some notes on girlblogging
deep appreciation of bell hooks as a girlblogger [in piecing together her spiritual practice, she writes that she takes bits and pieces from different practices]
caroline busta’s piece in document magazine from 2021 lives in my head rent free [Instead of attempting to dismantle the master’s house using the master’s tools, it’s more something like: Let’s pool crypto to book the master’s Airbnb and use the tools we find there to forge a forest utopia that the master could never survive.]
ace sparkly kat's / adrienne maree brown's / alina stefanscu's / chia amisola's / olivia mckayla ross' prolific archival practices
substack scares me / i don’t know how to write on substack though i enjoy reading others’ (i mustered one post from fall 2022/winter 2023 & summer 2022)........ & this piece by terry nguyen on girlblogging is so good (its limits, its situatedness)
it’s mother’s day; continually thinking of EEAAO- that reconciliation after estrangement because of relational shifts made between the mother daughter; also thinking of discourse & how people were split on how realistic and/or insufferable this relationship was - it made me think of a real sort of an illusory learned helplessness that (not exclusively but whose experience i am familiar with) asian american daughters carry from growing up
in a generous reading/workshop, dana suggested the futurity of girlhood in a line i wrote; elsewhere, i wonder about how we give our childhoods futures, as we live with our child selves, how the ways we care for our children indicate how a society stewards its future
anything bell hooks has written about girlhood and children and the meditative distance between her self and ideas via the pen name she adopted
kaitlin m chan on the stakes - on a predecessor to girlblogging, collaging the overlaps between lived experiences, embodied reality, social/political/structural/institutional power - developing curiosity around others’ realities and interior worlds - locating oneself in this personal canon thru this process - how one’s personal canon becomes a chorus
the personal, circuitous routes we take in locating ourselves / desire paths / the sylvia plath quote i used for my senior quote - to speak deeply with anyone
spent the last year essay texting, and addressing public groups in in-person settings [facilitating workshops, readings, speaking] -- this was very Character Building For Me [i'm chasing the humanities based, discussion-based learning communities i didn't let myself have in undergrad]
there are so many different registers i want to speak in, simultaneously, on the internet; i want it to feel as seamless as i feel when i move between different social spaces in a given day and find myself naturally shifting with where i am
girlblogging as a practice in making the weather… the conditions for precipitating … girlcondensation as a practice in raining down, decisively
thank u to kazumi w whom i find lots of welcomed condensation <3
(*douglas kearney*! i feel sheepish about this typo)
i forgot the tinyletter sunset date, sooooo i recompiled my subscriber list from old tinyletter notification emails, and sent out a lil email that was a precursor to the kernel launch 🫧
noticing the different kinds of centering that occur when i can take my time to speak (texting), and when i am placed in a time to speak (talking)

My Top 50 Songs of 2023*
*not necessarily from 2023
Year number 8 of the Top 50 Songs of 2023 that aren’t necessarily from 2023 playlist!
The biggest change this year is that I did my best to try and actually sequence the playlist so I recommend turning off the shuffle I've suggested in years past and let the thing play in order.
To be totally honest, I didn't fall in love with that many albums this year BUT I did fall in love with a ton of tracks, most of which are represented here (especially the end of the playlist which skews very 2023).
So check it out. Discover something new or fall in love with something you haven’t heard in a while. See you next year!

The dead Internet theory is an online conspiracy theory that asserts that the Internet now consists mainly of bot activity and automatically generated content manipulated by algorithmic curation, marginalizing organic human activity to manipulate the population.[1][2][3][4][5] Proponents of the theory believe these bots were created intentionally to help manipulate algorithms and boost search results in order to manipulate consumers.[5][6] Some proponents of the theory accuse government agencies of using bots to manipulate public perception.[2][5] The date given for this "death" was generally around 2016 or 2017.[2][7][8] The dead Internet theory has gained traction because many of the observed phenomena are quantifiable, such as increased bot traffic, but the literature does not support the full theory.[2][4] Caroline Busta, founder of the media platform New Models, was quoted in an article in The Atlantic calling much of the dead Internet theory a "paranoid fantasy", even if there are legitimate criticisms involving bot traffic and the integrity of the internet, but she said she does agree with the "overarching idea".[2] In an article in The New Atlantis, Robert Mariani called the theory a mix between a genuine conspiracy theory and a creepypasta.

To be truly countercultural today, in a time of tech hegemony, one has to, above all, betray the platform, which may come in the form of betraying or divesting from your public online self. (...) While climate change is a shared concern for many younger people, their responses might be more accurately understood as competitive-futurist than countercultural. As the greatly imaginative range of Political Compass positions illustrates, there is little consensus over who or what they are specifically opposing. This is wise in an era when the complexity of global crises makes it exceedingly difficult to effectively isolate responsible parties. How would one even begin to hold, say, Apple accountable for all of the externalities within the life of an iPhone? Who among us could easily give up our connectivity and still be economically and socially okay? It’s as if, having grown up on a fully networked Earth, Gen Z has bypassed counterculture, finding it futile in the face of a hegemonic system that more clearly resembles a Hydra than the monolithic forces that legacy counterculture was rebelling against. Intuiting that any activity directly opposing the system will only make the system stronger, the next generation is instead opting for radical hyperstition: constructing alternative futures that abandon our current infrastructure entirely (the emergence of blockchain-based currencies, for instance, or calls to not merely reform but fully abolish the police). (...) So what does today’s counter-hegemonic culture look like? It’s not particularly interested in being seen—at least not in person. It gets no thrill out of wearing leather and a mohawk and walking past main-street shops, which are empty now anyway. But it does demonstrate a hunger for freedom—freedom from the attention economy, from atomization, and the extractive logic of mainstream communication.

