We made it to Jasper, but there's a Grizzly bear roaming outside our cabin! Our Oprah inspired "Year of Adventure" is in full swing. Luci, our daughter, met our 5am bus days ago. After three hours sleep we hiked trails by alpine lakes and soaring mountains. The next day our daughter lead us up Everest. Well, felt like it. Pausing for breath, I glance around. Lucy's works front desk in a remote lodge. "If you see a bear do NOT run," she had warned. Johnny, Lucy and I are hiking bear country in the Canadian Rockies. Lucy's trained. She knows what to do. We're safe. Or are we? "Do you have bear spray?" "No." I groan. Luci and Johnny continue climbing. Hands on thighs, I'm on my own. Bear spray should be carried everwhere. Luci should know better. Before we arrived, a crazed bear had charged her. A hiker approaches. "Any bears?" Wiping sweat from my brow I wait for reassurance that doesn't come. "Not so far." The woman pauses, her eyes narrow behind her sunnies. Crimson lipstick mirrors mine. Relaxing I smile, but not for long. The hikers brows meet. Never anticipated what came next. The woman's pretty lips pursed. "My girlfriend surprised a bear a trail like this. The Grizzly ripped off both her arms." So, yeah. Oprah, thanks for asking. Our Year of Adventure is off to an epic start. We survived the Greyhound bus. If we can survive Canadian bears we may board the Eurodam intact. Climbing, I frown and reflect. How can you survive without arms? Or a head? You can't. Johnny's still whining about his puny broken wrist. Snap! My 'Aha!' moment. Women are tough. Men are whimps.
