Here’s A Feelgood List Of Indie Fashion Brands To Support
It's a scary and confusing time for everyone right now but for small business owners, the coronavirus outbreak signals an uncertain future. With ever-changing government protection, plus the shift in shopping habits now we're all on lockdown, small labels are working out the best way to future-proof their livelihoods. While many are talking of shopping local when it comes to essentials like food and toiletries, we mustn't overlook the fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands which are also trying to survive this uncertain period. Happily, small fashion brands tend to have more transparent production lines, more ethical manufacturing processes and are more responsible when it comes to sustainable and environmentally friendly fabrics, so you can continue to support them guilt-free. While we're well aware that it's not possible for everyone to be able to shop these brands – COVID-19 or not, it's no secret that the more ethical the brand, the higher the price thanks to more honest overheads – if you can, it's nice to be able to put your money into small brands during this period. From House of Sunny to HADES, here are the small fashion labels we're championing now and always.
Birdsong
Our favourite activist fashion collective, Birdsong truly talks the talk and walks the walk. Joining forces with women – from printmakers to seamstresses – who face barriers to employment, the brand pays them the London living wage to create joyful contemporary pieces that put the feelgood back into fashion. In order to protect their makers, Birdsong has halted production during the COVID-19 crisis, but you can still support them and their creatives by placing orders. Birdsong In Bloom Organic Cotton T-Shirt, $, available at Birdsong
HADES
HADES, founded back in 2015, has garnered a cult following thanks to its ultra cool knitwear offering. Any music and fashion fan worth their salt will have lusted after the brand's band collections, which celebrate the likes of X-Ray Spex, Patti Smith and Joy Division, while the more recent cardigan drop, featuring Greek mythology and fruit salad buttons, is top of our cosy wish list. Handcrafted in Hawick, Scotland and made from 100% lambswool, the brand has introduced a pre-order system, reducing overall waste. Hades Alphabet E Knit, $, available at Hades
SĂ©zane
When Morgane SĂ©zalory launched Parisian label SĂ©zane back in 2013, she envisioned a new kind of brand: one without a physical retail space, trading solely online. The French-girl-cool offering, which used to be a platform for Morgane to sell her vintage collection but now sells vintage-inspired contemporary designs, works on a lean production model. This means small quantities of high quality pieces (think '70s jumpsuits and suede handbags), reducing waste and carefully considered pricing. SĂ©zane Manhattan Jumpsuit, $, available at SĂ©zane
arkitaip
Mother and daughter duo Michi and Lea Weiser founded arkitaip in 2018 with the aim of producing sustainably made, high quality wardrobe essentials that can be passed down. Everything is made from linen, one of the most durable and eco-friendly fabrics, or crochet, handcrafted by Michi, while the label focuses on an ethical supply chain. A love letter to artisanal craftsmanship, the brand's pastel-hued jumpsuits, blouses and dresses make up the ultimate guilt-free summer wardrobe. Arkitaip The Gretl Linen Jumpsuit in Candy, $, available at Arkitaip
Missoma
Marisa Hordern, mother Michele and sister Sophie are the trio behind jewellery brand Missoma. The super layerable pieces – think stacking rings and multisize chains – have been worn by the likes of Gigi Hadid and Margot Robbie. The brand is gifting 100 gold necklaces to NHS staff members (selected randomly and chosen from those tagged in the comments on their Instagram post) as a small token of gratitude for their work during the COVID-19 crisis. Missoma Gold Mini Helical Hoops, $, available at Missoma
ASCENO
Founded in 2014 by Lauren Leask and Poppy Sexton-Wainwright, ASCENO makes easy-breezy resort and ready-to-wear pieces, but the brand began with luxury silk pyjamas that could be worn together or as separates (think shirts with jeans for the office or trousers with a tee for hosting dinner). Small production runs and 100% natural fibres are the name of the game, and even more sustainable fabrics – like bamboo silk – are due in the upcoming collections. Asceno Venice Pale Blush Silk Pyjama Shorts, $, available at Asceno
Damson Madder
New kid on the block Damson Madder says you shouldn't have to choose between your wardrobe and protecting the environment. Putting sustainability front and centre, it produces pieces in 100% recycled polyester and organic cotton. Its dyeing process employs natural colouring like olive leaf and clay, and uses 35-50% less water than conventional systems. Pieces come up large, so the already-inclusive XS-XL prairie dresses, gingham blouses and tie-dye tees are even better. Damson Madder Ghost Check Puff Sleeve Mini Dress, $, available at Damson Madder
