👊 FACTS: THIS CITÉ IS THE COOLEST CASTLE IN FRANCE. (Trust me, I know. My parents forced me to go to a summer camp where I had to ride a bike for a couple of weeks in order to visit the different castles in the Southern region. 🚲 I was the last one in the group, it was not my best moment, but I did it!). So now I feel very legitimate to share my objective opinion in this discussion. 😝 Close to the Spanish border, surrounded by mountains and vineyards, the famous Cité de Carcassonne has a board game of the same name, which people all around the world know (read: keep reminding me about, especially in Asia & the US) but not in France. I just don't think I know any French person who has that game at home (or has ever played it). 🔸🔶🔸 Cité médiévale de Carcassonne 🔸🔶🔸 Déjà au IIème siècle av. JC, le site est un oppidum gaulois. Fortifié par les romains, il est ensuite occupé par les Wisigoths puis par les arabes jusqu’à ce que Pépin le Bref les chasse au VIIIème siècle. C’est réellement à partir du XIème siècle que la cité va prospérer sous le règne de la famille Trencavel. Au XIIIème siècle Carcassonne est accusée de complicité avec les Cathares et le pouvoir royal s’empare de la cité. ⚜️ Elle garantit là frontière entre la France et l’Aragon jusqu’au XVIIIème siècle. Au XIXème siècle, la cité de Carcassonne est au bord de la démolition et c’est alors qu’un grand chantier qui durera plus de 50 ans est entrepris pour sa restauration. Aujourd’hui une statue (réplique de l’originale datant du XVIème siècle ) de Dame Carcas accueille les visiteurs à l’entrée du pont Levis.
