On lukola fandom

Here’s some venting about the lukola fandom, and its ways, and consequences, from an ordinary polin, Bridgerton and Luke fan.

Starting from the way Luke’s loved ones and friends are treated by its adherents. Especially his girlfriend. The hate towards her is visceral. The whole phenomenon of bullying and stalking someone just for existing and posting on their SM account from time to time probably needs to be studied by social studies scholars and parasocial relationship specialists, cause it’s new heights apparently.

So, what if she’s proud of Luke as her boyfriend and wants to show it? What if she wants to mark her territory sometimes, to which she has a right btw? What if she trolls haters and delusional IRL shippers occasionally? Hers is probably the most relatable behavior. I myself, as an introvert millennial who doesn’t run one single SM account and cringe from the exhibitionist nature of current SM posting practices, still recognize that there’s nothing unusual about that kind of posting per se. Why was Luke’s former gf, Jade, allowed to post him all the time (which is totally alright btw), but Antonia hinting at having, say, a dinner with Luke is shady, attention-seeking, desperate, needy and despicable?

It's not that I care particularly about her. In fact, I couldn’t care less if she’s replaced by Luke with some other woman in a couple of months or if she is his future wife and mother to his kids. I still believe, regardless of her status in the relationship, she deserves basic respect and decent treatment as a human being that we know pretty much nothing about. She does not deserve the vilification and demonization that she gets.

Luke too, has a right to privacy and respect for his personal choices that are nobody’s business. He owes no one anything in terms of disclosing his dating life and confirming his relationships. If for someone, Luke bringing the girl to almost all his travels and events with himself, is not a proof or statement in and of itself about her being his girlfriend, then that’s on them. No amount of intentional misreading and skewed takes on photos will trump this simple fact.

Also please don’t bring up virtue signaling and other cancel culture stupidities, such as moral judgements passed on Luke and his close ones for political or other values purportedly held by them, of which we in fact know zilch. It’s clear that this is just another useful tool in a shipping crusade.

Nicola too, deserves, for a change, to have her numerous statements taken seriously. Let alone, privacy. She’s being stalked by her so-called fans to insanity. I am sure she, to put it mildly, is uncomfortable about her “queen” and “goddess” status among the cultists, and being a projection vessel for a myriad of sad women. Cause she knows very well this type of passionate idolatry is an inch away from hate, and the plus sign switches to a minus sign the minute she does something not to their liking, a wrong brand or person supported, or not enough disciplining of Luke is exercised. The most delusional thing about lukolas is them truly believing themselves to be Nic’s or Luke’s fans.

Which brings us to the crux of the matter. That IRL shipping is bad, period. Some lukola bloggers on tumblr, TT and IG half-heartedly try to reign in and admonish the more unhinged segment of the fandom by telling them to behave and not bring their bul..t to the actors' feet. However, this is what the lukola discourse platforms, by simply existing, still do - breed crazy fan behavior. Because the problem lies in the belief system itself. No amount of reservations, house-keeping and discipline by lukola discourse 'leaders' will do away with the tenets and premises of this religion that seep through and twist every discussion and speculation about the figures involved (Luke, Nic, etc). Since every reasoning should work towards a certain end goal, all means and distortions are good to achieve it. Finding faults with Luke's character and behavior and demanding a 'redemption' from him, hating and criticizing Luke's friends and family, attributing motivations to the actors and their loved ones that best suit theories, online stalking etc. A myth about Luke ever publicly stating he was single during promo, a ridiculous myth about Bridgerton cast and showrunners shipping lukola (news flash – nobody in the cast cares about their co-stars’ private lives, stop the kindergarten), or the “papgate” affecting in any way Luke’s job prospects. Myths upon myths that build the house of cards of the lukola dogma. I myself wouldn’t care a damn about this fandom if it really contained itself to its close corners and group chats, however, unsurprisingly, they spill over in a grand fashion and permeate all discourse.

You really believe the innocent delulu fangirling has no by-products? These are the staple manifestations of the lukola and of any IRL shipping fandom, and popular lukola theorists are pretty successful in justifying and reinforcing them. And it should not be surprising that some followers, the most zealous and stupid ones, take it too far and actually harass people and be annoying in SM.

