Digicam Diaries I: SD1300

A few months ago I found a camera that I had long since forgotten about. It was packed away in some boxes and hadn’t been touched in years. Luckily, it was in the original box and the charger was right there so I plugged it in and charged up the battery. After a few hours, I came back to check on the battery and it was fully charged. I popped it in the camera and it fired right up. The Canon Powershot SD1300 was one of the first digital cameras I had back in 2010. Simple and easy to use, 12mp, ccd sensor, and small enough to put in your pocket. In all honesty, when I first found this camera I picked it up for shits and giggles, I figured I’d play with it a little bit and I instantly got addicted. Which is funny because 12 years ago, I remember having this camera and being frustrated because the controls on it were limited and I really wanted a DSLR. Flash forward and these are the things I love about it. Once you get the hang of using the camera and making the most out of the limited control that you have, you can really get some cool images out of it. Now days, I throw it in my pocket almost everyday and probably take more photos on it than I take with my phone. Sure you only can shoot jpegs but there is something about the ccd sensor that does it for me. With some basic tweaks in Lightroom, you can really achieve a nice vintage look. Over the last 3-4 months it has come with me on some adventures, a few shoots, and documented everyday life. From morning walks with the dogs to my daughter making a funny face at dinner. The photos above were both taken from the same spot on the shore of Lake Myvatn in eastern Iceland. The sunset was September 9, 2011, and the sunrise, with a superb Belt of Venus, was the following morning. At the latitudes of Iceland, the sunset seemed to go on for a long time with many variations of color and shadow. In between the sunset and sunrise, we were treated to a wonderful display of the Northern Lights. Unfortunately, my little camera was not up to capturing the subtleties of the aurora. In Icelandic, myvatn means something like "lake of the extremely annoying little gnats" which fill the air in summer and provide food for migrating waterfowl.

Archive - Pseudocraters at Stakholstjorn Lake, Iceland Photographer and Summary Author: Rebecca Roush

Each Sunday we present a notable item from our archives. This EPOD was originally published July 6, 2012.

This photo was taken while on a walk around Stakholstjorn Lake in Iceland. The lake is circled by an easy footpath laced among the many Skutustadargigar pseudocraters. About 2,000 years ago, hot lava flowed over what was then swampy ground. The swamp water was pretty much vaporized instantly and the resulting steam blasted these holes in the covering rock. Pseudocraters are also called rootless cones because they have no direct connection with any magma chambers, nor do they vent lava. The divergent boundary of the North American and European continental tectonic plates runs through this part of Iceland making the region very volcanically active. Scientists were able to witness the formation of pseudocraters for the first time on March 25, 2010, during the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano. Other pseudocraters are near Lac Pavin, a crater lake in France, and on Mars. The latter may be evidence of water on the Red Planet. Photo taken September 9, 2011.
