Carl Weathers, who starred as Apollo Creed in the first four “Rocky” films opposite Sylvester Stallone, died Thursday, his manager Matt Luber confirmed to Variety. He was 76.

Weathers also starred in 1987’s “Predator” and had a memorable role in Adam Sandler’s “Happy Gilmore.” He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his work in the “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian.”

He voiced Combat Carl in “Toy Story 4” and played a fictionalized version of himself in a recurring role on “Arrested Development.” His other credits include the TV series “Street Justice,” “Colony,” “The Shield,” “Chicago Justice” and “Brothers,” and the films “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Death Hunt” and “The Comebacks.”

After working with Sandler on the 1996 golf comedy “Happy Gilmore,” Weathers briefly reprised his role in “Little Nicky” and voiced a character in Sandler’s animated Hanukkah comedy “Eight Crazy Nights.”

Born Jan. 14, 1948, in New Orleans, Weathers played a variety of sports including boxing, football, soccer, wrestling and gymnastics. He played football in college at San Diego State University and helped the Aztecs win the 1969 Pasadena Bowl. While at SDSU, Weathers also pursued a degree in theatre arts, but in 1970 he signed with the Oakland Raiders as a free agent, and he played in eight games in the NFL as a linebacker across two seasons.

After his stint in professional football, Weathers pivoted more seriously to acting, landing small roles in Arthur Marks’ blaxploitation movies “Bucktown” and “Friday Foster,” as well as TV series including “Good Times,” “Kung Fu,” “Cannon” and “Starsky and Hutch.”

In “Predator,” Weathers starred as Colonel Al Dillon alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, who went on to become the governor of California, and Jesse Ventura, who became the Minnesota governor. In 1988, Weathers hosted “Saturday Night Live” and, many years later, he returned to the live sketch show for a spoof segment in which he announces he is running for political office on the basis that he was “the Black guy in ‘Predator.'”

When Stallone asked Weathers for permission to use footage from earlier “Rocky” films for the sixth movie in the franchise, 2006’s “Rocky Balboa,” Weathers refused and lobbied for an actual part in the film, despite his character, Apollo Creed, dying in “Rocky IV.” Stallone said no and hired a lookalike actor to shoot flashback fight sequences. The pair reconciled, and Weathers later allowed Stallone to use his likeness in the “Creed” sequel series, in which Michael B. Jordan plays Apollo Creed’s son.

In his later career, Weathers landed smaller roles in TV procedurals, and he directed episodes of them, too. He earned his first Emmy nomination in 2021 for the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” in which he played Greef Karga in nine episodes across three seasons. Weathers stepped into the director’s chair for Episodes 12 and 20 of the “Star Wars” spinoff.

Weathers is survived by his ex-wife, Mary Ann, and their two sons.

I remember seeing Rocky as a kid and I didn’t much like Apollo Creed. He was arrogant, cocky, and besides, the star of the show was Rocky, the underdog. Of course they eventually became friends and I liked him then.

I loved him as Al Dillon in Preditor and as Chubbs in Happy Gilmore.

I blew through the five episode season in a couple days. Why’d they only order up five episodes in the first season? I mean, F1: Drive to Survive has had 10 episode since season 1.

They focused on the playoffs but they could’ve done more leading into the playoffs. It’s a long season full of drama and I wanted more.

Overall it was really good and I hope we get a full 10 episodes in season 2.

It’s odd to see Apple using Java and Kotlin for this but it does make sense given it’s meant to be portable to different platforms. And by different platforms I mean actual different platforms like Linux, Windows, and Mac. Not Mac, iPhone, and iPad. 😄

Whether my stories are about quiet quitting, or job-hopping, or leveraging a job offer from a competitor to force your boss to give you a raise, readers seem to divide into two groups.

There are so many factors to loyalty. The true believers exist and they have little to fear. Then there are the masses who quietly do their jobs and aren’t really seen.

We had a layoff at work last May and it destroyed morale, destroyed the company culture, and left loyalty at an all time low.

I hate to be so cynical but companies aren’t there for you. They’re there to make profit. Loyalty from the company only extends so far to the employee.

I still love my job and work hard at it everyday but I fear being laid off.

New libraries. New languages. New Frameworks. New Intern coming in and thinking he can rewrite better parts of the code himself. It’s easy to get swept away. But is the newest framework always the best choice? Is a rewrite really going to make everything better? Or is there wisdom in the code that has been around for years, has been tested with crazy edge cases, and has evolved together with the business?

