⚜🇫🇷 Carolands architect, Ernest-Paul Sanson, designed this Salon Chinois for Harriett Pullman-Carolan as a delightful tea room in 1914. She was an avid Francophile and lover of all things French as well as their style of incorporating of Asain Art referred to as "Chinoiserie"
Without furnishings the room seems more a work of art as seen in the middle photos taken by Mick Hale for the 2006 book "Carolands"
The Salon Chinos is often called the Chinese Lacquer Room referring to the French technique of lacquer application that often is as rare and valuable as the actual Chinese panels themselves. The return of Harriett's original 16th Century woven Ningxia Chinese carpet for this room was found by a current Curator & purchased by the last owners of the Chateau.

⚜ 🇨🇵 Harriett Pullman Carolan lived half her life in France where they appreciated the beauty of Asian cultures so it's only natural for her to order the installation of her own "Chinois Salon" aka Chinese Lacquer Room in her 98 room French Chateau named Carolands. Constructed in 1915, the small Chinois Salon was furnished with an extraordinarily rare carpet from her own collection.
This Ningxia carpet is dated from the Kangxi period (1662-1722) and features in the center a wonderful mythical animal called a qilin, symbolizing among other things serenity and prosperity. This fantastic beast is surrounded by lion-dogs and other auspicious motifs.
This carpet was sold in New York City in 1957 a year after Harriett died, and was in several important collections until it was finally returned to Carolands where it resides back in its original location thanks to the generosity of the last owners of the Chateau.

🎬 🇺🇸🏰 America's Castles: CAROLANDS - 📺 PBS special named "The Heiress & Her Chateau: An American Downton Abbey" based on the 2 hour documentary film on the history of the 98-room Beaux-Arts French Château built in 1916 by Pullman Luxury Railway Car heiress, Harriett Pullman Carolan just south of San Francisco, California. Harriett Pullman Carolan was a lifelong Francophile who wanted to build Carolands as her own authentically French Château in the San Francisco Bay Area. She chose the most important French architect, Ernest Sanson and Landscape-architect, Achillès Duchêne, to execute her dream house on 554 acres of pristine suburban woodlands. The documentary follows the history of the Gilded Age Château from its construction between 1914-16 in the Beaux-Arts tradition through the various stages of ownership and abandonment up to its loving restoration by Dr Ann and Charles Johnson, who donated the estate in 2012 to the non profit CarolandsFoundation. 🇺🇸💟🇫🇷 💻 CAROLANDS.ORG for more info and ordering book or dvds.

Carolands
Harriet Pullman Carolan, heiress to the Pullman railroad car company fortune, constructed this lavish mini-palace in 1915-16, the focal point of a fully landscaped 500-acre estate. Willis Polk supervised construction of the American Renaissance-design residence, which is an adaptation of Vaux le Vicomte, also prototype for the Palace of Versailles. In the early 1950s, Countess Lillian Remillard Dandini acquired the chateau and the six remaining acres of land.

An exclusive community of about 11,000 residents that sits about halfway between San Francisco and San Jose, Hillsborough ranked fifth in Bloomberg’s 2019 ranking of America’s richest places, with an average household income of more than $370,000 and a median home value of more than $4.3m.
The enclave is known for its architecture, including a 98-room Beaux-Arts chateau called Carolands, which was built for the heiress of the Pullman railway car fortune; the “Western White House” designed by Julia Morgan for the eldest son of William Randolph Hearst; and a Frank Lloyd Wright building that helped popularize the mid-century modern style in California.
But the tastemakers of Hillsborough have not extended their favor to the experimental stylings of William Nicholson, the architect who came up with the idea of creating a house by spraying gunite (dry concrete) over a structure molded from giant aeronautical balloons, wire mesh and rebar. It was in response to the Nicholson’s construction of the Flintstone house in 1976 that the town first established its Architecture and Design Review Board (ADRB), according to former resident Tom Petika, who told the San Francisco Chronicle in 1997 that the ADRB was established “so there would never be another home like that built in Hillsborough”.

The future of Downton Abbey?
Not too far from me is Carolands Chateau, the former estate of the Pullman family heiress. The grounds around it was sold to developers and now the country home is surrounded by mid-century ranch houses as far as the eye can see.

👑💎💍🇫🇷 The rare extant jewelry of the French Queen Marie-Antoinette will be auctioned off by Sotheby's in Geneva on November 14th just in time for Christmas delivery (HINT HINT!!!) lol The video explains the provenance and backstory but I know Harriett Pullman-Carolan, a Francophile that adored all things Marie-Antoinette especially pearls, would love those to be displayed at Carolands.