As a Luke and polin fan, I am annoyed by this, but I am 100% sure this sh*t is affecting the actors, and you all can kiss goodbye to the chemistry between Luke and Nic naturally displayed during promo. I am sure polin will not be affected, for L and N are excellent actors and friends, but you all soon will look sadly back to S3 promo tour as magic that will never come back.

Greetings, I'm a fairly new gal to the beetlejuice fandom (I've seen the movie and the cartoon back in the day but I've never engaged in the fandom until the musical came out) And English speaking spaces are.. not exactly new, but still, most views they share don't come naturally to me, or I straight up disagree anyway. So, while I can't fully stomach how agressive you are with your views (I get why you are though, and I think you are admirable for how set in your ideals you are and how they are not your typical cancel culture cultists bullshit) your posts about dark romance and why a lot of afab like them and why mass media hates that afab like them give me some food for thought.

So, I just wanted to say thank you? I always felt so very guilty for liking stuff that *my* side of the internet wouldn't even look twice at, because most of spaces that use my language don't care either way, but English speaking side of the internet keeps telling you, you are a creep for liking (And I was literally a minor then I first started feeling like this). I just.. it's so refreshing to see that there's sides of eng speaking fandoms which aren't either a puritists who would devour you for saying or doing ONE minor wrong thing they consider unforgivable, or straight up (usually amab) creeps who find excuses for predatory behavior in real life and are straight up homophobic and transfobic.

It always felt like I either don a persona of being this.. strange ideal of a person with views that I don't fully agree with, blame myself for liking things I'm not supposed to, and keep very very quiet about myself and my interests or I'm joining the other side which is even worse. I, as a young adult woman (can't even drink yet if I was living in America), always felt the need to fit.fit.fit. And now that you pointed out how misogynistic most of the views of those people are, I feel less... uncertain? At least I know there's things I need to think on, and I might've viewed a lot of the things in a way I wouldn't agree with if I had more information. So, I wrote this to say thank you, and to tell you that while people hate you for speaking your truth, your opinions and your strong personality can and will make young adult women like me who don't quite fit, think. It will be reassuring to know that there's someone out there, who is older and more experienced who still likes the same things and is a nice person. Go back ten years or so, and it was a different world regarding sexual minorities.

Few people cared about drag queens performing for adults. Gay marriage controversies were dying down, and anti-gay discrimination was almost entirely in the past. Most people thought that transgenderism was weird, fringe, and basically harmless. There were so few transgender people that the issue rarely came up, and few people cared much.

Even the gay marriage debate was more about the term than the legal rights–opponents wanted to carve out a space for traditional marriage, but most were no longer objecting to a legal equivalent in civil unions.

Fast forward a few years and alphabet ideology is everywhere, and the alphabet ideologists are basically tied with the pro-Hamas crowd and the Climate Change cultists for being the worst people to share spaces with. They are even more obnoxious than vegans.

It is all about power and privilege. There is an inverse relationship between the oppression claimed by activists and the actual power and privilege they wield.

We see this everywhere we look. Few of us would care much about the few actual transgender people among us, but the recruitment of children, the obnoxious, in-your-face demands for obeisance, the mutilation and sterilization of children…it is and is intended to be an assault on the dominant culture.

Alphabet ideologists demand to rule the rest of us. What we say, what we think, who can play what sports, what spaces woman may or may not use in privacy. Unless we kiss their feet, date them on demand, pretend that men can be pregnant, or use their newly invented pronouns we are to be canceled.

A great case is this privileged activist Tommy Dorfman, a celebrated trans activist who uses his male name (no deadnaming, at least), is clearly male, but bullies a working guy for “misgendering” him.

Dorfman complains that he is suffering human rights abuse when the poor gate agent is just trying to do his job. Dorfman is a celebrated actor who sponsors products for major brands, and yet he feels the need to get a guy fired for saying “sir.”

Why? Because he can, and having the power to destroy others has always been attractive to a certain kind of tyrannical personality. The destruction itself is the goal.

This is why the rules are always changing. You literally cannot keep up with the changes in the pronouns, the rules, the things that get you canceled. As I have written before, there are many lists of dos and don’ts, pronouns, and microaggressions to avoid, and in the end, they all note that you have to keep checking back because the lists change and expand.

