Many people remember the old Japanese monster movies with unsynchronized English voice-overs and guys in monster suits kicking around toy tanks. But to the Japanese, the Godzilla films had serious themes & undertones.⁣⁣

This is the Japanese poster for the first Godzilla movie, released in November, 1954. In the opening scene, the crew of a fishing boat were enjoying a peaceful evening when an explosion and a blinding white flash brought the enjoyment to a quick end. Japanese audiences recognized this as representing a real incident that took place some months prior. 

⁣⁣In February 1954, a fishing boat called Lucky Dragon No. 5 had been having some bad luck, so they decided to head towards the Marshall Islands. Their luck was about to get worse.⁣⁣

Before dawn on March 1, the crew were awakened by a bright flash, followed by vivid sunset colors that lit the whole ocean. They had witnessed Castle Bravo, the 1st US test of a Thermonuclear weapon.⁣⁣

America had warned Japan to keep ships away, and Lucky Dragon was outside of the exclusion zone. But America had miscalculated the strength of the bomb. It was supposed to be 6 megatons, but it ended up being 15, about 1000 times more powerful than the ones dropped on Japan during the war.⁣⁣

Soon fallout like ash began to fall on the boat. The crew, not knowing what it was, cleaned it up by hand and continued to work their nets. By evening they were showing signs of radiation poisoning, and when they arrived back in Japan 13 days later, they were covered in burns and bleeding at the gums. The ship gave off radiation 100 feet away.⁣⁣

Lucky Dragon was 80 miles from the blast. Others fared worse. The USS Curtis was only 23 miles away. 

⁣⁣Fallout spread over the Marshall Islands but the US did not evacuate the citizens for 3 days. By then it was too late.⁣⁣

Japan had 856 ships and 20,000 crewmembers contaminated. Their fishing industry was destroyed. America's initial response was to accuse Lucky Dragon of being a spy ship and to deny any negative effects from the test.

⁣⁣If you like this Godzilla backstory, I'll continue it tomorrow. Regardless, I'll continue it then. I'm a cat and I do what I want.

My RST's have had thousands of various pistol caliber impacts and a wide variety of rifle round impacts from 223/556 and x39 on out to 308 and x54r and every rounds seems to be shrugged off like the last.
