On October 26th 1845 Lady Caroline Nairne, songwriter and poet, died at Gask.

Carolina Oliphant was born on 16 August 1766 in Gask, Perthshire. She became known as the “Flower of Strathearn” because of her beauty. Both her father and grandfather had joined Bonnie Prince Charlie in the 1745 Jacobite Uprising and she herself had been named after the Young Pretender (Carolina being the feminine form of Charles) so it is not perhaps surprising that many of her songs were sympathetic to the Jacobite cause.

In those days it was not appropriate for women of her social standing to publish poetry and so for a long time they were published under the pen-name of Mrs Bogan of Bogan. Even after marrying her second cousin, Major William Nairne in 1806, she kept her writing secret from him too! They had a son, born in 1808, when she was aged 43. In 1824, following a campaign by Sir Walter Scott, peerages and titles which had been forfeited as a result of the Jacobite Uprising were restored and so Caroline became Lady Nairne.

Like Robert Burns and James Hogg, Lady Nairne collected old folk tunes and modified or put her own words to them. She showed a love of the countryside in such songs as The Rowan Tree and The Pentland Hills. Her poem The Auld House is about her birthplace in Gask and she showed her compassion in songs such as “Caller Herring”

Her husband died in 1830 and she then travelled through Europe, returning to Gask two years before her death on 26th October 1845. She gave permission at that stage for her collected songs (87 in all) to be published as “Lays from Strathearn”. They appeared in 1846.

"Will ye no come back again" was written by Carolina Oliphant in the first half of the 19th century. It is one of the many songs and pipe tunes written about the period which encouraged the idealised and romantic view of the Jacobite cause which remains to this day.

What I Made for a Summer Celebration

Yesterday, Sunday August 1, was a day of celebration for our family. Our grandson, Bristol was christened…and our two families and close friends came together for lunch at our home after the christening!

Friday and Saturday were busy days filled with preparations…grocery shopping, cleaning the house and cooking. It was a busy time, but I knew it would be a special day and it was…a very special day!

I wasn’t great with taking pictures yesterday because there was so much going on and I wanted to be able to enjoy the day, but we did manage to get a few good shots. Above in the front hallway I’m with my grandson Graham. Keep scrolling for the recipes in the menu below…

My daughter Sarah requested quiches for lunch, so I made an assortment of different flavors the day before which worked out perfectly. I also made the most delicious pesto pasta salad, and a summer corn salad that were both delicious served with garden tomatoes sprinkled with fresh basil, flaky salt and feta cheese. I combined chunks of watermelon and cantaloupe, sliced kiwi and strawberries and added blueberries and raspberries for a beautiful fruit bowl.

I’m a firm believer that making everything homemade is just too much work, especially when there are delicious options that you can buy to round out your menu. I purchased miniature ham biscuits from a local shop as well as assorted flavors of muffins that went well with the menu. The coconut cake was homemade by Will’s (Sarah’s husband) grandmother. It was really nice for our families to get together to celebrate little Bristol!

Years ago, I purchased 50 plates and forks to have on hand for large gatherings when I would be serving food on a buffet. I keep them in a closet and simply pull them out and put them on the table. I also use really nice quality paper napkins that I also always have on hand. It just makes cleanup easy and is definitely a step up from plastic or paper. I did use nice quality clear plastic cups for everything other than wine. The plates and forks go straight into the dishwasher and right back into the closet for next time!

DeLoris is survived by three daughters, Teresa “Terre” Britt of Prior Lake, Minn., Barbara Grove of Ely and Deborah (Larry) Oliphant of Muskego, Wis.; son, Thomas (Patti) Angerer of Greenfield, Wis.; nine grandchildren, Nicholas (Heather) Britt, Charlie Britt, Megan Britt, Chris (former wife, Candie) Levi, Dan (Kirsten) Levi, Delaine (Jeremy) Van Deraa, Justin (Candace) Oliphant, Greg (Penny) Grove and Kelli (Dan) Johnson; 17 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Janet Kuehl.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; son-in-law, Bill Grove; brother, Don Holliday; sisters, Lorraine Hetzler and Estelle Sprinkle; and great-great-grandson, Matthew.

