Hot air ballooning is not everyone's sport, but if it is, visitors get rewarded with the most epic and hidden serenity worldwide. These epic attractions saw a surge in popularity as they served recreational purposes by letting folks relax and enjoy the beautiful views. Whether you prefer thriving wildlife breathing there or a seamless stretch of gorgeous landscape, hot air balloon rides are a once-in-a-lifetime experience to cherish.
While most hot air balloon rides are experienced at sunrise, you can choose the ones with an eventful evening. Hot air balloon rides are exciting either way. You get a new perspective to explore and enjoy the unique feeling of being in the high sky. There are a lot of hot air balloons across the world, offering stunning views. So, we have picked some of the best hot air balloon rides in the world.
Cappadocia, Turkey
Cappadocia is incredible, and you will know once you hop on to explore. Its chimney-shaped rock formations caused by volcanic eruptions, often known as the Monk Valley and its whimsical landscape, look beautiful when viewed from a hot air balloon. Cappadocia hot air balloon ride usually lasts 45 minutes and two hours, depending on your flight options and budget.
Sossusvlei, Namibia
Enjoy the ultimate cinematic experience as you witness the shifting red and orange dunes of the Namib desert. This is one of the best places for hot air balloon rides in the world, and it is even more enchanting when you get to explore the undiscovered grounds of Namibia. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to witness drifting over the hued sands under the spotless sky of Africa. The most convenient hot air balloon ride here is organized by hotels that do sunrise balloon rides as part of 3.5 hours of excursions.
Albuquerque, New Mexico
If you are in Albuquerque during October, you wouldn’t want to miss the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. This is the time when you witness the city becoming the hub of hot-air ballooning in the world. It is an annual event and the largest hot air balloon festival and race in the world, featuring corpus ascents with hundreds of balloons rising at once and catching the pace for racing competition. However, if you are here at another time, you can still experience a hot air balloon ride over the stunning mountain and landscape meeting point.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Dubai hot air ballooning is part of a desert adventure with various thrilling activities. Starting before dawn, you will be embarked from the city to the desert and witness the glorious sunrise over the epic Hajar mountains, floating around 4000 feet above the ground. Hot air balloon Dubai is truly an immersive experience where you get to enjoy different hues of the sun, watch a seamless stretch of the great Arabian desert, and spot the thriving wildlife of the desert, including gazelles, camels, and Arabian oryx.
Tuscany, Italy
Tuscany is one of the most beautiful destinations, boasting a golden and green landscape offering gorgeous views of villages and castles. Exploring Tuscany in a hot air balloon is considered one of the region's most romantic things to do. Who would want to get proposed to in an exotic location high up in the sky? You get treated to the most epic views, followed by a treat to a local and delicious Tuscan breakfast that brews farm-fresh products and ingredients, elevating your entire hot air ballooning tour.
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
You wouldn’t want to underestimate this hot air balloon ride as it rides over the ancient ruins enough to stun you. Cambodia, a hot air ballooning destination, covers over 500 acres and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, housing the world's most significant religious monuments. The region once served as the capital of the Khmer Empire, dating back to the 12th century, and its remains are well preserved today. Witnessing the breathtaking ruins from above at sunrise or sunset is truly an awe-inspiring experience.
Bernese Oberland, Switzerland
Well, observing sunrise over the mountains is beautiful, but witnessing sunrise over snow-capped peaks at 10,000 feet above sea level is unbeatable. Bernese Oberland's hot air ballooning is one of those unforgettable experiences in the world. With the Alps and beautiful snow-covered peaks, hot air balloon rides start from Chateaux d’Oex all year round. Bernese Oberland is also home to the annual International Balloon Festival in January.
Disney Springs, Walt Disney World, and Florida
You want to enjoy flying high in the sky but are terrified by the height. Try a tethered balloon ride at Disney Springs in Walt Disney World, which ascends around 400 feet and offers 360-degree views of the park. The ride lasts for about eight minutes and is affordable. On clear days, one can see the view as far as 10 miles from this enthralling hot air balloon experience.
Hot air balloon rides are an immersive experience; the perspective is so different when you are high in the sky. The rides are expensive but worth your exploration. These not only allow you a sense of relaxation but also feel like the perfect escape from the worries of your life. So, don’t forget to add hot air balloon rides to your next trip.

EUROPE TRIP PT2
The third day of the trip we were going to spend it on Prince's Islands. Before, catching the ferry out to the islands we feed ourselves a very big Turkisk breakfast to kick start our day. The coffee was very good too to our surprise a lot of places we went to served us Turkish coffee which very different what I normally have in Melbourne.
The Princes’ Islands are a cluster of 9 islands southeast of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara. We spent most of our time at the largest sland, Buyukada. We hired a bike and cycled around the island. I think it may be the most beautiful street I've ever been on. It was so grand and serene. It was like a dream.
We ferried our way back to the Asian side of Istanbul. We walked along the main street of shops and made our way back to our hotel.
