I need Cassandra Cain fans who enjoy the current BoP run/Barda's and Cass's dynamic to read Big Barda comics if they haven't already. She's an amazing character on her own right too. Some recs:
Mister Miracle (1971) by Jack Kirby. Issues #1-#18 are the original run by Kirby. It's where Barda was introduced and developed as a character.
Barda by Ngozi Ukazu. Graphic Novel that came out this year about Barda's backstory in Apokolips. Not technically canon (since it's a graphic novel) but follows the canon events. Highly recommended, especially if you want something more recent.
Bonus:
Birds of Prey (1999) #100-#109. Barda's original time with the BoP. Putting it here since I have yet to read it, but it seems like it would be interesting for context purposes.
Mister Miracle (1989). I have also not read this yet but I've seen people recommend it before so I thought I'd mention it.
Mister Miracle (2019). This is the Tom King run. Upfront you have to know that it's essentially an elseworlds and that it butchers the character of Orion and Lightray, which is why most New Gods fans hate this run (even though I personally enjoyed it given the context of it not being canon). That being said I do think that it's an enjoyable book from a Scott and Barda prespective, and since that list is about her I thought I might as well include it. Also the art is great. Please look at the triggers thought.
#big barda#birds of prey#cassandra cain#(she's technically not part of this post but like. this list is aimed at her fans a bit so)#also this was originally only going to inlcude the og MM run and Barda but I got carried away#new gods#mister miracle#fourth world

Batjokes Timeline
This is based in Rebirth/Infinite Frontier but it overlaps with other eras cause yk. Comics. Where possible I tried to put the original comic/arc instead of the Rebirth comic where it was referenced or shown in a flashback, since most of the Rebirth timeline prior to like Year 16-17 is shown via flashbacks or references. Cause again. Comics.
Also this is almost entirely based on info from the Batman Chronology Project I just pulled out the Batjokes bits.

Do Fo4 + NV Companions Play Caravan
Yes, I know Caravan isn't in fallout 4 but I have headcannons as to who plays it. Cause it's got to have travelled with the Caravans.
Fallout New Vegas
Cass - She 100% plays caravan. She was a caravaneer for years. She knows how to play and she's good at it. She also bets high on games of Caravan, both her own and other people's. Likes to place bets on who will win.
Boone - He knows how to play, he just doesn't care about playing He'd rather be on the lookout rather than playing the card game.
Arcade - Again he knows how to play, he's even looked into some strategies for playing. Some of the followers enjoy a good game after dinner. Occasionally he plays, but not very often, it's more of a social event than he's overly comfortable with.
Veronica - She didn't start playing till she started scavenging for the Brotherhood out of Trading Post 188. She gets fiercely competitive about it at times. Could go head-to-head with Cass and have a standing chance.
Raul - He's had years of experience. Probably helped refine some of the rules used across the Mojave. He traveled a lot and has seen many different renditions of Caravan so sometimes gets rules confused. He's always down for a friendly game to while away the nights on the road.
Lily - I can't see her playing caravan. She'd rather tell stories than play a game of caravan on an evening. I have no real justification, but I don't think the folks in Jacobstown really play caravan.
Fallout 4
Piper - She knows how to play, she and her sister play it on an evening when Pipers not writing
Valentine - He doesn't know how to play but would be willing to learn. He knows people that do play, including Ellie who learnt from a travelling merchant
Hancock - He knows how to play, he's very good at it. Preferse the fast-paced games but will play Fahrenheit on occasion
Danse - Doesn't know, doesn't want to know. He's never had anyone be willing to teach him. Though I imagine the Brotherhood has a game of a similar nature.
Deacon - He's one of the best players in the Commonwealth. He claims to be the one who brought Caravan to the east but no one can confirm this info. When downtime arises, he and Desdemona will play a game. She thinks he cheats
X6-88 - Doesn't play. He's never been taught, but if he is taught. He's good at it. Strategy is his thing. He's good at it. He doesn't gloat about it but will challenge Deacon to a game.
Preston - He picked it up from a trader and he and the minutemen play it on an evening. The castle has a room with tables and chairs that are only used for card games. He's challenged Ronnie Shaw on more than one occasion and had his ass whipped
Curie - She's curious about the game and will watch people play it. She can't get her head around the rules
Cait - Doesn't care enough to play. Would rather train than play such a slow-paced game.
Codsworth - has a hard time playing due to being a Mister Handy but he understands it. He referees games in Sanctuary
Strong - Doesn't care. It doesn't help him find the Milk of Human Kindness
MacCready - He's played a few games. He doesn't bet very high, not one to take unnecessary risks. He's good at it. Learnt to play in Goodneighbor. Plays against Daisy on slow nights.
Longfellow - A passing stranger to Far Harbour taught him how to play, ain't many people in town who want to play. He doesn't get a chance to play very often. But when he does he's good.
Gage - Two of the Traders in NukaWorld were playing and he forced them to teach him. He knows how to play but he's a sore looser. No one in Nuka World wants to play against him.

I saw your post about Tim and Jason and I’ve never agreed about something more. We need more fics where them getting closer is at least canon adjacent instead of the stuff we get in fanon. A lot of their fanon content really grosses me out because it sort of reads like Tim developing Stockholm syndrome for Jason who repeatedly abuses him but can’t be blamed for it because of “pit madness” 🤢. That might just be because of my personal experiences but it really grosses me out a lot of the time
YEAH NO I 100% AGREE. I think portraying Tim as automatically forgiving Jason for the awful things he does(TO TIM) and ohh Jason wants to hurt him but its not his faulltt. Is so fucking UEGH. I think its not only a disservice to both of their characters but a really weird dynamic to tag as “fluff” and “hurt/comfort”.
I especially dislike the Titan’s Tower stories not just because they misrepresent the actual scene(which is very ridiculous imo) but because having Jason beat the shit out of Tim and then WRITE ON THE WALLS WITH HIS BLOOD and then being like ohh no he’s his care taker now is so 😨. Like imagine someone beating you so bad THEY CAN WRITE WITH YOUR BLOOD and then them kidnapping you and “taking care of you” thats so fucked…
I think the fandom in general can turn Tim into a bit of a punching bag which… fair. Im not going to pretend like i dont like angst BUT when portraying these traumatic events or his interactions with the people around him they kinda make him… spineless? Which IS a valid trauma response but its not Tim. Tim can be literally on the verge of death and he’ll still probably be shit talking you y’know? He can be self sacrificing yeah but… come on.
IDK. Jason pre reboot is kinda not a great person and i think the fandom WANTS him to be and they want to twist it into “pit madness”(which isnt a long lasting thing) or “he protects women and kids”(does he?) when it just… isn’t true?
Fanon Jason as a whole is just kinda an OC with bits of current Jason mixed into him, he doesn’t exist outside the fandom. This is why i sometimes joke about being a “jason todd hater” when i dont really have much against the character(other than most his comics being shit 😔) but because i dislike some aspects of the fandom he represents.