DeLoris was born on March 31, 1926, in Fruitland, the daughter of Clyde and Bertha Moore Holliday. She graduated in 1944 from Muscatine High School. On

Nov. 30, 1946, DeLoris married Richard Angerer in Muscatine. She worked for the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CGLIC) for 20 years and retired in 1981. DeLoris was a Red Cross volunteer and was very involved at St. Patrick Catholic Church.

DeLoris enjoyed life. She stayed active with daily walks and driving her car well into her 90s. She played cards with zeal, was a steadfast volunteer, and knew how to graciously entertain family and friends. DeLoris was an excellent seamstress and made the kids 'entire wardrobes when they were young. She loved making matching sundresses for the girls with matching shirt for Tom. She was an excellent cook and baker, but her true expertise was pie baking. She was known far and wide for the flakiest crust of all time. Dick and DeLoris

traveled the world. She was an amazing grandma, and loved the big Christmas Eve's at her home. And her morning coffee on the porch.

Memorials may be directed the charity of the donor’s choice.

The death penalty, or the mandated killing of an individual following conviction of a criminal offense, is a controversial topic in contemporary American politics. However, the origins of capital punishment laws on our planet are often overlooked in light of the heated debate surrounding its modern use. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, the first established death penalty laws date back to 18th century B.C. in the Code of King Hammurabi of Babylon, which legalized the death penalty for 25 different crimes. Under this code, death sentences were carried out through crucifixion, drowning, beating to death, being burned alive, and/or impalement. Similar laws were later adopted and slightly modified as part of the 14th Century B.C.’s Hittite Code, the 7th Century B.C.’s Draconian Code of Athens, and the 5th Century B.C.’s Roman Law of the Twelve Tablets1.  

Like many other aspects of law and government in our country, the usage of the death penalty in America was largely influenced by its utilization in Great Britain. During the reign of King Henry III in the 16th Century, the English used capital punishment often, executing as many as 72,000 people for committing any of over 200 crimes that were punishable by death within the country’s borders. Shortly thereafter, during the colonial 17th century, capital punishment began being used in what would later become America. While crimes punishable by death were not uniform amongst the colonies, many of them handed out the death penalty as retribution for crimes as serious as hitting your mother or father and as minor as stealing grapes or trading with Native Americans2. Despite its frequent use in Britain and adoption in the colonies, capital punishment soon faced strong opposition amongst the American public. According to the Constitutional Rights Foundation, opposition to the death penalty in America became noteworthy in the 1800’s but grew much more robust during World War II. It was during the War that, likely because of the overt killing of millions of soldiers, all Western European nations and Canada abolished capital punishment, leaving the United States as the last Western democracy still executing criminals3. 

Despite the United States opting to continue using the death penalty following World War II, the Supreme Court ruled over multiple cases in the mid to late 20th century that limited the usage of the death penalty on children and the mentally ill. It’s collective findings in Thompson v. Oklahoma (1988) and Stanford v. Kentucky (1989) effectively meant that no state could execute a person under the age of 16 for any crime, unless that state had a specific minimum age statute that allowed doing so. But these rulings were essentially reversed in 1992 when the U.S. adopted the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which said that the death penalty could not be used on anyone who was 18 or younger at the time their crime was committed4. In a similarly restricting fashion, in the case of Atkins v. Virginia (2002), the High Court found that death penalty executions of mentally retarded criminals are considered cruel and unusual, and therefore are disallowed by Eighth Amendment protections5. Thus, while our nation is an outlier in that it allows the death penalty at all, it has taken some steps to restrict its use on children and the mentally challenged. 