Next day, we flew to Capppadocia where we stayed in a Cave Hotel called Anatolian House Caves Hotel which had its own pool. When we first arrived we chilled by the pool and had some of their late buffet breakfast. In the afternoon, I booked us an ATV tour to see the sunset. The ATV felt like an adventure across the desert. It was very dusty and the sunset was very pretty. The ATV tour allowed us to drive our own vehicle I wasn't very good at it so I sat behind Matt. I highly recommend get a mask for the dusty. We stopped at a few different spots to admire the natural landscape : Rose and Red Valleys. They all look very similar. We had dinner at our hotel.
Early morning, we woke up to do the hot airballon experience. The experience picked us up at the hotel 4am. I was quite scared of the hot air balloon. I was worried it would be unsafe, let's YOLO! It was very impressive to see the hot air balloon rise in front of you. It was so big. There were around 20 people in our hot air ballon. The hot air balloon moved very slowly , floating. You didn't even realise you were rising because it was so smooth. There were hardly any wind and everyone was silent. The views were breathtaking and speechless I felt so at peace and happy. Nothing really mattered but the present moment I felt so alive. So much beauty to absorbed! It was my favourite experience. The pilot was so experienced that she lowered the balloon to the city centre and floated and turned the hot air balloon 360 and she landed on the trailer. The experience finished with a glass of champagne and a cerfticate that I fly in a hot air balloon. The tour drove us back at the hotel. We rested for a few hours before we went on our next tour.
Our next tour was the red tour which started at 9.30am like the other tour it came and picked us up. The tour stopped a number of spots and the tour guide was very engaging : Uchisar Castle, Goreme National Park, Love Valley, Fairy Chimneys, Avanos and Devrent Valley. While I was at the Love Valley there was arcade of stalls selling souvenirs I bought my happy apple made of white onyx and injected my happiness into it. I was very happy at that very moment. I wanted to remember with a physical object.
The next morning I requested the hotel to organise breakfast on one of their roof tops so we can watch the sunrise and the hot airballoons. It was one of my favourite activity. The food was alright it was more for the view. After the breakfast we made our way to the airport where we fly to Istabul then to Athens and final stop Santorini.

Pitted Spelunking Caves
The name Cappadocia, it should be known, does not come from the caves that dot the extinct volcano landscape or the hot air balloons. It actually is a name given to the region due to the quality horses that roamed the area. And, in fact, there were plenty of horse statues scattered around on the streets, thus prompting the question to our tour guide: what’s with all the horses?
Waking early to, once more, make our 8AM daily departure, we headed down to the local caves to enjoy crawling through the remnants of what the Chrstians from ye olden times had dug out when they had still been persecuted by the Romans in the first few centuries CE.
We saw kitchens, a small church, storage areas, sleeping rooms and a wine cellar! Many of the tunnels within the cave system were small and tight, forcing our tour group to travel in single file. While it was cramp for us, and any curious tourists, in the context of the times, it made perfect sense for the Christians to make the tunnels as claustrophobic as possible. If the enemy ever inflitrated the caves, their large numbers would not avail them. The tunnels, being so narrow and tight, would serve as a perfect death trap for large armies. There was even a stone door with a hole in its centre. One in which someone could spear a person on the other side if they attempted to break through the hard rock.
After wending our way through the confusing labyrinth of caves and tunnels, we escaped and made a quick stop at Goreme Onyx, passing by a prison along the way. There, we snapped photos of pigeons and fed them with seeds so that they could they hop their disease-ridden bodies up onto our arms for the perfect photo opportunity.
The scenery in and around the area was also incredibly unique in comparison to everything I’ve seen in the world. But while there were plenty of caves here as well, they were meant to house pigeons and not humans.
From there, we made several pit stops around the area before lunch, the pictures are below. In one of them, I managed to take a photo of a Shetland pony! At least, I think it is. In any case, it’s a small miniature horse and cute as heck! There were also camels but the owner was going to charge me an entire Euro! No, thank you! I’ll delete my photo rather than pay an exorbitant amount for a simple photograph!
Lunch was at the Uranos Sarikaya where we enjoyed stewed beef and potato. For dessert, I had a baklava. And it was so good!
Like the hotel we were staying in, the restaurant itself were caves that had repurposed for a novel experience. It was fine dining at its best, although I did fear something akin to The Menu. Luckily, I am not especially wealthy and feel like I could have pulled off a cheeseburger moment a la Anya Taylor Joy’s character from the film.
Once we had eaten our fill, we then ventured to the Goreme Open Museum where early Christians in the region built churches in the malleable rock. Unfortunately, due to Turkish law, photos of the muals inside were forbidden without a permit. Suffice it to say, most of those were religious iconography pertaining to Jesus’s life. There were also a few Saints and a wickedly long serpent.
Of note was a church called the Dark Church. Why was it given such a moniker? Because it was bloody dark inside with the only light source a small opening. Creative, these people are not!
Still, had it not been for the fact that it received so little sunlight, many of the murals have been bleached out over the centuries. So, at least we got to see what the inside of the Dark Church had looked like originally.
That done, we returned to our hotel.