I do think Tim and Jason have the POTENTIAL to get along. They’re both snarky bastards and that dynamic is fun to write and mess around with but there is A LOT of baggage to unpack. Titans tower stuff aside Tim broke Jason out of prison which resulted in Jason donning a batman suit and killing a bunch if people which Tim feels EXTREME guilt for. So even if pre reboot jason wants something to do with Tim(which i think he does as he continually reaches out to him) there is a lot they would need to work on. Which i admit would be interesting to read but sadly a lot of fics dont really follow the comics that well.
Anyhow closing this off i also want to mention again how the fandom prioritizes Tim’s largely fanon(or lobdell written so shouldnt be acknowledged ) relationship with jason over his long lasting canonical relationships with female characters( Cass and Helena[HELENA IS SUCH A VICTIM OF THIS OH MY GOD AND FANON JASON STEALS SO MANY OF HER TRAITS AN-]) 😔
But yeah fanon jason and tim is weird and i’d be interested to see an actual brotherhood develop between the two but i think it would take a lot of work from the both of them(which DC will definitely not put in 😔)
#thank you for the ask btw i have a lot of thoughts on this#I think the titans tower type fic could work if the author actually wrote it as a horror story but pretending its fluff is crazy#fandom critical#jason todd#tim drake#spork says stuff#dc#batfam#sorry if theres any typos <\\3#this is also super rambling so

Just curious (heh), have you thought about letting Vidcund have an alien baby too? Since it was a scripted thing (and it could add a bit of drama from Cass, since Bella's abduction went a bit awry). Or you're leaving it up to random chance via the telescope?
(You can answer this to my DMs, if you don't wanna spoil anything for other readers)
I don't really follow scripted events, since I like to stir some chaos and see what the Sims actually want to do (tho I don't play 100% wants based, of course, I'm not a masochist). So far Vidcund has not been interested in even touching a telescope, so I just don't force him to do it. I honestly like the idea of each brother having his own "field" of science they focus on and in Vidcund's case in my game it seems to be robotics. I think it fits nicely to his rivalry with Loki as well.
Another thing is the aliens are slowly overtaking the genetic pool both in and out of Strangetown right now. I'm not necessarily against them being all over the place, but I want to still try preserving some diversity before every family tree turns green.

The leaders of sporting bodies should collectively come together and ban transgender athletes from competing in top-level female sports events, the British government’s culture secretary urged this week.
UK Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer has argued that biologically male transgender athletes have an “indisputable edge” over their female counterparts and therefore, sports organisations should ban transgender participation.
“This week I called together representatives from key sporting organisations, like the England and Wales Cricket Board and Football Association, to encourage them to follow the lead of other sports in not allowing trans athletes to compete against women at the elite level,” Frazer wrote in the Daily Mail. She criticised sports leaders for failing to implement government guidance mandating them to consider fairness and safety in such judgements.
“Sporting bodies have a duty to women competing in sport to set out clear guidance and take an unambiguous position,” the culture secretary argued.
“In competitive sport, biology matters. And where male strength, size and body shape gives athletes an indisputable edge, this should not be ignored. By protecting the female category, they can keep women’s competitive sport safe and fair and encourage the young girls who dream of one day being elite sportswomen.”
Frazer argued that sports bodies could implement an “open” category for transgender athletes, so that the “female” category could be exclusively for women, thereby ensuring that “everyone can take part and nobody experiences an unfair advantage.”
Last month, a survey from the BBC found that over 100 top British sportswomen were not in favour of completing against transgender athletes, yet they were too afraid to speak out publicly for fear of being labelled as prejudiced, with others expressing fear of losing their job if they challenged transgender ideology.
Demonstrating the taboo around the subject, the BBC reported that its survey was sent out to 615 athletes in 28 sports, yet just 143 responded to the study.
The comments from Frazer came after the publication of the long-awaited Cass report, which found that so-called transgender medicine was built on “shaky ground” and that there was a lack of evidence to justify placing children on life-altering puberty-blocking drugs and hormones.
Frazer said: “Among the many lessons of the Cass Review, it has shown us that inaction and a failure to confront the issues at stake cannot be an option,” adding that the issue of protecting female sports is becoming “more pressing with each passing week. ”
The culture secretary pointed to cycling and running, both of which have barred transgender athletes from taking part in female competitions, as instances of “positive progress” on the issue, but said that there needs to be a culture-wide agreement on the matter.
“We must get back to giving women a level playing field to compete. We need to give women a sporting chance,” she said.

Bruce Wayne: Murderer/Fugitive.
Well, THAT was certainly an event. It’s odd. Part of it felt like it was dragging in places, but there was also a bunch of standout issues.
What worked for me? It rustled up a bunch of tensions inside the Bat family. It’s the first event since No Man’s Land that has Cass as a central part of the inner circle. It also spent some time balancing inner and outer circle concerns and concealing identities (though this wasn’t 100% effective - there were a couple of occasions you could completely read the situation as ‘Dinah knows’). People talked to each other (big proponent of this!).
We had some interesting team ups (Dick and Cass staging the break in together was the best of these; they were showing off very different detective skills of which both were needed).
It was also a MESSY event. It sort of slopped all over most of 2002, but there were essential parts that weren’t in listed books (why is Batman #604 not listed as part of the event? The final page is Bruce having his realisation “I am Bruce Wayne”!) and listed books that spent half the story continuing their own plot lines. (Also I didn’t care about the contaminated drugs storyline sorry)
Sasha Bordeaux’s sections were good but completely divorced from anything else happening. ‘Tec #775 was very necessary, though I’m going to chalk parts of it up to “Bruce is very good at lying/performing emotions in final moments” rather than his actual emotions.
Overall standout was Gotham Knights #26, due to it being the reactions of all those in the know about “did Bruce do it?”. Robin #99’s follow up was not quite as good but solid, as well as being hilarious in that anyone felt J. Devlin Davenport needed serious investigation as the culprit.
I also really loved Batgirl #29 and the crime reenactment. Just really clever, with specific payoffs once you know the solution to the mystery.
Batman #600 was also extremely cathartic as we all needed to yell at Bruce for being an idiot for the past, oh, year of comics since Officer Down. He’d totally been letting the rest of the family carry the burden since then and sulking on his own (Three events in a ROW where the investigation has been a Babs-Dick co-led investigation, Bruce. It’s like you’re not essential around here).
This was definitely an event that rewarded knowing all the idiots (affectionate) involved well. I would not recommend this as a starter storyline; while you get a lot of characterisation time about how various people feel about Bruce, it’s also got a lot of wider universe moving parts AND is hard to follow clearly (even in trades, from what I’ve read).
Also the three way Cain v Deadshot v Batman fight scene was epic in all the best ways for three highly trained men who have overlapping skillsets and EXTREMELY different priorities.
I do love the payoff that the only reason all this went down like it did was because the worst possible person was hired to do the frame job, and so the whole plot was the collision of two VERY different sets of priorities. Change one aspect (the original goal; who was hired; Bruce being the target) and it would have fallen out SO differently.