Furthermore, while the death penalty is allowed in our country, it is not legal in every state and its usage is far from being evenly distributed.  Currently, 28 states and the U.S. military allow the death penalty while the remaining 22 states and the District of Columbia do not6. Since 1977, capital punishment has been used in slightly more than 1,500 instances, with most of these death sentences taking place in just a few states. By far the most frequent user of capital punishment, the state of Texas has executed 570 persons alone, followed by the states of Virginia, Oklahoma, and Florida, which have sentenced 113, 112, and 99 people to death, respectively. On the other end of the spectrum lie the states of Colorado, Connecticut, Wyoming, and New Mexico, which each have executed just one person7. Therefore, while the death penalty is currently legal in most U.S. states, it’s use is disproportionately heavy in just a few jurisdictions. 

In those 28 states in which capital punishment is utilized, there exists some variation in how the punishment is administered. While the primary method for each state is death by lethal injection, many states have allowed for other options of execution. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures: 

Sixteen states also have a secondary method of execution authorized by statute. Laws in Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah and Wyoming provide a secondary option if lethal injection is found to be unconstitutional and/or unavailable. Arizona, Kentucky, Tennessee and Utah all have a choice of secondary methods for offenders who were sentenced before the introduction of lethal injection. And Alabama, California*, Florida, Missouri, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington have other methods that are available if the offender requests an alternative (2020).8 

Other methods of execution include death by electric chair, lethal gas, hanging, and firing squad. However, lethal injection has been used more than 1300 times, while these secondary methods of execution have combined to be used on just 180 different occurrences9.

Due to the violence involved in capital punishment and the moral questionability of if, frequent debate is had regarding whether the death penalty should be allowed in our country. Those who support its use often state that capital punishment is a strong deterrent to crime and that it acts as a form of ultimate punishment which helps maintain a just society. On the other hand, opponents of capital punishment often find the act to be inhumane, believe that it doesn’t actually deter future crime, and that is in an inappropriate punishment for any action, regardless of how violent it is. According to a 2018 Pew Research Center poll, in 1996, 78% of surveyed Americans believed the death penalty was a fair punishment for a convicted murderer. However, in 2018, the supporting percentage dropped to 54% and 39% of respondents said they opposed the use of capital punishment on murderers10. Thus, these numbers suggest that collective support of the death penalty in America is dwindling and that a growing number of Americans now strongly oppose it. While research findings are inconclusive as to whether the death penalty actually deters crime and whether or not it is applied equally as a punishment to persons of different race and gender11, one thing is for sure: support for the death penalty is dropping among the American public.   

As the death penalty becomes less favorable among American citizens and more states begin to outlaw its’s use (as have Washington, Illinois, Maryland, and Delaware have in the past decade alone12), it is very possible that it will continue to become less common in the United States. Currently, more than 70% of the world’s individual countries have made the death penalty illegal or simply do not use it and America stands as an outlier among its allies and fellow democratic nations in continuing to use capital punishment13. Many of these nations do not do so due to a lack of public support for the death penalty and the belief that doing so violates basic human rights. Unlike those nations, some American states have decided that such punishment is necessary to deter people from violating the most serious of laws. Whether you side with the many countries outlawing capital punishment or with those states which utilize it, it is clear that the use of the death penalty is declining across the world and in America. It seems only a matter of time until the use of capital punishment in America is outlawed in most of the country’s states, representing a shift in public opinion to one more like those represented by the rest of the world.

The 6 best NFL destinations for free agent Philip Rivers

Philip Rivers won’t be a Charger for the first time since 2004. Here’s where he could end up.

For the first time since 2004, Philip Rivers won’t be a Charger. Los Angeles officially parted ways with the quarterback who became the face of the franchise. Over 16 seasons, Rivers was a good and occasionally great player who, through awful luck and questionable decisions, could never get to a Super Bowl.

Rivers is now set to hit the free agent marketplace at a spritely 38 years old and coming off one of his worst seasons as a pro. It marked the third season in which he’s thrown at least 20 interceptions. His 3.9 percent touchdown rate was the lowest of his career as a full-time starter.

