umm if we can exit the realm of fandom when i was a kid i used to devour shrimp but suddenly started hating it for most of my life. i'm just getting back into it now tho it's p good

Dad took some steps today. He needed the therapist right there because he was so off balance that he would’ve fallen without support along with his walker. One of his feet is curling sideways and inward because he hasn’t been putting weight on his feet. That will be a problem and he may need a brace to straighten that out. It’s related to the whole “don’t use it and you lose it” aspect of Parkinson’s disease, and I was afraid of this.

I hope he gets to walk again as much as he could before because he will be stuck in one room for the rest of his life if he doesn’t. I think that’s the one incentive that makes him want to get back on his feet. My fear is he will then proceed to get up at night like he was doing when he got hurt in the first place. He still keeps mom awake till 3 and 4am because she’s a people pleaser who will give until she’s dead. Black hole people like my dad love finding bleeding hearts like my mom.

I’ve told mom to just put her foot down and go to bed, but I stayed up once to see what really happens. Dad whines and complains if mom says she’s going to bed. Suddenly he will want to be put on his bedside commode (which takes forever and then you wait for him to go and heave him back into bed), or he will want a sandwich or just anything that makes mom have to be busy on his behalf until she’s wide awake again when she was sleepy enough for bed before.

Just...AUGH...every good thing always comes with shit right behind it.

I think I’m going to ask my counselor or psychiatrist if there’s a way to screen for ptsd. My mental health is in the toilet and I’m having bizarre dreams and nightmares several times a week. My sleep is disrupted now, and that’s never been a thing for me. I’m constantly hyper vigilant. I’m having anger outbursts and the kinds of thoughts that intrude upon my mind are horrible.

If something happens to mom, I am helpless in all the issues that matter. Food, I can figure out, but I’m worse than useless for everything else. I cannot move dad to his commode or wheelchair, and he needs some support to move onto them. I’m too small, he outweighs me by over 100 pounds.

Most of my bad dreams are things happening to my mom, or there’s word that something happened and I can’t get any info on if she’s okay or not. Another kind I have is I’ve contracted COVID, or someone who comes in to see us has it and spreads it, and I’m the only survivor. Other dreams are the body horror type where I amputate my own body parts with a saw and hand them to people because I feel useless. I had one recently where I literally ran up to Hannibal Lecter with a knife and fork and told him to eat me, but he took the silverware away and wouldn’t do it because “no, you’re not rude.” I said I was, but he wouldn’t do it. I was so angry! I was angry about that dream all day!

I don’t believe I deserve anything good and I don’t see myself as a good person. I don’t deserve help.

I’m scared a lot. Just...I can be sitting here watching a cute kitten video on YouTube or eating dinner and get hit with a wave of fear.

None of this is how my mind usually works. I’ve never been in mortal danger(recently), but I’ve had my routines and life disrupted to such severe degrees that I feel like I’ve lost control of my life, and to me that’s almost the same thing as dying. I’m autistic, and autistic people are more prone to trauma from ‘mundane’ things that a neurotypical person wouldn’t flinch at.

I’m just worried the “not life-threatening” aspect will immediately disqualify a diagnosis.

In June 2019, I went into burnout after home health visits for dad threw all my routines away and they’re still getting destroyed by it because they can’t keep a consistent fucking routine.

July that year was my dad getting his DBS batteries replaced. It was sensory hell because I got my period the day of the surgery and spent the whole time nauseated and cramping, but being silent about it...only to get called selfish and horrible for mentioning how bad I felt after we were all home again. (Outpatient surgery)

September 2019, mom’s gallbladder almost blew up and she was rushed to the hospital. I was alone with dad, without warning, and had to function using emergency reserves that I didn’t have because I was in burnout. I ran around terrified that any mistake I made would get me screamed at by both my dad and sister. Mom was out of the house from Friday to Tuesday. Dad did nothing but demand and demand from me and yelled at me for melting down. I was almost out of meds and for awhile didn’t know if or when I would get them. I had to grocery shop with sister’s help and she kept getting upset at me for arranging the cart like mom did, and I ended up forgetting things I needed even though I had a list right in front of my face the whole time. I was that out of it.

