The well delivered, surrounded by knowing silence "I know" and "okay" used to be a Casper Midnightburger exclusive, but Frank and June are also pretty good at it and I've been thinking a lot about it.
I think the reason it resonates so well is that, in a world where everyone constantly tries to fix everything, it feels really, really good for someone to just acknowledge your feelings/problems and for them to be willing to sit with them, without trying to take them out of your hands by offering solutions or apologies.

same thing as pocket but what about barbatos, does he have any others besides his nephew
Barb's family, oh god here we go: There's his wife, Izadora. Master of pastries and backing harmonies. Often hangs out with a group of friends she has- they talk about a TON of things, ranging from planetary news to top charters on the music scene.
His kids, Melody, Maria, and Terra. Three young adults having been shown the opening gate to the opportunity-filled world before them, freed from the cruel confinement of a school system. also they know exactly how to bully Barb and "Cousin Casper" and get away with it scot-free.
His older sister, Midori, who creates lightshows for popular venues. She's often concerned for her "baby brother" for not getting out of the house much, often considering his self-inflicted work ethic to be whistleblower levels of unfair and unusual. She's married to a peculiar woman, who's so inner-balanced that you'd believe she was shining under god rays when she smiled.
He has a younger brother, father of Casper, but... He's long since ditched town. Nobody knows what happened to him and his wife... except for Barb.
An older brother too, but he tragically died outside his home continent.
As for his mother, she sneaks into his house every once in a while, often bringing free bullying ammunition, in the form of embarrassing childhood memories, to his wife and kids as she visits. She too has skeletons in her closet.

Tutoring Phantom Ch 1
Characters: Danny, Dash, Kwan Genre:Â Hurt/Comfort, Friendship Word Count: 4036 Summary: It was funny. A year ago Dash was all but praying for Fenton to shut up, but now he would do anything to hear him speak.
This is my very belated gift for @kinglazrus! It has ended up becoming a twoshot. Hereâs chapter one!
Read on: [ao3] [ffn]
---
The revelation shook Amity Park to its core.
Fenton? Really? That Fenton?Â
The scrawny one?Â
The kid of those nut-job parents?
The one that got picked on?
I heard heâs a loner. Super quiet.Â
It was always the quiet onesâŚ
Isnât he failing school? Maybe thatâs why. Maybe itâs because heâs a ghost. Arenât ghosts less intelligent than humans?
Teresa told me he ditches class all the time. Probably because of his Obsession.
Thatâs so creepy.
Fenton was...Phantom. Danny was Phantom. It was simply indisputable. Of course some conspiracy theorists were probably screaming about photoshop and CGI, but when Dash saw the transformation happen on television, there was no other way he could make sense of it.
Fenton was Phantom.Â
The Guys in White had figured it out, evidently. According to their spokesperson, they had been analyzing Phantomâs ectoplasm samples left from a ghost fight when they found human DNA infused into the ectoplasm. Scans showed that it belonged to Danny Fenton.
When the GiW collected more samples from various ghost fights, all the results were the same.Â
Fenton was Phantom.
So they developed a gun. And when Phantom was distracted with a ghost fight they denied planting (but they must have, there was no possible way they could have captured him otherwise), they hit him with it.
And he transformed right there in front of everyone.Â
Fenton was Phantom.
And Dash had spent years ruining his life.
Dash collapsed on his couch, his glassy eyes fixated on the still image of Fentonâs horrified face. His hair was wild, his eyes even more so. In the background, he was surrounded by men in white suits, all armed to the teeth with guns. Above him, helicopters soared.Â
Fenton was trapped.
There was no way out of it.
Dash had spent the better part of his life bullying the boy who would become his hero, and now he would never be able to apologize.
---
Well, maybe Dash spoke too soon.
By some miracle, Fenton was released from the governmentâs clutches.Â
Eventually.Â
Dash didnât understand the science behind it, but apparently Fenton wasnât dead. He was...almost dead? But not quite. He was just alive enough to have a pulse, just alive enough to have a heartbeat, just alive enough to be considered human in the eyes of the law.
Dash didnât want to acknowledge just how relieved he was at this revelation. And if he were a good person, his relief would have come from the part where that meant his classmate was actually alive.
But he wasnât a good person. What good person spends their downtime picking on the weak kids at school? What good person takes out their aggression on those who donât fight back?
Dash wasnât kind, he wasnât nice, he wasnât selfless. And thatâs why he was relieved.
Because all of his relief came from the fact that if Fenton was alive, then Dash didnât have to live with the guilt that heâd tormented a dead person. He didnât have to lie awake at night wondering if he was the one to push Fenton past his breaking point, if he were responsible for Fentonâs death.
Because Fenton wasnât dead. So what if he was almost dead? So what if he probably did dieâif only for a momentâbefore his body was kickstarted back to life? Fenton wasnât dead, so Dash didnât have to think about it.
Dash could get away with it all scot free.
Just like always.
---
Fenton was allowed to come to school.
If Dash were honest, he was surprised by this. He didnât think the PTA would have caved to the students, who had demanded that Fenton be allowed to return to school. But apparently they relented.
Under certain conditions.
Conditions which the government was more than happy to collaborate with.
It was Fentonâs first day back, and yet he didnât look all there. He was pale, sickly, his hair too long and voice nonexistent.