The message is clear: we are in charge, and you must obey. And, of course, we are coming for your children and there is nothing you can do about it. You must pay for our surgeries, kiss our feet, call us what we want, and if you don’t, you will lose your job and social standing.

And we will plaster your shame all over the internet. Because, as you see, not only did this activist shame this gate agent in public but blasted his face across the world. It is about destruction.

All the Left-wing activists have similar strategies. They destroy our art, deface our monuments, block our movement, poop on the street, and demand we embrace their assault on everything we value.

If the activists tried to explain, persuade, debate, or even lobby the level of conflict would drop to almost nothing. I would still oppose them, but I wouldn’t spend so much time fighting them.

But they are horrible people. Terrible, horrible, no good very bad people. And they must be defeated.

In case some people were unaware, the evangelical sect of American Christianity meets all or most common criteria for cults, functionally differing from others only in scale and magnitude. A key aspect of how cults develop and maintain power is the notion of thou shalt not question the ideals nor figureheads. We see this mirrored on the pseudoactivist wing of leftist communities, and it’s easily the biggest and most highly visible red flag (c.f. the bipartisan use of “cancel culture”).

Another common tactic is the process of proselytizing for community insulation rather than growth. This isn’t so much deliberately manufactured with leftist pseudoactivists, but the results are functionally the same; proselytizers go forth into the unenlightened world, make an absolute nuisance of themselves (rarely recruiting anyone), and return to the only community that will accept them and comfort them after their profound rejection by the nonbelievers. If the tactic works especially well, the cultist will alienate their preexisting friends and family and they will have nowhere to go and no vital social support if they do decide to leave.

The strange thing about growing up in conservative Christianity and then leaving it behind is that there are a lot of secular/progressive spaces that engage in similar thinking while sincerely believing their ideas are counter to conservative ones. So I thought I would just make a list of things I was taught within conservative Christianity, the stuff that was either the core of our beliefs, or the social dynamics that we created. Some of the language I use is specifically either scriptural, or Christian-speak.

This list isn’t to say “stop thinking this way.” This is actually intended to simply be informative because sometimes social justice spaces assume, “we are crafting our ideals in opposition to conservative ideals therefore whatever we think surely must be the opposite of whatever they think,” without ever seeming to know that their language and ideals look and sound the same.

So, let’s begin:

Sin-leveling: x is bad, and y is bad, and all bad things deserve an equal reaction

Sin-leveling part 2: because all things are equally bad, there’s nothing wrong with inverting the consequences. Hurting others becomes acceptable (because it’s no different than doing something distasteful), doing something distasteful is unforgivable (because it’s no different than doing something harmful)

Avoid all appearance of evil: if I assume that your behavior looks wrong, then you are wrong, even if further context would say otherwise. You should avoid doing anything that others would see as wrong because you are not allowed the benefit of the doubt or to defend yourself.

Sin by association: x company contracted with y company. Y company engages in something sinful, which means x company approves of said sinful thing which means if you purchase from x company, you are condoning, supporting, and have actually committed the sin.

Think only on what is good: or as the pastor of my old church liked to call it, “garbage in, garbage out.” Whatever ideas, thoughts, words, arguments, stories, pictures, books, movies, songs, friends, love you put in your head will create the desire to become that. If you want to be good, you must avoid any bad thought because you will “slip” into wanting it and then be unable to stop yourself from being it. (For example, type into google “is secular music” and click on the autocomplete of “a sin”)

Language as an in-group test: if you do not describe your life, experiences, and beliefs with the exact same vocabulary and in-group speak, you are either not really one of us, or you’re someone who hasn’t thought through their ideas as deeply as I have.

By any means necessary: Also known in the ex-Evangelical world as “lying for Jesus.” If my words create the necessary beliefs and actions in others, then it doesn’t matter if I am exaggerating, saying half-truths, or using manipulative language, because I’m saving others and helping them do what’s right.

Touch not God’s anointed: any critiques of those our community trusts, critiques of those we’ve deemed “the good ones,” are actually people trying to sow discord and disunity to destroy our community and their voice should be silenced because they must be lying.

