Note
If you like art nouveau, you should check the french and belgian movements (no chauvinism) :-) Search for René Lalique, Louis Majorelle, Guimard (Castel Béranger, Hôtel Guimard) ! I got the chance to visit some of those places for my studies and it's otherworldy, even if it's more restrained and rational than in Vienna for instance. Absolutely seducing
Thank you! I'll look it up :)

Fireplace, around 1895, designed by Hector Guimard for the Castel Béranger apartment house (Purchased with the Herry P. Malhenny Fund in memory of Frances P. Malhenny, 2004-87-1)
Best known for his fantastical entrances to Paris subway stations, architect-designer Hector Guimard was a leading proponent of French Art Nouveau. He made the original design for this work as part of his largest and most important architectural project, a block of apartments in Paris known as the Castel Béranger. Guimard designed the exterior decorations and every detail of the apartment interiors, from doorknobs to wallpapers.

From 1898, when the building was completed, it was a resounding success, and with this achievement won the 1st prize for the most beautiful facade in the city of Paris.

Imagine living in a city where this kind of beauty is normal.
I'll never be able to travel, but if I could Paris would be high on my list.

Art Nouveau was the first pan-European style since Neo-classicism. Easily imitated, content free, and highly adaptable, the style was particularly appealing to private patrons uninterested in the politics of national styles that had characterized the various historical revivals of the 19th century.
The signature serpentine, coup de fouet gesture could devolve into spineless dither and filigree, however, and by the end of World War I, everyone agreed that the fin-de-siècle was over. In Europe, the various manifesto modernisms prevailed; Americans contented themselves with Art Deco, or, as Roy Lichtenstein put it, “modernism for the home.”