An aid had to come bathe dad because mom couldn’t do it for at least six weeks. That happened whenever someone could come, so dinner, my showers and mom’s ability to do things were disrupted by waiting for the call that the aid was coming. Coverage only lasted six weeks and then the help was yanked the second mom was declared fit to lift more than 5 pounds again.

October 2019, our car died and so routines got thrown further out of whack because mom and I had to depend on friends and family for rides to grocery shop or go to church. Trips stopped being at a set time and turned into “whenever someone can drive you” so I was uprooted from my day with little warning, and we didn’t get a new car until early December.

December 2019: We Christmas shopped late because of the car bullshit, mom barely got the cookies baked in time, and it was just a super stressful Christmas season.

I struggled through the death anniversary of my dog because that year he was gone as many years as he had lived and I spent most of it in a disassociated state.

Then mom had her bowel obstruction the day after Christmas and was in the hospital from Friday to Sunday. Yet again she was gone and the routine was blown apart without warning. My sister gave me shit the first time I wore my new ear defenders to the grocery store. Dad did nothing but demand and demand from me when I had nothing. I ruined a dinner that I didn’t know how to cook and went hungry but made him eat leftover ham from Christmas.

January 2020, the COVID shit started on the news.

March 2020, I went to the grocery store with mom and shelves were empty like a nuclear war was coming. I was terrified that I would catch COVID and kill my parents by passing it to them. Church closed. Stores opened for senior hours at butthole o’clock in the morning. Weekend routines were destroyed. Choir practices stopped. More routine disruptions.

August 2020, I started having anniversary distress related to what happened to mom the year before.

Then dad fell and broke his hip. I still clear as day see him in his blue shirt, sitting on the stair chair, being pulled backwards out the front door by paramedics with the ambulance lights flashing red and blue under the midnight sky and white street light.

Late September, as I’m struggling a bit with the anniversary of what happened to mom, worrying about dad getting COVID and beginning to relax because “dad is going to be away till he can walk again...” there comes that phone call from shithole New Orange Hills saying they’re sending him home and we find out they lied to us about every promise they made.

October 2020, dad was brought home and now he’s laying in an electric bed in the family room where mom can hear him if he needs her.

Writing that down has me realizing I’ve been experiencing almost continuous upheavals to my routines. Routines give me a sense of safety, and every time things settle something else throws it all to shit again.

So either I have ptsd or I’m possibly developing it, and I’m scared because this seems so ridiculous compared to the reasons other people get it.

Time travel and Louie, oh boy.

This episode begins on a dark and stormy night, or, to put it more specifically...

Roxanne Featherly: Here in Duckberg, life is like a hurricane?

Ha, I get it. Honestly, considering this episode is about an actual hurricane, it be a crime not to reference that. Anyway, the episode begins with the McDuck Manor preparing for the worst El Pato storm in history. Dewey and Webby are preparing the emergency food supply...

...which consists of a Chili Cheese Dog bar. Mrs. Beakley does not approve, and tells Dewey that his mother would certainly not approve of this diet that would only lead to scurvy.

Much to her chagrin, here's Della chomping on a chili cheese dog, telling Mrs. Beakley to just enjoy this "hooray-cane party". This sets up, yes, another Della-related subplot that was hinted at in "Nothing Can Stop Della Duck!". This is the third one in the span of four episodes, they are really getting out all these Della plots when they can.

This particular subplot is about Della's role as a positive role model for mothers everywhere, a role that Mrs. Beakley will have several opportunities to question in this episode. To Della, she should just let the kids be kids, she should not sweat the small stuff, and other things that Mrs. Beakley suspects she only read off of bumper stickers.

She's only been on this Earth as a mother of three for about the time between this episode and the aforementioned “Nothing Can Stop Della Duck!”, but Della knows everything will be fine.

As for one of the other kids, Huey picked this time, out of all the times he could have possibly picked, to brag about his comprehensive caveduck report that he will eventually submit to the Junior Woodchucks. He could possibly be included in the new edition of the Junior Woodchuck guidebook!

Dewey: My brother's going to be a professional nerd!

Yup, that's basically what he is. Huey could ask the Woodchuck's scoutmaster about it, but Launchpad is too busy boarding the windows in the a way anyone would expect. Scrooge, none too happy with all the broken windows, decides to tell him to check on what Louie is doing. Of course, that green guy is looking rather suspicious, but that seems to be the norm for him. As he walks in the kids' room, he notices some flashing lights right behind the Dewey Dew-Night backdrop, and he notices something amazing.