Three Graces London
Three Graces London, founded in 2015 by Catherine Johnson, uses natural fibres only – from pure cotton to sand-washed silk and natural linen – and its pieces are handcrafted in artisan mills across Europe. Made up of sundresses with square necklines and bohemian blouses with blouson sleeves, the brand screams sun-soaked summer holidays. Until 8th April, the brand is donating 100% of net sales to homelessness charity Crisis, to support their efforts to protect the homeless during the COVID-19 outbreak. Three Graces London Tomasina Dress In Navy Gingham, $, available at Three Graces London
Live The Process
The cool girl's choice of workout gear, you'll have spotted all-American brand Live The Process on your favourite instructor's IG. The high-tech pieces combine strength, breathability, heat reduction, moisture wicking and wind-repellent fabrications, without compromising on dreamy design. From knitted all-in-ones to Supplex sports shorts, the beauty lies in the ability to wear the collections both in and out of the ClassPass studio. Live The Process Zen Stretch-Supplex Sports Bra, $, available at Net-A-Porter
Girl With Pearls
With barrettes that look like Midget Gems and bracelets reminiscent of the ones you swapped with pals in primary school, Girl With Pearls is the brainchild of Nini Bukulova. Founded just over a year ago in south Germany, all pieces are handmade by Nini with love. Using glass charms, pearls and plastic beads, she's inspired by old Hollywood film stars and nature, the result being the sweetest accessories around. Girl With Pearls Amélie Barrette, $, available at Girl With Pearls
House of Sunny
Cult London label House of Sunny – founded in 2011 by Sunny Williams – just goes from strength to strength, producing small-batch collections twice a year, allowing time to research the most sustainable manufacturing processes and fabrics. The brand doesn't use fur, leather, skins or silk, and uses leftover materials to create accessories for each collection. Every piece, from sunset motif cropped cardis to sellout Penny Lane faux-fur coats, is produced in-house in east London. House Of Sunny Day Tripper Cardi, $, available at House of Sunny
blĂłma
Handmade in Manchester, blóma is a small accessories brand which has garnered a cult following on Instagram and Depop. Founder Georgia is committed to sourcing the most sustainable materials possible – vintage, secondhand and dead stock beads – to breathe new life into old jewellery. With Alice bands, beaded hair slides and bejewelled flower motif earrings, everything on site is a collectable. blóma Dorothy Headband In Emerald, $, available at blóma
Dora Larsen
Family-run lingerie brand Dora Larsen shook up the underwear industry when it launched in 2016. The luxurious colour combinations (think lilac and mint, saffron and cappuccino) draw customers in but the comfort and wearability keep them loyal. The label has reduced its carbon footprint by using fabrics and trims bought where they are manufactured, which are also made without environmentally damaging chemicals and packaged in 100% recycled materials. Dora Larsen Ottalie Soft Bra, $, available at Dora Larsen
Astrid & Miyu
Worn by the likes of Georgia May Jagger, Pippa Middleton and Maya Stepper, London-based jewellery brand Astrid & Miyu creates dainty pieces, from huggie hoops to stackable rings, in gold-plated brass and sterling silver. The brand recently opened a tattoo studio, offering teensy symbols reflecting their charm collection, too. Astrid & Miyu Mystic Star Ear Cuff in Gold, $, available at Astrid & Miyu
Les Girls Les Boys
Serena Rees, the woman behind luxury lingerie label Agent Provocateur, launched Les Girls Les Boys back in 2017 as a more relaxed and genderless offering. Think sleepwear combined with streetwear, with pieces like cotton boxer shorts and relaxed slogan tees. Les Boys Les Girls looks just as good in bed and at the bar. Les Girls Les Boys Cotton Shorts Impatient Pink, $, available at Les Girls Les Boys

Show off your favorite striped cardigan by letting the collar and bottom poke out of a cropped shearling bomber. Faux leather pants, coordinating kicks and cool statement shades are the only way to finish off the look.
Image: Imaxtree
Take that textured chunky sweater and tuck it into a pair of trousers in a similar shade. Add in a stark puffer, a leopard bucket hat, layered chain-link necklaces and sky blue boots for a hyper-coordinated winter look.
Image: Imaxtree
Tuck a hefty charcoal gray button-down into slate gray trousers. Pile on a trench under a leather cropped puffer to keep the insulation going.
Image: Imaxtree
Suit up in a gray blazer, matching trousers and a neutral blouse. Up the ante with a yellow belt with oversized buckle and a statement sweater coat.