(Also I could write an epic about how Cass and David Cain’s communication and expression of love/family to each other is physical violence, but ah, I’m just going to happily sigh over ANOTHER scene where Cass just destroys her father and he lies there in defeat proud of her. It fucks me up inside every time)
#dc#z canon read throughs#David Cain is just such a good Batman villain#I enjoy him far too much as I completely buy him as ‘the shadow of what Bad Bruce could be’#any GOOD David Cain plot turns into a discussion of parenthood and expectations of your children#less Bane more Cain!#bruce wayne: murderer/fugitive

Why is Assange a limited hangout/controlled opposition? Here are a few reasons:
"- Assange denies 9/11 truth: "I'm constantly annoyed that people are distracted by false conspiracies such as 9/11, when all around we provide evidence of real conspiracies, for war or mass financial fraud."
- He is linked with Cass Sunstein and Alan Dershowitz. Two confirmed globalist elite's.
- He never impugns Israel’s criminal record even though it is long and has surely been distributed to parties who feel great enmity towards the Jewish state.
- He never censures the Rothschilds or the global banking system.
- The Pizzagate psyop originated from WikiLeaks.
- He is a (((MSM))) darling!
WikiLeaks serves the pernicious establishment as a limited hangout/cointelpro to distract, disorientate and deflect attention away from the history shaping events and protected individuals. It is the Hegelian dialectic strategy and contrived Tavistock cybernetics, deployed against the people in order to convince them that the illusion is real. The gullible public perceive WikiLeaks as a noble force of justice and truth but it is in actual fact a honey trap and a psyop to achieve the aforementioned.
WikiLeaks has a 100% accurate track record because it is the mechanism used to dispense inert truth and that which the establishment asserts can pose as no threat to its control. These 'leaks' have the appearance of being significant and ground breaking but never actually result in any substantial change, no big arrests, no illegal wars thwarted, no revolutions ignited, no change to the global system of usury and elitism! Can it really be believed that if Assange and WikiLeaks posed such a significant threat to the status quo that they wouldn't have been dealt with swiftly and permanently long ago, likely even before they became a household name and a constantly promoted news topic?
Most people have never heard of Cass Sunstein and his relationship to Obama and the US establishment, but he was instrumental in the formation of WikiLeaks. Alan Dershowitz is another high profile globalist and has had significant involvement with the US Gov and global oligarchy but he has also represented Assange and WikiLeaks as legal counsel on more than one occasion.
When Assange was ‘evicted’, take note of the '33' on the two pillars (Jachin & Boaz) on the arch to the entrance of the embassy. This is a Masonic signature and statement of involvement.
The book he was holding, ‘Gore Vidal: History of The National Security State & Vidal on America’ was perfectly positioned and framed for the watchful (((press))). To think the police allowed him to remain holding this as he was cuffed is ridiculous. They would have never permitted him to carry this out with him unless in was part of the staged narrative. The author, Gore Vidal was an American writer and political agitator and stood for many of the things that WL and Assange 'claim' to. But as we know, Assange is part of the propaganda apparatus that advances the MIC and surveillance state. Vidal also wrote a novel in 1964 called 'Julian' about a Roman Emperor who stood against the Church in favour of a Jewish resurgence and wished to rebuild the Temple!
The shot of him in the paddy wagon winking and giving the thumbs up was also a blatant show of arrogance, symbolising that it's all one big game and the people have been utterly fooled. He showed no signs of distress or behaviour reflecting what he’d just been through.
It is also highly unlikely that he even spent one night at the embassy. If he is an Intel asset as I contend, then it wouldn’t have been necessary for him to be there permanently. They merely brought him out on the balcony etc. for press appearances and staged the occasional meeting, otherwise he was likely staying at an undisclosed location in comfort. It is worth noting that all embassies in London are connected via a subterranean tunnel network that was installed pre WW2, so squirrelling assets around without detection is achievable.
Another absurdity to this ‘world stage panto’ is all the celebrity visits he received such as Pamela Anderson, Lady GaGa, Vivienne Westwood, Eric Cantona, Eric Schmidt (Google), Nigel Farage, Noam Chomsky, Jesse Jackson, Michael Moore

Preboot when Bruce screwed up even if he didn’t face consequences it was still clear that he was at fault and in the wrong. Post-New 52 the writing and the narrative jump through hoops to excuse his actions and absolve him of blame. Everything from forcing Dick to go undercover for Spyral, not arranging for a way to extract Dick in the case of Bruce’s own inaccessibility, taking Jason back to the sight of his own death with the express purpose of triggering him, completely mishandling Dick’s amnesia in the worst way possible, hitting Tim, abandoning Gotham during the Bane story, etc etc etc And the narrative doesn’t hold him accountable for any of it! Everything Bruce does these days we are supposed to see as justified or reasonable or understandable, but it’s just not! It results in a disconnect on my part as the reader and then I need to go track down instances of Preboot Bruce getting rightfully yelled at for being an ass, because those just don’t happen anymore
Yeaaah. I have not read most of those reboot events yet (though I've heard about them), but already I can see the pattern.
And it's not 100%--like, based on that Batman & Robin issue with Jason, I'm pretty sure we are supposed to see Bruce as awful and in the wrong for taking Jason back to Ethiopia with false promises. Or, e.g., in preboot, Bruce was rarely ever held accountable for treating Steph like shit and usually the narrative tried to hold him up as right.
Still, it feels like there used to be much more willingness to at least admit Bruce was wrong. New Teen Titans and Nightwing could honestly show the ways he'd hurt Dick without absolving him. Robin could have Tim get mad at him, and have the narrative fully support Tim in doing so. Batgirl v1 had Babs and Bruce constantly calling each other out about their expectations for and treatment of Cass, and Oracle!Babs in general had no hesitation in yelling at Bruce. And once we hit Batgirl v3, we even finally got to have the story be on Steph's side as she argued against him.
...on the other hand, I gotta remind myself to not totally fall into a good old days nostalgia, because even back then, comics would never finish following the thread.
Bruce could do something wrong, and be treated as wrong, and have us sympathize with the kids and against him. But comics were never actually going to call him abusive, or even let Bruce himself really understand his behavior (let alone change). In-universe, the kids always eventually have to accept he's never going to change, and it's unfairly their responsibility to forgive without exception if they don't want to lose him. And in a way, the readers have to do the same, because we will eventually return to Bruce being the hero, no matter what he's just done.

MY TOUGHTS ON THE END OF RED HOOD BY CHIP ZDARSKY.
Dishonour! Dishonour on you, dishonour on your cow!
Well Jason Nation, it happened again, fanon wins over canon. The amount of bullshit that DC made Zdarsky write in this issue is insane, I have never seen this many fanfiction tropes shoved in a single issue in my life.
This book has been a constant insult to Jason’s character and his Red Hood “persona” since the very first issue but I never thought it would end this badly. It’s incredibly sad.
I will go ahead and say it, this tumblr and this post is not “Batfamily” friendly and it definitely isn’t fanon friendly when it comes to Jason Todd.
Fanon is destroying canon for Jason Todd. I am sorry but that’s how I see it, fanon doesn’t belong in canon, I would never get tired of saying that. But here is the thing, DC latches on to Jason’s fanon version because it fits their narrative of “the Batman is all that is right and all must follow his rules or they shall disappear”.
