Some thoughts on Zulay (to those that care 😂, though mostly to the void)

I wanted to write a little bit about the differences between my Zulay (and by extension, Word) and canon! As per the QnA’s from Rob, Zulay was someone I imagine to be kinder, and unfortunately lacking a bit of agency in her life as an evil overlord’s wife. Despite loving him, I like to think her relation with Word was very imbalanced, in that he only tolerated/would dismiss her opinions. Canon Word could’ve been an abusive asshole to his fridged wife, basically. Zulay, despite her fearlessness/prowess in racing, loses much of that element of her identity (which Word loved), when she retires to start a family in Sun City. Canon Zulay’s death was an end to any distraction Word once had. Word’s eventual “redemption” (Which is what I think Rob hoped to do), would involve him having to somehow scrape affection/care he’s never managed to show to even Zulay.

My Zulay on the other hand, is a direct opposite of this, and the power imbalance is the other way round. (Even Abyll, who in canon is Word’s best friend, is actually Zulay’s right hand man. Essentially being Word’s superior or equal.) I imagine Word to have been in a rough spot as a foreigner to Down City after being expelled. Zulay sees this and his skills with tech, decides to recruit him etc., the thought being: She wants to equip her Dragon Eye crew with the best weapons, make bank, and get to Sun City. Conquering the world after living in the dumps of Down City, basically. Already well versed with crime, her influence on Word is a negative one, technically, but they both get on the same page eventually. Her death leads to Word’s grief-fueled need to conquer the world, in her name. This tragedy eventually leads to a somewhat believable redemption arc for Word, where he abandons his plans/moves on from Zulay’s death for Moordryd’s sake, IMO.

Anyway, TLDR, I’ve drafted a version of Word/Zulay and the characters surrounding them that I adore way too much 😂 Thought to distinguish how all my work is technically AU, as much as I’d like it to be canon!

I think I care too much for this show’s plot and characters lol, when everyone is here for the dragons :’) I just think, for all the dragon stuff to work, we need characters who drive the story forward/have something to say to have more concrete motivations/arcs with satisfying resolutions. ALAS.

My final words on this is that idk if I’ll ever explore “canon” Zulay and Word, and the black and white/simplicity of Word’s villainy. I enjoy his tumultuous relationship with Moord and incredibly cheesy/cute relationship with Zulay too much. Canon Word/Zulay just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, because she is a fridged mom, and purely a “womb” for Moordryd/ Moord’s goodness lol. Bahhhhhhh