Judge not lest ye be judged: A scripture that we throw at people when someone says our leadership is abusive, a scripture we cry is being taken out of context when we want to harshly critique someone ourselves. 

There’s more, lots more, but this post is already fairly long. Once again, though, this isn’t intended to be combative. I just want people to know the actual social dynamics that a lot of us grew up with in conservative Christianity communities, so they know when sometimes they’re sharing those social dynamics, not countering them.

I prove alot of explanations that sometimes I don't agree with, but others do and that's why I included it for context and not to be hateful or spiteful or silly. I witnessed first handed the chaos that ensued in my own college because he won and I live in the UK.

Someone slammed their head into a wall. Someone went to cancel a scholarship. Someone people left to call families.

And I don't think 1 post about "please don't harass doc's family for culture differences" will fix everything. Because it won't. And I even mentioned why I didn't think I'd fix anything, I do believe. And apologied for language used because I believe those opinions are disgusting and unkind.

I'm mainly a Minecraft blog (shocking ik), and post alot of minecraft content and rarely post other content. And that's why the post is put into the context of assuming you didn't know/other people didn't know. Because I don't know the age demographic of my "audience" and I don't know who sees it.

Ok, So… Y’all are getting (some of) my thoughts on the Rings of Power content we’ve gotten. (Because I am a hardcore Tolkien fan, and am very excited). You have any (polite) disagreements or just want to get excited about the show with me, just DM me. I love conversations.

Pros:

- Was that a scene with the Feanorians?!?! Do I get to see my favourite Tolkien character on screen ???? (It’s Maedhros, yes i know he’s problematic)

- Beautiful cinematography and music, I’m obsessed

- Watching assholes get triggered over there being diversity in the show is so fking funny. Their anger only makes me stronger.

- Celebrimbor being a main character!!!! Celebrimbor being a main character!!!!

- Very Attractive People, and I’m a little excited for the romance subplot they’re planning (im a romantic, don’t judge me)

- Harad Content! Harad Content! Harad Content! Please tell me more people are as excited to see Harad as I am. I love seeing different fantasy cultures and ways of life between different lands in shows.

Don’t know enough to have any more opinions.

Cons/Complaints:

- Bigots and Purists can F off. I’m tired of your dog whistling and superiority complexes. Let people be excited, don’t ruin this.

- Bigger beard for the dwarf princess, as well as longer hair for the elves. Amazon could have given their OC elf the most stunning braids but they were cowards. (Although, I’m kinda into Elrond’s look? Don’t hate me?)

- Kinda wish Celebrimbor looked more elf-like and not just a older dude with pointy ears? He’s one of my fav Tolkien characters so I’m gonna give him a chance tho.

- The actor who plays Gil Galad is married to Kaya Scodelario who is the love of my life and so I’m very jealous of him for being married to her and for being in this show. (I have high hopes for his role tho, so I’ll give him a pass)

That’s it for serious cons, since I haven’t watched the show yet and don’t wanna speculate on stuff I’m not informed about (unlike an irritating amount of “fans”)

Neutrals:

- Don’t know if that pale character is really Sauron. If yes, cool, hope they do well. If not, I’d be really interested to see what the show does with the character. Since I assume they’ll be a dark Sauron cultist or something. And I don’t mind the design actually. I think they looks cool, although if they are Sauron, if that’s his “fair” form, it could be a lot less sketchy.

- Interested about how they’re gonna go with Galadriel. Not super picky about it tho.

- Really hoping the asshole Tolkien fans don’t review bomb this show, because if it gets cancelled before all 5 seasons are aired Imma be heartbroken.

It occurs to me that one relatively sympathetic aspect of these people might be that, their founding population having been abducted as small children and raised by an inhuman monster, they might lack a lot of the stupid prejudices that regular humans in a low-tech setting are likely to have if real history is any guide.

