“so are you gonna come to the game? lacey mentioned she talked to you about it” caroline says as she swings the plastic chair around so it’s backwards.

she moves your sprawled out notes into a neat pile and folds her arms over the back of the chair, ducks her head, and looks at you. you spare her a side glance and shrug. lacey had indeed asked you about going to their first home game of the season, but you wanted to get ahead of your studies to save stress later on and you couldn’t do that if you were distracted. like you’re beginning to be now.

kk peers over your notes, running her finger along the edge of the leaflet of paper “you’ve got really neat handwriting. mine sometimes looks like chicken scratch” she says as she continues to read “i don’t know how you can even study this stuff, i feel like i don’t know what half of these words mean”

you crack a smile but continue re-writing what you’re revising, almost paying caroline no attention.

the two of you weren’t friends, per say, but you were friendly. lacey was your mutual ground and the two of you would only really interact if she was your buffer because you were so painfully shy and kk just… wasn’t. she was outgoing and confident in social situations, finding it easy to slide into conversation with the people around her. you, on the other hand, tended to find yourself hiding behind your friends and their habit of engaging in loud conversation. it allowed you to fade into the background and merely listen.

but now, the hockey player has seemingly set out on a mission to change that.

“you don’t talk much, do you?” she asks again, quieter this time, when she remembers that it’s not just you two in the common area of the library.

you shrug “i prefer to listen” you answer quietly as you fiddle with the cap of your pen.

kk smiles “so you’d seriously sit here and listen to me talk whilst you study?”

“if you had planned to sit here and watch me study, then yeah. i guess”

her eyes narrow and a moment passes where neither of you speak. you feel hot under her gaze and hope to god that your face isn’t as red as it feels right now.

“i hadn’t planned too. but if you’re offering, i’m not opposed” she says lowly as she leans into your personal space.

“i didn’t offer anything. you’re the one that sat down” you point at her. she holds her hands up in defence but settles back over the chair, now quiet as you continue with your studies.

you get a good five minutes of quiet before she speaks up again.

the olympian kisses her teeth “i still think you should come to the game”

“i don’t even know the rules of hockey” you answer, not looking up from your page.

“i’ll teach you! or lacey, if that’s better”

you put down your pen and rest your chin on your hand “you aren’t going to let up until i agree to go, are you?”

caroline shakes her head no and shows you a cheeky grin “no probably not”

sighing, you relent “fine” you hold a finger up just as she looks like she’s about to accidentally cheer in a quiet library “but you have to leave me alone for the rest of today. if i’m going to go then i really need to get this finished”

in one swift motion, she stands and places the chair the right way around. she salutes you “i’ll see you there”

you had spent the summer torn between telling your girlfriend about your tongue piercing and letting her find out when you got back to school. caroline had spent all summer in new hampshire with her family while you were studying abroad. the extra semester of school was just enough to ensure that you'd be graduating with caroline instead of having to wait to complete your degree.

as important as all of that was, you hadn't gotten a chance to say anything. caroline was on the couch when you entered your on-campus apartment. you had just gone months without seeing each other, and all you wanted was to be in her arms again. caroline had similar desires, even if hers ultimately led to you being pinned beneath her on the couch while she kissed your neck.

"kk, wait," you tried to tell her. caroline outwardly groaned when you told her to wait and dropped her head to rest against your shoulder. "i missed you."

"i missed you too. that's why i'm trying to kiss you." caroline pouted. you rolled your eyes at her, but pulled her in for a kiss anyway. you kept your mouth closed at first, but caroline's tongue pried past your lips anyway. almost immediately, she paused and drew back in shock. "what is that?"

"what is what?" caroline was peering into your mouth as you spoke. the flash of metal did not go unnoticed. she looked like she was about to grab your tongue with her hands when you just stuck it out instead.

"is that new?" caroline asked. you nodded as you put your tongue back in your mouth. "c-can we try something a little different? i swear that i will make it up to you tenfold."