He finds out that Louie has his own tub! Incredible! They do a few jokes with this, including one where he gets out his rubber ducky, leading Louie to tell him that the Time Tub cannot be used as an actual tub. Launchpad seems a bit too eager to use it as one; maybe I shouldn't think about this too much.

This turns out this is yet another subsidiary of Louie Inc: Time Treasures. So yeah, continuation of one of the plot threads from "The Outlaw Scrooge McDuck!", and a slightly better continuation of a previous episode than the last time. So how does Time Treasures work?

First, he goes back in time with the Time Tub that he definitely didn't steal from Gyro Gearloose, teleporting right where a lost treasure was. Second, he takes it. Third, profit. Hey, if it was never found, it's not stolen! Don't even think about the logistics with this. How would Louie know where all the treasures are if they weren't found by anyone? The episode is not really harmed by this, because it's not like Louie is supposed to be using good logic in this new Louie Inc. strategy, anyway.

As Louie and his new accomplice, er, helper teleport back, this caveman goes up to gawk at these weird people in their half-open rock. He ends up getting teleported, too.

Meanwhile, Dewey sees something outside, and the kids go out and investigate. To the sheer horror of Mrs. Beakley, Della doesn't seem to care that her children and another child has gone out when a dangerous storm is imminent. Even more horrifying...

Dewey: Hey, look, a dead guy!

Oh, classic Dewey.

The dead guy turns out to be the caveduck. Webby and Dewey come up with the idea that he must have been frozen in an iceberg. Webby is still on her steak of wrong assumptions, except for that popcorn one from the previous one. Granted, there was absolutely no way she would know about Louie's shenanigans other than schenanigans being his thing.

Mrs. Beakley does bring up that this caveduck is going to mess up all of time, citing the Butterfly effect. How would she know this caveman was time-displaced at this point? Eventually, she does say there is a "S.H.U.S.H. chrono-protocol" about this, but it seems early for her to suspect this. I also know this is just a setup for a joke where Della is disgusted over Mrs. Beakley suggesting violence to a butterfly, but still.

The kids decide to eventually name him after the one word he can say and rhyme with: Bubba. I'm going to be 100% honest: I don't remember this character's appearances in the original 1987 cartoon. From what I have heard, he wasn't very well liked. If it means anything, I didn't mind this character at all in this episode, so congratulations?

The most he really does is let the sins of the modern world corrupt him, as he will eventually start eating chili dogs and wearing backwards baseball caps! This comes much to the disgust of Huey, who wants to just study the caveduck as he was back in his day. That's basically the whole plot with Bubba, really.

Going back to the other plot, Launchpad is helping Louie with a treasure chest that they have "found", and even he is questioning whether or not this is ethical. Louie shoves him off, saying that it's not stealing if it's from pirates, and there's no way this Louie Inc. subsidiary can have any real side-effects. He also silently hopes there's no way anything can be worse, and he also silently hopes that a bunch of pirates do not get zapped into the Manor.

Suddenly, pirates get zapped into the Manor. Womp womp. Louie admits that that might be one side effect.

After the commercial break, we get a news report, showing that this El Pato storm has combined with a time vortex, turning it into the titular Timephoon.

Roxanne Featherly: The Timephoon has unsurprisingly localized itself above McDuck Manor.

Okay, I love how Roxanne says "unsurprisingly" here. Of course it has to be something involving Scrooge. Everything seems to be to the point where even the people in the universe know this.

Roxanne cuts to the meteorologist who is on the scene, who happens to be Benjamin Franklin. Unfortunately, his reporting on the chronologically confused cyclone is interrupted by his fear of the strange box that is pointing at him. Outside of this scene, we don't get to see what the Timephoon's effects are outside of the McDuck Manor. I get that they probably wanted to save a Duckberg-scaled for the Moonvasion, but it does take a little weight off of the issue of this plot. This is especially egregious considering what will come of this.

Scrooge has one particular idea on what caused this: Launchpad and one of the kids, most likely Louie, used the Time Tub, and the caveduck went with them by accident! But that's just preposterous, because it could be anything according to Louie! He even decides to erase it with his jacket to remove any suspicion that this could be correct.

