Okay, so I was reading the thing with street magician Anakin again and I saw how you were using 'Mireus' as a first name for Palps because we didn't know about 'Sheev' yet and I was thinking: if Palpatine is a political name like Amidala is, there's really no reason not to recycle Mireus into the Emperor's birth surname??? If that's something you'd want to do???

Anon I still don’t “know” about Sheev.

Sure, the Expanded Universe says that’s Palpatine’s given name, and that Palpatine is his surname, but as I’m frequently disclaiming, I don’t actually consider the Expanded Universe canon and don’t particularly care what it says.

Sheev is, I’ll grant you, objectively hilarious as a bit of crack, but I don’t think it actually works as a serious proposition in universe, because Palpatine is Naboo, and “Sheev” sounds nothing like any of the canon Naboo names we know. Most Naboo names either look and sound like they’re derived from Space Latin (e.g. Amidala, Sola, and the name Palpatine itself) or Sanskrit (Padme, Pooja). Some of them are real names or words in various real world languages, but they all follow a pattern of similar sounds, and Sheev just...really doesn’t fit into that pattern.

I originally made up the name Mireus because it looks like Space Latin, and I thought it would therefore be a good fit with Palpatine (which sounds like Palatine, a pretty fitting name for an emperor). I actually considered naming him “Augustus,” but I thought that was a little too obvious even for me.

Back then I was still assuming that Palpatine was his surname, and now I’m much more inclined to think it’s a name of state and we don’t actually know either of his names. But, even so, if I ever go back to the Simple Tricks and Nonsense AU, I will probably still call him “Palpatine,” because that’s the name that’s familiar to the audience.

Anyway, tl;dr is that Sheev is hilarious as crack but I’m never gonna accept it as canon, and my Palpatine’s given name is still Mireus.