The veteran has bounced back from similar downturns in the past. He was 2013’s Comeback Player of the Year after leading the NFL in completion rate. He looked washed in 2016 after throwing a league-high 21 picks, but returned in 2017 and 2018 behind efficient, above-average seasons.

With the threat of retirement dangling over his head, there’s no guarantee those numbers will rebound — but a change of scenery may be the key to unlocking one last playoff run. Where could Rivers fit in an NFL landscape swamped with experienced passers and an influx of solid young prospects? Let’s take a look at the most obvious fits, based on a few different criteria.

The best offense for Rivers’ skills: Cleveland Browns

Rivers is a pass-heavy quarterback who has thrown more than 35 passes per game over the last decade. That’s the kind of profile that most NFL teams are looking for as offenses lean even harder into the air raid-ish tendencies that have taken over playbooks.

Returning Rivers back to his Pro Bowl self may be as simple as trimming his route tree and dialing back on deep throws. Per SIS, his 73 passes of 20+ yards were fourth-most in the league in 2019, but his 32.9 percent completion rate on those throws slotted him between Andy Dalton and Jameis Winston. Instead, he’s thrived in the late stage of his career on throws between 10-19 yards downfield.

Who can give him that kind of mid-range attack? How about a Cleveland Browns offense with a pass-vacuum safety net (Jarvis Landry), a catch-anything field stretcher (Odell Beckham Jr.), and a linebacker-juking tight end (David Njoku)?

The 2019 Browns opted for a steady diet of intermediate passes for Baker Mayfield. That was under the short-lived Freddie Kitchens regime, which lasted only one year. His firing gave way to former Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski’s reign as head coach — and his offenses threw deep even less than Mayfield despite having players like Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen in the lineup.

Chance it happens: 0.5/10

This is an unrealistic scenario barring some significant shakeups. Stefanski spent his 2019 turning Kirk Cousins into the best version of himself. He was brought to Cleveland to do the same with Mayfield, the No. 1 pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. The Browns don’t need Rivers and Rivers probably doesn’t want to be a Brown. In terms of pure fit, however, the best place for the former Charger to wrap up his career on a high note may just be Northeast Ohio.

The best combination of need and playmaking talent: Indianapolis Colts

The most successful version of Rivers is the one who is allowed to take shots but is also flanked by short-range options. That means he’s best served by a pass-catching tailback — i.e. LaDainian Tomlinson back in the 2000s or Austin Ekeler now — and a reliable tight end who can keep safeties anchored in the middle of the field without floating too far back.

Which team has a deep threat, a possession receiver masquerading as a tight end, and a running back capable of creating havoc? The Chiefs do, for sure, but they’re pretty well set at QB. If we take teams with entrenched QBs out of the picture, the top supporting cast may well be in the AFC South. The Indianapolis Colts can offer Rivers a rock-solid offensive line that allowed sacks on just five percent of dropbacks and All-Pro wideout T.Y. Hilton.

Rivers would also team with the dynamic tailback duo of Marlon Mack (1,091 rush yards in 2019) and Nyheim Hines (44 receptions). He’d be able to fall back on Pro Bowl tight end Jack Doyle in the middle of the field when his deep-play choices fail to pan out. Even if the Colts lack depth at their skill positions, Rivers could make the most out of the talent Indianapolis already has — all while filling the gap between Andrew Luck’s tenure and whomever winds up being the team’s quarterback of the future.

Chance it happens: 4/10

The Colts got half a good season out of Jacoby Brissett before injuries and regression indicated he may be better off in a backup role. Adding Rivers to the mix could push him to new heights or give the team an insurance policy if he falls apart late in the year again. Would a 5-2 Indianapolis team miss the postseason again if Rivers were waiting in the wings?

The best landing spot to win a Super Bowl: Chicago Bears

Rivers’ best bet at a Super Bowl ring in 2020 may be as a backup. However, there are a handful of opportunities where he could work his way to the top of the QB depth chart and guide a ready-made roster to the postseason.