Think about what’s going to happen with that first generation. It sounds to me like the dragon abducts them when they’re very young, the better to brainwash them. The dragon is probably both ignorant of and uninterested in a lot of human culture, it just wants to raise up some dragon-worshipping brainwashed thralls. Which is probably going to be bad in a lot of ways, but it also means the transmission chains of a lot of stupid prejudices get broken. There’s no-one around to tell those kids that darker-skinned people are inferior. There’s no-one around to stigmatize left-handedness and force the left-handed ones to hide being left-handed. There’s no-one around to socialize them into complicated and rigid gender roles and tell them men should be in charge. There’s no-one around to tell them they shouldn’t share a washing bowl with a Cagot. There’s no-one around to tell them some people are Untouchables and karmically deserving of low status and suffering and you should take a ritual bath if one of them touches you. The dragon probably doesn’t even know about half that stuff and doesn’t care about most of the other half. The dragon might actually actively discourage a lot of prejudices like this if they do show up, because they’d interfere with its human stock being efficient thralls (“You’re telling me you want to reduce the military effectiveness and productivity of my dragon cult because you don’t want to share tools with people who have a particular surname? Yeah, no, we’re not doing that; any tool that is not personal property belongs to me and will be used by any of my thralls who is doing work that requires it”).

What happens when these kids reach puberty? The dragon probably wants its dragon cult making babies, so it’s probably going to tell them how baby-making works and make it clear it expects them to make some new thralls for it sooner or later, but as long as the thralls are making approximately the right number of babies and aren’t killing each other it probably won’t care much about the details. So... These people are going to start experiencing attraction to each other and sometimes falling in love with each other, and... Some of them are going to fall in love with people of the same sex, and there’s no-one around to tell them homosexuality is wrong. Some of them are going to fall in love with more than one person, and there’s no-one around to tell them they aren’t allowed to have multiple partners, and there’s no-one around to tell them that people who already have a partner are “taken” and off-limits, and there’s no-one around to tell them that if you’re a man another man having sex with your female partner is a huge deadly insult to your honor. The original write-up talks about dragons selectively breeding their human thralls, so there might be significant reproductive control and coercion happening, but it’s probably pretty orthogonal to the sort that happens in patriarchal societies.

This is simplifying in ways that might paint an over-optimistic picture. Even small children may have picked up some prejudices from the societies they spent their first years in. And some of that stuff might get reinvented. Children often detect and react with hostility to difference even without much or any prompting from adults, and I suspect some prejudices of this sort are ultimately rooted in that sort of reflexive xenophobia. And I think at least a rough “men do more of the fighting and heavy labor, women do more of the child-care and less strength-intensive work” division of labor is probably going to emerge, because it’s a natural and logical reaction to physical sex differences in a low-tech context. Though on that note, I can think of a few factors that might work to keep dragon cults more gender-equal than regular human societies:

Dragons likely won’t want their cults getting too numerous. A numerous cult would be harder to control and more likely to develop power centers independent of the dragon. Dragon cults would also be more secure against external threats than other human groups of their size, because they’ve got a giant fire-breathing monster on their side, so they wouldn’t have as much pressure to make sure they’ve got lots of fighters to defend their land (though the dragon would likely be a “tall poppy,” it’s likely that lots of people will want to kill it to stop its depredations and plunder its hoard and have the glory of defeating it, so that’ll partly cancel that out). Put this together, dragon cults might be at least a little less pro-natalist than their regular human neighbors. I mean, they’ll probably still have big families by modern standards because of how many people die young in low-tech societies, they’ll probably still need to have 3-5 children per couple just for replacement rate, but this might make at least a little difference. And high birth rates, large families, and pro-natalism are an important load-bearing pillar of strong gender roles; it’s not an accident that we started treating women a lot better after we invented or popularized vaccination, antibiotics, indoor plumbing, and birth control pills (the first three things made high birth rates unnecessary and even undesirable, the last thing made low birth rates easier to maintain). Compared to other human women, dragon cult women might have more time and energy to devote to things that aren’t making and raising babies.

I think dragon cults are also likely to be socially hierarchical but economically communalistic, with little private property and relatively high social mobility. From the original write-up it sounds like dragons want totalitarian control over their cults, so they won’t want their cults to have power centers independent of the dragon. Dynastic families and sizeable accumulations of private property are power centers independent of the dragon, so the dragon will discourage their formation. In low-tech male privilege societies powerful families and stable inherited property are major bulwarks of patriarchy; they make it important who your father is, and they make it important to avoid family instability that may result in division of the property or otherwise endanger the family’s claim to the property. If patrilineal descent chains don’t matter much, women are likely to have more sexual freedom and by knock-on effects of that more freedom in general and are under less pressure to marry early and produce lots of potential heirs for their husbands.

