dates, and numerous jazz groups made sure to appear during their stay on The Coast. Countless albums were recorded in the acoustically-blessed club, including Miles Davis, Shelly Manne (who made a whopping five albums from one of his engagements), Thelonious Monk, and Ahmad Jamal. The club’s more mainstream claim to fame is that it was the site where Johnny Mathis first sang and grabbed people’s attention. The owners famously kept the little club as dark and dank as possible, stating that ” “I’ve worked and slaved to keep this place a sewer.” The cramped quarters didn’t deter people, and in the 1950’s the club put in a special area in the corner of the club for patrons below drinking age, barricaded from everyone else by chicken wire. Truly innovative they were. In the mid-50’s up until the literal end of the club’s run, Cal Tjader was almost headquartered at the Blackhawk and appeared there frequently and for extended engagements. Fantasy recorded hours of material during his many appearances there and devoted quite a few albums completely to this material. I say completely, because Fantasy liked to grab material from different dates and sources and stick them onto an album, and they did this frequently with Tjader’s live material from the club. I’d sure love to hear some of those complete sets…As if these pictures weren’t retro enough for you, dig those parking prices on the far right. 50 cents for 2 hours?! Unbelievable. Based off of the cars and the days mentioned on the marquee, this and the other exterior shot could’ve been taken during Tjader’s 1957 appearance that made up this record. Another piece of trivia. Is the club’s name one word or two? It’s appeared in print, album liner notes, and books both as ‘Black Hawk’ and ‘Blackhawk’. Fantasy has naturally helped confuse things. On this album, Ralph Gleason’s liner notes, as does the album’s title, say ‘Blackhawk’. In 1959, Fantasy released another Tjader album recorded live at the Blackhawk, and the liner notes were pretty contradicting. The title had it spelled one word; the main section of the liner notes, written by a mysterious ‘B. Rose’, had it spelled in two words. Further down, though, in a blurb about the club, it’s back to one word. Confusing yet? Well, in 1961, Fantasy released yet another album recorded at the same spot. Ralph Gleason is back in the writer’s chair, and apparently he was sick and tired of the confusion, too:
The Black Hawk… is two words; Black and Hawk. This has caused a lot of trouble with the Mayor, because the sign outside the club, its advertisements, the table tents and other stationery all give different style. Some say Black Hawk, some say Blackhawk. We are hereby permanentizing (sic) it as Black Hawk, two words.
What a reversal from his own original usage of the one-word spelling. I suppose a lot can happen in four years. This should be the end of the story, right? Nope. In 1996, in a book on Dave Brubeck entitled ‘It’s About Time’, Fred Hall tells about how his usage of ‘Blackhawk’ in his manuscript was hotly contested among historians and writers, one going as far to show him a picture of the old marquee (there was a space and a martini glass between ‘Black’ and ‘Hawk’). He then gives what apparently is the gospel truth:
The conflict was resolved in talking with the club’s original owners. Both John Noga… and Guido Cacianti… laughed, laughed some more, and then said, “It was one word!” How about the sign in front of the club? “Who knows?” said Noga; “It doesn’t make any difference. It’s one word.” And Cacianti commented, “The guy who made the sign goofed. That’s just the way he made it.”
Kind of makes you wonder who the ‘we’ is that Gleason authoritatively throws around. Surely not the original owners. Then again, the owners were close friends and business partners with the Fantasy Records people… . Anyhow, that’s the Blackhawk for you. Bet you didn’t think you’d get a history lesson on semantics, did you?
The Cover
College Jazz Collector Rating: A
Don Draper would approve. It’s simple, but significant. The picture tells you everything you need to know. It’s four men making music, and Cal Tjader must be the guy holding the mallets. It’s aesthetically pleasing, the colors are nice, and in the racially-charged year of 1957, it’s nice to see Eugene Wright standing side by side with the rest of the guys. Seeing Vince Guaraldi, at the end on the left, minus his signature mustache is pretty wild (you can find a picture of him with his famous ‘stache here). The cover itself is in great condition, made with the glossy laminate popular in the 1950’s.
The Back
The late Ralph Gleason was a frequent denizen of Fantasy album’s liner notes, particularly of Tjader’s and Guaraldi’s albums. Bucking tradition, the liner notes for this album are surprisingly complete, including not only the tracks and their timings, but personnel AND a date with the location! I haven’t seen any other Fantasy album with information this complete. That red ‘1961’ stamp indicates that this is a later pressing, but still an original pressing. It’s always cool when an album still has its original inner sleeve and any other original items inside, and this record had both- a sleeve with full-color advertising and a catalog insert. The fact that Fantasy’s entire record catalog fits on a single small piece of paper is telling of how young the record company was in 1961.Looking at the roster and the quantity of albums, you get the impression that Fantasy was Brubeck’s and Tjader’s, and they just let others use the studio.
