And since today is castle day🏰, here is another fine example. Castle de Almourol. It's sitting on a small islet in the Tagus or Tejo River, the same river that goes through Lisbon. The Tagus is actually the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula. It starts in the Montes Universales🏞️ in mid-eastern Spain, flows 1,007 km, generally west with two main south-westward sections, to empty into the Atlantic Ocean near Lisbon. Almourol castle🏛️ was part of the defensive line controlled by the Knights Templar, and a stronghold used during the Portuguese Reconquista⚔️ (the re-capture of the Iberian Peninsula from the Moors in the Medieval Ages⛓️). When it was conquered in 1129 by forces loyal to the Portuguese nobility, it was known as Almorolan, and placed in the trust of Gualdim Pais, the master of the Knights Templar in Portugal, who subsequently rebuilt the structure, starting in 1171 (from an inscription over the principal gate) and restored during the subsequent reigns.
