Painting titled "Lucretia Borgia Reigns in the Vatican in the Absence of Pope Alexander VI" (1908–14) by Frank Cadogan Cowper (1877–1958); crafted using oil paint on canvas backed with wood. The dimensions are 2210 × 1537 mm.
This is a re-creation of an obscure and scandalous incident from the history of the Popes. In 1501 the illegitimate daughter of Pope Alexander VI, Lucrezia Borgia, took his place at a meeting. Frank Cowper has invented this suggestive moment in which two noblemen part Lucrezia’s dress so that a Francisan friar can kiss her shoe. The room in the Vatican in which Lucrezia Borgia appeared still exists. It was decorated by the Italian Renaissance artist Pinturrichio. Cowper went there to copy it and painted the faces of the Cardinals from their original portraits.
The picture was begun in Rome in the Borgia Apartments of the Vatican. These had been occupied by Cardinal Merry del Val, the Papal Secretary of State, and were not open to the public, but had been vacated just before the artist first came to Rome in 1908, so he was able to paint there. The rooms were decorated by Pinturicchio and the frescoes of the Annunication and the Nativity appear on either side of the throne. The subject was suggested by the Diary of John Burchard, Bishop of Orta, Papal Master of the Ceremonies, 27 July 1501, and the following quotation was printed in the R.A. catalogue: ‘Before his Holiness, our Master, left the city, he turned over the palace and all business affairs to his daughter Lucrezia, giving her full power to open all letters which arrive.’
The Cardinals around Lucrezia were painted from contemporary portraits: the one writing on the right is Cardinal Giovanni de Medici, afterwards Leo X, the one on the left holding back her robe is Cardinal Farnese, afterwards Paul III, and the one standing on the right is the Cardinal of Lisbon who had to advise Lucrezia on her official duties. (Letters from the artist 18 and 23 January 1956).

Could you drop a prayer for me? I feel an awful lot like the older son in the Prodigal son story. I have a friend who I love as a sister in Christ but who has been an object of jealousy for me for a long time. She has hurt me very badly in the course of our friendship, setting us up in comparison for grades, boyfriends, etc., and I still hold on to some of those wounds. but now she is more successful, marrying the guy of both our dreams, and feels as though she has won at life whereas I feel lost, lonely, and frustrated at my circumstances. I know she has made lots of mistakes and has had some very bad things happen in her childhood and life, and my mentor says it could be that God is giving her this happiness because she has suffered much in the past. But does that mean I don’t deserve a happy future just because I had a good childhood and a (relatively) easy life until now? I feel like the older brother, jealous of the younger’s feast; do I not deserve happiness too? I don’t know how to rejoice in her blessings…

From the desire of being praised, deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being humiliated, deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being wronged, deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, deliver me, Jesus.
That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

I borrowed this book from the Monaghan library. It is excellent. The two chapters on Cardinal Sean Brady are excellent. Sean Brady, born in 1939, began his priestly ministry as a Latin teacher.
In Latin, one would formally refer to Cardinal Brady as:
‘Ēminentissimus ac Reverendissimus Dominus Iōannēs Sānctae Rōmānae Ecclēsiae Cardinālis Brady.’
or, in English:
‘The Most Eminent and Most Reverend Lord, Seán—of the Holy Roman Church—Cardinal Brady.’
Cardinals are parish priests of the diocese of Rome, hence “of the Holy Roman Church”. When a Pope dies: ‘sēde vacante’, ‘the See is Vacant’, the future of the Roman Diocese hinges upon the Cardinals, as they must elect a new Pope. ‘cardō’ in Latin means ‘hinge’.
President Mc Aleese was at Brady’s red-hat ceremony in Rome. I hear that in her retirement, President Mc Aleese studies Canon Law. I wonder is she learning Latin? The most authoritative version of Canon Law is the Latin version.
In Scally’s Book, the notorious Vatican document ‘Crīmen Sollicitātiōnis’, or ‘The Crime of Solicitation’ (1962) is brought up, but not by name. Brady shows this document to Scally so as to explain his inaction. One can read ‘The Crime of Solicitation’ (1962) on Bishop Accountability’s Website. Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val—an unofficial Saint in traditionalist Catholic circles—issued an earlier version of this document in 1922 for Pope Pius XI.

Qu’on ne me demande jamais mon avis,
Qu’on me laisse à la dernière place,
Qu’on ne me fasse jamais de compliment,
Qu’on me blâme à temps et à contretemps,

Praying Through Lent: The Litany of Humility
Humility is the prize of all the virtues, and practicing it well is the key to obtaining all the rest. Penance, fasting, and almsgiving, all highlighted during the Lenten season, are ways to cultivate humility in our hearts, in addition to reciting this beautiful prayer.
The Litany of Humility is attributed to Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val (1865-1930) who served as the Secretary of State for Pope St. Pius X.
Although this prayer is wonderful to pray regularly when our pride rears its ugly head, it is an especially poignant prayer and meditation for the Lenten season. Our ultimate example in humility is our Savior Jesus Christ, who willingly suffered in silence on our behalf each one of the things listed in this litany.
THE LITANY OF HUMILITY
O Jesus! Meek and humble of heart, Hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. Amen.