Della: Louie's right!

Della just agrees with Louie, because she has to trust her kids and she can't just give up her "unwilling to punish her kids" character. Scrooge eventually theorizes that every change in the time stream is causing the storm to get worse, as if the small problem are adding up to one large one. Sort of a Butterfly effect minus the butterfly analogy that grossed Della out. He suggests getting Gyro to help, but Louie says the storm is just too terrible for them to go out and talk to him.

Good news for them, Gyro shows up in the same way the pirates do. The bad news for pretty much everyone is that someone took the Time Tub and has destroyed time and space!

His story begins with him just minding his own business, not cloning an army of himself just as much as Louie says he's not doing anything wrong, when he notices his Time Tub was stolen. The after-blast from the Time Tub got him just as much as it got the caveduck from before, and he went all through time to see what happened.

Louie finally gets a clue, and decides the best course of action is to bring it all back.

Also, Bubba is continuing to enjoy the modern joys of life, while Huey gets angry over all of these chronological inaccuracies. Dewey decides to convince him by saying that maybe his research was wrong. We get the closest DuckTales 2017 will get to a face fault with Huey here; still on-model, but something is still not right with him.

Throughout the episode, more and more people from the past show up to cause trouble, like ninjas that Mrs. Beakley has to deal with. Eventually, a triceratops zaps into the present, giving the caveduck. Eventually, he just does a complete 180 from being accurate to his own research, and says this is awesome. Yeah, that's the B plot. I guess the chaos just got to him.

The chaos just gets worse and worse, as Mrs. Beakley gets zapped into the past, complete with Mrs. Beakley showing up on that painting that first shown Della's existence. More and more, and Louie, who is already trying to fix what he has done, is trying to put everything back together.

It doesn't really take a time scientist to figure out that Louie will eventually fix this all on his own, though it is a situation he ends up being forced into. I was almost expecting him to go into the time tub, go back to when he had this idea, and smack him upside the head, but that's not what he does. That ending would be a little cliched, and it would have been a cop-out.

Instead, Louie decides to aim the shower head at the various time-displaced people, including Bubba and Tootsie, shoots a ray that sends them back into time, and hopes that this will make everything okay. Again, don't think of the logistics with this.

Somehow, this makes the Timephoon just spit out everyone back into the present. Dressed as they are, they came all the way over time, and one of them is going to get the grounding of his life for messing with the timestream! Here's a hint: it's the one that isn't even in a costume.

Della finally decides to put her foot down, and ends up being the only person in the room that doesn't want to instantly forgive Louie for what he did. Della doesn't play by the ordinary cartoon rules, and neither does this cartoon since this grounding may actually last more than a silly ending.

Della: You took off in that contraption, without thinking about the consequences or the people you would hurt!

Louie: (loses any pretense of being apologetic for his actions, rolls his eyes) I wonder where I got that from.

With all the hurt that the Della plot has caused, nobody in-universe has ever really called out Della for getting on the Spear of Selene in the first place until this scene. It seems like everyone here has their own reaction to this, but they can all agree that this is not the time for this. Huh, time.

Oh, and as for Huey's caveduck research, it got rejected because it wasn't realistic.

I found it okay for the most part. Some parts were actually really good, too! I debated on whether to give this the same rating as "Happy Birthday, Doofus Drake!", and the ending alone is what puts this episode over the edge of that scale for me.

I’m also gonna be adding a few other things to these Flash Reviews and also review the movies I’ve seen during the month, just cause I rly like having opinions lol.  So without further ado, here are the anime, shows, and movies that I saw this February and January!

Castlevania

Not technically an anime in anything other than style, Castlevania is the animated adaptation of the third Castlevania game, following the adventures of Trevor Belmont, the last of his vampire hunting legacy, Sypha, a nomadic magician, and Alucard Tepes, the son of Dracula and his human wife who was killed by the church, and their struggles to take down Dracula before he wipes out all of humanity.

