Is Amazon Responsible for the Downfall of Normal Retailing, or, Is it Me?

I promised when I did my Blog on products that have disappeared from our shelves over the years because of lack of consumer enthusiasm,  that I would take you down memory lane with companies,  suffering the same fate.  The reasons vary as to why these companies met their demise.  Poor management, lack of consumer demand, technological changes, or even bad product quality plagued these companies, eventually driving them from the landscape.Now, I don't know if you are familiar with all these companies as some of them were regional concerns, but let’s delve in, anyway.  I guess the first companies that I ever noticed leaving my little world were Krug's Bakery and Dugan's Bakery.  You're probably saying that bakeries go out of business all the time.  These two companies were not your typical neighborhood Mom and Pop shops. They were large concerns that had fleets of trucks.  The drivers would knock on your door, carrying a large tray with an assortment of breads, cakes, pies and cookies.  The housewives, (yes, that's what they were called at the time) would pick out what they wanted, and the driver would return a few days later, with new, fresh stuff.  The convenience was fantastic.  Most wives had kids, no outside employment, and certainly no second d car to get to the store.  I used to look forward to the home delivered baked goods, and suddenly one day, one company disappeared, and shortly after, the other one did, too.  Out of business.  Read the full article