Finally, the write-up mentioned dragons selectively breeding their human thralls for size and strength, and maybe implied also selectively breeding them for precocious physical maturity. If they’re doing that, dragons might also selectively breed their thralls for reduced sexual dimorphism. From the dragon’s point of view, why wouldn’t you want to double your pool of potential strong fighters? So after two or twenty centuries of selective breeding dragon cult women might have size and upper body strength a lot closer to males. Dragon cults would probably still have some kind of “men do more of the fighting and women do more of the work compatible with having a baby or child in close proximity” gendered division of labor, but reducing sexual dimorphism would tend to weaken gendered divisions of labor and hence gender roles in general.

I mean, we’re talking about a creepy high-control cult here. And “nobody was there to tell them...” would definitely have potential dark sides, like “nobody was there to tell them rape and incest are wrong” and “nobody was there to tell them that an adult shouldn’t casually slap around or beat up a child when they’re angry at them.” They’d probably develop some taboos on that sort of stuff just to keep their society somewhat functional, and the dragon would probably give them rules against the aspects of that sort of behavior that might lower their efficiency as thralls or endanger the viability of the dragon cult, but “basically functional levels of rape, incest, and casual physical abuse of children” might look pretty horrifying (though given what a lot of actual historical societies looked like I’m not sure they’d really be worse on the rape and casually beating up their children fronts than their non-dragon cult neighbors). So this isn’t going to be any kind of utopia. If dragon cultists showed up in a story they’d probably be bad guys. But, like:

“And because they serve dragons, they sometimes get the good stuff. Picture a 15- year-old kid with the physique of Conan, wearing the golden armor of ancient kings and armed with magic spears. The kid is also illiterate, covered in fleas, and thinks that humans were created by dragons.”

I suggest that this kid might be a girl, who has a girlfriend and a boyfriend, in a world where a female person being a warrior and interacting on a footing of easy familiarity and equality with rough violent men and having multiple partners is very much not a regular thing in most human societies. And while from one point of view this person is a brainwashed slave of a giant fire-breathing mammal-like reptile, she can look forward to having a lot more personal freedom than most non-dragon cult women (e.g. the 15 year old farmer’s daughter whose father and older brother she just eviscerated). Would fit into: “And its not hard fascism either.  Their barbarian tribes don't chafe at the collar.  They've believe in their dragon.  And when you stand in front of a dragon, you can see why.” If that girl has some idea of how much less freedom and power she’d probably have if she’d been born into one of the surrounding more normal human societies, that knowledge surely cements her loyalty to her dragon. It’d make the whole thing more insidious in a way.

Aside: the one thing that kind of bugged me about the Goblin Punch post is where it says dragon cultists “never build cities or roofs.” So what do they do when it rains, or is freezing cold, or burning hot? I’m interpreting this as they live in tent-like structures and don’t build permanent houses with thick walls, cause otherwise that bit is just grimderp.

TERFs are just the Lefty Woke version of Nazis.

Both in the sense that they’re a bunch of vile, bigoted monstrous cultists created for the express purpose of bringing harm to marginalized identities, and also because they’re the perfect scapegoat for Authoritarians to deflect all criticism towards in the “Everyone I don’t like is an X” fashion.

The more bullshit I read from privileged zoomers and naïve college kids from Blue State inner cities about how “Saying Queer is a slur is TERF rhetoric!”, the more convinced I am that “TERF” is undergoing the exact same metamorphosis into a Wolf-Crying boogyman as Nazism/Fascism has, especially in the last 5 years.