DC has been dying to make Jason bland and flavourless just like Batman. And now here it finally is.
Let’s be honest the story in this book, the new drug, Cheer, Tyler and his mom, none of that shaped this story, none of those things were the support beams for it. It was all about this never ending “daddy issues” thing that DC pretends is going on between Jason and Bruce.
It was all about those two fighting because they “think differently” so in the end they can push Jason towards the “no killing rule” being also the Red Hood’s modus operandi.
Its utter bullshit.
From the moment that Jason had to put a bat suit on I knew that this was going to be a mess. Luckily like I predicted they didn’t make a big deal out of him wearing it but the “Jason admires Batman” feeling was very present in the issue.
I will not talk about how easy it was for that one thug to land a punch on Jason while he was distracted and I will also not talk about Jason being a dumbass for not securing his dumb mask better when he knew the fight will involve gases. I will not talk about it.
Anyway, let’s talk about the Cheer Gas induced illusion, shall we?
In Jason’s illusion he finds Bruce at the manor looking at the picture of Joker’s death (?) and even though that is strange what Bruce says next is even weirder, he says this: “I did it. He was the last one, but I did it…Joker is dead. I am done.”
Now what the hell was that? This is Jason’s illusion, and by the looks of it in his illusion Bruce has killed every baddie in Gotham and left the Joker for last? Am I reading that right? Is this this a joke?
I understand that this is an illusion so the gas is making “real” things that Jason probably doesn’t know he wants, like wanting Bruce to go on a killing spree, which Jason never wanted because he said it himself, do you guys remember the iconic “I’m not talking about killing Cobblepot and Scarecrow or Clayface. Not Riddler or Dent…I’m talking about HIM. Just him.” Because I remember and it’s so important to Jason’s character, Jason never wanted Bruce to go on a killing spree, he wanted Bruce to kill the clown who had killed him when he was only fifteen. Is that so hard to remember DC?
And then it gets worse! Since WHEN has Jason wanted a perfect family life with the people that he has tried to kill, harm or looked down to? Why is “being with a bunch of people who NEVER get together for anything other than “help” the Bat in a fight against a fucking clown” the idea of happiness to Jason? Has this man ever interacted with any of these people in a positive way without the intrusion of a Batman/Robin event in the way? I will give you the answer, it’s no, the answer is no.
Jason Todd doesn’t care for your “Batfamily” bullshit DC, why would it matter to him? Because he was Robin? He was killed by the Joker when he was Robin, and he was killed because the man in charge of him didn’t pay enough attention! Jason Todd who was written as Dick Grayson’s number one hater for so long (and fandom loves that) is now having an illusion where he enjoys happy times with him along the others? Cass and Stephanie? What? Am I missing something, is this actually AO3, is this fanfiction?
I think Zdarsky got confused, this illusion is what would happen if Jason were dosed with fear gas. That must be it, I solved it everyone! Zdarsky just got confused by his own writing!
I wish.
Let’s go back to the sad reality, Jason has a moment in which he actually puts all his training in motion and shakes of the gas’s grasp on him. He does that but he is grabbed by so many people (who are this people?) and he is unarmed and I believe that’s the only reason why Cheer is still alive after saying that he has someone in Tyler’s mom’s hospital room ready to kill her if he doesn’t join him.
(If this were the real Jason, Cheer would have dropped dead instantly.)
But this is not the real Jason and this is not a *real* comic, it’s fanfiction! So just like that time in Batman #100 when Dick was fighting alone as Nightwing (for the first time since his “family” left him alone after losing his memories) the rest of the “family” shows up to fight Cheer and four random thugs.
Yep, its like the MCU had considered having Cap say “Avengers Assemble” when they were fighting a couple of robots instead of Thanos.
What a mess.
Also having Jason say, in real life (not illusion world), “You know what happiness is? It’s knowing that others have your back.” about this group of people is the perfect recipe for a big OOC moment for absolutely everyone. I cannot believe they have dragged Jason back to this awful concept and that they have sank him so low. It’s quite honestly, disgusting.
But the horrors don’t end there, we have a wonderful moment after Jason gives Batman the antidote, Jason stops Batman from punching the living shit out of Cheer. Because I am not stupid. There is no way in the world that you can convince me that Jason just stopped Batman from killing Cheer.
How incredibly delusional do you have to be to write Batman finally killing someone and that someone being Cheer, a guy that was introduced to comics two months ago?
Yes, later its said that between the gas and the antidote Bruce was a little too crazy and couldn’t help himself BUT I call bullshit once more, because Bruce has gone completely bat-shit-crazy on people before! I remember two recent instances in which that happened. Batman #57 in which Bruce beats the living shit out of KGBeast after he shot Dick. And the other one is Batman beating up Jason more brutally than he ever beat up Joker in RHatO #25.
DC cannot fuck with me. I might has bought this digital comic for 8 dollars but I am not buying that bullshit.
ALSO, there was no need for Zdarsky to do Jason as dirty as he did him when he made him say: “If you are going to come down from mount judgement to MY level for once… he’s not the guy to do it for.”
Zdarsky, why did you write a Red Hood story when you hate Red Hood? Couldn’t you have just told DC that you wanted to write a love letter to Batman? Once again, I am reading a Red Hood story for RED HOOD content not Batman content. Is it really that hard? I bet that if Zdarsky had asked DC to let him write a Batman story they would have said yes, there are like 20 Batman stories, they wouldn’t say no to one more!
Can you tell I am mad? And salty?
This post is so long and so full of anger, I am truly sorry for that but I have to write these feelings down or I would explode. And I am not even done, our suffering, Jason Nation, continues.
But first a little break from the pain, Tyler. Thank you after all the pain this book has given me Tyler is back and just like I predicted his mom is fine and he will stay with her, they both have been given a place and money to rebuild their life (not given by Jason nor Dick but I was close enough). The only happy ending that Tyler could have, he had and I am thankful for that, we even got a little adorable moment between the Red Hood and the Blue Hood.
I am weak for these little glimpses of a good Jason take in the middle of an incredibly awful/OOC story. And just to live in my own fantasy world I will headcanon that Jason promised himself to keep an eye out for Tyler and his mom. He would have wanted to know about their life and that they are still out of trouble.
Jason is a good man, don’t you forget that DC, I don’t care how much you twist it. Jason killing Tyler’s dad wasn’t a horrible act, it was fair game. That man was a horrible person, he drugged his child and made his wife (?) almost overdose. You never gave context as to why that man was working as a drug dealer but you told us those things so Jason should never feel like he did something wrong. As far as we know, Tyler and his mom are better off without him.
Having said that, lets go back to the pain of what is reading a Red Hood story.
“I’m giving up the guns.”
You know what, fine, as long as DC doesn’t pull another “I will stop being Red Hood for you Barbara” I will be fine. He can kill people with other things, he used to have the all-blades, he had normal swords and he had crowbars.
I will sacrifice Jason looking hot as hell when he pulls out his guns just to keep him as the Red Hood, all DC has to do is not give him that stupid… bat… symbol… oh no…. oh my god I can feel it… that thing, that horrible thing is making a comeback! NO!
