Rosewood Hotels and Resorts®, in partnership with renowned real estate developer Qatari Diar, is pleased to announce the latest plans for the brand’s second London property, set to open in 2024 in the city’s distinguished Mayfair district. Officially named The Chancery Rosewood, the new hotel will realize Rosewood Hotels & Resorts’ signature A Sense of Place® philosophy, which takes the local sensibilities of a destination to inform the property experience provided there, in myriad ways, including expert-led design and décor. Balancing the rich history of the iconic building with contemporary comforts prioritized by today’s luxury traveler, the hotel will showcase architecture restoration by British architect Sir David Chipperfield of David Chipperfield Architects and interiors by French architect Joseph Dirand.

“We are proud to have The Chancery Rosewood lead the transformation of the revitalized Grosvenor Square, an incredible public interest initiative that is nearly a decade in the making,” said Sonia Cheng, chief executive officer of Rosewood Hotel Group. “The gifted team of architects and designers will breathe a second life into the iconic building, which is poised to become a superlative destination in London, and we thank our partners at Qatari Diar for the chance to be a part of this remarkable project.”

The Chancery Rosewood’s name graciously pays homage to the building’s storied past and lasting legacy. Originally built by architect Eero Saarinen in 1960, the mid-twentieth century Mayfair landmark previously housed the United States embassy and was the first purpose-built chancery in London. Saarinen’s grand façade commanded attention over the western border of Grosvenor Square, with the building becoming tantamount with the United Kingdom’s diplomatic relationship with the United States.

The building’s original features and mid-century design details, including the iconic Grade II façade and diagrid ceiling, will be retained through a meticulous preservation process undertaken by David Chipperfield Architects, with a mission to reinforce and enhance Saarinen’s original vision of a ‘palace on the park.’ This exercise will extend into the interiors, the design of which will be led by the globally renowned Joseph Dirand, a longtime admirer of Saarinen. Dirand will honor the legacy of the celebrated Saarinen while simultaneously infusing his own signature style of art de vivre, ensuring each individual space is intimate and glamorous.

Taking inspiration from the sophistication of the 1920s and the creativity and glamour of the 1960s, the design scheme will draw from a warm, rich color palette and feature refined, Art Deco-style detailing, walnut paneling and marble and brass accents, altogether channeling the ambiance of a traditional British gentlemen’s club. Slated to be both the first five-star hotel and first U.K. hotel to ever receive a BREEAM outstanding rating for sustainable development, the property truly showcases the powers of sustainability.

Upon completion, The Chancery Rosewood will deliver Rosewood’s iconic residential atmosphere through 139 thoughtfully designed guestrooms and suites, as well as revitalized public spaces and dining venues designed by Tristan Auer and Bar Studio. Additional amenities and facilities consist of a Yabu Pushelberg designed Asaya integrative wellness facility, five retail outlets and a selection of meeting and events spaces including a 750-guest ballroom. The hotel will mark Rosewood Hotels & Resorts’ second property in London and sixth in Europe.

Robert Redford Sells Sundance Mountain Resort

Robert Redford, the actor, filmmaker, and conservationist, announced on Friday that he is selling the Sundance Mountain Resort to Broadreach Capital Partners and Cedar Capital Partners. Redford founded Sundance Mountain Resort more than 50 years ago.

“As stewards of this unique place, it has always been my vision that the Sundance Mountain Resort would be a place where art, nature, and recreation come together to make the world a better place – now and in the future,” said Redford in a statement.  

The sale is the result of a long-term, strategic plan designed to preserve and build upon the Redford legacy at the resort, including a continued commitment to balancing responsible development and land preservation. The 2,600-acre resort includes 1,845 acres of land preserved through a conservation easement and protective covenants.

In conjunction with this announcement, Redford and his family have entered into a partnership with Utah Open Lands to put over 300 acres of pristine wildlife habitat, streams, and wetlands into permanent protection. Located at the base of Mt. Timpanogos, the newly established Redford Family Elk Meadows Preserve includes the meadow below the iconic Stewart Falls, along with popular trails for hiking and cross-country skiing.

Sundance is like no other mountain in Utah, or the United States, for that matter. Dominating the canyon where the resort lies is 12,000 foot Mount Timpanogos. It has long been an outlier, a resort that raised environmental awareness decades ago. It has long also felt as much a preserve as a resort, thanks to placing 1,845 acres into an easement years ago. While many guests are wealthy, the low-key resort has never been flashy or an extension of Hollywood, despite Redford’s ownership. It has long served as a resort for locals from nearby Provo.

Redford discovered the area that would become Sundance when he was riding his motorcycle from his home in California to college at the University of Colorado in the 1950s. He later met and married a girl from Provo, came back, and bought two acres for $500 in 1961 from the owners, a sheepherding family who ran a mom and pop ski operation here called Timphaven. Redford built a cabin and lived the mountain man lifestyle with his young family between his early films.

But by the late 1960s, developers were beginning to change the face of Utah. Redford scrambled, using some of his movie money, corralling some friends, and managed to buy another 3,000 acres. He halted a massive development of A‑frames that would have been built in the canyon. But keeping Sundance required that it make money, so the fledgling Sundance Mountain Resort built the first of the 95 cottages in the late 1980s, and eventually permitted more than 200 private homes to be built, most of them nestled in the trees. The Foundry Grill and The Tree Room, with a massive pine tree growing through the middle of the restaurant, were opened. So was the Owl Bar, with its oak bar that had been commissioned by the real Butch Cassidy. Redford discovered it in Wyoming and had it restored.

The sale includes all assets of Sundance Mountain Resort, including the resort buildings, ski lifts, on-site dining venues, and event spaces. It does not affect the structure of, or Robert Redford’s involvement in, the Sundance Institute and Sundance Film Festival, Sundance Catalog, Sundance TV, or the Redford Center. The resort will continue to host workshops and events organized by the Sundance Institute and the Redford Center, including serving as a location for the annual Sundance Film Festival. Other terms of the agreement were not disclosed. 

Established in 2002, Broadreach Capital Partners based in Palo Alto, California, has owned leading hotel/resort management companies, including Rosewood Hotels and Resorts and urban hotels including The Carlyle, New York; San Francisco Fairmont; Santa Barbara Biltmore. Cedar Capital Partners, based in New York and London, owns Shelborne South Beach, Miami; The Hoxton Hotel, Rome; The Grosvenor Hotel, Edinburgh; The Lloyd Hotel, Amsterdam; Angsana Corfu – A Banyan Tree Resort, Corfu; and Mama Shelter, Prague. 

Broadreach and Cedar say that their intention is to work closely with the Sundance community to build upon the attributes that have made the resort a one-of-a-kind place. Under the new ownership, guests can expect to see improvements to the resort’s infrastructure, including a high-speed lift and eventually a day lodge and an inn.

 In a statement, Redford said “Change is inevitable, and for several years, my family and I have been thinking about a transition to new ownership for the resort. We knew that at the right time, and with the right people, we could make the transition. Broadreach and Cedar share our values and interest in maintaining the resort’s unique character while honoring its history, community, and natural beauty. This makes them well-suited to ensure that future generations can continue to find solace and inspiration here.”
