oda is so good at character writing, i’m almost done w whole cake rn and bege is so well written

like he’s introduced as a cold blooded murderer who tried to kill a protagonist because he had empathy and that was “weak” and oda somehow managed to make him a likable character by having him love his wife, kid, and crew so much

idk what happens after whole cake, i might go back to hating him again, but his character for this arc is amazing

also the way pez has a binky that looks like his dads cigar is so cute even though bege will definitely get lung cancer

I’m sorry but why is Whole Cake Island coming right for the kokoro by making me care about all these side characters???

First of all I’m way more invested in Bege and Chiffon than I thought I’d be. Their lil family is fucking adorable and Bege casually loving his wife as much as he does despite them being an arranged marriage by Big Mom is so damn sweet.

Then you got me devastated for Pound, Chiffon and Lola’s dad??? A gag character who was introduced as a giant head in the ground that I literally forgot about?? But turns out Big Mom used him to make children and then he never got to meet those children. And when he finally had a chance to meet one, he kept getting held back from meeting her. So he did the next best thing and defended her and helped her escape despite her not knowing who he is?? And he saw his grandchild who seems to sense his grandfather and his last words (idk if he’s fully dead yet or not) were to congratulate Chiffon on her marriage???

bege and chiffon’s relationship is actually amazing. i think they’re my favorite canon ship (not just because his body is actually made of canons) in one piece ngl. they’re so devoted to each other and completely trust each other in everything they do. i think chiffon definitely brings the best out of bege. i used to hate him for what he did to pekoms but he’s such a good dad and husband i can’t even be mad at him.

Capone Bege is one of the few people Crocodile respects in the One Piece underworld because he's actually involved and invested in his child's upbringing, and a loyal husband to boot. Croc doesn't make it a habit of prying into people's personal lives for non-blackmail reasons, but most of the other pirates, brokers, and gang members he's come across are sleazeballs who don't lift a finger to help their partners or want anything to do with their kids unless it's taking the credit for an x chromosome.

His respect for Bege only really came about after he got out of Impel Down and into the New World. Before, he had thought the man was weak for letting people into his heart like that, wife and child or no.

Hypocritical of him to say, really, but he’s far from above hypocrisy. It comes with the territory of piracy.

Funnily enough, He finds himself chatting with Bege about how to… you know… not let their own paranoia stifle the kids they raise? Nika knows Luffy turned out amazingly given what he’s had to go through, but then again the kid is a D. And not just any D either, a Monkey D.

He just worries for Gabriel, Gryphon, and Nemo… He doesn’t to hold on too tightly, yet he doesn’t want them to feel as though he’s not trustworthy to give them support when they need it.

Bege understands that well, and they talk. One father with a target on his back to another.

Eustass "Captain" Kid and Massacre Soldier Killer: Completely defeated at Elbaf by Red-Haired Shanks who took their poneglyph rubbings for himself before destroying the Victoria Punk. It is highly unlikely that the Kid Pirates can continue to exist in any meaningful way.

Surgeon of Death Trafalgar( D. Water) Law: Defeated by Blackbeard at Winner Island, but evacuated by Bepo. Polar Tang sunk, all other Heart Pirates captured, presumably relocated to Hachinosu/Fullaled. Poneglyph rubbings presumably now in Blackbeard's possession.

"Red Flag" X Drake: Recovering at GS Marine Hospital from near-fatal injuries sustained during the Battle of Onigashima. Fate of the remaining Drake Pirates unknown.

The Magician, Basil Hawkins: Fate unknown. Presumed "dead"(but since this is One Piece he's almost certainly alive somewhere).

Roar of the Sea Scratchmen Apoo: Survived the Battle of Onigashima by defecting to the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance. Was the one who leaked the battle's outcome to the World Economic Journal, and has probably been feeding Morgans info for some time now. On-Air Pirates remain intact; whereabouts unknown.

Capone "Gang" Bege: After betraying Big Mom and succeeding in the raid on her tea party, the Firetank Pirates travelled to Dressrosa where Lola and Chiffon reunited. Lola finally found a husband in Vito(that guy whose tongue was always sticking out), Bege's chief subordinate and adviser. I'm not talking about the other thing that happened because it was really dumb.

Mad Monk Urogue: Unknown. Last seen at the end of Dressrosa, recovering from wounds sustained in his fight with Charlotte Cracker.