Image: Imaxtree
Style an animal print button-down with classic corduroys. Top off your look with a white beanie and a two-tone faux fur coat. Khaki kicks balance out the outfit.
Image: Imaxtree
For a fresh spin on monochromatic dressing, combine a plaid jumpsuit with a similarly-hued tee and a complementary long puffer. Break up the color story with white booties.
Image: Imaxtree
Slip on your go-to plaid dress over a black turtleneck, then place a red puffer on top. Keep your coat open, but secure it in place with a crossbody bag boasting a chain-link strap. Slouchy black boots round out the look nicely.
Image: Imaxtree
Don’t underestimate the power of a good pair of overalls this time of year. Place a striped sweater underneath and layer a faux fur coat on top. Chunky black sneakers punctuate the chill look.
Image: Imaxtree
A striped mock-neck top is a winter staple, but gets new life when teamed with a bright checked coat layered over zip-up denim. Roll your cuffs to flaunt your socks and pumps combo, then top off the look with complementary shades and a leather beret.
Image: Imaxtree
Stick with black and white for a cozy (and coordinated) look. Combine a black turtleneck with white cropped pants, textured black boots and a two-tone shearling coat. Bonus points for carrying a fringed mini bag.
Image: Imaxtree
Who says black and brown don’t go together? Wear a dark brown teddy coat over a black turtleneck and cropped pants. Wrap things up with thick black tights and white studded boots.
Image: Imaxtree
Opt for a denim pantsuit, then layer a white turtleneck underneath. A creamy coat, white boots and a structured brown bag show you mean business.
Image: Imaxtree
A pastel striped hoodie will brighten even the dreariest winter day. Throw in a candy-colored striped skirt, a white turtleneck, white tights and Converse and you have a colorful cold-weather look.
Image: Imaxtree
This is how fashion girls do Valentine’s Day. Break out your red turtleneck and pair it with patterned pants in a corresponding color. Stay warm by working in an office-appropriate plaid coat and black boots.
Image: Imaxtree
Make a wrap skirt work in winter by layering it over thigh-high boots. Incorporate a turtleneck under a patterned sweater to round out the look.
Image: Imaxtree
Because you can never be too coordinated, style your chunky red sweater with a crimson moto jacket, a plaid tote with red accents and red-soled kicks. Add in a pair of standard khakis to bring it all together.
Image: Imaxtree
Can’t decide between two statement coats? Wear both. Use a black turtleneck as your base layer, then pile on the outerwear with the warmest one on top. With all that warmth, you can sport a black skirt, tights and boots.
Image: Imaxtree
Show your support for the home team by wearing a basketball jersey over a hoodie and logo-accented leggings. Make it fashion with sparkly over-the-knee boots and a shearling coat.
Image: @oursecondskin
Go ahead and get graphic with a colorful tee and colorblock pants. A shearling-lined denim coat, a novelty bag and black boots give the look even more personality.
Image: Imaxtree
Yes, you can sport silky separates in February. Just wear a heavy shearling coat over them to keep out the chill and cap off the look with white boots.
Image: Imaxtree
Rock a sweater vest as outwear by wearing it over a patterned turtleneck coat. Dark pants tucked into statement boots amp up the ensemble even more.
Image: Imaxtree
An oversized shearling-lined bomber will bottle in the heat so you can sport a thinner wine-colored V-neck sweater underneath. A patterned skirt, black tights and tall brown boots will also keep you toasty.
Image: Imaxtree
Take your tracksuit out for a seasonal spin by placing a long winter coat on top. Striped platform Nikes keep things sporty.
Image: @christinapaik
Flaunt your fave plaid miniskirt no matter the temperature by slipping on black pants underneath. Top things off with a gray sweater under a marled one and round it all out with red-accented black boots.
Image: @blancamiro
Start off with a black turtleneck, then work in a white button-down, an oversized tan blazer and cropped black pants so you can flaunt your white socks and sturdy black platforms. Carry a colorful saddle bag for bonus points.
Image: @maria_bernad
Play with proportions by pairing a baby blue turtleneck with split cuffs with black leggings tucked into white over-the-knee boots.
Image: @louloudesaison
By the end of the month, you may be able to get away with lighter layers. Slip on a warm kimono-style coat over a black shirt with zip-up collar and snakeskin pants. A box bag and suede boots are the perfect finishing touches.
Image: Imaxtree
Punch up a colorblock sweater and faded cropped jeans combo with bright red ribbed tights tucked into white boots.
Image: Imaxtree