But his eyes, those scared Dash the most.
His eyes were dead.Â
It was as if someone had taken all the light that was Danny and replaced it with a puppet. There was nothing in there. Nothing inside of his skin. It was...dead.
What did they do to him?
The teachers didnât try to make him engage with their lessons. They only looked at Danny with pity in their eyes when they would walk by. And Danny wouldnât acknowledge them because he was just empty.Â
Dash wanted to approach him. Talk to him. He had a whole speech prepared, and he knew Kwan did too. But the speech had all but died on his lips when he saw Fenton that morning. He knewâhe knewâthat nothing was going to get through to him.
Fenton was Phantom, but Fenton wasnât even there.
And in his place was nothing but bones wrapped in skin held together by metal contraptions on his wrists, ankles, and neck.
Dash shivered. The one on his neck was blinking. It was a warning, Dash realized. A warning that Danny was dangerous. He was inhuman. He was Phantom.Â
The students avoided him. Even the ones who had advocated for his safe return. Dash didnât blame them, either. No one could have predicted that this would be coming back to their class.
Even so, Manson and Foley stuck by him. Dash watched them guide him to each class, carrying his books and trying their best to include him in the conversation. Sometimes he would even lock eyes with them, sometimes his lips would twitch upward and his eyes would brighten as if he were following along with Manson and Foleyâs antics.Â
Those moments were rare though. Fleeting.
Because in the end, the modicum of emotion would always vaporize from Fentonâs face and theyâd be left with the blank, faraway glazed expression that he always seemed to wear now. The duo would be left talking between themselves, and Dash was left looking at them from the sidelines waiting for Fenton to open his mouth and just respond.
Gone were the days of the snarky comments and muttered undertones. Gone were Fentonâs stupid comments that Dash spent years beating him up over.Â
It was funny. A year ago Dash was all but praying for Fenton to shut up, but now he would do anything to hear him speak.
No one knew what happened to Fenton during his stay with the government. No one knew what they did to him. Because, as far as Dash knew, Fenton hadnât said a word since he returned home. Dash wasnât sure if it was because Danny couldnât respond, or if he just wouldnât.Â
He didnât know which one was worse.
---
It had been one month since Fenton returned to school. Anyone with a pair of eyes could see that he wasnât doing well.
He drifted from class to class like he was in a dream, often not even bothering to put his notebook on his desk as he sat in each class staring at the wall with the same dead expression.
Fenton didnât take his tests or quizzes with the class anymore. He was in the same math class as Dash and only lasted one exam before Mr. Falluca started proctoring his exams separately. Rumor had it they were trying to get him extra help, but the PTA didnât want him integrated with Casper Highâs most vulnerable students.
Dash thought that was a load of crap, personally. Dash had a few teammates who got extra help from the schoolâs learning center and they could handle themselves just fine.
Regardless, at this rate, Fenton was going to fail out of school.
Which was why it was of no surprise to Dash when he and Kwan were called down to Mr. Lancerâs office one day with a request to tutor Fenton.
âI know this is a lot of responsibility, and I know you havenât always seen ways with Mr. Fenton in the past,â Mr. Lancer said, his fingers steepled in front of his chin. âBut I canât ask just anyone to do this. You two are leaders in your class, and you have some high marks to boot. Mr. Lee, you have consistently scored in the top ten percent of the class in your English and history courses, and Mr. Baxter, this past year youâve done remarkably well in your math course.â
Dash had been regarded as many different things. Athletic, social, hotheaded, cocky, braveâbut never smart. He was always known as the high school jock stereotype, he never did well in school.
But Mr. Lancer always knew he was more than just a stereotype, and when he called Dash and his parents after school one day with the recommendation that Dash get tested for ADD, suddenly everything clicked.Â
It was amazing how a small pill each morning could turn Dash from a C student to a rising A student in the matter of a few months.
âAnd because I know how much Iâm asking of you two, I have spoken to your teachers and they are willing to give you extra credit on your final exams as compensation.â
Dash cleared his throat. âMr, Lancer,â he started, his voice scratchy. âWith all due respect, why have us tutor him? Why not have the teachers do it?â
âI have been working with Mr. Fenton, and Iâll continue to through the school year. But he needs that peer to peer connection, he needs the support of those around him. Iâm sure youâve noticed the shift in your class, the growing uneasiness of those around you?â
Dash nodded. He would have had to have been blind to not see how everyone seemed to skirt around Fenton in the hallways, how nobody except Manson and Foley said so much as a âhelloâ to him.
âI understand,â said Dash.Â
âThe...ghost inhibitor thing isnât helping, either,â Kwan added. âIâve never seen that kind of technology used on any ghost. And you have to admit, Dannyâs been acting really strange lately. Like heâs not even here. Mr. Lancer, if you donât mind me asking, is it...are theyâŚ?â
The unsaid question hung in the air, and Mr. Lancerâs eyes darkened. âThereâs only so much Iâm allowed to say on this matter. But I would say your suspicions about the devices are likely to be true. Although, itâs hard for me to pinpoint exactly how much theyâre affecting Mr. Fenton. Heâs been through a lot.â
Dash felt lightheaded. So the rumors about the devices were true. At least, somewhat true.
If there was one thing both Fenton and Phantom were, it was resilient. Sure, the Guys in White could knock him down, but to change him this much? To give him so much baggage he couldnât even speak?
