with daichi and you making small talk, the walk to coach ukai’s store was comfortable. it didn’t feel forced, which is something you liked. the gaps of silence were accepted between the both of you and it felt as though the both of you agreed upon it.

“so, what do you need?” daichi’s voice broke your train of thought.

“pretty much everything, to be honest.” you replied, being sincere in your needs.

you explained to him that both of your parents worked a lot, and they travelled constantly. this left you to fend for yourself at home. you were in charge of your own cooking and cleaning.

“doesn’t it get lonely?” daichi asked, genuine curiosity etched all over his face.

“well, it does.” you started before greeting coach ukai once you’ve reached the store. “sometimes, i wonder why i have to move around with them when they don’t even come home.” 

you stopped to pick up a basket but daichi beat you to it and ushered you towards the aisles.

“b-but i’ve gotten used to it though!” you quickly added, not wanting to put a damper onto the mood.

“if you want some company, you can come over!” daichi offered. “pretty sure my mom wouldn’t mind and my siblings can bother someone else for once.”

“i wouldn’t want to bother you and your family.” you replied, while looking at the aisles, going through your mental checklist of what you need. you were sure that he was just being nice.

“who said you would be a bother?” he added. “i promise you won’t be one.”

daichi held out his hand in front of you, with his pinky finger out. 

“holy shit, you make pinky promises?” you asked him, visibly excited.

“what do you think?” he shook his hand, trying to bring attention to it. “don’t leave me hanging.”

you finally linked up your pinky with his and the both of you mirrored the widest smiles.

you laughed as you kept your phone in your pocket, making daichi look at you with an eyebrow cocked.

“kuroo asked if it was a date.” you looked back at him, trying to play it cool.

daichi broke the eye contact, laughing while shaking his head.

“nope.” your heart sunk a bit. “i’ll take you on a proper date.”

your eyes widened and you sat up straight, turning your head towards daichi.

“what? i don’t think it’s a surprise i’m interested in you.” he said, nonchalantly as if it didn’t make your heart flutter at the idea of him liking you back.

the idea of liking someone was still foreign to you. but you knew that you enjoyed talking to him. you enjoyed being around him. that's a start, right?

“a-are you asking me out?” you stuttered.

“will you go out with me?” daichi rolled his eyes, feigning annoyance as he slipped out a chuckle.

“yeah,” you nodded, giving him a huge smile. “i’d like that.”

daichi was trying his best to calm his nerves. he had this elaborate plan to ask you to be his girlfriend and he had no other choice but to ask kuroo for help. which led to him involving kenma and yaku, not that he minded.

daichi grabbed a bunch of bags and he headed straight to the door. he wasn’t afraid that you would see him, knowing that you left a while ago to meet your friends at the train station. he opened the door and jumped back to see sugawara standing there with a smug smile on his face.

“did you think i wouldn’t find out?” sugawara teased daichi, making daichi’s face go red.

sugawara grabbed some bags out of daichi’s hands, quickly walked out and started making digs at daichi for trying to keep this plan of his a secret.

after ten minutes of sugawara’s constant teasing, they made it to the park. daichi pointed out an area near the pond, telling sugawara to set up the mat there. as they were setting up, daichi’s thoughts constantly went back and forth.

he was confident that you liked him back, but what if he read the signals wrong? but you would’ve told him to stop if you were uncomfortable, right? but what if you didn’t feel safe to tell him that? your friends wouldn’t have helped if you didn’t like him that way, right?

“oi, stop overthinking.” sugawara threw a crumpled receipt to his head, chuckling at the worry at his best friend’s face. “she’ll say yes.”

daichi hoped the three idiots didn’t fuck up the plan.

“are you going to murder me?” you asked yaku as he dragged your arm to follow him. “kenma, please help me.”

“don’t fight me.” yaku tugged on your hand, making you stumble into him. “you owe me big time.”

you stared at kuroo, trying to look for clarity but all he did was shake his head and sigh before going back to his phone. kenma had a slight smile as he tapped away on his phone and you sighed loudly, admitting defeat as yaku led the way. you had no idea what was going on, and your friends weren’t going to tell you anything so you decided to just resign to your fate.

yaku suddenly stopped walking, making you stumble into him again. you were about to curse him out when kuroo slipped a blindfold on you.

“i’m wearing makeup you fucker.” you attempted to raise your arms to remove the blindfold but yaku grabbed both of your arms before you could remove it.

“shut the fuck up and follow me.” yaku placed your hands on his shoulders and you felt kuroo’s hands on your shoulders. you could only imagine how stupid the three of you looked as you cautiously followed yaku. for all you know, he could lead you into a ditch and that would be the end of your life.

as fast as it started, you were suddenly standing alone.

“oi, don’t leave me alone.” you whined at the loss of your guides. “i’m going to take the blindfold off. it’s your fault yaku.”

your eyes fluttered, adjusting to the environment around you. you looked around to see kuroo, yaku and sugawara standing off to the side. kenma was holding his phone horizontally, taking a video of what’s happening. sugawara gave you a little wave and pointed to the other side.

you turned and to your surprise, daichi was standing there with a bouquet of flowers. he stood in front of the mat he set up, smiling as you finally registered what was going on.

“hey there cutie.” daichi started, slowly walking over to you. “wanna have a picnic?”

you smiled while nodding furiously, following daichi over to the picnic mat.

“wait,” you stopped, making daichi pause. “so they’ll just be watching us?”

“don’t worry,” daichi chuckled, shaking his head. “i prepared an extra mat over there so they can have their own picnic.”

you and daichi finally sat down, making yourselves comfortable. you felt your heart flutter as you looked around the mat, realizing the effort daichi put in for this. you noticed a letter addressed to you, making you pick it up and shaking it in daichi’s direction.

