After winning a week long holiday to a luxury island paradise, 11 college students find themselves at a deserted resort with no clues to where the guests and staff disappeared to, as all modes of escape are sabotaged, and communication with the outside world catastrophically cut off. The island holds dangers and secrets from across time, with a prehistoric predator stalking their every move, and time playing tricks on the group. Through it all, Steve is only sure of one thing; their pilot, Tony, means something to him. Something that feels older than the short time they’ve known each other.

But then again, it's Steve who impulsively declares that he and Tony are dating to teach Howard a lesson—which isn't true at all!—so maybe part of the mess is on him.

Cap-IM BB 2021: Writing Steve and Tony Across the Multiverse

What's at the center of any Cap-IM Big Bang story? Steve and Tony. 

Each universe has its own flavor of Steve and Tony, with different backstories and dynamics. Let that inspire your BB story! How does their characterisation drive the plot, create the complications, and help you reach a resolution?

If you're telling a story about Steve challenged by being in the present—has he made his peace with the present (616 or Avengers Assemble), is he angry and lost (Ults) or is he depressed and trying to find his place (MCU)? 

Is your Tony struggling with addictions and demons (616, 1872, Ults), is he a teenager learning how to be a superhero (Avengers Academy, Iron Man: Armoured Adventures), or is he happy-go-lucky (Marvel Adventures: Avengers)? 

Choose the universe that fits the story that you want to tell—or choose a universe and get Steve and Tony to show you around!

Are they:

Terrific teammates joined at the hip with a side of married spats

Out in the Wild West, fighting against corruption and tragedy

Learning the superhero ropes as teens

You can also turn what we know about a universe on its head! Play around with role reversals, draw out emotions and conflicts that you may not usually find in a story set in a specific universe, meld canons together, lift the characters into a different setting altogether… it's up to you!

Whatever story you end up writing, we're looking forward to seeing it.

Running since 2011, the Cap-Ironman Big Bang challenges the community's writers to create Steve/Tony-focused fic with a minimum of 25,000 words. Creators are then invited to claim a fic and create accompanying fanworks! To sign up as a writer you need to send us your 20,000 word draft and summary by September 15th 2021.

Big Bang season is well upon us, so it might be time to start looking for your beta right about now — those fics get looooong, so giving someone extra time to work through everything is always a good idea!

Whether you are looking for someone to reassure your ending is on point,

Need someone to pick out all your weird cut-and-paste errors and help with SPaG,

Want someone to figure out why that arm looks like it's at a weird angle,

Or double check your canon references,

A beta can help!

It's absolutely optional to have your work beta'd, but we do encourage you to do so — it can be hard to see bits that are off when you've been immersed in your work for a while, and having a cheer reader leave love-heart emoji can go a long way to boosting your confidence!

A beta can be someone you know, someone who's offered their services by being on a list or adding a pingable Discord role, or someone who approaches you after you post on a social media platform that you're looking for a bit of help. Read through our Beta Resource Post for a thorough guide on beta readers, from how to find one to tips on how to be one.

Jump into our very own list of Active Steve/Tony Beta Readers, which has been newly updated, and get in touch with a kind soul who can help cheer you on or beta your work. You can also post a beta request in our #general-stony channel on our Cap-IM Discord server.

There are also other beta reading databases out there, including the multifandom Beta File, betaplease Dreamwidth, Beta Reader Wanted Tumblr; the beta search and find-me-a-beta Livejournal communities; or on fanfiction.net (for the Marvel films and the Marvel comics). Some are more active than others — a lot of beta readers can now be found in Discord communities, ready to be summoned with an @, so if you're active in a Stony Discord, we suggest trying your luck there, too!

2021 Cap-Iron Man Big Bang Claims are open!

Claiming creators, it's time to claim your story for the 2021 Captain America/Iron Man Big Bang!

Before you submit your claims list and get paired up with a fantastic fic, make sure that you've read the claims post in full! This way, there won't be any surprises in your future, and you'll be fully prepared for the challenge.

At this stage, each fic will only be paired up with a single claiming creator, so consider your choices carefully!

The Cap-Iron Man Big Bang is a Steve/Tony fest where writers work to create a story of 25K words or more, and artists (including giffers and manippers), fanvidders and podficcers create an accompanying work based on the story they claim.