It screamed foul play.
âThatâs terrible,â Kwan said. âItâs sick knowing that theyâd do that to him.â
âIndeed. Which is why Iâm asking you both to step up as leaders of your class and help your fellow peer through this difficult time. If we can help Mr. Fenton become more integrated with his classmates, we may have a case to allow him to remove the inhibitors and get him real help.â
Dash could feel Kwanâs eyes on him, and he knew why. Dash and Fenton had history, and that made this complicated. There was so much unfinished business between the two.Â
Was Dash ready to take this step? Was he really ready to be the selfless, altruistic hero like Phantom instead of the bully he had always been?
âAgain, I know the school is asking so much of you both, and I am willing to personally help if need be. If, for whatever reason, you feel as though you canât do it, there will be no judgement from me or any of your other teachers. This is entirely up to you.â
If Dash said no, Kwan would follow. If Dash wasnât ready, Kwan wouldnât force him into that position. It was exactly why Dash and Kwan were such good friends: Dash got his way, and he always knew Kwan would have his back.
But that wasnât healthy. And it didnât lead to good outcomes in the long term.
Now was the time for Dash to take that step.Â
He needed to be the leader instead of the coward he always was.
âOkay,â he said. âIâll do it.â
---
If Fenton was confused as to why his two former childhood bullies were now his after school homework buddies all of the sudden, he didnât say it.
In fact, he didnât say anything at all.
But Dash knew this would happen going into it. He knew it would be difficult to tell if Fentonâs head was in the clouds or if he was truly in the present. And he knew Fenton would just go along with whatever they threw at him anyway.
Because he was Fenton. He could never let Dash have the last metaphorical word, even if he was being suppressed by the physical manifestation of the United States government on his wrist, ankles, and neck.
He was annoying like that.
âSee, this is what goes into the equation. F of x has its own definition, and g of x has its own definition. So in this problem weâre just replacing f of x and g of x with whatâs written here. You see?â Dash asked, circling the functions and drawing arrows with his multicolored pens.
Fenton just stared down at his paper.
âHere, we can do it together,â Dash said. He took Fentonâs paper and wrote out the equation, going through the problem step by step with his neatest handwriting. Following Kwanâs lead from earlier, he talked through every minute detail about the equation, pausing in between lines to allow the information to sink in, and to give Fenton the opportunity to interrupt if he was lost.
Even though it was obvious that Fenton wasnât going to interrupt.
And he didnât. He sat there, staring dully at the paper like he was watching cement dry. And at the end, once Dash put his pencil down, Fenton just ran his finger across the problem, his brow furrowed like he couldnât figure out how Dashâs writing had ended up on his paper.
And maybe he truly couldnât figure it out. Maybe he didnât understand what was happening. Maybe he had no idea that Dash was tutoring him.
Dash wasnât a mind reader. He didnât know what was going on in Fentonâs head.
âThat makes sense, Dash!â Kwan supplied from across them, his voice bright and cheery.Â
Even though they were technically just tutoring Fenton, framing the group as a small, informal study group seemed more appropriate in Dashâs eyes.Â
âI think I understand this a little better now. What do you think, Danny?â
Fenton blinked slowly, his head raising to face Kwan.
âDo you think you get the first problem?â Dash asked.
Fentonâs gaze flickered over to Dash, and the confused expression on his face deepened. He cocked his head slightly, as if he was just seeing Dash for the first time.
A beat of silence stretched around the table, and Dash held his breath, waiting for something to happen. But after a moment too long, Fenton just turned his attention back to the paper, staring at it motionless.
Dash couldnât help but send a quick âhelpâ glance over at Kwan. He had never tutored anyone in his life, much less a teen who was seemingly incapable of responding.Â
Maybe...maybe this was a mistake. Maybe he was wrong to think he could do this.
But fortunately, before he could get too deep in his own insecurities, Kwan came to the rescue. âDash, can we do one more together before trying a problem on our own? Number two looks a little different than number one, and I donât really understand how to set up the equation!â
Dash sent a mental thank you Kwanâs way before plucking a purple pen off the table. âSure!â He turned to Dannyâs paper. âOkay, this is f of x. Looking at the equation, we know that it goes here. And thisââ He swapped to a green pen ââis g of x. Where do you think this one goes?â
He sat patiently, as if he were waiting for Fenton to respond.
But Dash knew that he wouldnât. He couldnât. He was wasting his time with this pause, even if he was only doing it to be polite.
Truth be told, he didnât even think Fenton was listening to him. Fenton probably was incapable of that. Hell, he probably didnât even remember where he was or how he got here.
But, just as Dash was about to go ahead and answer his own question for Fenton, the small teen shifted beside him. Dashâs eyes snapped onto Fenton, watching as the boy lifted his arm off his lap and pointed to the paper.
Dashâs eyes trailed down to the worksheet, down to Fentonâs hand, and froze.Â
Fenton was pointing to the correct part of the equation.
He had been listening to Dash. He, somehow, was able to understand Dash.
Dash looked over to Kwan, who too was resembling a fish with his open mouth stare at the duo. His eyes met Dashâs, and a smile overtook his expression. He shot Dash a thumbs up, a clear encouragement to continue on.