I don’t know much about Castlevania the games, as they really aren’t my genre, but this adaptation was incredible!!  Proof that video game adaptations can and should strive for greater heights!  The dialogue was funny and witty, the characters were interesting and even the villains were endearing, and there was this incredibly crafted atmosphere of both sadness and hope.  Not to mention, the animation was top notch.  Plus, I have to give it credit for finally letting characters say “fuck” realistically.

overall: 9/10

Futari wa Pretty Cure

The very first, original start of the popular magical girl franchise, Pretty Cure chronicles the tale of Nagisa and Honoka, two very different girls who are brought together when they are chosen to become Pretty Cure, the legendary warriors who will defend light from the darkness!  Together with their mascot friends Mepple and Mipple, and juggling their real lives along with their supernatural battles, Cure Black and Cure White will do whatever it takes to protect the world from evil!

I’ve intended to watch Pretty Cure for literally years now, and no one could agree with where I should start, so I decided to just do what I usually do and watch from the beginning.  I’ve only seen the first season of Pretty Cure and not the Max Heart sequel yet.  Overall, it was about what I expected!  I’m a bit of a sucker for the traditional 2000s magical girl genre, with its repetitive formulas, catchphrases, poses, and the usual five episode plots that every single one of them has.  The designs were super cute and I love how Black and White look so distinct and yet are still clearly a team.  Pollun especially is super adorable!!

Definitely I can see why Pretty Cure became such of a behemoth in the magical girl genre today; it has staying power.  This season was definitely full of a lot of generic magical girl filler, and I will be honest that I started to lose steam for it towards the end, plus the villains were not at all endearing or interesting (like, Poisonny and Regine are both very pretty, and Kiriya was okay, but other than that, no one stands out), but it was still a great and adorable experience that I’m glad I experienced.  I’m not sure when I’ll get to the next series, but I’m sure it won’t be long!

Incredibles 2

I took my sweet time going to see this sequel, but here we are.  In the anticipated sequel to the original Incredibles, the family faces new challenges as Elastigirl is scouted by a CEO to help make superheroes legal again, while Mr. Incredible has to learn the challenges of taking care of the family by himself.

 I guess overall it was a good movie and well made for its intended audience.  The animation was pretty good and I usually like their cartoony anatomy designs which are more concerned with a comic-book-esque aesthetic rather than proper anatomy and perfect realism.  Definitely the quality has soared since the first Incredibles.  For me personally though...as much as it was entertaining, in hindsight I don’t think it was really made for me.  There were a lot of plot threads that didn’t seem to get resolved or even addressed.  Bob never fully confronts his jealousy for Helen’s new job, and is never quite confronted about the fact that he hid Jack Jack’s powers from Helen either.  The new superheroes were...honestly not my favorite designs in the world outside of Void, and I felt like their only purpose was to become fight fodder for the final battle, which could have been done with almost any other means.  For as long as the movie was, it felt like a lot of the threads were simply not deeply solved, and only shallowly addressed.  As this is a movie for kids, though, I can look past that; this wasn’t the story for a hugely deep look at things.  It did affect my personal enjoyment, though, but it was still a greatly fun movie to watch.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly

Finally coming for the canon after a couple of decades, DBS Broly brings the legendary super Saiyan Broly into the main cast.  When the young Broly is sent away from Planet Vegeta for being too overwhelmingly powerful, he and his father are stranded on a barren planet for forty years, until they are found by some of Frieza’s soldiers and brought into the Frieza Force.  Frieza immediately pits the super powerful Broly up against our heroes Goku and Vegeta, who must pull out every trick in the book in order to stop him from destroying the planet in his growing rage.

I never ever thought I would say this about anything relating to Broly, but GODDAMN that might have been the best Dragon Ball media in years.  Let’s get this part straight: I’ve disliked Broly since he first appeared in the DB movies.  He was boring, had a ridiculous backstory, and was just there to be a Gary Stu to really push Goku and Vegeta to their limits.  But this movie??? This movie singlehandedly shot Broly to my top ten characters in Dragon Ball.  He is endearing, gentle, a recovering abuse victim with a rage he cannot control, and his strength is more dangerous to himself than to those around him.  In TFS’ review of the movie, they made a great point: the real stakes of his movie aren’t whether Broly is going to destroy the planet; they’re whether Broly himself is going to be okay.  I’m focusing a lot on Broly, but Goku and Vegeta are in top form in his movie as well.  It’s great getting to see Vegeta have a massive fight where he isn’t immediately jobbed for Goku’s sake, and Goku himself is at the top of his game as the fun-loving, battle-crazed but still sympathetic hero that he should always be written as.  Not to mention our new additions to the main cast in Cheelai and Lemo, two of Frieza’s soldiers who found and ended up befriending Broly, who are equally endearing and fun especially in their dynamics with Broly himself.  