But I barely had a moment’s rest before joining another jeep safari. This time, we would be exploring the rugged landscape of Capapdocia, driving down into the deep gullies and ravines that we had seen from a distance earlier. WIth the rain, however, the sights and sounds of Cappadocia felt incredibly inferior to what we had witnessed in the Egyptian desert. And because it was so cold and wet, I was quick to return to the land cruiser in a desperate bid to stay warm rather than stand out in the rain to snap shots of the scenery.
I mean, I still did but the fun had lost its lustre.
By 4:30PM, we returned to the hotel and I took the opportunity until dinner to pen my thoughts down for the day (you’re welcome future me) as well as down some cold medicine as the near freezing conditions of Turkiye were starting to get to me.

If some of y'all Americans have heard of Cappadocia, it's likely because of some list on the internet saying Top Places To Go On A Hot Air Balloon, There are balloons everywhere in the area. Balloon statues, balloon souvenirs, men who take your tour group picture at Goreme Open Air Museum and photoshop balloons on the sky. (It was kitsch!) Prices were commiserate, a bit cheaper, honestly, than doing it back home in, say, Colorado.
My tour stayed three nights in Cappadocia, so that meant three possible opportunities for hot air ballooning.
Tried the first morning, got up at the crack of dawn, wore all my layers, drove in a van to presumably the waiting area, nothing. Learned that rain isn't why a balloon can't go up, it's wind. Wind and lightning strikes are about the only thing keeping a hot air balloon from going up. Disappointed, but that's okay. We'll try again tomorrow. Sure, I got up early, but I had a nice little breakfast of a surprisingly good prepackaged croissant and peach juice. yum.
Woke up the next morning at the crack of dawn and, oh baby, it's a go. We drove past so many balloons getting fired up until, finally, we were in our spot. We got out of the van. Men helped us in the basket. And we went up. Oh my god. I took hundreds of pictures.
The scenery, as you've seen from my posts on the ground, is gorgeous, of course. But the kicker is that hot air ballooning is /the/ thing to do when you're in Cappadocia. So it's not just a handful of balloons. Oh no. It's tens, dozens, it's more hot air balloons than I will see simultaneously in my life unless I go to the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Festival.
It was worth every penny.
(I'm giving you the text in advance so I can just throw up pictures)
also: I felt very safe! A woman on our tour is scared of heights and went anyway and even she was fine. You don't go super far up, all things considered, because the landscape itself is low. It was a very smooth experience. Our balloon operator was so good he landed exactly on the truck bed - we saw the balloon landing next to us have to make the people do bunny hops to gain altitude.

In fact, more than half of the world’s balloon flights take place here. Even if ballooning isn’t your thing, Cappadocia still has plenty to offer. With its cave hotels, flavorful cuisine, rich history, and scenic hiking trails, it appeals to every type of traveller. In this guide, we’ll cover how to get there, where to stay, and the must-see sights. Let’s dive into the magic of this captivating region!
Cappadocia Is A Land Shaped by History
Cappadocia, a region steeped in history, has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Over the centuries, it has seen the rise and fall of various civilizations, including the Hittites, Persians, Romans, early Christians, Byzantines, Seljuk Turks, and Ottomans.
Perhaps best known for its role as a refuge for early Christians fleeing Roman persecution, Cappadocia boasts thousands of hand-carved dwellings, churches, and underground cities. These remarkable structures, resembling scenes from a Star Wars movie, have captivated visitors for centuries. While George Lucas reportedly sought to film portions of the original Star Wars trilogy in Cappadocia, the Turkish government declined the request.
Today, Cappadocia is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a major tourist destination in Turkey. Drawing millions of visitors annually (3.8 million in 2019 alone), it offers a unique blend of stunning landscapes, historical sites, and unforgettable experiences.
📍 Cappadocia's Location
Cappadocia is nestled in central Turkey, with the bustling city of Kayseri serving as the nearest major hub. The region encompasses several charming towns, including Goreme, Uchisar, and Urgup. Goreme is renowned for its luxurious accommodations and a vibrant culinary, because of this it has emerged as a favored starting point for many travelers.
🧳 The way to Reach Cappadocia
The most convenient way to reach Cappadocia is via a domestic flight from Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW) to Kayseri Airport (ASR). Multiple daily flights connect these two destinations, and travel time is approximately 1.5 hours. One-way tickets can be as affordable as 150 Liras ($20 USD).
Upon arriving in Kayseri, you'll need a van transfer to reach Goreme, the heart of Cappadocia, about a 1-hour drive away. Your hotel can assist you with arranging this transfer, or you can book it online.
For budget-friendly options, pre-book shared airport transfers from reputable providers for as low as $7 USD per person. If you prefer a more private experience, private airport transfers are available for around $30 USD.
🏨 Finding Your Home in Cappadocia
The majority of Cappadocia’s hotels are located in the towns of Goreme, Uchisar, and Urgup, with Goreme being the top choice for visitors. Devrent Valley is a captivating destination renowned for its extraordinary natural rock formations.