The Vinyl
An original mono pressing on red translucent plastic, with a late deep groove. Fantasy made deep-groove records up through 1965 and probably later. The lighter hued and lighter in weight red plastic album showed up around 1958; older Fantasy 12-inch records were pressed on thicker, heavier red plastic with a deeper hue. Fantasy albums pressed on colorful plastic tend to sound pretty good, and this album is no exception. It was listed as NM, but about 20 seconds into the first track there’s a quick skip that’s almost unnoticable unless you know what to listen for. It breaks my heart each time, but other than that, the record sounds great. More like a VG+ great. There’s a little bit of surface noise throughout the record, as you can hear in the track above, but then again, it’s vinyl. That’s part of the experience.
The Place of Acquisition
Normally, eBay is a pleasant experience. Other times, it’s disappointing. This time, it was pretty disappointing. I found this record listed for under $15, which was a miracle since this record normally goes for over $20 without shipping. It was listed as New Mint, which I couldn’t believe, and excitedly hit the ‘Buy Now’ option. Two weeks later, as I said above, my heart was wrenched out by that skip. The ocasional crackles added insult to injury. New Mint. Nope. “Why didn’t you return it?” Well, for $12.50, I figured I had it at a bargain. I am a college student after all. I figured I could hold onto it until I found a better copy. Plus, I liked the vintage album catalog insert and original inner sleeve, and the cover is in great condition. When you’re poor, you learn to put up with more. But I’m not a pushover. I sent an album back before. It was a hassle, but it was worth it when I found the same album in better condition at the local record store for a better price.
Wow. A lengthy post, but a fun one. Happy record hunting!

Animals, Cats, and Children: 17724 1 Smiles years 9 months old, 58 lbs at manattaw ace waitingy tor love Young & Gorgeous with an Adorable Pair of Ears Friendly, fun, gentle walks well in a harness, seems housetrained NEUTERED & ready to go home today!! ****TO BE KILLED - 1/30/2018 **** GORGEOUS MAMBO <3 GENTLE, GOOFY, FRIENDLY AND FUN - He's out of time at the Manhattan shelter, waiting for a hero and a home. A volunteer writes: Are you ready to do the Mambo? It's easy when you've got the right partner. This honey-coated hunk is happy to take the lead. All you need is a leash and a whole lotta love! Mambo's a goofy clown who wants to be out living life to the full, and I'll admit he can come across as a bit of a diva in his kennel, jumping on the door and barking up a storm if he thinks there's a chance you're going to walk him. But slip on a leash, offer him some snuggles and show him a toy, and he transforms into the most attentive BFF in a heartbeat. Mambo adores playing with toys of all kinds and carries one in his mouth throughout our stroll, which, combined with a cute winter coat, pushes his adorableness levels off the charts and earns him an admiring chorus of awwws that follows him all the way around the block. He's a big boy and does pull in his enthusiasm to explore, but he walks well in a harness, seems to be house trained, and sits on command like a champ before hopping up and gently holding my paw in his own to nibble a well-deserved reward treat. For such a butch-looking dog he can be surprisingly delicate, and I had to laugh when he wussed out over walking in the snow and pathetically limped along on alternating feet until I stopped to clean the salt (dog paws are very sensitive to this) from between each toe. This fun and friendly gem would make any experienced pet parent proud to walk by his side, and he's already neutered and ready to leave today. Ask to meet Mambo at our Manhattan Care Center, and you could be the lucky adopter who gets to dance home with a star! Date of initial:: 1/6/2018 Summary:: Mambo was relaxed. ENERGY LEVEL:: Mambo's previous owner described him as having a high level of activity. He is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: While Mambo presents to be a challenge in the care center with his in-kennel reactivity towards passing dogs, he remains highly social when interacting with his human caretakers. Mambo is playful, exuberant and actively seeks/solicits attention. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below) Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No young children (under 5) Recommendations comments:: No young children: Due to the level of jumping and mouthing seen at the care center, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Mambo has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Mambo's teeth make contact with skin). On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Mambo was reported to bark at dogs that bark at him. Mambo may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Leash-biting: Mambo is quick to grab the leash in his mouth. We recommend walking him with a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Strength/leash pulling: Mambo is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. * TO FOSTER OR ADOPT * If you would like to adopt a dog on our “To Be Killed” list, and you CAN get to the shelter in person to complete the adoption process *within 48 hours of reserve*, you can reserve the dog online until noon on the day they are scheduled to die.