I understand why folks are tempted to rewrite thing, I really do. When I wasn’t a dinosaur of a developer I hand that tendency. “I can make this better”, my brain would say. Sure, there’s occasion to “turn the soil” once in a while and I believe that’s good for a code base. But a full rewrite? No. 🌹

It sounds amazing, and sometimes it is. But the Vision Pro also represents a series of really big tradeoffs — tradeoffs that are impossible to ignore. Some of those tradeoffs are very tangible: getting all this tech in a headset means there’s a lot of weight on your face, so Apple chose to use an external battery pack connected by a cable. But there are other, more philosophical tradeoffs as well.

I think Nilay did a great job balancing his review of Vision Pro.

It’s a great start but has a really long way to go as a general computing device. That’s my opinion having never used one.

I really believe we’ll get a sense for how we should be using it if we see pictures of Apple Executives wearing it daily to do their jobs. I kind of doubt we’ll see that for anything other than articles written about it.

The iPhone, Watch, and AirPods are devices those same executives probably use everyday. I just can’t see them using Vision Pro as much.

When/if they’re ever able to make them look like regular glasses and they cost around $500-800 I’d consider wearing them all the time. Until then they’re way too expensive for my blood. I would rather spend that kind of green on a new MacBook Pro.

Will Stream support Vision Pro? I think so. I have no idea when, but I think it will.

With less than one month to go before the return of FAN EXPO New Orleans, six celebrities from several iconic franchises have been added to the celebrity roster of the pop culture extravaganza set for January 6-8 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The exciting set of newcomers includes fan favorites Christina Ricci (“Addams Family,” “Wednesday”), Giancarlo Esposito (“The Mandalorian,” “Breaking Bad”), Carl Weathers (“The Mandalorian,” “Predator”). Bonnie Wright (“Harry Potter”) and the “Stranger Things” duo of Grace Van Dien and Eduardo Franco.

Ricci, who first caught attention as a child star as “Wednesday Addams” in The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993), has nearly 100 acting credits, including as “Marilyn Thornhill” in the current Netflix series “Wednesday.” She moved from appearances as a teen in Casper and Now and Then to adult roles in Sleepy Hollow, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Speed Racer and more and had regular roles in TV series “Ally McBeal,” “Pan Am” and others.

The prolific veteran film, television and stage actor, director and producer Esposito, in addition to his role as “Moff Gideon” on the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” is well known by television audiences for his iconic portrayal of drug kingpin “Gus Fring” in AMC’s critically acclaimed award-winning series “Breaking Bad.” Some of Esposito’s most memorable performances can be seen in films such as Rabbit Hole, The Usual Suspects, Smoke, The Last Holiday and Spike Lee’s films Do the Right Thing, Mo’ Better Blues, School Daze and Malcolm X.

Weathers, who portrays “Greef Karga” in “The Mandalorian,” first gained acclaim for his role as boxer “Apollo Creed” in the first four Rocky films (1976–85). The former pro football player also has had memorable roles as “George Dillon” in Predator (1987), the title role in Action Jackson (1988), and “Combat Carl” in the Toy Story franchise. Weathers and Esposito will be joined at FAN EXPO New Orleans by fellow “Mandalorian” standout Katee Sackhoff, announced last month in the first wave of guests.

Wright, whose portrayal of Ron Weasley's little sister “Ginny” in 2001's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone marked her first screen appearance, has since reprised the role in numerous iterations of the franchise, through Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, Part 2 (2011). The London-born actress also earned numerous awards for her lead role in Sweat (2015) and starred in a contemporary retelling of A Christmas Carol in 2018. She will join fellow Potter standout Matthew Lewis (“Neville Longbottom”), who announced in November that he will be attending the event.

Van Dien built a resume that has included appearances as “Brooke Osmond” in the Netflix teen drama series “Greenhouse Academy” and “Katie Campbell” in NBC drama series “The Village” before landing a recurring spot as “Chrissy Cunningham” in Season 4 of “Stranger Things.” She is also a noted and popular streamer on Twitch.

Franco has the key “Stranger Things” role of “Argyle,” also in Season 4 of the Netflix series. He also appeared as “Theo” in Booksmart and “Spencer Diaz” in the Netflix mockumentary “American Vandal.” He and Van Dien join fellow “Stranger Things” cast member Joseph Quinn (“Eddie Munson”), who has previously been announced to the FAN EXPO New Orleans celebrity roster.

In addition to Sackhoff, Lewis, and Quinn, the new wave of celebrities will be part of a star-studded FAN EXPO New Orleans lineup that includes legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, The Evil Dead franchise), Anson Mount (“Star Trek: Discovery,” “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) and the stars of “Trailer Park Boys” Mike Smith, John Paul Tremblay and Robb Wells.