The Chicago Bears can offer an array of playmakers who’d been previously lured to the Midwest in what appears to have been a futile effort to help Mitchell Trubisky’s development. The combination of Tarik Cohen and Trey Burton would surround Rivers with an athletic pair who can break off for big gains. Allen Robinson, whose career has been plagued by underwhelming quarterback play, would get the chance to prove himself as an upper-tier receiver alongside a big-armed passer.

The Bears’ defense backslid a bit in 2019, but is still loaded with players like Khalil Mack, Eddie Jackson, Kyle Fuller, and Roquan Smith. A steady presence behind center could provide an important cantilever to that championship-caliber unit.

Chance it happens: 3.5/10

General manager Ryan Pace says Trubisky is his starter for 2020. That doesn’t mean he won’t at least do his due diligence on this year’s crop of available quarterbacks, especially after the former No. 2 overall pick struggled mightily in 2019.

The best opportunity to jumpstart a rebuild: Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers are on the brink of a teardown, and Cam Newton can be released or traded while counting just $2 million against the team’s cap. Should team owner David Tepper decide jettisoning both head coach Ron Rivera and longtime tight end Greg Olsen wasn’t enough, Newton may be next to go. Tepper currently doesn’t sound all that enthused about his former MVP, either.

Newton’s departure would leave the club with two interesting, but flawed, young passers (Kyle Allen, Will Grier) and a draft slot that’s not quite high enough to snipe a top-tier quarterback (No. 7 overall). Rivers could be the stopgap solution new head coach Matt Rhule uses to bring his still-developing quarterbacks along slowly.

While he wouldn’t have the downfield weapons the Bears, Browns, or Colts could provide — D.J. Moore’s ongoing breakout aside — he’d play with tailback whose 2019 season would fit nicely among Tomlinson’s mid-2000s prime. Christian McCaffrey would excel in Rivers’ short-yardage passing game, leaving room for Moore to flourish in the open space behind him.

Chance it happens: 3/10

It all depends on what happens with Newton, but it sounds like the Panthers are barreling toward a change. Even then, Carolina could opt for a younger reclamation project like Winston or Marcus Mariota.

The best opportunity to annoy everyone in the NFL: New England Patriots

Nigh-insufferable fanbase meets nigh-insufferable quarterback.

May I present to you Tom Brady’s replacement: New England Patriots quarterback Philip Rivers.

Just imagine Rivers joining the franchise that ended his playoff runs in 2006, 2007, and 2018. New England follows up the Tom Brady era by swapping out a 42-year-old for a 38-year-old whose resume can’t even compare with his predecessor’s. Boos rain down from both Southern California and the Northeast alike.

It’s perfect and I hate it.

Chance it happens: 0.5/10

Let’s not act like Tom Brady isn’t going to turn around and re-sign with the Patriots, probably through some depressing Facebook ad or something similar.

The most realistic landing spot: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Rivers was unwilling to relocate to Los Angeles after his Chargers left San Diego behind. Instead, he bought a $200,000 mobile film room so he could do his homework during the 90-minute drive to and from practice.

This all suggests he’s not going to stray far from the Florida home he moved his family to this offseason. There’s only one Sunshine State franchise with both the need and the available salary cap space to bring Rivers to town. Jameis Winston is a free agent after five up-and-down seasons with the Buccaneers, and Tampa is in the market for a veteran quarterback who can serve as a bridge between their present and the future.

Enter Rivers, who’d give head coach Bruce Arians and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers another opportunity to rehabilitate a tarnished former top prospect. Arians transformed Carson Palmer from washed-up piece of Raiders garbage into a Pro Bowl quarterback in the sunset of his career. He also turned Winston into the greatest boom-or-bust passer in league history thanks to the NFL’s first 30-touchdown, 30-interception season. Whatever Rivers has left in the tank, Arians will get the most of it while dialing up his quarterback’s truest self up to “11.”

