BRUSSELS UNDER PRESSURE • The French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot warned in a radio interview on 8 January that if the European Commission does not firmly exercise its competences to protect public discourse online, it should leave Member States the freedom to take national measures.

Pressure is also mounting at the European Parliament. Last week, MEP Aurore Lalucq, chair of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, filed a complaint with Arcom, the French media regulator. She accuses X of breaching DSA rules by exploiting or manipulating algorithms to further the political objectives of Elon Musk.

For the time being, however, the Commission has adopted a cautious stance. It opened formal proceedings against X more than a year ago, in December 2023, of which the conclusions have not yet been made public. In the meantime, the Commission does not seem eager for new confrontations.