A truth specific to our time is that dissent against one level of authority is now very often driven by a deeper hegemonic force.
Caroline Busta, “The Internet Didn’t Kill Counterculture—You Just Won’t Find It on Instagram”
(Is this a truth specific to our time? Anarcho-spectacular youth energy from Antigone to Akira—though my own favored example is good old Hamlet—breaks the static old order to clear ground for the new hegemony. As Adorno wrote in one of his most arrestingly bleak left-conservative sentences,
One realizes with horror that earlier, opposing one’s parents because they represented the world, one was often secretly the mouthpiece, against a bad world, of one even worse.
The article is correct that counterculture in its 20th-century forms is dead, that trying to offend John Lithgow in Footloose, a film that itself embodies the neoliberal hegemony now to be overthrown, is worse than pointless. The remainder of the article, despite its prevailing tech-determinist view that the digital rhizome has obsolesced the very idea of a counterculture, argues nevertheless that there is potency left in strategies of political shock:
The names of these e-deologies tend to be both fantastical and literal. A “post-civilizationist” might focus on what optimal human survival would look like were civilization no longer possible. A “voluntarist post-agrarianist,” meanwhile, might value anarcho-primitivism skills but see them as integral to realizing a civilization sustained through opt-in agrarian communes. Elsewhere on the compass, one finds the likes of “Fully Automated Luxury Gay Space Communism” (where a total embrace of technology delivers humanity from scarcity, ecological volatility, and the reactionary social ills of resource competition) and the defiantly neo-traditionalist “technocratic theocracy,” which puts its faith in a machine-governed future that upholds Christian virtues. E-deologies are further explored on message boards and social media via memes, TikTok posts, and livestreamed Twitch and YouTube debates, all of which can get pretty gnarly (calls for “eco-fash global genocide” and “secession of white ethnostates,” etc.) And maybe here, we do have an aesthetic counter to the wallflower non-style of Big Tech: a raging messy semiotic meltdown of radicalizing (if absurdist) meme culture where the only ideological no-go zone is the liberal center.
I hear people my age—roughly the far wrong side of 30—lament the absence of a youth counterculture, but why would it be happening in places we go? I suspect I know as much about whatever Zoomer counterculture there is as my mother knew about, say, Daniel Clowes comics or Gregg Araki movies in 1996. Which is fine with me—I’d rather be reading Adorno. It’s pathetic and not a little menacing to still be hanging around the proverbial high school when you’re approaching middle age. Then there’s the harder truth implied by the article: it is in the nature of counterculture to be counter, and not counter to whomever we thought was “the man” when we were 16, to some stereotyped Republican in a suit and bowtie, but counter to what presents itself as authority to the youth of today, which just might be something we take for granted, identify with, or even cherish highly—as I was saying. Luckily, it is also in the nature of counterculture to be neutralized by commodification in the long run; I have fondly heard the scandalous sex-and-suicide songs of my youth playing over the store speakers at two in the afternoon as I palpated the avocados in the produce aisle.)

Seven-time champion Serena Williams suffered a shocking third round defeat to Qiang Wang on Friday making an early exit from the Australian Open. Williams had been hoping to take an outright lead in overall Grand Slam titles with 24, but fell agonisingly short in a three-set epic on Rod Laver Arena. The 38-year-old lost 4-6, 6-7 (7-2), 5-7 to China”s world number 29 in a match that lasted for over two hours and 40 minutes.

6, 11, 23 for song asks! I love you! 💗
Love you more! 😘
Okay, I'm going to actually dig into a couple of these, because I have many opinions about music.
"the three songs" ask set
6. three songs you wish you could erase from history (because they’re terrible)
This one was surprisingly difficult for me, considering the amount of music I complain about and say I hate. I actually had to enlist my husband's help (it was then, that I realized he doesn't know the difference between 'I'm not a fan' and hate 🤦🏻♀️)
I utterly despise this song. Elvis does a cover of it, I can't even listen to that (and you know how much I love Elvis). Ask me about my Sweet Caroline reaction videos, they exist. I mostly hate it for the overplayed-ness (likely a regional issue), and the stupid fucking add-ins that everyone does. I absolutely refuse to be a part of that. Ever.
Not much to say about this one. It's just annoying, and I hate the effect that they have on the singers voice. Instant channel change every time.
This song blows. I don't like it. No reason, it just bugs me, and I would be happy if it never existed.
11. three favourite songs from movie or TV series soundtrack
Just FYI, I have purposefully excluded anything Disney from this list. If I start bringing Disney into this, it’s going to be all three.
Duh, it's my favorite movie, and the song is a total bop. No way this wasn't making the cut.
The OC ruled, I was in deep. Still am, just hide it better when I'm not in the middle of a rewatch. This song came on the other day, and it gave me all the happy fuzzies in my tummy, because it reminded me of my favorite friends from Newport Beach.
Could I have gone Calculus? Sure. Any of their songs would have worked for this, but this song just makes me so goddamned happy. It so perfectly encapsulates what I have always, and will always loved about the boy band that wasn't really a boy band.
23. three songs that never fail to get you pumped up
The second this song starts, I'm moving. The second the lyrics kick in, I'm singing along. My current thoughts and opinions on Will Smith notwithstanding, this song is hype and I love it.
*The movie was trash.
This is another one that's just catchy as hell and gets me going every time.
I dare you not to move when this song comes on. You can't! I have never not seen a room lose their shit when this song comes on, and I am right there with them.
Thank you for asking, and listening to my longwinded ass! 💚💜

Capricorno
22 dicembre-19 gennaio

Rather than enact some participatory dreamscape where the artist, sited in the belly of the beast, leads a mix of eager students and collectors in a reading of Adorno; rather than hating on luxury, Carpenter was showing it off.
