the long way home | jenson/shov | 577 words
inspired by this list -> “Pull over.  Let me drive for awhile.”
The night drive back to Monte-Carlo was uneventful for Shov. He stared with his head tilted slightly at the unending road.  It was the perfect night to drive. The roads weren't busy, the sky was clear, and a breeze began to pick up, cooling down the car while he silently drove him and Jenson back home.
And yet he could feel himself getting tired. It was getting difficult to even look at the road. Shov began to feel his eyes droop from looking onwards. He yawned loudly, slouching forward to try and focus.
Usually Jenson was the one to drive them everywhere. But Shov was insistent on taking the reins for the ride home from their trip. Jenson knew the vague comment about the amount of driving he did made Shov guilty. He didn't mean to. But now Shov was being stubborn.  He wasn't going to fight, even seeing Shov's closed off body language and doubt about the whole thing.
Shov continued on the open road, gripping the wheel as he tried to keep his mind occupied. He had used Jenson as a way to stay awake, with him talking through the drive.  But he had fallen asleep a bit ago, leaned back and completely quiet.  Shov felt his whole body twitching, his hands fully holding onto that wheel tightly. He sighed. Just a little longer.  He blinked.
“Baby…”
Shov heard Jenson's familiar voice, slightly strained and groggy.
“Pull over. Let me drive for a while.” Jenson said. Shov glanced over. His eyes were half open. He smirked at Shov. How long had he been awake for?
Suddenly, Shov perked up and adjusted his body. “No no, I'm fine Jenson.” He assured him.
“I can tell you're tired.” Jenson responded.
“Just a little, love. But we've only got a bit to go.” Shov retorted.
“Come on Shov. It's no big deal. I can take over.”
“No, I've got it.”
Jenson watched Shov for a brief moment, his body slouching back and his eyes sinking once again. He leaned over.
“Shov. You're about to fall asleep mate. If you keep driving you're going to trap us in a ditch. Now, pull over and let me drive.” Jenson stared at Shov for a moment. Shov quickly looked over before going back to the road. He paused.
He slowed the car down, stopping it by the side of the road. Shov turned on the car light.
“I hate when you're the voice of reason.” Shov muttered, opening the driver door.
Jenson laughed, doing the same on his side.  They both quickly switched sides. Jenson adjusted his seat.  He grinned. Shov sighed, leaning his head on the window while watching Jenson get back on the road.  It was steady at first, then Jenson slowly ramped up the speed. The noise of the car echoed down the empty road, rattling the car's engine.
“Easy, Jenson.” Shov said.
“Hey! I'm the driver here.” Jenson teased.
“I suppose. Both on the track and the road, huh? Can't help yourself?”
“Exactly mate! You get it.”
Shov smiled, shaking his head. Some things between them never change. He opened his mouth, about to quip about how he's the engineer between them, something about telling him how to manage the car. But he held back.
Jenson took one more glance at Shov. His head leaned on the window, already asleep, snoring to himself. He laughed. Some things never change. Jenson thought.
Some things didn't need to change.
