To answer your prom question; ish?

At least at my school there were 3 school dances a year; Homecoming, Winter Formal, and (for Juniors and Seniors only) Prom. There are other school events, but those are the major social events and the ones everyone can participate in. (Like, different sport and clubs would have events, but there’s not the same appeal).

Prom is sort of a right of passage because of the age restriction and since they’re sometimes held off school grounds. (It’s kind of fun, but definitely way over hyped imo)

Media often fails to mention that, since the protagonists are kids, there also really isn’t much else going on often outside of school dances so that also gives them more gravitas lol.

TL;DR Prom isn’t a high schoolers whole life, but it’s kind of a milestone since they don’t have as many responsibilities/freedoms yet.

That makes so much sense.

also hard agree on the lack of non interest-specific activities. Think in Korea we had the same deal where we never meet up for anything unless we are into something specific. 'Cept for monthly exams and no one's having a party then lol.

OOOOOOH and yeah every year older was such a big deal back in high school. all yer upperclassmen seemed so adult lolololol. So the age cutoff being a milestone totes makes sense.

Last question would be: was prom queen and king actually a thing? and if so: are they separate categories? Like 1st place in 400m female division, and 1st place in 400m male division. Or is it more of a set deal like in pair figure skating? Where it's like the gold medal goes to Jane and Jon Doe.

AND DO THEY DOOOO ANYTHING? like once nominated(?)/elected(?)/ascended(?) do they have some duties as prom royalty? serve the prom people?