âYeah,â Dash breathed, turning his attention back to Fenton. âYeah, thatâs it.â
Fentonâs hand dropped back to his lap.
âGood, now letâs solve this together.â
---
As the days turned to weeks, slowly tutoring Fenton got a little easier. Though it was still impossible for Dash and Kwan to know just how much Fenton was absorbing with their sessions, they were starting to be able to decipher small behavioral quirks in Fentonâs body language to help guide them through the haze.
An eyebrow twitch here, a tiny jerk of his pupils there. His movements were small, but telling. And when he was truly spaced out, when their questions would yield not even the faintest twitch from him, a gentle tap on his arm seemed to pull him back to reality.
Tutoring Fenton could be difficultâsome days it felt like nothing they said was committing to his fleeting memoryâbut it wasnât impossible. Because under that dense fog clouding his mind was still the annoying, snarky teen they had grown up with.
And some days, they could still see glimpses of that snarky teen in him.
âYeah so the coach is having us an extra gym routine tomorrow,â Dash said, closing his notebook and leaning back in his chair. âSo Iâll probably be a half hour late picking you up. Sound good?â
Fenton didnât respond.
Not that Dash was expecting him to.
âI hear weâre gonna have a wall-sit contest,â Kwan said. âDale crushed us all last time, but Iâll have my revenge this time around!â
Fentonâs eyes flickered up to Dash. He tapped his thigh, the corner of his lips twitching up.
âWhat?â
Fenton paused, seemingly mulling something over, before loosely pointing to Dashâs legs with a subtle smirk.
Dash sat up, realization dawning on him. âAre youâŚare you calling my legs weak?â
Judging by the ghost of an impish grin on Fentonâs features, Dash was right.
âReally? You too?â
Fenton grinned and tapped his legs again.
âOh, like youâre one to talk!â Dash crossed his arms. âI could kick your scrawny ass to next year if I wanted to!â
Fenton raised his brows ever so slightly.
âWhat, you think just because youâre Phantom that means youâre stronger than me?â Dash jammed his thumb to his chest. âDonât forget who your gym buddy was Freshman year! Once those inhibitors come off, itâs you and me at the gym! Iâd like to see you try to keep up with me, Fenton!â
Dash heard a snort from the other side of the table. His head whipped around to see Kwan with his hands cupping his mouth.
âWhat are you laughing at?â
With that, Kwan bursted out laughing and leaned back in his chair. âDude!â He exclaimed, seemingly catching a breath. âYou really think you can bench more than Phantom? Oh my godâI canât breatheâthatâs the funniest fucking thing!â
âHey, have my back here!â Dash snapped. He glanced over to Danny, whose face had broken out into a full grin. âYeah, laugh it up why donât you!â
Danny just tapped his legs as a response.
Kwan roared in laughter and all but fell off of his chair.
âOh, shut up!â
---
âWe want in,â a voice said from above him.
Dash stuffed his notebook into his backpack, not even bothering to glance up at the speaker. âWhat are you talking about?â
âWe know youâve been doing homework with Danny after school, and we want to join.â
Dash sighed and threw his bag over his shoulder. He stood, facing Manson in all her glory. Though her outfit didnât scream quite as goth as it had when they were Freshmen, she still had the same self-righteous stance that had always irritated Dash.
âOkay?â Dash responded. âAnd who is âweâ?â
âTucker and I. You know, Dannyâs best friends? Have been since elementary school? The two people who have actually been there for him this whole time? Ring a bell?â
Dash rolled his eyes. âYeah, Iâm leaving. Study with him on your own time.â
He turned to walk away, but she grabbed his arm, pulling him back. âWait. Sorry, justââ She paused, dropping her arm back to her side, and Dash watched as a myriad of emotions flickered through her expression. Her gaze dropped to the floor, and cracks of insecurity seeped through her features. âSorry. Let me start over.â
He straightened back up. âIâm listening.â
She took a deep breath. When she started, her voice was quiet but steady. âI get why Lancer asked you and Kwan to work with him. I do, I get it. But Tucker and I are his best friends. And you know how he is right now. Those devices are...theyâre messing with his head. I know they are.â Her gaze flickered up at Dash, and she looked scared. âIt hurts seeing him like this, you know?â
âYeah, I know,â Dash said. âBut I donât see what this has to do with our study sessions.â
âHe just seems happier now since he started. He seems better.â
Dash blinked. Whatever he was expecting her to say, that definitely wasnât it.
Manson hugged herself, her shoulders hunching. She looked...small. Fragile. As if the slightest breeze would topple her over.Â
This wasnât like her.
âWhatever you guys have been doing, itâs working. Heâs getting better. I donât know, he just seems more present now. And...it hurts that I havenât been there during this. You know, itâs been months since Iâve heard his voice. Not since before he got captured, since before those evil devices were forced on him. I know theyâre preparing for a court case to get them removed, and I know thereâs a chance heâll get better again, but I justâŚâ
âYou miss him,â Dash said, surprising himself.Â
âYeah. I do.â
Dash sighed. âI donât know how I can help with this.â
âJust give us a chance? Please. Just let us tag along, even if itâs only for a few days a week. We wonât interfere with the tutoring, we just want to be there.â
He stared at her silently, studying her face under her bangs.Â
The past year had been hard on her, that much was obvious. And Dash, as unobservant and bullheaded as he was, could see the dark circles under her eyes, her blotchy skin, her chapped lips.