There’s more to like in Tampa than just Arians. Rivers would sling passes to possibly the NFL’s No. 1 receiving tandem in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Ronald Jones and Dare Ogunbonwale are both decent pass catchers from the backfield, too. Cameron Brate and O.J. Howard have each shown flashes of potential throughout their careers, and either could level up playing alongside a more consistent QB.

The Buccaneers can’t offer the playoff readiness of the Colts or Bears, but they can surround an aging quarterback with a proven, offensively minded head coach and a receiving corps that can turn Rivers’ risks downfield into big plays. Tampa Bay could replace Winston, who played like the Kirkland brand Philip Rivers, with the real thing — albeit a version that could be past its expiration date.

Chance it happens: 7/10

If Rivers wants to play and restore his value in 2019, the Buccaneers may be his best chance. And he could probably still commute to work!

As Biden Crafts US Coronavirus Response Proposals, Warren Has His Ear

Presumptive Democratic U.S. presidential nominee Joe Biden has been speaking regularly with former rival Elizabeth Warren on public health and economic relief ideas as he crafts more ambitious proposals aimed at helping Americans through the coronavirus crisis.

While Warren, a U.S. senator from Massachusetts and prominent voice on the Democratic Party’s left, criticized the former vice president’s approach on the campaign trail before dropping out and endorsing him, Biden advisers said the two see eye-to-eye on a number of issues.

In recent weeks, for example, Biden has endorsed Warren-backed ideas like canceling some student debt to help financially strapped Americans and echoed her calls for “structural change” in an economy ravaged by the pandemic.

Biden is poised to challenge Republican President Donald Trump in the Nov. 3 election. Warren is thought to be on Biden’s short list of possible vice presidential running mates along with Senators Kamala Harris and Amy Klobuchar, among others. A decision is not expected for weeks.

Warren and Biden have held telephone conversations since she exited the Democratic race in March, and now talk nearly weekly, according to people familiar with their discussions who spoke on condition of anonymity. The focus, according to one of the people, has been on public health and economic relief policy around a pandemic that has driven tens millions of Americans into unemployment.

“Like Senator Warren, Joe Biden has been a champion for working families over corporations his entire career,” Biden spokesman TJ Ducklo said, accusing Trump of pursuing policies favoring corporations and political allies over working Americans.

Ducklo added that Biden is working with Warren and “a number of experienced voices” to create plans to resolve the crisis and get help to Americans those who need it most.

Warren’s office declined to comment on her conversations with Biden.

Biden has consulted other former rivals for the Democratic nomination including Washington state Governor Jay Inslee, while his team also seeks the support of policy groups on the left.

During the Democratic race, Warren chided Biden for holding high-dollar fundraisers and not embracing sufficiently sweeping economic change. But people close to Biden said he and Warren are more aligned ideologically than their public differences might suggest, particularly in their belief that the U.S. middle class has been eviscerated – even before the pandemic.

‘I’M COUNTING ON HER’

Biden’s campaign on Sunday released a video showing him and Warren calling small-dollar donors together to thank them for their support. At one point, Biden joked that he never had as many contributors to thank until Warren’s endorsement, a reference to her grassroots fundraising prowess.

“I’m counting on her a great deal – not just for her endorsement but for her ideas and her leadership,” Biden said.

Biden already has begun embracing some Warren positions. In addition to the student-debt proposal, he joined Warren and Harris in their calls for federal health officials to release more data on racial disparities in the pandemic’s impact on the U.S. population.

Biden and Warren this month co-authored an opinion piece in McClatchy newspapers demanding more oversight over trillions of dollars in federal coronavirus relief aid that they said included “giveaways to the wealthy and big corporations.”

His rhetoric has shifted as well. Biden now talks about how the pandemic’s damage to the economy has created a “big” opportunity for “structural change,” echoing Warren’s campaign trail stump speech.

