Carl Størmer og nordlyset på den 14. Istanbul-biennalen

OCA is pleased to announce the presentation of Norwegian mathematician and physicist Carl Størmer (1874–1957) in the 14th Istanbul Biennial ‘SALTWATER: A Theory of Thought Forms’ drafted by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev and organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV). The project is presented by Thale Elisabeth Sørlie and Arne Langleite of the Museum of Science and Technology in Oslo, Norway.
According to Sørlie and Langleite, the presentation is the result of ‘a rigorous artistic and historical research into the photographs of aurora borealisrecorded by Carl Størmer, and will include original materials by him from the collections of the Museum of Science and Technology in Oslo. In photographing the northern lights for the first time, Størmer not only captured a natural phenomenon that had thus far not been seen in photographs, but he also acted as a creator of the same. His observations made manifest a fleeting phenomena and guided us towards understanding instead of believing’.
They go on to explain that ‘we aim at re-experiencing the singular gaze of a man who not only looks at the skies, but who also had a strong visual appetite for people, and a technical creativity that helped him develop the necessary equipment to capture what he needed to see. Our aim is to understand the photographic experience of the year 1910. Whereas the people of today are jaded, very experienced viewers of images of any kind, depicting almost anything imaginable (and manythings beyond the limits of most people’s imagination), the visual competence of the audience in 1910 was very different, and much more limited. The foundation for this investigation will be the entire scope of Størmer’s photography, looking atvisual relationships between images of spatial phenomena and the holiday snaps of his summers, but also drawing on the visual representation of mathematical formula and the sketches and diagrammatic representations of the movement of atomic particles’. Among others, Størmer’s historical photographs, northern light-camera and a sculpture based on his models of particle tracks will be included in the presentation.
The project has been supported through OCA’s International Support Programme.
About Carl Størmer
Fredrik Carl MülertzStørmer (1874–1957) was a Norwegian mathematician whose main preoccupation was the aurora borealis. The lights unfolding in the sky were still a mystery at the beginning of the 20th century, before Størmer managed to make them manifest and comprehensible. As an amateur photographer, he developed a method for photographing the lights that made it possible to calculate their altitude. As a mathematician, he developed formulae and made numerous calculations on the theoretically possible orbits of charged particles entering the Earth’s atmosphere and checked these against calculations of orbits based on data from his photographic material.
About the 14th Istanbul Biennial, ‘SALTWATER: A Theory of Thought Forms’
According to Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, the 14th edition of the Istanbul Biennial ‘hovers around a material – salt water – and the contrasting image-forms of knots and waves. It looks for where to draw the line, to withdraw, to draw upon, and to draw out. It does so offshore, on the flat surfaces with our fingertips but also in the depths, underwater, before the enfolded encoding unfolds. This city-wide exhibition on the Bosphorus considers different frequenciesand patterns of waves, the currents and densities of water, both visible and invisible, that poeticallyand politically shape and transform the world. With and through art, we mourn, commemorate, denounce, try to heal, and we commit ourselves to the possibility of joy and vitality, of many communities that have co-inhabited this space, leaping from form to flourishing life.’