The way she stood there before him, a person who she would never have been caught dead being friendly with, defeated and all but begging for help.
Dash wasnât selfless. He wasnât altruistic.
He was just a dumb jock.
But in that moment, as he scrutinized the way her hands fidgeted and her lower lip wobbled, he couldnât help but feel her sadness, her regret.
It was painful to watch.
âOkay.â He turned away. âWe meet at Kwanâs at four. Iâll see you both there.â

Casper Highâs School Colors
I have some thoughtsÂ
Mainly because Iâm rather torn as far as my actual opinion goes. I donât think anyone other than me cares about their school colors but I care so like, here we go
Casper highâs school colors are super boring and generic and lame. My high school had the exact same colors, as did this high school I lived by but didn't go to, and also the Wildcats from high school musical, and like every single generic high school Ever. And it was also the colors of the rec soccer club I was in from like 4 years old to 16. And its lame. Red and White?? Thatâs so boring!! Theyâre the Ravens! Ravens arenât red and white??
My high school was the Cardinals so like whatever sure, the high school I lived by was the scots so sure, my rec soccer club didn't have a mascot but my team specifically was the Red Hot Cheetahs so, perfect. All these things? Fine. Red and White works perfectly fine whatever. BUT THE RAVENS??? bad. Absolutely not. If youâre gonna have a Raven at least give it some good dramatic colors to go along side it.
On the other hand, the fact that Red and White is just such an easy and generic color scheme for schools could be fun if the whole Amity Park: A Nice Place to Live was played up a tad more? like oh-ho look at us! Weâre totally normal, no ghosts here! Everything is safe and there is no war in ba-sing-se.
So Like it kinda adds to the idea that Amity itself was really boring and normal before the ghost thing happened, but like...... I think itâd just be more fun if they had just gone ham and made the school colors Purple and dark grey or something.
Also the sign âAmity Park: A Nice Place to Liveâ? I cannot look at it without thinking about how Christmas-y it looks. From the font to color choices. Just a Bad Move.
#danny phantom#sorry i just needed to get that off my chest#also like i get it contrast is fun whatever but NEON GREEN???#IN all the backgrounds whenever Danny is just in fenton form??#Thanks I hate it#its visually striking which is okay cool#but like reinterpreting that into my own style is Bullshit and i hate it#The ghosts are all so colorful and bright itd be fun if the regular human world was really dull and boring color wise#or vise versa? Make the ghosts less saturated and have the human world look really bright and pretty?

I hope this email does not come across as too strange, but before about 45 minutes ago, I had never heard of you. I was searching Pandora for some traditional Celtic music to play as a background to a personal spring/renewal ritual I felt compelled to do on this cool California night. When I happened upon your Podcast #196, I immediately knew I had my background music. I thought your talking would be a distraction, but it was not at all, like an extension of the music of the ancestors.
I won't go into detail about my ritual tonight, other than to say this ritual marks the end of a very long period of trial and pain in one of my life's dark valleys, but the thing about valleys is that there are always the hills beyond to climb if you can just keep walking. I did, and tonight is like a new birth from the cauldron of the Cailleach. I have not cut my hair in ten years until tonight (by no means short, but shorter), a show of faith in renewed growth, and to offer a red - blonde lock as tribute to the ancestors. I don't know much about you or what your spirituality may be, but I felt the need to thank you for being with me on this small milestone in my journey. I look forward to getting to know you better through your work. And thank you. Blessings of the Tuatha de,â

Braveheart (1995)
The summer of 1995 provided moviegoing audiences with a third Die Hard movie, Casper, batnipples, Disneyâs problematic Pocahontas, Apollo 13, Waterworld, and one of the most understanding childrenâs films of all time in Babe. That is a busy summer to say the least. Amid that clutter, one of the most successful movies of that period could not possibly have been made now, let alone find the audience it did twenty-three years ago. Released by Paramount in North America and 20th Century Fox internationally, that film is Mel Gibsonâs Braveheart, a thirteenth-century war epic about Scottish knight William Wallace (played by Gibson) taking arms against King Edward I of England in the First War of Scottish Independence. Braveheart was Gibsonâs second directorial work after more than a decade as a figurehead for 1980s Australian cinema and presence in the Lethal Weapon series. This is a visually striking, technically accomplished film rife with homophobia, misogyny, and historical howlers that continues to sharply polarize viewers about its cinematic merits. Through the fires of these controversies, the extremely violent Braveheart has bludgeoned its way to becoming an iconic fixture of 1990s Hollywood.
It is 1280 in Scotland. As a child, William Wallace survives King Edward âLongshanksâ (Patrick McGoohan) invasion of Scotland. Following Scottish defeat, Wallace is taken on a European journey by his uncle Argyle (Brian Cox). Years later, Wallace (Gibson as an adult; James Robinson as a child) will return to his village and marry childhood friend Murron MacClannough (Catherine McCormack as an adult; Mhari Calvey as a child). But Longshanks has granted his English nobles in Scotland right of the first night, and Wallaceâs successful attempt to save Murron from rape eventually ends in her execution. Enraged, Wallace â assisted by his fellow villagers â massacres the English forces sent to his hometown and drives the remaining English military from Scotland. Longshanks will not take military defeat without response, ordering Prince Edward (Peter Hanly) to quash the rebellion. War and royal intrigue breaks out, leading to Edwardâs wife, Isabella of France (Sophie Marceau), being sent to negotiate with Wallace and the two falling for each other far too quickly.