People have been complaining about the term TERF being thrown around haphazardly where it doesn’t apply the exact same way lefty nutters claim everyone to the right of Mao is a Nazi and that there’s no possible reason anyone would ever vote Republican or Third party besides Muh Fash even if you’ve been constantly burned and scorned by the Democratic party, it’s pretty obvious to me that it’s going to become a majorly popular past time to accuse people of being TERFs based on fucking nothing except “How dare you not agree with me on this topic.” And anyone with half a brain knows the TERFs are going to take advantage of it, just like the Nazis can, have and WILL CONTINUE to take advantage of Cancel Culture and the constant crusade of slander and ostracization encouraged by clout-chasing dipshits. Some people legitimately do not want to be called Queer. No matter how much academic pretentious garbage you spew at them, it’s not going to change the fact that many parts of America and the world over use the term as an insult, a slur, and a hurtful label to demean, belittle and oppress those who are not in the majority group. No amount of “But it’s ~Reclaimed~!” talk is going to fucking erase all the hurt that people feel or make them buy into your rhetoric, especially not when you outright harass and abuse them and try to bully them into accepting it. 

If it’s true that the TERFs have outright started saying that Queer is a slur, that’s not a confirmation that you were right this whole time, no. It means that you morons have been repeating this cultish line of thinking so often that the TERFs have caught wind of it, and they’re gonna use it to recruit the people you’ve hurt into their ranks, just like the Nazis seduced the poor disenfranchised Germans of Post-WWI Germany and the disillusioned American lower classes today. 

I fucking GUARENTEE you that’s how they got J.K. Rowling on top of manipulating her based on some pre-existing trauma, they convinced her that the reaction to her woke contributions to post-completion Harry Potter weren’t the result of her being incredibly tonedeaf, they told her it was some ridiculous conspiracy about how [Insert slur for trans people here] hated her for being a cis woman and were ungrateful in the face of trying to appease to them. The same way that Nazis point to BLM and Antifa and claim that their conspiracies about “White Genocide” were true and it’s what causes people to believe them when they say “Anti-racism means Anti-White.” 

And I can’t figure out whether if it’ll be easier or harder to push back against TERFs as a result. Because on the one hand everyone knows what a Nazi is, what they did, and why they’re awful (or at least they used to before the Left apparently just decided to resort to constant Godwinning out of sore loserdom), whereas nobody outside of Discourse circles knows what TERF stands for. It’s not Mainstream enough. And furthermore the only thing that distinguishes TERFs from regular RadFems is that they believe everything RadFems do but they’re also Transphobic, and everyone who’s looked at tumblr and twitter for more than five minutes knows that Self-proclaimed Feminists are more than happy to file off the “TE” and keep the “RF.” But on the other hand TERFs are even less subtle than Nazis and probably easier to spot as a result of them not having the same gigantic backlash that the Nazis did post-WWII that forever ingrained them as the ultimate evil of western civilization in our public consciousness. Nazis have had a long time to hone the craft of dogwhistles and the art of grooming potential recruits by way of acting welcoming and accepting of the downtrodden and rejected and then hooking them with their bullshit about how DA JOOZ control the world the way cults do. Whereas TERFs make no effort whatsoever to hide what they’re about with how obsessed they are with how much they slobber over Vaginas and related parts of Cis female anatomy, their constant usage of slurs, their shaming of bi women, their constant fawning over and attempting to seduce lesbians, and even outright calling themselves TERFs to the point of putting it in their usernames. They’re more honest about it. 

Either way I’m not looking forward to what the rest of the 2020′s brings. 2010 was horrible enough with constant politicization, I’m not seeing improvement anywhere in sight.

My review of Psycholonials

Okay, jumping from puddle to puddle doesn’t sound like a good idea. I’m going full in into deep waters. It will do better for you too.

So, what’s Psycholonials, you may ask? Let me remind you:

Psycholonials is the newest work of Andrew Hussie, a visual novel released episodically in Chapters, starting on February 4th and ending April 20th (hurr durr) of this year. This game is split into nine Chapters, each basically having a timeskip to month at tops.

I’ll try to explain what the story is about without going into spoilers. There will be some non-contextual stuff though so… a little warning.

It’s the 4/20 day, Anno Domini 2020. Our main character is Z, a failure of a human being, living in a garbage cottage on an island. After the latest, weird dream involving some clown god (who may or may not be real), Z decides to start life from the scratch, by going with the way of personally-written years ago, so-called, Jubilite Manifesto… with help from gullible, rich parents of her best friend to some degree.