Please make sure to read over all the event guidelines, even if you’ve participated in our Big Bang before. We’d like to highlight the new eligible fanworks you can create from this year’s event onwards (as per the Community Survey that took place in early 2021).

Accompanying fanwork minimum requirements from claiming creators are:

at least one traditional or one digital artwork

a fanvid of at least one minute

a fanmix with cover art (writers must opt in)

a podfic of at least one scene (writers must opt in)

at least two manips or gifs (writers must opt in)

Writers can still submit a draft for claims if it is ~80% complete and 20K or over, but stories must be complete if you want to opt into being claimed by a podficcer.

This year, our Discord #bb channel is open as a semi-moderated space all day every day! At this stage, we ask that only prospective writers request the role, so that they can talk about their stories freely and share their progress with each other without giving it away before claims!

Cap-IM BB 2021: Pace yourself and get that draft in!

The draft submission deadline for the Cap-IM BB 2021 is drawing nearer.

One of the questions that pops up around BBs very often is: HOW DO I GET TO THAT WORDCOUNT? Whether you usually write shorter fic, or you get epic plot ideas that fizzle out before you can reach the ending, it can be intimidating to think about writing 25,000 words.

Keep in mind: Everyone is different. People develop their own process over time - and often it changes. So there really is no one-fits-all solution to how you become a BB length fic writer. But in trying we hope you’ll come out with a draft for a new SteveTony story to delight the fandom - whether it made the deadline or met the wordcount or not. Any fic that gets finished is a win for all of us!

Here are some tips that might help while you’re racing towards that finish line:

Know where you’re going!

Sometimes when you’re stuck it helps to know what you’re trying to go towards. What is the ending to your story? Try to think about the endgame. Outline the steps and definite scenes you have planned out and make notes for the things that are missing. Then you have a rough outline (that you can still adapt and change while writing) and you’ll see how much of it you’ve already written and how much writing is still ahead of you.

Don’t worry if things don’t go exactly as planned - sometimes a story will sprawl out of control and get longer than you thought it’d be, but it will be easier to stay on track if you know where the train is heading for.

Remember this is still a draft!

Perfectionism can get in the way. You’re stuck because a scene and dialogue aren’t coming out right? Leave it and move on to the next scene regardless. You can tell yourself you can do this all day and tire yourself out with getting one paragraph polished to perfection... but this is still a draft. It doesn’t have to be perfect yet.

Sometimes it’s better to write out all these imperfect words, get the draft in and afterwards take a hard look and improve on what you have - for example with the help of a beta reader. It’s easier to improve when a draft already exists.

You only need to submit a complete fic by our September 15th deadline if you would like to opt in to be claimed by a podfic creator.

Pace yourself!

We all know it and most of us have been there: the deadline draws closer and we’ve put everything off to the last minute. After all, if he has to, Tony can build Iron Man armor from scratch in one night! And we’re not saying we don’t know people who have written their 20K draft in one weekend…

But not everyone can go at that pace and it will be less stressful even for those who can, to start a little earlier. You may be the kind of writer who knows they can do 9-10K in a day if the pressure is on, but why not try to spread that out more in case something comes up last-minute?

Try to set yourself word or scene goals for each week. Don’t forget to leave a little breathing room for yourself and work towards that finished draft at a steady pace.

2021 Cap-IM BB one week till draft submissions & upcoming writers’ chat

There's just one week left until the 2021 Cap-IM Big Bang drafts are due!

This is a friendly reminder that story drafts are due by the very end of 15 September ("What time is that for me?"). Send us yours to cap.im.events@gmail.com following the protocol listed in our Writers’ Guidelines and you’re all signed up for the Bang!

On 16 September, a preview post showing all the fic summaries and claiming instructions will go up, and then on 18 September at 08:00 EDT ("What time is that for me?"), claims will open. Remember that you do not need to claim a fic yourself if the time doesn't suit; you can ask someone to proxy-claim for you. Anonymous comments will be enabled on the claims post.

Please keep in mind that summaries are posted anonymously during claims, so we urge you to be tactful about revealing any fic details during the pre-claim period. If you need to drop out, you must do so before your work has been claimed; because this is a collaborative challenge, there is no penalty-free drop out after this point.