Jason and Bruce’s talk is basic and it doesn’t do anything for anyone, in the end saying that Jason isn’t changing his ways for Bruce but that he is doing it for himself is more of the same. We know he is doing it for Bruce and we know DC is doing it because they cannot handle good, complex and interesting characters. We know that and sadly we have to live with it.
About Bruce’s illusion, well, Bruce has said that he wanted to kill the clown for a very long time and in the King run it was basically said that if Bruce were to be happy then the idea of Batman would die.
Listen, between me and you, sometimes I think that the Joker isn’t that big of a problem for Gotham as a whole, that clown has beef with the Bat and no one else. If Bruce has killed the Joker Jason would have been happy with Bruce all those years ago but killing the Joker wouldn’t make Gotham a safe place and any of his kids happier.
Bruce needs to care for his children, but he won’t do that, he has Dick for that. Taking care and raising Damian? No, thank you, I will not do that. Giving a shit about my son who lost all his memories and is alone? No thank you, I won’t do that and then I will lie about having watched him over. Tim? Oh, never heard of him, sorry.
The last page of this story is the one of Jason arriving home and finding a new suit that Bruce gave him with the bat symbol on it. That symbol that he had ripped off of Jason’s beat up body back in RHatO #25 (nope, I am not letting that one go).
Oh, and Bruce leaving that suit in Jason’s home gives me the same exact vibes as the time that Bruce was like “Long overdue. This is where you belong. As one of us. One of the family” in Nightwing #74 a second after Dick had regained his memories.
I don’t know why but they make him sound incredibly cold and like these people are just his pawns that he needs to rope back in every time they get away from him. It’s very disturbing.
Anyway, that’s all from me, I obviously LOVED this book, best Jason Todd/Red Hood characterisation ever! 11/10 would recommend to everyone including my enemies!

Err (on the side of Errand)
Pairing: Osamu x gn!reader
WC: 2k
Genre/Tags: romcom, meet-cute/meet-awkward, fake dating
A/N: For my first and one and only Cass @kuroowo. Ultra happy belated LOL and thanks for joining the MYML event and taking a leap-of-faith. Banner is by Cass too!! I love this one, it just fits the story so well.
Osamu is two blocks away from the supermarket. He texts a line, "you owe me", to Atsumu before shoving his phone into his pocket. It's an incredibly busy day for him and there are plenty of errands to run. He's still learning the ropes at a restaurant, but one day...one day he'll have his own! He's in such a rush he didn't even have time to take off his badge! And if he's so busy, why not put the errands off to another day? Well because every month on this day, the supermarket has its special sale. Sometimes it's on all brands of rice, other days it's on cleaning supplies. But today, it's extra special.
You are one block away from the supermarket. You peek at the time on your phone before tossing the device into your bag. It's not a good day for you, waking up with an awful crick in your neck. Your face is just a tad puffy from the excessive (but undeniably delicious) amount of sodium in the late-night "snack", followed by a super long day at work. And why, is it that despite how awful you feel on this otherwise lovely day, you are dragging yourself to the supermarket? Besides the fact that your fridge is beyond empty, it's of course because of the supermarket discount. Extra discounts.
Once you get past the sliding doors, it's just mayhem. Voices echoing, people rushing everywhere. You're lucky to pick up a basket that got pushed and forgotten in a corner. Somehow by following the waves of people, going along with the tide of the human sea, you manage to find yourself at the furthest end of the whole store. Absolutely not the snack aisle that you aimed to be at in the first place. You pick up a plastic basin and scrutinize the overly saturated hue. Do you need this? Ahh. You stack the bin back with its other friends and continue down the aisle hoping the other end will have some leeway.
Osamu enters and luckily obtains a basket from someone leaving already. He thanks them before going about to maneuver around crowds and goes to the vegetable section. But before he gets there, he passes through the snack aisle and sees a bag of rice crackers that he used to really like. Feeling a little nostalgic, he picks it up and looks at the same old packaging with the same contents. He and Atsumu used to fight over it, till the point their parents end up getting two bags and labeling them by each twin's name. That never worked because Atsumu gave no shits. That reminds him, maybe he'll get some pudding today too. The nice ones in the glass jar sold as a solo unit, not the three-pack.
As you make your way to the snack aisle from one end, while Osamu is whipping his phone out to take a picture of the snack to send to Atsumu, the loudspeaker sounds through the grocery store.
"Welcome to EMI'S! Your friendly neighborhood supermarket! Get your fresh greens! Your snacks! And all your home needs in one place! We're having our monthly special event today and it's a BIG one! Just today, couples get 50% off all fresh produce! And additionally, the first 100 couples at our register will also receive a deluxe voucher for a romantic dinner! Only while supplies last! One-stop to get your life together, only at EMI's!"
Well shit, you're alone. Couples. Couples. Couples. What sort of madness is that? It's at this point that you are standing near the middle of the aisle, holding a snack in one hand and the shopping basket in the other, staring. The man in front of you is insanely attractive. Broad shoulders tapering down to an impeccable waistline.
Osamu mulls over the announcement details, repeating the keywords in his head. 50% fresh produce? Damn, that is really nice. He should hurry to the produce section and go get all the rest of his groceries. He sees you...sees a familiar packaging that you're holding.
"Ah," he points at your hand, "that one is really good." He holds the one he just grabbed too.
His voice is pleasant and what you notice is that he's alone. You flash him a grin, "I know! Even though it's been so many years, the packaging design hasn't even changed yet either. I can notice it anywhere."
Osamu nods fervently, as though he has finally met someone of the same caliber, level of taste, as he. "The same company that makes it also came out with some new flavors, but I haven't tried them yet." He takes a few steps closer to you and points out the products on the shelves.
"Woah," you take a step to get a better look, "Okay, maybe I'll try something new today!"
From your current distance, you can easily see the inscription on the metal tag across his chest, Miya Osamu. He seems friendly. Come on just ask, you tell yourself. It's not as though it is real. Not as though you'll ever see him again. And if he's alone, then it's a win-win for both of you solo errand-runners.
"So—"
"Oh, those pudding cups are great!" He points out the glass pudding jars in your basket. "Where did you get them?"
You point behind you from where you came from. Right when you are also expertly about to add on your proposal to the end when Osamu's phone rings. Alas, that's how Miya Osamu, the fake boyfriend target zooms past you, screaming, "Shut up 'Tsumu" into the phone and going for what looks like the pudding.
You sigh and look at your shopping basket. If you can't get the discount, should you buy all of these? But you don't come here that frequently and you do need to stock up. Ramen. Ramen. Ramen. Hm. Yes.
It's been fifteen minutes after Miya Osamu walks past you, and now you are waiting in line for the cash register, behind a familiar person yet again. You recognize the dark t-shirt and shoulders; even with the subdued colors of the shirt, the fabric fits snugly around him and makes him look extremely handsome. Should you even bother to give another shot?