Last week, Biden said on his podcast that “we need some revolutionary institutional changes,” a shift in language from when he said after his victory in the pivotal Feb. 29 South Carolina primary contest: “Talk about revolution isn’t changing anyone’s life.”

But Biden remains opposed to some Warren priorities such as her proposed Medicare for All government-run healthcare system or a wealth tax on billionaires.

Former President Barack Obama, under whom Biden served as vice president, last month praised Warren in the context of the pandemic, writing on Twitter that her proposals should serve as a model for policymakers. Biden and Obama speak regularly about his campaign.

“Joe Biden has more license now to go really big with bold systematic economic polices and not be accused of flip-flopping in any way, but instead be admired for meeting the moment,” said Adam Green, a co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, a policy advocacy group that backed Warren during the primary campaign.

August 16th 1766 saw the birth of Carolina Oliphant (Lady Nairne), poet and author of many Jacobite songs.

Carolina Oliphant was born into an aristocratic family at the” ‘Auld Hoose’ of Gask, Perthshire, the daughter of Laird Laurence Oliphant who with Prince Charles fought during the Jacobite uprisings, and Margret Struan. Her father gave her the name of Carolina as a tribute to Prince Charles Edward Stuart

Carolina married her second cousin Major William Murray Nairne at her family home in Gask in Perthshire. Marrying a second cousin was very common in these days especially in aristocratic families to keep the blood lines as ‘pure’ as possible. After getting married, Lady Nairne and her husband William settled in Duddingston near Edinburgh where they lived in Caroline Cottage. This particular cottage that Lady Nairne and her husband were living in was built and helped funded for by her uncle Chief of Strowan a notable Jacobite.

In her younger years, she was pretty, energetic, and had a keen fondness for dancing. Niel Gow, the famous fiddler, was a contemporary, and they no doubt crossed paths. It was at this time that she adapted popular melodies with new lyrics. The original lyrics would have been considered much too crude for society folk. These included The Laird o' Cockpen, The County Meeting, and The Pleughman.

It was upon settling in Edinburgh that she became involved in her lifelong project to preserve and foster the songs of Scotland. In those days, it was not considered proper for ladies of her place in society to dabble in what she herself called "this queer trade of song-writing". Her attempts at keeping her hobby a secret included not telling her husband, publishing her books anonymously, or under the nom-de-plume: Mrs. Bogan of Bogan. Much of her work was contributed in this form, to Robert Purdie's The Scottish Minstrel, 1821-24, in six volumes. When she went to visit him, she would wear an old, veiled cloak, in the hopes she would not be recognized.

In 1824, part due to Walter Scott's endless petitioning, Parliament restored the forfeited Jacobite peerages and Major Nairne regained the family Barony, and she and her husband became Baron and Baroness Nairne.

Baron Nairne died in 1830, and from then on, she travelled quite extensively with her invalid son, who was born in 1808, and her great niece. Her son died in Brussels in 1837, and she finally relented to her relatives' pleas to return to Scotland in 1845. Tired and sick, she came back to her home in Gask to die on October 26, 1845, at age 79. She was buried within the new chapel which had been completed only days earlier.

Two years after her death, a posthumous collection of verse, Lays of Strathearn, was prepared by her sister, but this time her name subscribed to the book. A granite cross was erected to her memory in the grounds of Gask House.

Altogether, she wrote or adapted nearly 100 songs and poems in her lifelong endeavor. Lady Carolina Nairne deserves recognition today, because not only did she help to preserve many Scottish tunes, but also, at a time when women's talents were expected to be merely domestic, she managed to do her own thing.

Her creative ability, the secret part of her life, never interfered with her position as a society lady. Lady Carolina Nairne has been sadly neglected, but to her we owe immense gratitude, for, without her, much of the Scottish musical heritage would have been lost.

Lady Nairne was an astute collector of song and wrote some of Scotland's best-known songs, yet today there are few people that are familiar with her work. It doesn't help that some of her songs and prose have have been attributed to Robert Burns, James Hogg or Walter Scott.