All in all, this was a fucking excellent movie, and the first DB media that I can imagine wanting to rewatch!

Fireworks

When Nazuna is about to move away, she asks Norimichi to come with her to the fireworks, though she plans instead to run away.  When this doesn’t work according to plan, Norimichi finds that a strangle marble belonging to Nazuna has the power to turn back the clock, giving them a second chance to be together.  However, with each reset, they move further and further away from reality -- can they return to a world where they’re able to spend at least one day with each other?

This is pretty much, in a nutshell, everything I love about anime movies.  It’s beautiful, fluid, full of amazing music, and the emotions hit so close to home.  While the story itself doesn’t explain much, it really doesn’t have to -- the surrealism of the surrounding world sells it more than any exposition would, proving you don’t need to slow down your story to explain something as long as you can make people feel something for it.  Despite having so little to know about both Norimichi and Nazuna, I was still more than sold by their romance. And once again, the surrealism of the animation and the story are something that only anime can pull off.  You just can’t do stories like this live action.

The only thing that really dragged this story down were some of the CGI bits, which I found unnecessary and weird against the otherwise gorgeous backgrounds, but I guess this is where animation is going lately so I might have to get used to it.

481-482: “Ace Rescued! Whitebeard's Final Order!” and “The Power That Can Burn Even Fire! Akainu's Ruthless Pursuit”

Ace, I know why you did it but I am sad.

For you, for Luffy, for Whitebeard and everyone who risked their lives to save you. Your pride and loyalty - two of your biggest strengths - were used against you by a slick, clever liar who knew exactly how to take advantage. That is exactly how you got into this situation. Your pride forced you to chase Blackbeard. Now it forced you to square up to Akainu who has a more powerful version of your fruit.

I don’t think Ace is dead (because he’s a logia fruit user and a fist through the chest is a big deal but nothing insurmountable). I won’t believe it, anyway, until I see a body and that vivre card is cinders and ashes.

And Whitebeard, ugh. Oda shows no mercy when he wants to elicit emotion, does he? Goes straight for the jugular. ;_;

Ace and Luffy

It started so well. The morale boost when Ace, Luffy and Mr 3 appeared and the cheers that went up made me grin. (I may also have clapped but I don’t want to admit it.)

It was great seeing them fight seriously together for the first time. Ace’s fruit powers really are awesome, in the old sense of the word, and flashy too. Buggy would love them (remember when they partied together on Buggy’s ship? Ah... memories). I still think Ace’s Firefly has a grace and beauty about it you won’t expect from a rugged, piratical user. Maybe it reflects his inner personality. Ace is a good guy. Even though Luffy has Gear 3rd now, I still think 2nd is the most effective move-set. It gives him speed and power.

What I liked best about this scene was Ace’s happiness and pride at discovering how far Luffy had come. Unlike other shounen characters (like, say, Bakugou from BnHA,  Sasuke from Naruto, or Vegeta from DB) being saved is not a stain on his pride. He was happy Luffy rescued him and commended him on how strong he had become. "Never thought I'd be saved by you one day. Thanks, Luffy. You got stronger!" He gives his little brother the credit for his hard word and bloody-minded determination.

Likewise, Luffy also gives credit where it’s due. He laughed and said, "Whitebeard and the others helped me do it." He recognised the sacrifices everyone made to help him achieve his goal. Hopefully, he’ll be able to pay them back one day. I’m sure he will. :)

There was still brotherly banter, though. Old habits die hard. “I’ll become stronger than you, one day!” Ace did not ridicule Luffy or say, “Yeah, sure. Doubt it but good luck.” When Aokiji jumped in, he knew Luffy wasn’t ready to face him yet but was tactful about Luffy’s pride. “Then let me protect you for now.”

For now. Does Ace acknowledge that one day Luffy might make good on that promise?

Whatever the case, Ace’s clash with Aokiji was great to watch. Was it the prime example of a bad match up (Ace’s fire melted Aokiji’s ice) or is Ace on Aokiji’s level, generally? I cannot decide. Kizaru didn’t step up, so I can’t say either way if he would be a bad match up for Ace. Akainu, who eventually did, was like, “NOPE. AN ESCAPE? NOT HAPPENING. STEP ASIDE, SOLDIERS.”