Jewelry Bonney: Currently accompanying the Straw Hat Pirates. At some point during the timeskip(or just before it, if it happened at the same time as that one scene with her, Blackbeard and Akainu) the Bonney Pirates were captured by the Marines shortly upon entering the New World. Bonney herself was the only one who managed to escape captivity, ultimately winding up first at the Reverie and then at Egghead.

12. What’s a headcanon you have for this character?

I have afew, I’ll share some of them! One was that when Lola departed and Chiffon was left to bear Big Mom’s upsets with her twin, she had become more withdrawn and complacent to her situation. She never blamed Lola, however. Chiffon really started to become herself again as she spent time with Bege and his crew over the two years. That while it may have been love at first sight for Bege, it was not so for her. Chiffon was terrified and not pleased at all with her forced arranged marriage to a pirate with such an infamously bloody and brutal reputation. Chiffon is very hands on in everything in a way that can sometimes seem overbearing or boisterous. It’s not that she’s forceful, it might be a side effect of royalty that she can speak with authority very well and because of that, few will question it.

13. What's an emoji, an emoticon and/or any symbol that reminds you of this character or you think the character would use a lot?

Cake slice emoji. I always use the little piece of cake with the strawberry on it. 🍰

20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?

While they’ve definitely had screen time together, and shown to already be friendly with one another, I still think her and Nami would get along famously. They both have a streak of mischief and boldness in them that I think they could topple empires if they conspired together. I would also like to see her get to know Robin - I think Robin would remind her of her husband in certain ways. Speaking of toppling empires - Chiffon, Nami and Robin would be a scary team. And again they’ve had screen time and shown to be friendly to one another, with their mutual respect of and being artful in cooking she and Sanji would be great friends.

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

I looove making Chiffon not shy away at all from Bege’s darker tendencies and also be just an active part of the crime family/pirate crew. She certainly doesn’t always condone it, and I think her word is powerful and has changed Beges mind on many occasions of just choosing to put a bullet in the back of someone’s head (aka offering a deal to Pekoms to join them rather than just kill him a second time ), but she will help him get rid of the body with none the less support. Even if I feel like he’d rather not have her be in harms way, she reminds him she was part of Big Moms family - she’s use to this sort of thing! As for don’t like, I haven’t really seen enough fics for her to really pick something out. I guess I’m not fond of making her so mushy overly sweet? She is one of the few people who tells Capone Bege ‘no’ —and he listens! Bege may be captain/boss but he’ll do near anything for his wife and his crew/gang knows this and have a healthy respect for her too.

24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?

Sybil Vimes from Discworld —omg Sybil Vimes!! Two large women who are also royalty and wedded to smaller cigar smoking husbands with darker tendencies trying to do better for their wives and both are boisterous, passionate individuals, loving wives and amazing mothers?? Sybil has inspired some of my takes for Chiffon, definitely.

Ohh there’s afew. It’s hard to choose one. One that definitely reminds me of him that was recommended to me -😉- was: The Decemberists Here I Dreamt I was an Architect.

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?

I love when writers go into his complex relationships with Rosinante, Law or Viola or Tsuru. When they cater to his obvious sociopathic nature and impaired mental states, his past and the resulting complicated interactions he has with those he deems important to him. I like when they don’t forget he’s an absolutely terrible person (and just that is letting him off easy) but give him depth that he’s also lot more. I’m not a fan of ‘if doflamingo was nice’ or when his edges are sanded down. I highly recommend the fic Astra Inclinant from Petracore for Doffy enjoyers - it covers nearly every facet I enjoy about the character so well and more it’s…molto bene. 🤌

I absolutely love how Oda makes literary and real-world references in the way he names his characters (mostly Worst Generation members).

Don Quixote? Spanish novel (Rocinante is the name of the horse). Eustass 'Captain' Kid? I think any pirate worth their hook has heard of Captain Kidd. Blackbeard? Well DUH. 'X' Drake? That sounds to me like a reference to Francis Drake. Silvers Rayleigh? That feels like a cross between Long John Silver and Walter Raleigh. Capone 'Gang' Bege? You can't not know about Al Capone. Trafalgar Law? Bro, I can take the bus to Trafalgar Square that was named after a famous naval battle. Jewelry Bonney? Mary Bonney was one of the few known female pirates. Even Zoro - is it too much of a stretch to link him to another fictional swordsman named Zorro? I think somebody's already made a post about Absalom as well.