"anything for you if you ask nicely," you told her. caroline got visibly excited as she got off of the couch completely. "where are you going?"

"bedroom, come on. oh fuck it, i'll just carry you." that was the only warning you got before caroline was throwing you over her shoulder.

you were sitting on your couch, not doing much of anything, you phone starts ringing, it’s kk.

you answer her, “hiii baby” kk says over the phone, sounding excited. “hiii kk, you sound excited?”

“uh yeah- do you think you can be ready for me to pick you up in a couple minutes?” kk says, you immediately sit up, knowing you were in sweats and looked pretty rough,

“uh- y-yeah? where are we going sweetheart?” you asked her, “it’s a suprise, nothing fancy. i’ll see you soon ma.” kk said before hanging up.

a couple minutes later kk texts you, “here baby” and you walk down, seeing kks car in the parking lot. she opens your door for you, “hiii pretty girl,” she says with a smile opening your door.

she kisses you softly when you sit down in the car before going to the drivers side. she got situated in her seat with a smile. “how far is the suprise kk?” you say looking at her,

“just 15 minutes, it’s in a town a couple minutes from here, poynette i think.” kk said as she started driving from the campus of your college.

as she said, about 15 minutes later you arrived at a building, and kk parked. “what is this place?” you said confused, it looked almost like a church.

“you’ll see, ma.” she said before coming to open your door, and holding your hand as she took you down a few steps on the side of the building, a gazebo and a lake with greenery surrounding, the sunset behind the lake complimenting it.

“this is beautiful kk.” you say taking in the view. “how’d you find out about this place?”

“i came here a few months ago, before we started dating, for a banquet i think. this t place is used for all types of things.” she said as you two walked closer to the lake, when you two reached the small gazebo, you two sat on a bench in it.

you two sat in silence for a few minutes, until you put your head on her shoulder, she broke the silence. “i love you sweetheart.”

“i love you too.” you say before a couple minutes pass by and your be real notification going off, perfect timing. kk saw and brought her hand from your shoulder to your face, pressing your faces together and the other side showing the sunset.

“i love how excited you get over those.” kk said as you hit send, smiling.

your face was buried in your practice test booklet. caroline occasionally glanced over your shoulder before quickly looking away. all of it was confusing to her. you were going for a degree in environmental engineering. caroline thought you could just play hockey, but she loved that you were also building a second career just in case you didn't get drafted.

"can you hand me that textbook?" you asked as you motioned towards the book on the other side of caroline. she twisted and glanced between the four books you had left open. "solar panels."

you hadn't been watching hockey for very long. caroline caught you up and taught you what she could over the summer, but now that it was hockey season and you had to remember everything on your own. the game was going well, your girlfriend's team was winning, and the other team kept getting penalties.

"keep her name out of your mouth bitch!" that was unmistakably your girlfriend's voice yelling at one of her opponents. you stood with the crowd and watched as caroline beat down on the other girl.

it took several of her teammates to pull her away, and caroline was fuming as she sat in the penalty box. you watched her coach go over to try and talk to her, but she clearly wasn't having any of it. you hoped that she hadn't done anything too rash, but you got your answer when she stormed out of the rink the moment her two minutes were up. you didn't know your way around well, but you managed to sneak away and find her.

"go back and enjoy the game," caroline told you. she was sitting in the hallway in between the bathrooms and locker rooms. you sat down next to her and rested your head on her shoulder. "i feel so fucking stupid now."

"it was kind of dumb to get yourself ejected by your own coach, but it was sweet that you defended me. i won't even yell at you for fighting," you said. caroline let out a small laugh as she leaned over to kiss to the top of your head. going out was a mistake. the rest of the girls on the volleyball team wanted to celebrate the win. you had been feeling like the odd one out since your transfer to wisconsin from virginia. you had always felt different from your peers, and this new school was your chance to finally fit in.