The current guests at the register are gathering their bags, ready to exit. A couple. Maybe it's at this specific instance and visual reminder, Miya Osamu finally recollects the complete loudspeaker announcement. As if the store picks up his confusion, the loudspeaker announcement sounds again, "Welcome to EMI's!"
Couples. COUPLES! Osamu wants to just scream. The couple leaves and the cashier waves a hand calling out, "Next in line." Osamu panics, getting ready to give up and gather the monstrous pile of groceries he's carrying and put them back where they belong, in utter shame and embarrassment. He wouldn't have bought this much today if there wasn't a special discount event. Hell, he even invited people over today...food on him. It's okay, Osamu tells himself. He has big boy money now from his job, it won't break his wallet completely.
Suddenly, he remembers how you wanted to tell him something earlier at the snack aisle. Seeing how you're alone right now too, Osamu dares to consider the possibility that you were going to propose acting as a couple at the register. But Atsumu just had to call and disrupt things at the time. And it's too late now because the cashier is right there and you're looking at your phone lost in thought.
"Ah Y/N!" Osamu calls out, "It's our turn." It's worth a shot, if not then he'll dig a hole and just jump into it. He tries his hardest to shoot a look at you. Please play along. Please understand the situation.
You look up from your phone, confused at the voice calling your name. How in the world does he know?! What's going on. Before you can even process your thoughts, Osamu comes by to take the basket from your hands and puts it on the belt.
"Aw! What a lovely couple! You two look absolutely adorable together!" the cashier granny coos.
The situation begins to unfold in the most bizarre way possible. Between nervous chuckles and each beep of items being weighed and scanned, you and Osamu stand in front of the register awkwardly. Pray tell, what kind of couple gives off the vibe of coming from the two of you?
"Got together not too long ago, huh?"
"W-what?" Osamu stammers, unsure how to even answer.
You glance at Osamu's face flushing in embarrassment and decide to answer. "Yep, just recently! First time grocery shopping together though, we were just looking at the snacks we liked when we were young. Lot's of similarities actually!"
"That's so sweet!" Cashier Granny comments, scanning the last item. "Looks like there's a feast going on! You two picked a good day to come. Okay. Now, factoring the discount, whew, it's this much." She taps the screen to show the total.
Both of you reach for the wallet at the same time. The Cashier Granny watches both of you with mirth in her wise, old eyes. She says something unexpected. "I can split it across two cards based on the basket," she offers.
But wait, does this mean that she knows? She hums an old tune while punching some numbers in and charges each card separately. You look at the screen and see that the discount is still there. And there aren't any questions either, so maybe you're just overthinking it?
The cashier granny gives Osamu a fancy envelope. "This is a coupon to the restaurant that we're partnering with. And lucky for the two of you! It's the 100th one. Last coupon we have!"
"Thanks," he says awkwardly, receiving the paper. Earlier, he was sure the two of you made it obvious that not only were you two not a couple, the two of you barely even knew each other. The whole show was a mess and beyond fake.
"That restaurant is really good!" Granny mentions, "really nice ambiance, the perfect place to get to know each other better." She finishes off with a wink.
Flabbergasted, you're about to make a retort when Osamu gathers up all the groceries and pulls you off to the side. The Granny only laughs and waves her hand to the next customer in line.
Outside EMI's, you feel your blood pressure just rising higher and higher. That granny knew. Of course, she knew, Osamu thinks to himself. It's just so obvious.
There is one question on your mind that you now suddenly remember. Squinting at Osamu, you break the silence and ask, "Oh yea, how did you know my name?"
Osamu gestures to your hip with his chin jutting out just slightly. "You didn't take your badge off...like me."
You follow his direction and glance down. Sure enough, your badge is still clipped there. Fair, he's just observant, sometimes.
"Cool."
Silence.
You take a deep breath, "So, I'll be going now, uhh Miya. Nice meeting you..."
"Wait!" Osamu calls you before you can leave. He struggles to balance all the bags of groceries that he has but manages to pull out the envelope coupon. "Um, this is for two people. Do you...Would you want to go? I recognize the name and it's pretty good I've heard."
Silence, as you try to process the situation. Osamu's phone rings again and he quickly sets his grocery down for a moment, scribbling something on the coupon and shoving the slightly crumpled envelope into your hand. He answers the phone but doesn't respond yet, still looking at you and attempting to convey his thoughts. "Hope to hear from you Y/N! Nice meeting ya," he glances at the phone briefly and turns his attention back to you momentarily, "and feel free to call me Osamu! Sorry, I really have to go."
Osamu takes a few more steps back, waving at you and telling his phone that "you're calling at a horrible time." He takes some more strides away and every now and then turns to see if you're still watching his leaving form. Two more awkward waves later, he's gone from your sight.
You finally start to walk in the other direction to where you came from. You pass the first block away from EMI's and arrive at a pedestrian crossing. While waiting for the lights to change, you decide to examine the envelope Osamu shoves into your hand. It's a messy but still legible scrawl.
Hi Y/N! If ya wanna go with someone else, here ya go. But maybe we can go together, this is my number.
You chuckle to yourself, should you?
"Should I?" you ask yourself aloud.
The pedestrian light turns green.
Yes.

Hiii, do you have any recs for Robin Jason comics? I'd love to read more about him but I have no clue where to start. Love your art btw it's all adorable <3
Sure thing!!! And omg thank you 🥺🥺 your art is super cute too!!
If I were to rec One Thing as a starting point for Robin Jason, Batman #408-#429 covers Jason’s main run as Robin and his death arc and is the main essential reading I’d recommend. It’s fairly short and a good place to start imo!
Among others, it includes his post-crisis origin and first outing as Robin, his first meeting with Dick, the Garzonas incident, and his death and its immediate aftermath in the Death in the Family arc.
While Jason’s time as Robin in post crisis is fairly short and not as hard to get through as other characters with longer runs, i know Reading Comics Hard so I’ll make a shorter list first, with more recs under the cut!
Batman #408-#409 (Jason's origin)
Batman #410-#411 (his first outing as Robin)
Batman #413 (smart boy Jason)
Batman #415 (more good Jason moments)
Batman #416 (his and Dick's first meeting, also Dick and Bruce argue)
Batman Annual #12 (has a solo Jason story set at his school)
Detective Comics #569-#570 (Jason gets to kick the Joker's butt)
Detective Comics #571 (the Scarecrow kidnaps Jason)
Detective Comics #573 (this one’s just cute)
Superman Annual #11 (Bruce, Jason and Wonder Woman visit Superman on his birthday and stuff happens)
Blue Devil #19 (Jason is pen pals with Kid Devil)
Batman: the Cult (a 4-issue pretty dark miniseries where Bruce is kidnapped and brainwashed by a cult. Some great Jason moments)
Batman #424-#425 (The Garzonas storyline, or when Jason may or may not have pushed somebody off a building. Trigger warnings for sexual assault and suicide)
Batman #426-#429 (A Death in The Family, or Jason’s death arc)
I’ll be referencing this Jason reading list, since it’s what I followed when I started reading. It can be checked for a more comprehensive list of his appearances too, since I’m not aiming for a full list! (though I might edit it to include more stuff eventually.)