And that’s how far I’m gonna talk about the plot. If I could summarize it, I would say – it’s better than I thought. It may not be really some kind of s-tier shit, but after hearing some stuff about the story being bad, I was surprised that it was far from being shitty. There are shit elements though.

The biggest con of Psycholonials’ story is how irritatingly political it gets most of the time. Let me clarify, that talking about politics in video games is not a problem. Discussing political ideology or two, and/or showing followers of a particular ideology as enemies is fine in video games. The problem starts when you mention political stuff that isn’t even a year old. Unless you are South Park or a funny-based internet show, you end up looking like a cringy-ass Boomer trying to be preachy about it (and desperate to be hip with kids).

Psycholonials are guilty of this. Sure, it talks about political stuff that can be considered timeless like Imperialism or Colonialism, but on the other hand, it mentions Corona, the Presidential election of 2020, and June 2020’s protests against police brutality just to name a few. People don’t want this shit in video games. They don’t want to be reminded about stuff that happened on Earth moments ago. It all comes down looking like Hussie stopping the story and starting rambling about this shit that I just mentioned from his personal view.

Thankfully, the golden nugget in this pile of shit is that Hussie takes shots at basically everyone to some degree; right-wingers, left-wingers, cultists, capitalists, the Internet, clowns, etc. It makes me more respectful for him. That and not pretending that Cancel Culture doesn’t exist.

Okay, enough about politics. There are other things to talk about. For instance, after each odd-numbered chapter, you get to pick the next action for Z, and each time it basically comes down to choosing either Continue going downward spiral or Start acting reasonably you daft cow. It’s all a trick. Everytime you try to choose what to do, you get locked from both choices, with some entity telling you that you are not ready yet. Even the last chapter adds a twist to it.

I think I’m leaning more into liking that idea rather than hating it, and it’s probably due to how it influences the main character. Speaking of which…

As much as I don’t want to compare this comic to Homestuck (because it would be a complete disservice), in this case, I have to compare Z to Vaska from Hamsteak. Both characters are written to be as divisive as possible, acting like complete pieces of shit while having just enough positive traits to not end up completely unlikable. But truth to be told, Z ends up basically as human Vriska 2.0. She is basically a better-written character than that blue-blooded twat. Yes, she does such heinous actions that you want her to be put down for good. But on the other hand, she’s more complex and likable (to some degree) than Huge B8tch because:

1. Her backstory makes you feel sorry for her more than Huge B8tch,

2. Her Sanity Slippage throughout the story gives some justification to her action,

and 3. Unlike Huge B8tch, when Zhen changes for the better, she actually stays as a better person!

Zhen basically ends up having to live with what she’s done, which somewhat counts as karma for her, unlike Huge B8tch where personality-wise, she basically ends up back to square fucking one at the end of Homestuck.

As for the other characters, there isn’t really much to talk about. Everyone asides from Abby (who is my favorite character), and probably one of the clown characters from Chapters 6 and 7, basically end up more like a plot device to move Zhen forward rather than having an actual personality.

As for the visual stuff, it looks good. If you checked out Hussie’s previous work, you will feel like you are reading another MSPA comic made by him. Even after years of not drawing, he still got it and knows how to draw. The real-life backgrounds may feel off to some of you (I’m somewhere in between in this case).

The music is very good, but unfortunately, it has tendencies to be unfitting. The tone of the scene will be serious and yet you will hear the looping, happy, joyful music in the background. Complete musical dissonance.

But, let me tell you something folks. The last two music tracks that play at the end of Chapter 9, it’s something amazing. It makes you forget all of the cons this game has. It basically says All right lad, you survived to the end, have a reward.

And that’s basically it for Psycholonials. It wasn’t really that good but it turned to be surprisingly better than I thought. Would I recommend it? I mean, yeah, sure, if only for the two ending tracks. Most Chapters take around 30-45 minutes and all of it took me almost six hours to reach the end.

After finishing this VN, I am still wondering where would it go if it received a sequel, ‘cause I feel like there is more to tell about this universe. But on the other hand, maybe it will be for the better if it just stopped on only one game. Any more stuff and it would probably end up in the same spot as modern Homestuck (both the franchise and the fandom).