"please. please. please, pick up." you were on the verge of tears as you stood outside of the little club. it was nothing too crazy, but at the same time, it was all too much.

"hmpf, hey, it's harvey." immediately, you felt awful for obviously waking caroline up. she wasn't even awake enough to see that it was you who had called her. still, she answered the phone, knowing that there was a good chance that one of her friends or teammates may have needed a ride home.

"caro, can you please come get me? the girls took me to pinnacle. i want to go home," you told her. you tried so hard to keep your composure, but once you started talking, the floodgates opened. you were nearly sobbing by the end of it.

"yeah, i'm on my way. just stay right where you are, okay? can you stay on the phone with me until i get there?" caroline asked you.

"y-yeah," you sniffled. "i'm sorry for waking you up."

"no, don't apologize. it's okay, i'm happy that you called me for help. i know that it's not easy for you. i know how much you wanted to try to bond with the other girls like this, but it's okay. this isn't your thing, and it doesn't have to be," caroline said. she kept talking to you, eventually calming you down by the time that she arrived. "aw baby, come here."

"i shouldn't have come. it was stupid to think that i could handle all those lights and the noise," you cried as you fell into her arms. caroline glanced over your shoulder as a few of your teammates stood by the door, cautiously watching. "i shouldn't have even moved in the first place."

"no, hey, you made a good decision. i'm so happy that you're closer to me than you were. i'm glad that i get to go to your games in person more, and you have more friends here than you know. nobody feels like they fit in, but you don't even know how much everybody here loves you. come on, let's go back to my place. i got some new lego sets that we can build tomorrow." caroline ushered you into her car before going back to assure your teammates that you'd be fine.

the blush dusting your cheeks intensifies and you try to hide your face in kk’s hands. she holds your face up so you can’t though, and continues to compliment you.

“and smart. have i told you that i think you’re so smart?”

“you tell me all the time”

“i was telling you as your friend. now i’m telling you as…” she trails off, furrowing her brows when she realises she doesn’t know what the two of you are.

i read of finishing her sentence like you normally would, you surge forward and capture her lips in yours again. you feel her grip on your face tighten ever so slightly as she pulls you further into her, pulling the air out of your lungs as she slides her tongue along your bottom lip.

the two of you sit making out on your bed for god knows how long. you’d somehow ended up on top of her, straddling her hips as you kissed her feverishly.

you break the kiss “girlfriend sounds fine” you say against her lips.

caroline smiles “well. my girlfriend is very hot, and a very good kisser”

you guarded the empty seat next to you like your life depended on it. caroline would be over at any moment, and you wanted her to sit next to you. all you had to do was wait for lacey to wrangle her onto the bus. caroline had texted you that morning, so you knew that she was awake. all you had to do was wait for her to get onto the bus.

"we're not even late!" you perked up at the sound of caroline's voice. behind you, you could hear the snickers of abby and hilary. they thought it was hilarious how obviously in love you were with your wisconsin teammate. "hi."

"hi," you greeted caroline. the words felt a little lame coming out of your mouth, but caroline didn't seem to mind. she still smiled at you the same way she always did, which had your heart pounding in your chest.

things weren't clear to you where the two of you stood. most of your teammates assumed that you were dating, but to you, it felt like you were friends who kissed sometimes. caroline never really tried to label what you had, but she acknowledged that you meant the world to her.

"do you mind if i take a nap on the way?" caroline asked you. you shook your head and moved to slip your headphones over your head. caroline stopped you to arrange things so that she could partially lay on you. "you're my new pillow."

"fine, but you have to be mine on the ride back," you told her. caroline pretended to be annoyed, but agreed anyway. she hid her face in the crook of your neck and pressed a couple of kisses there before she settled down to really sleep. the two of you thought that you were being sneaky, but when you got to the arena and checked your phones, there were at least a dozen pictures of the two of you cuddling in the team groupchat.