First things first, Jason got rebooted once during his time as Robin; he was originally a circus kid like Dick in pre-crisis (before the reboot), and later in post-crisis got his more well-known origin as the orphan who stole the tires off the batmobile. I’ll be focusing on post-crisis Robin Jason since I’m still reading his pre-crisis run, but the list I linked has more info on that if you’re interested!
Batman and Robin-focused
Stories centered on the Dynamic Duo!
Batman #408-#429 - Jason’s post-crisis run as Robin, as mentioned above! The last four issues are the Death in the Family arc. The Batman: Second Chances trade collects a good chunk of these (#408-#416), plus Batman Annual #11 and a couple stories from before Jason’s post-crisis origin.
Detective Comics #568-#582 - Jason’s Robin run in Detective Comics! It’s a fun read and Alan Davis’ art style is very cute imo. (Jason isn’t around from #575 to #578 due to getting hurt in #573)
Batman Annual #10-#12 - More Batman and Robin stories. #12 has a Jason solo story set at his school!
Batman: the Cult - a 4-issue miniseries where Bruce is kidnapped and brainwashed by a cult. A pretty dark story and one of the last ones from before his death. Jason has some great moments in it!
Dc Retroactive: Batman - The 80s - Story from 2011 written by Mike Barr, who wrote Jason’s 80s Robin stories in Detective Comics!
Robin 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spetacular - One of the stories, More Time, is about Jason and Bruce and goes between the past (with Jason as Robin) and the present (with Jason as Red Hood). Short and very sweet!
Crossovers/Teamups
In which Jason meets or teams up with other characters, with or without Batman!
Blue Devil #19 - Jason is pen pals with Eddie Bloomberg/Kid Devil and teams up with him!
Action Comics #556 + #594 - Jason meets Superman!
Superman Annual #11 - For The Man Who Has Everything, or where Jason goes with Bruce to Superman’s birthday, first meets Wonder Woman, and Stuff Happens. (Jason gets to be the hero!)
New Teen Titans V2 (1984) #18-#31 - Jason joins the Teen Titans for a while! It’s fun to see him in a team and his characterization here is really good imo. (this is the span of issues he appears in but he isn’t in all of them)
Legends (six-part miniseries) - A DC crossover event! Jason has short but great appearances (the time where he breaks his leg, but wants to get up and help anyway).
Nightwing Year One #101-#106 - A rewrite of Dick's Nightwing origin with occasional Jason appearances until #106, which is a retelling of their first meeting where they work together to rescue Alfred. While I have Issues with the characterization of Jason in this, it has some cute moments and I’d be remiss to not include the story that introduces Dick’s nickname of “Little Wing” for Jason.
After his Death
Stuff dealing with the aftermath of Jason’s death and the impact it left on others. (Some of the stuff here is just listed for a single page or panel rather than a full story about Jason)
Batman #430-#432 + #496 - Bruce in the aftermath of Jason’s death.
Batman Annual #13 - Jason appears in a flashback.
The New Titans #55 - Dick and the Titans find out about Jason’s death, and Dick confronts Bruce about it.
Batman: Year Three + A Lonely Place of Dying - While these focus on Dick and Tim respectively, they’re set after Jason’s death and show how Bruce is dealing with it. Year Three is in Batman #436-#439 and A Lonely Place of Dying (Tim’s origin story) is in Batman #440/New Titans #60/Batman #441/New Titans #61/Batman #442, also included in reprints of Death in the Family.
Detective Comics #618 - Has a nice little moment of Tim looking up to Jason.
Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #100 - The issue is mainly a Dick origin story, but in the end there’s a sweet and sad story about Jason’s beginning and ending as Robin.
Nightwing Secret Files and Origins - On the first story, Taking Wing, Jason appears to Dick as a dream/hallucination while the latter is having a near-death experience and accompanies him through various of Dick’s memories.
Joker: Last Laugh #6 - The one time when, upon believing Tim was killed and being taunted with Jason’s death, Dick kills the Joker. (the full thing is a six-issue miniseries)
Nightwing (1996) #63 - The aftermath of Dick killing the Joker (though he was revived), but I’m mainly including this for the one panel that shows a picture of Dick and Jason on what seems to be a ski trip.
Batman: Gotham Knights #34 - At the end there’s a story called “The Delusions of Alfred Pennyworth” about Jason’s ghost and Alfred.
Batman: Gotham Knights #43-#45 - Has a flashback to a Barbara and Jason teamup and a recap of Jason’s death as a social worker looks into it and investigates Bruce’s family.
Detective Comics #790 - Bruce talks to Cass about Jason on the day of Jason’s birthday.
Robin V4 #85 - The story itself is about the Joker reflecting on the Robins and Jason only appears briefly, but I think it’s worthwile to include as it’s one of the few times where the involvement of Jason’s mother in his death is acknowledged after Death in the Family. (Also there’s a panel where Jason kicks the joker on the crotch)
Green Arrow V3 (2001) #7 - The one panel where Jason is shown swinging around in heaven :)
Alternate Universes/Other Media
Some stuff that doesn’t fit anywhere else/isn’t quite comics/isn’t really canon, but I think is neat and wanted to include!
Letters - letters from readers sent during when Jason was Robin and after his death. They can be interesting to look through to get a sense of how he was seen by readers at the time (there’s even an eulogy by a clergyman!). The ones I’ve seen can be found in this tag, and this post links to a few too (as well as some other info regarding Jason and the vote that led to his death).
The Batman Files - A book that contains several files over various topics and characters across Batman’s history. Among other things, it has Jason’s death certificate. (mainly including this because early on I spent a while trying to find out how old he was when he died)
Tiny Titans #23, #29, #33, #39, #45, #47 - An adorable alternate universe comic in a kid-friendly setting! Jason’s design in it is very cute.
Batman The Brave and the Bold #13 - Jason and Robins from other points in time team up to save Batman!
Teen Titans Go! season 6, episode 17 (Egg Hunt) - He doesn’t actually appear, but Jason is namedropped and said to be Batman’s favorite Robin.
Batman And The New Robin (unmade cartoon) - An unproduced animated TV series from the late 80s that would have starred Bruce as Batman and Jason as Robin! Unfortunately the project was abandoned and the show was never made, but the full series bible is available to read in its entirety and a link to it can be found here! There’s a page on it on the Lost Media Wiki as well.

100 follower celebration story
Thanks again for getting me to 100 followers so quickly. For the event I let people suggest words I had to use in a short story, and I came out with a little Spacer vignette. The words you all gave me were Afternoon, Charming, Season, Glass, Sway, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (special thanks to @kvothier for being super mean with that one), and Naval.
---
Gravity wasn’t kind to Cassiopeia Yunuen-Yang, not even the microgravity of Enceladus. Her lineage on both sides was pure Spacer, not a planetborn soul for generations, and gravity was the antithesis of her foundation. She loathed the thought of going planetside, which was exactly why she had to and exactly why she volunteered to do this cargo run alone.