With that plot in mind, viewers should understand that the only historically accurate aspects of Braveheart are the names of the historical figures involved and place names â really, thatâs it. The Scots wear kilts, despite the fact kilts would not be invented for another several hundred years. If one wants to understand the First Scottish War for Independence and the history surrounding this era, read a book instead. Screenwriter Randall Wallace admitted that his script was based less on history than on the epic poem The Actes and Deidis of the Illustre and Vallyeant Campioun Schir William Wallace, written by Blind Harry in the fifteenth century.
In its medieval swordplay, Braveheart has more to do with Spartacus (1960) than anything in a 1930s-40s 20th Century Fox or Warner Bros. swashbuckler. The filmâs enormous battle scenes â shot in Ireland with over 1,500 members of the Irish Army Reserve participating on both sides of this cinematic conflict â are excellent collaborations in deploying men on foot and horseback smashing into each other on a grassy plain with a frantic camera attempting to make sense of the scrum. The use of 200-pound mechanical horses running on nitrogen cylinders even fooled an animal welfare organization that decided to investigate the film because of the effectâs realism. When not indulging in ill-advised slow-motion, these battles, perhaps too frequently placed into the film to the point they becoming fatiguing, are spectacular in their choreography. The collaborative effort between Gibson, cinematographer John Toll (1994â˛s Legends of the Fall, 1998â˛s The Thin Red Line), editor Steven Rosenblum (1989â˛s Glory, Legends of the Fall) and second unit crew members contributes to a blood-soaked, crashing symphony of mangled limbs and human brutality that no other film depicting medieval warfare has since equaled â especially the Battle of Stirling Bridge, which is horrifying in its impact despite the absence of the crucial, eponymous bridge. Many films since Braveheart portraying contemporary war likewise pale in comparison.
Braveheart would be a disastrous film without John Tollâs cinematography, whether in action sequences or peaceful moments. The use of natural lighting and the on-location shooting in Ireland and Scotland appeals to Tollâs strengths for exterior shots, lending Braveheart a near-mythical angle amid large landscape shots blessed with eerie cloud covers and looming, verdant mountains. Toll makes Scotland a place of dreams â especially in the blue of twilight when the sunâs reds have retreated westward, welcoming the cool and comfort of the evening. This suits the film, as Gibson is not filming a historical drama. No computerized flourishes or too many swooping helicopter-aided vistas pry the viewer from the film. Tollâs camera for these landscapes and shots of the village (reportedly built by the production crew to Tollâs specifications) remain still or are gently heightened or lowered by crane shots. Close-ups are mercifully spare, reserved almost entirely for violent scenes.
The word âfreedomâ is tossed around with such promiscuity and depthlessness that Braveheartâs 178 minutes cannot be justified. Wallaceâs screenplay touches lightly on the eraâs politics, Wallaceâs love life, and the ideas why Scotland should be independent from England. Political philosophy this is not. Look elsewhere for films of military leaders with a wracked conscience, psychologically impacted by the slaughter they have initiated. Instead, we are presented with anachronistic dialogue like this:Â
WILLIAM WALLACE: Before we let you leave, your commander must cross that field, present himself before this army, put his head between his legs, and kiss his own arse.
Sure, dude. If possible, maybe that commander might have a future as a contortionist.
Braveheart presents William Wallace as a man on a revenge-fueled mission who will consider all possible means to liberate his people â he has an irreverent sense of humor that makes given scenes a tonal mishmash. Wallaceâs romantic interludes with Murron and Isabella? Gibson, McCormack, and Marceau, respectively, are all unconvincing â despite an enormous assist from Toll in these passionate scenes.
Casual homophobia is directed toward Prince Edward (later King Edward II), the son of Edward Longshanks (Edward I; who was a bellicose monarch, but becomes a cartoonish archetype in this film). Prince Edward is depicted as effeminate and gay, and his lover Philip (Stephen Billington) is killed by defenestration. The film further compounds this depiction by associating the Princeâs homosexuality to his ineffectual character â Longshanks constantly chastises his sonâs lack of masculinity and Princess Isabella also disapproves of her husband for those qualities. This is not to say homophobia did not exist in the late thirteenth century, but that Gibson and Wallace are doubling down on the Prince, making him a punchline puppet of a leader because of who he is. Aggressive masculinity and sexual expressions inundate the battle scenes, too â swinging swords should be interpreted as one might think.
Women have almost zero agency in Braveheart, as they are depicted as sexual vessels to remain pure and chaste while the men fraternize and fornicate all they wish. Wallaceâs campaign of violence begins not because the English lords have invoked right of the first night (prima noctis) for other women, but because prima noctis has been invoked for Murron (whose sexual faithfulness is idealized after her death in a pair of visions Wallace â who, by sleeping with Isabella, does not return that same faith â has). One of the few topics that women speak of throughout the film is sexual interest/satisfaction or lack thereof â Isabellaâs only purpose in the film is to bang Wallace so that she can deliver an inflammatory piece of news to Longshanks on his deathbed.