Then Squard turned up, powering the Moby Dick v.2 across the ice like a tank, ready to use it as a bomb that would blow up himself, his crew and Marineford, so the others could take Ace and go. His crew sure are loyal, willing to die for his mistake. Not sure I agree with that, but hell, it’s their choice.

Whitebeard didn’t agree with it, either, and stopped the ship with one hand (awesome).

Whitebeard

Ugh, Whitebeard. You keep dragging everyone’s heart through the wringer. I am now convinced you have a second fruit power that involves tugging on heart strings. Even while dying (and I am now reconvinced he will sacrifice himself to help Luffy and Ace escape) he still looks out for his sons. Oda must like him because he gives him such powerful, meaningful lines.

"Can't you understand how ungrateful it is for a child to die before his parent, Squard? That little stab wound didn't affect my lifespan. Now, listen all you Whitebeard pirates. I'm gonna give you an order for the last time! You and I will part ways here. Everyone, survive and get to the New World at any cost! I am a remnant from the old times. There is no ship that can bear me into the New Era. Don’t look back. Because the era is changing.”

This got me for a couple of reasons. If you’ve ever talked to old people (like family or friends you get on with), sometimes they begin to say stuff like that near the end of their lives. You don’t want them to say it because it’s acknowledging something you don’t want to happen but you know it will, anyway. And also the notion of obsolescence. I hate it when older people think of themselves as obsolete, as no longer worth anything as the world changes about them. No. You can learn new things. You are worth something. Even if you can’t get out of the house anymore, you can learn to work a tablet and brighten up someone’s life by joining an online community. Like Whitebeard says, you don’t have to be related to be family.

Sorry for the tangent, but that just gets to me.

On a happier note, Oda let us see a young Whitebeard before he was Whitebeard. His design looks familiar. Like he wouldn’t be out of place in an 80s hair metal band.

Don’t Look Back

The rest, with difficulty, obeyed Whitebeard’s orders and began the evacuation.

Ace, however, with his big heart and undying loyalty, just stood there. Luffy tried to tell him, “The old man has made up his mind!” but Ace said, “I know. And it won’t be in vain!” I really hope not.

Then Ace ran to Whitebeard and bowed before him, head touching the floor, to show how grateful he was for everything Whitebeard had given him: family, freedom, and, in the words of Dr Hiluluk, a wonderful life.

“We don’t need words now,” Whitebeard said (and at that point someone was cutting onions, I swear). “But just tell me one thing... are you happy to have me as your father?”

“Of course I am!” Ace shouted.

I still don’t know whether Whitebeard was laughing or crying at Ace’s answer, but I don’t need to know. For better or worse, they are father and son. Ace turned and ran with Luffy, protected by Jimbei who correctly interpreted Whitebeard’s order as: he wants as many survivors as possible. Let’s gtfo out of here now.

Sengoku seems to think Whitebeard intends to do what Squard threatened. To sink Marineford into the sea, sacrificing himself in the process. Garp seems to think along the same lines, but also noticing that Whitebeard wants to change the Era, believing that, yes, it is the right time. I love how Whitebeard is so strong that he dictates when the Era changes.

I suppose he’s leaving it up to the rest to shape the New Era.

BUT AKAINU...

If I thought Kizaru was an accomplished shit-talker, Akainu takes it to the next level. At first, I thought the guy was a just a raging meat-head. Could not have been more wrong. This guy is a Class A Manipulator. He knows just what to say to get under someone’s skin, then take advantage. He did it with Squard and that’s why I’m sad that Ace fell for his lies. But again, I know why Ace did it. Because he has a big heart and is loyal to a fault.

“As soon as you rescue Fire Fist Ace, you cut and run. The Whitebeard pirates must be cowards. Whitebeard is just a loser from the old times. Gol D. Roger conquered the world and ushered in a new Era by sacrificing himself (exactly like WB, now I think of it). But Roger was true to his name as the Pirate King. What has Whitebeard done? He was satisfied by being a big fish in a little, family barrel. Some fools say his name is keeping peace on various islands (uh oh, I smell trouble future). But if you ask me, he’s keeping lightweights in fear of him. Even after Roger’s death, he could never become the Pirate King. He’s a poor man, when you think of it: roamed the sea with his fake family, couldn’t become king, gained nothing and was stabbed by a fool who fell for my line. I don’t care if the others get away, as long as I get you two. So I’ll kill him [Luffy] and make you watch!”

