THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU WROTE ABOUT WICKED. I JUST FINISHED READING IT LAST NIGHT AND OH MY GOD. It was easily in the top 3 best-written books I have ever read, Maguire's wordsmithing is fucking unbelievably beautiful. I haven't seen the musical (and tbh I don't care to based on what I've heard about how different it is) but I def have listened to no good deed at least 20 times in the past 24 hours

THANKS FOR LOVING IT. No, seriously, I have such a deep attachment to this book and this author that it makes me very happy to hear someone read it after my recommendation and enjoyed it.

Gregory Maguire is beautiful. He has such a way with words. He’s the only author I buy at face-value. He publishes a new book? I buy it. I don’t even need to know what it’s about. After I read Son of a Witch, I literally just went to a bookstore and bought all the books with his name on them and read them.

I recently realized why exactly I love him so much, because my all-time favorite books are the Alice in Wonderland books by Lewis Carroll. And Gregory Maguire is essentially a modern Lewis Carroll. The phrasings, the thought-patterns, the twisted fantasy plots.

Which, by the way, if you like Alice in Wonderland, Maguire wrote a third book for the series for the 150th anniversary of the original. And style-wise you really can’t tell that this is a different author, going at it 150 years later.

But you should really read Son of a Witch first. Liir’s story is absolutely fascinating - also, gay dragon riders.

And I can only recommend the musical, even though it has barely anything to do with the books, fascinatingly enough the songs all really hit the right notes. I saw it twice; once in Germany and once in England.