Other than Toll, another craftsperson showcases their mastery in this film. That master is composer James Horner (Glory, 1997â˛s Titanic). 1995 proved to be a career year for Horner, having composed the scores for Apollo 13, Balto, and Casper. His second-best score of the year behind Apollo 13, Braveheartâs score is mostly devoid of the wanking masculinity described above, combining cultural elements that might seem inappropriate for a film about Scottish warriors â given the use of Japanese woodwinds in Legends of the Fall (a generational epic drama about a Montana ranching family), Hornerâs instrumental appropriation knows no bounds, for good and ill. Along with the requisite bagpipes (rather than the Great Highland bagpipes that are generally associated to be âbagpipesâ, Horner utilizes Uilleann pipes â Irish in origin, Uilleann pipes are softer and considered to produce a less harsh sound than Great Highland Bagpipes), this heavily orchestral score also benefits from a boysâ choir reminiscent of Casper, Hornerâs affinity for Irish music, and quena (an Andean flute) for âThe Secret Weddingâ.
Three major motifs exist in Hornerâs score: for Wallace, Murron, and Isabella. Wallaceâs motif is first in the main title through the Uilleann pipes and will be the most-repeated theme in the film, fragmented up by percussion in the battle scenes, and often accompanied by strings in melodic unison (most heroically at 6:05 in âFreedom/The Execution Bannockburnâ). Murronâs motif assumes melodramatic, (and very quickly afterwards) tragic connotations upon its most memorable appearance on quena in âThe Secret Weddingâ, chorally reprised at 3:10 in the âEnd Creditsâ. Dominating the final third of the film is Isabellaâs motif, best outlined in âFor the Love of a Princessâ by the entire orchestra, and containing echoes of âThe Ludlowsâ from Legends of the Fall. Credit the London Symphony Orchestra for providing a gorgeous recording, even if Hornerâs score to Braveheart is not the most musically interesting effort of his career.
Producers Bruce Davey (Gibsonâs longtime producer) and Alan Ladd, Jr. (son of legendary Paramount contracted actor Alan Ladd) navigated numerous obstacles at 20th Century Fox and Paramount to complete the film. This enormous, nearly three-hour production of a time period unfamiliar to North American moviegoers could not be produced at this scope today. A 2018 Braveheart would require even more major studios from various nations to finance the project, as epic films have all but disappeared from the multiplex because of their forbidding costs and lack of action star/superhero connections. Gibsonâs ambition is staggering here. Yet Braveheart is let down by Gibsonâs hypermasculinity and homophobia â reflective of his troublesome political dimensions.
The filmâs cultural importance when it was released is unquestionable, but it remains to be seen how time will treat Gibsonâs directorial breakout work. By being released in the mid-1990s, it is among the last Hollywood epic films largely untouched by excessive CGI â the effects are gruesome because they are practical. Though the characterizations are simplistic, Braveheart is an effective character piece for many, if not for this writer. Caught between the praises of fanboys of a certain demographic and those who loathe Gibson and/or Braveheart, I can neither adulate nor dismiss this movie outright. Bring on the insults on my manhood, but say it with a Scottish accent, would you kindly?

Your Woman Crush for this Week is Christina Ricci!
The 38 year old actress was born in Santa Monica, California before moving to Montclair, New Jersey.  Born to a mostly Irish Lawyer and a mostly Irish real estate agent, Ricci has revealed despite her last name that sheâs mostly âScots-Irishâ. While living in Jersey she went to multiple different schools before eventually being discovered in a school play.
She began appearing in parody commercials for Saturday night Live, before moving on to make her big screen debut in âMermaidsâ as Cherâs on screen daughter. The following year sheâd land the role of a lifetime as she starred as Wednesday Addams in the âAddams Familyâ film and itâs sequel. She became a bit of a goth-icon for her monotone delivery and dark sense of humor. And literally every other sense of emotion.
Following this, she rode the wave of her new found supernatural based following to 1995â˛s 'Casperâ where she starred opposite Bill Pullman. She then went on to star in âNow and Thenâ which got rave reviews at the time. Following that she and Doug E. Doug starred in âThat Darn Catâ which got a lot of play on cable thanks to the Disney Channel.Â
Following that she started upping the risque quotient by appearing in âBuffalo â66ⲠâPeckerâ and âThe Opposite Sexâ. For her role in the âThe Opposite Sexâ she landed two Golden Globe nominations and was inline for an Oscar Nomination but was snubbed. Many critics still feel itâs one of the worst of all time. She back to her horror roots in âCursedâ but after that sheâd switch up and go more main stream again appearing in âSpeed Racerâ, âAlpha and Omegaâ and âSmurfs 2âł. However, not before landing in âBlack Snake Moanâ, which received strong reviews but was a hotly debated film for months.
In more recent years sheâs switched gears to focus on television, appearing in the one season wonder âPan Amâ, then in Lifetimeâs original movie âLizzie Borden Took an Axâ and itâs sister series, âThe Lizzie Borden Chroniclesâ. Sheâs also landed more voice work for âTeen Titans: The Judas Contractâ. She has projects coming though, donât worry about that. Sheâs starring in âDistortedâ and will appear in 2019â˛s âFaraway Eyesâ. Sheâs incredibly beautiful, extremely talented and an icon all to her own. So for all these reasons and more, sheâs your Woman Crush for this Week.