Ace, you shouldn’t have looked back. Whitebeard told you. It’s like that tale of Orpheus and Eurydice: you look back and... doom. You looked back, took the bait and now a guy with a stronger devil fruit has punched you through the chest and your little brother is in danger.

I’m loving the twists and turns but this something else... ;_;

Every single time I see this attack, the 80s-tastic song gets stuck in my head and I will now forever associate it with Ace.

Have you ever wondered how good your hearing is? The Hearing: Frequency and Volume Gizmo™ allows you to test how well you hear tones at different frequencies. The frequency of a sound wave is measured in hertz (Hz), where 1 Hz is equal to one wave passing each second. Frequency is related to the pitch of a sound, or whether it sounds high (like a whistle) or low (like a tuba).

Before you begin, be sure you are in a very quiet setting. Headphones are recommended for

this Gizmo. Set the System volume to 1 and click the test button( ). Adjust the System volume and your computer so that you hear a moderately loud tone when you click test.

This one is library dependent. Most languages don't have something like linq. A lot of the DSLs that map SQL queries to your favourite language are at times not very performant as well. Many times, you end up using plain SQL or whatever NOSQL depending on how good the library is.

Also library dependent unless you want to get into low level sockets which most people don't even remotely understand. On top of this, depending on what framework you're using (because no one makes a server from scratch nowadays when there are entire organizations dedicated to developing a framework) the library is different.

Tic-tac-toe/battleship

I work in software and I can imagine how i'd implement this, but I've never done it. Seriously have never found a reason to ever do this. This is some intro to cs shit. That's like asking "How to implement quicksort in X lang". Most of the time wont need it.

Graphics

I never work with graphics. I don't know jack shit about graphics. I'm a server side developer/security analyst and I don't need to know this shit. I'd hardly make this a must.

IMO, the entire problem with this thread and responses is you only need to memorize specifics once you work in something very often. I can sniff a network with scapy without looking at any references but if you ask me how to do this in C I have no idea, but give me a few hrs I could get it to work.

What people need to understand is that knowledge of concepts matter more than individual implementation. If you understand concepts from the ground up, you can work with any implementation.

Simple Types. If you can't deal with words (Strings), numbers (integers, doubles, floats etc) and binary options (booleans), you cant really do anything useful for non technical humans to understand

Type Manipulation. if you cant convert 11 (as a string) into 11 (as an integer) then you cannot do a calculation with written numbers. If you don't know how

Logical loops and conditions. (e.g If, Else If, For Each, While, Switch Case etc. ) if you cant do this you cannot program anything useful... and for gods sake don't create a potentially infinite loop in your program.

I/O or Read/Write. if you cant take inputs from somewhere and provide an output, what's the point?!

Functions/methods and overloads. Learn how to create them and reuse them as often as you can whenever a similar problem presents itself.

Error handling AND LOGGING. no function should be without a try catch [turns out this is fairly specific to my specific application specifications]. use what you learned doing I/O and output the errors to a log file so you can see where things are going wrong, even if they don't cause unexpected behaviour.

Section 2. Necessary basics: these might require a little more thought in terms of how you optimise certain things, but definitely not challenging on a day to day basis.

Complex Types. Lists, collections, multidimensional arrays. all very useful when dealing with lots of data

Interfacing: how to create reusable interfaces to be used throughout your application

Classes and inheritance and class structure: This will form the basic structure of all your programs

I/O 2 Database transactions. so how to query SQL to get your data, and how to update tables with the results.

Section 3. stuff you should know but might want to look up occasionally

learn a structural framework (MVVM, MVC)

Front end (Xaml if you're doing WPF, HTML/CSS + a bit of JS for web)

Section 4 Everything Else:

Google.... no i'm serious, google has the answer to every question you could possibly want to ask about programming. so unless you are doing something groundbreaking and new, google will likely have your answer. so long as you have a solid grasp of everything i put above you should be able to integrate any solution provided on the web into your own code. but it's up to you to make it as efficient as possible...