“read it.” daichi instructed, biting his lips out of nervousness.

“ever since the day you ran into me, you’ve been on my mind. i enjoyed every single conversation with you, and i find myself looking forward to the next one we’ll have. the hours i spend with you go by the fastest but they are the hours i look forward to the most. so, can i ask you a question?”

“what do you want to ask, daichi?” you stared into his eyes, not wanting to break eye contact first.

“will you be my girlfriend?”

⟡ daichi didn't expect kuroo to bring yaku and kenma along, that's why there's only one pizza

⟡ daichi asked suga how he knew and suga told him that he was literally watching them since day one and it's rude to not include him in this milestone (daichi chucked a strawberry at his head)

⟡ kenma sent the video to y/n and she literally yapped about how sweet the entire thing was for an hour straight and kenma actually muted her notifications

laughing at your replies, daichi made his way to his living room to make sure things were in order before he left the house. being the oldest made him feel as though he has to have the responsibility to make his mum’s life easier. looking around as he put his bag on the dining chair, he realized two pieces of milk bread on the table. he grabbed both pieces and put them into his bag.

he took a cup of water, sitting down at the dining table with the extra minutes he had waiting for you. daichi sawamura is the type of person to analyze and think.

it isn’t weird for him to go to school with you, right? you are neighbours. it shouldn���t be weird.

people walk to school together all the time. daichi assured himself that it was all in his head and shook it off. he can’t make something weird out of something normal.

daichi decided to wait in front of his own house, not wanting to rush you.

“good morning daichi!”

he turned around to see you running towards him, quickly covering that short distance.

“morning!” daichi waved. “please slow down, y/n.”

daichi thought you looked cute as you smiled sheepishly. daichi started walking and you mentioned how you woke up late and you were rushing the whole morning.

“yeah, pretty much gathered that from your texts.” he chuckled and your face reddened.

you quickly took out your phone from your pocket, pulling up the text conversation while feeling flustered.

you groaned and apologized to daichi, sliding in how embarrassing it was for you.

daichi waved you off and said it was okay while grabbing the two milk bread packets he had from his bag.

“i’m pretty sure you didn’t have breakfast?” he offered you one.

you felt like you were blessed that morning. how can a man look cute and be this kind?

“thank you so much.” you held the bread close to your face, the smell of it making your stomach grumble. “i really appreciate it!”

daichi’s cheeks blushed and he shook his head, not wanting you to see it.

“eat up, okay?”

the weekend took its own sweet time to come. you were anxious to say the least. this was the very first boy that wanted to bring you out on a date. yes, you brought kenma, kuroo and yaku over before but your parents knew that they were your bestest friends. but, this was different.

your parents came back home on friday night. you welcomed them at the door, hugging and taking their bags from their tired arms that drove from city to city.

“daichi wants to come over tomorrow.” you warned, not wanting to have his appearance at the door startle them.

“sure!” your dad nodded. “he’s a good kid.”

“he said he wanted to ask something.” you looked away, not wanting them to probe any further.

your dad cocked his eyebrow, sharing a knowing look with your mom as she let out a chuckle.

they rushed you off to bed, not wanting to keep you up any longer.

three firm knocks filled the silence of your home. that simple act made your heart race. what if your parents said no? you shook that thought out of your head, not wanting to manifest that reality.

“h-hi!” daichi waved, holding a bag of fruits in his other hand.

you let him in, calling out to your parents about his arrival.

“hello! thank you so much for letting me come over!” daichi held out the bag of fruits, bowing slightly. “here’s a little something and my mom sends her regards.”

your mother graciously accepted the fruits and thanked him profusely, mentioning how she should go spend some time with his mother.

“so,” your dad started after ushering daichi to have a seat, “y/n told me that you wanted to ask something?”

daichi sat even straighter as the tip of your ears reddened. it was happening.

“actually, i wanted to ask for permission.” daichi smiled, “i want to bring y/n out for a date.”

you couldn’t bring yourself to look at your parents, deciding your lap was a better option and started fiddling with your fingers. your heart was threatening to leap out of your chest.

your dad looked at your mom cheekily, raising both of his eyebrows as if saying that he was right all along. your mom shook her head at his behaviour, then looked at daichi.

“we’re okay with you bringing her out. but,” your mom paused, making your stomach squeeze. “it’s up to her if she wants to go.”

your head popped up, not expecting that answer. not that you knew what they were going to say in the first place. daichi turned to you, his brown eyes sparkled with hope.

you nodded, giving him a shy smile. you made eye contact with your mom and dad, silently thanking them.

“why don’t you bring her out for lunch now?” your dad suggested. “y’all can do whatever kids do and come back here for dinner with us.”

daichi agreed with the idea and you quickly ran to your room, rummaging through your closet for an outfit. you didn’t want to seem like you were trying too hard but you didn’t want to look like you didn’t try at all. after what it felt like years, you managed to put together a decent outfit and went to the living room to bid goodbye to your parents.

“do you need us to grab anything for dinner later?” you heard daichi ask as you walked in.

your mom shook her head, telling him not to worry about it and asking him to just have fun today.

daichi sensed you walked in and turned around, eyeing your outfit. he let out a tiny ‘wow’ and thanked your parents once again. the both of them embarrassingly rushed the both of you out, making them look more excited than you and daichi were.

“you look extra pretty, ya know?” daichi smirked and you playfully bumped his shoulder in response.

little did you know, your parents were gossiping as if they were back in high school.

“finally!” your dad exclaimed, hugging your mother. “she’s on her first date!”