ATP Cup: Great Britain lose to Bulgaria after Jamie Murray and Joe Salisbury defeat
New Post has been published on https://thebiafrastar.com/atp-cup-great-britain-lose-to-bulgaria-after-jamie-murray-and-joe-salisbury-defeat/
ATP Cup: Great Britain lose to Bulgaria after Jamie Murray and Joe Salisbury defeat
Great Britainâs Joe Salisbury and Jamie Murray congratulate Bulgariaâs Grigor Dimitrov and Alexandar Lazarov after the dramatic defeat
Britain lost their opening ATP Cup tie after Jamie Murray and Joe Salisbury were beaten in a thrilling match ending at 2:47am local time in Sydney.
With the tie with Bulgaria locked at 1-1 after the singles, Salisbury and Murray lost 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (2-7) 11-9 to Grigor Dimitrov and Alexandar Lazarov.
The Britons were unable to convert two match points in the match tie-break.
Britain started the inaugural event with Cameron Norrieâs win before Dan Evans lost to Dimitrov in the singles.
Norrie gave his side a 1-0 lead in the tie with a 6-2 3-6 6-2 victory over world number 423 Dimitar Kuzmanov, but Bulgaria levelled when US Open semi-finalist Dimitrov beat Evans 6-2 4-6 6-1 to set up the deciding doubles rubber.
That left Britainâs fate in the hands of Murray and Salisbury, playing together for the first time as the nationâs highest ranked doubles players.
But they were edged out in a tense finale to leave Britain, without the injured Andy Murray, needing to beat Belgium on Sunday to stand any chance of avoiding an early exit from the new 24-team tournament.
After the Bulgarian pair edged a tight first set, Murray and Salisbury broke early in the second set and maintained their slender advantage until the latter stages when Dimitrov and Lazarov swung momentum back in their favour.
Murray was unable to serve out the set at 5-4 as Bulgaria took their first break point since the third game of the match to level at 5-5.
Like the opener, it also needed a tie-break to separate the teams. But this time it was Britain who dominated, a beautiful lob by Salisbury teeing up four set points of which they needed just one when Dimitrov planted a volley wide.
That meant a first-to-10 match tie-break started about 2:30am at a sparsely-populated Ken Rosewall Arena, with Britain edging 4-2 ahead after a rare double fault from Dimitrov.
The mistake from former world number three Dimitrov did not prove costly, however, as the inspired Bulgarians fought back to 8-7 before showing more resilience to save the two match points.
Lazarov, ranked 477th in the doubles and outside the top 500 in the singles, put away a volley for 10-9 to tee up their first match point, which they took when he hit a perfect inside-out forehand down the line.
Seeing the impact of Australian bushfires is âtoughâ, says tearful Kyrgios
What is the ATP Cup?
If it had not been for Andy Murrayâs late decision to use his protected world ranking of two, Great Britain might not have qualified for the inaugural event because their other players may not have been ranked high enough.
But then the 32-year-old Scot, who only had career-saving hip surgery last January, announced on Saturday he would not play after âa setbackâ with the pelvic injury he has been nursing since the Davis Cup finals in November. James Ward was called up in his place.
Norrie, ranked 53rd in the world, was far from his best against the lower-ranked Kuzmanov, but eventually had enough quality to come through by converting his sixth break point of the match to win in almost two hours.
Murrayâs absence means Evans, the world number 42, is Britainâs leading player and that pitted him against former world number three Dimitrov.
After a confident opening set where he broke serve three times, Evans lost his way in the second and allowed Dimitrov to level with a crucial break in what proved to be the final game of the set.
From that point Dimitrov took control and clinched victory in two hours and 16 minutes at about 12:10am local time, meaning the doubles rubber would not start until about 1am.
Britain are being led by captain Tim Henman, the former world number four and four-time Wimbledon semi-finalist, at the ATP Cup
What else happened on the opening day?
The 24-nation event features six groups of four teams, who each play three round-robin ties. The ties â comprising two singles matches and one doubles â are best of three.
The six group winners, plus the best two runners-up, will progress to the quarter-finals.
Australiatook an unassailable 2-0 lead over Group F rivalsGermanyafter wins for Nick Kyrgios, who broke into tears when speaking about the wild bushfires across Australia after the match, and Alex de Minaur.
Kyrgios won 6-4 7-6 (7-4) against Jan-Lennard Struff before 20-year-old De Minaur fought back from a set and a break down to beat world number seven Alexander Zverev 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-2.
The hosts completed a 3-0 win when John Peers and Chris Guccione won 6-3 6-4 against French Open menâs doubles champions Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies.
In the same group,CanadaâsFelix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov led their nation, who were runners-up at the Davis Cup finals in November, to a 3-0 win overGreece.
Norwayearned a shock win over theUnited Statesin Group D. Talented 21-year-old Casper Ruud led them to victory by beating big-serving John Isner in three sets.
The Americans had led through Taylor Fritzâs straight-set win over Viktor Durasovic but Ruud saved two match points before levelling the tie with a 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (12-10) 7-5 win over the world number 19 in two hours and 43 minutes.
Ruud then teamed up with Durasovic to beat Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek and spark jubilant celebrations from the Norway squad.
In Britainâs Group C,Belgiumeased to a 3-0 victory overMoldova, who received an apology after the wrong anthem was played before their tie.
