I enjoy wines that have a bit of age on them but that doesn't mean they are expensive. You can find well aged value wines such as Rioja, Gattinara, Arbois, Gattinara, and of course, Ghemme! A perfect example is Ca’Nova’s Ghemme 2009 which is made from 100% Nebbiolo. Ghemme is a red Italian wine with DOCG status produced in the Colli Novaresi area in the hills of Novara in Piedmont. The wine is made primarily from the Nebbiolo grape varietal (known locally as Spanna). A minimum of 3 years total aging is required, including a minimum 20 months in wood and 9 months in bottle. Ca’Nova’s Ghemme is aged in large, nuetral oak casks for 24 months and aged 24 months in bottle before release. At 13.5% alcohol, this wine is smooth and balanced with fine tannins that are typical of aged Nebbiolo. Ghemme is a gorgeous dark ruby red with a pretty perfumed nose which is quite intense. The wine highlights cherry, tobacco, and violet notes on both the nose and the palate.