As she approached the moon, Cass set her rig to autopilot and dressed for a planetary excursion. She traded her comfortable workman’s jumpsuit for a flightsuit that was just a titch more formal – best to make a good impression, her older crewmates always insisted. It was tight and covered her entirely from neck to toes, except for her too-long arms that peeked out of the sleeves. Her compression gloves went up past her forearms and covered the rest. She dumped out a package of metal ring splints that floated around the cockpit while she struggled to slide each one onto the correct joint and knock them in place on the gloves. One was lost under the pilot seat and another nearly floated into the air vent before she could capture it.
She wished she’d had the sense to put on her leg braces before the hand splints, which severely limited her range of motion. Cass muttered curses to herself as she fumbled with each strap of the brace, pulling them nice and taut. If there was too much slack, she wouldn’t be able to put her boots on over them. She taped up her left shoulder, which had dislocated on her last landing, and shimmied into a back brace. All the landing precautions made her feel like a sea slug jammed into an exoskeleton, stiff and straining against all the new restrictions. She knew she looked like an especially gangly robot in her excursion gear; her thick prescription goggles only made the resemblance more uncanny.
In all the time it took to dress herself to go planetside, she had entered Enceladus’ communication range. An automated statement of purpose request blinked in her notifications. Cass strapped herself back into her seat and opened up the request on her main holoscreen. The video channel displayed a woman in an Enceladan green naval uniform with a wide smile and a flat, prerecorded voice.
“Welcome to Enceladus. Please state your name and docking pass number. If you do not have a docking pass –“
“Cassiopeia Yunuen-Yang,” Cass cut in. The woman said nothing, and although Cass knew the program was just searching for her information she felt as awkward as if a flesh and blood person were in the cockpit with her. “Uh, Cass. Just Cass. Docking pass number… uh…” She floundered around looking for that pass that had drifted away from her and read off the number.
The program buffered a minute longer, and then the artificial woman came back to life. “Thank you, Cassiopeia Yunuen-Yang,” she said, subbing in the recording of Cass saying her own name. “Please proceed to docking terminal 36-B1. Your docking permission is valid for 48 Standard Hours.”
Cass cringed at the sound of her own recorded voice and quickly shut off the video call. Finding her docking terminal at the Enceladan Central Hub was no easy feat; the satellite was gargantuan, made even larger by the various ships attached at their ports. She circled the satellite twice looking for 36-B1, which turned out to be sandwiched between a Kuiper Belt Alliance government ship and a JovOp freighter. Even navigating her little one-person rig between the hulking ships was an impressive feat that forced her to really focus on her parking technique. She felt dizzy looking out the glass of her cockpit window to avoid hitting the other ships, rather than relying on her navigation equipment. It was a tight job, but she managed.
Then it was time to descend. Cass cringed as she left the comforting lack of gravity in her ship for the artificial gravity of the Central Hub. All at once she felt her body sag toward the floor, her feet stuck to the ground like glue. She swayed on the spot, her whole body aching to crumple despite all her braces. Cass took a staggering step forward, then another, and another. She dragged herself through the terminal to the landing shuttles, dimly aware of how the other people on board gave her wide berth. They were all so small, so strange. It was charming, these short, strong people pushing through the gravity like it wasn’t there at all.
The shuttle down was painful, but Cass was used to this now. The acceleration pushed her deep into her seat, and she could feel the delicate capillaries in her nose rupture. She wiped away the nosebleed with the back of her hand, and when she looked at the blood she caught sight of her wristwatch. It was already the afternoon; she was behind schedule. Juno Erendiz would be waiting for her, and Cass knew she disliked tardiness.
The truly harrowing part of her descent was switching from the shuttle that landed on Enceladus’ icy surface to the submarine that would take her to its submerged colonies. Cass had landed before, had run plenty of planetside errands, but had never been underwater. She understood the weight to be even heavier than gravity, and shuddered as she entered the depths. Cass liked to think herself seasoned, but she felt like a first time lander, a child all over again.
Dunyazad was the largest city in Enceladus, a ten mile wide floating metropolis under the planet’s largest crater. It was home to a bazaar selling, among other things, the best water purification tablets in the solar system. Cass’ captain had made contact with the seller Erendiz, and for just one day she would reserve a year’s supply of tablets for Cass and her crew. After that, who knew. Cass was running out of time. She raced through the city as fast as her wobbly legs would allow, which was fairly fast given the length of her stride. Being eight feet tall in gravity had some advantages. She saw easily above the heads of the crowd, and was able to locate Erendiz’s store sign from a dozen stalls away. She picked up her pace.
As she approached, Cass saw a crowd around the stall she needed. They wore Enceladan green – cops. She slowed her pace and approached them warily, and upon picking her out of the crowd the cops eyed her with equal suspicion.
“Get a move on, Spacer. Nothing to see here.”
“I was, um, hoping to buy some water purification tablets? Where is Juno Erendiz?” Cass was painfully aware of the way the International Standard stuck in her mouth and warped with her accent.
“You working with Erendiz?” One of the cops stood up, making Cass take a step back.
“I’m just a customer…”
“Go shop elsewhere. This is a crime scene.”
“Crime scene?”
“Stupid spasisik don’t even speak the language,” one of them muttered under his breath. “Get lost, unless you want to be arrested for attempted smuggling.”
“I just need to buy some water purification tablets for my crew; I’m no smuggler.”
The cops looked at her disbelievingly. Cass recoiled under their gaze and slunk off, knowing she could never afford the bail if they did decide to arrest her.
Well this was just wonderful. Positively supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Erendiz was a smuggler, and Cass was fresh out of luck. In her frustration she punched a wall, and instantly regretted it as she felt her finger bones crack. Her hand fell to her side. What would she tell the crew? They could barely afford Erendiz’s price; there was no way they could pay for a year’s supply of legal tablets.
She searched the bazaar, but found that the sellers were reluctant to speak to her. Even in one of Saturn’s largest cities, a Spacer was an unusual and unwelcome sight. Cass was a failure. She couldn’t imagine what her crew would do without those tablets; they had been relying on her. She could picture Captain Nehar’s tortured expression as he tried to hide his concern when she’d tell him. She grit her teeth and pressed on. There was still a day before her docking permit expired; she had time to save the day.
Cass tried every single stall in the bazaar. The vast majority shooed her away, believing her to have no money, and the remainder kept an uncomfortably close eye on her, as if expecting her to steal. Many of the vendors sold water purification tablets, each more expensive than the last. She double and triple checked how much had been transferred to her bank chip by the captain for this operation, but the number stayed the same. With the money she’d been given, she could get the crew maybe a two month supply. It would have to suffice for now. She glumly made her purchase and worked her way back toward the surface.
The reverse trip was just as painful as arriving, but she was rewarded with the blissful lack of gravity in her ship. Cass stowed her meager purchases in the back and proceeded to take off all her assistive devices. She felt free, but the pit in her stomach only deepened as she prepared to leave this stupid colony. She couldn’t imagine how they would survive with so few purification tablets, but she tried to reassure herself that somehow they would. They were Spacers – if nothing else, they were a resourceful lot. Cass believed in her captain, and she believed in her crew. They would survive like they always had, somehow. She carefully backed out of her docking port and began the long trek home.
