Thoughts on Storie from Styx musical

I want to start this off with a disclaimer

I'm going to be mostly talking about Persephone, Hades, and Demeter

This is just Act 1, and these three will take up most of my discussion

Don't tell me this is just inspired by ____it doesn't need to be accurate, because I agree with you!

It doesn't mean I can't compare or explain my thoughts on what works or doesn't work for me in comparison to the original myths

I mean NO hate, nor do I want to shame people, and I'm not saying you have to write anything a certain way

I change many things in my own writing of the gods, which I know a lot of people would hate

I talk about art out love for it or the vision, not out of malice

I also need everyone to know I LOVE these gods and the relationship between Hades and Persphone, so I'm not biased against any of them

Thoughts:

Praise:

1- I'll admit, I was skeptical of Casper's singing prior to the musical. I just didn't like the covers I heard from him, but here? Gorgeous! Amazing vocals that complement the music very well

2- Everyone's vocals are amazing and filled with emotions, the music chosen matches the tone perfectly

3- Hera joining Zeus was good characterization of her, the fact they only duet with each other is a nice touch

These two have a complicated relationship in the myths, and I'm glad to see Casper didn't make them hostile from the start. It's such a simple decision that I adore!

4- I like using the Muses to tell the story, it reminds me of the Iliad beginning with a call for them to tell/sing the story of Achilles' rage

Again, very nice attention to detail!

5- The sound effect on the Muse's voice was explained to bridge between modern times and the mythic times- I believe Casper explained this previously??I love the idea!

I imagine the Muses in a pub singing this into a cheap mic to very lucky mortals

6- I'll get to Demeter later, but if you take her song without the Persephone verse and all the musical context, it's SO PERFECT

Like, I AGREE WITH YOU GIRL!! It just captures her and hell MY feelings too XD!

Everything else:

I'll get this out of the way before anyone comes at me—no, there's not a single version in myths, no Greek or Roman myth EVER says or even implies that Persephone went to Hades willingly, that she knew him in any capacity before he kidnapped her, or that there were any complications between her and Demeter

These are 100% fully modern changes with no basis in myths

Mythology is culture and history, our writings on it don't suddenly become mythology

It's literally a field of study, in college, do they study Madeline Miller's Circe? Or write academic papers on Circe as a source for that ancient civilization? No

The original myth is literally the most feminist thing a society that old ever made

I don't think people fully realize how empowering that myth is

Nor do they bother to think that many women in thirdworld countries still live that reality to an extent

In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Persephone is not feeling trapped or bothered by living on the surface with her mother

literally the opposite:

"She [Persephone] was having a good time, along with the daughters of Okeanos."

I FEEL LIKE I'M TRAPPED OH, I FEEL LIKE I'M FROZEN I FEEL LIKE I’LL NEVER BE THE CHOSEN I’LL NEVER BE THE ONE TO TAKE A STAND

More examples:

I’LL BE YOUR QUEEN, NOT SOME IDEAL FOR BEAUTY SHACKLED ME ABOVE, DOWN HERE, I’D LIKE TO BUILD A LOVE I’M ASKING YOU, DO YOU TRULY SEE ME?

"He seized her against her will, put her on his golden chariot And drove away as she wept. She cried with a piercing voice, calling upon her father [Zeus], the son of Kronos, the highest and the best. But not one of the immortal ones, or of human mortals, heard her voice."

The musical is slightly better than other adaptations of Demeter

she at least seems to be unaware of Persephone's unhappiness

Persephone even says:

MY INNOCENCE IS GUARDED YET MY DAD HAS ME DISCARDED THAT’S WHY A MOTHER’S LOVE’S MY SWORD AND SHIELD

The issue is that Demeter and Persephone don't have any of that. Persephone wasn't happy with Hades at first:

"He (Hermes) found the Lord inside his palace, seated on a funeral couch, along with his duly acquired bedmate, the one who was much under duress, yearning for her mother, and suffering from the unbearable things inflicted on her by the will of the blessed ones."

Then Hades gives a very sweet speech that he'll treat her well (recommend reading it), and you know what Persephone's reaction to it ?

"So he spoke. And high-minded Persephone rejoiced. Swiftly she set out, with joy, but he [Hādēs] gave her, stealthily, the honey-sweet berry of the pomegranate to eat, peering around him. He did not want her to stay for all time over there."

And this is Persephone retelling what happened herself to Demeter:

“So then, Mother, I shall tell you everything, without error. When the messenger came to me, the swift Argos-killer, with the news from my father, the son of Kronos, and from the other dwellers in the sky, that I should come from Erebos, so that you may see me with your own eyes and let go of your wrath and terrifying mēnis against the immortals, then I sprang up for joy, but he, stealthily, put into my hand the berry of the pomegranate, that honey-sweet food, and he compelled me by biē to eat of it."

I don't think I can make it clearer how close and loving they are, so instead :

Why it matters to keep their loving relationship and how it's empowering both

It is an arranged marriage, but both weren't made aware of it.

They were happy together

Persephone is taken

She screams for help

She screams so loud for her father or anyone to help

Nobody hears, and those who do, don't interfere

Her voice gets so loud her mom from far away finally hears

She comes running, Is her daughter going to get raped like she was?

Not many things can hurt gods, after all

She asks and walks the earth calling for Persephone, until finally, Hecate tells her she was taken, but she doesn't know who

They search together aimlessly until Helios, the sun itself, feels pity

He tells her who took Persephone, but he also tells her to give up... basically, suck it up.

Hades is powerful, and he makes for a far better husband than most others

Persephone could do worse

Worse could happen to Persephone

Really, this isn't that bad of an outcome

She won't accept it. The whole world will suffer the same grief the gods have caused her

If her daughter won't be free, then she'll hold the world hostage instead

And it works

Her daughter is back, safely in her arms again

Yet, she's bound to the Underworld for some time of the year

That's not so bad, is it? She won. THEY won

Persephone is free, even if it's only part of the year

But she's not fully trapped down there. She makes her own place. She embraces her darkness and title.

Hades treats her with respect and kindness

Sure, the marriage isn't ideal, but he doesn't just love her—he respects her

And maybe, she can learn to love him too

Gods have different standards, after all

One last thing

I didn't know where to add this so, here

in the musical, Persphone calls out Zeus for disregarding her before Hades even came to the picutre, I actually like this addition

It doesn't really have any basis in myths but it's a clever way of interpreting the lack of myths regarding her and Zeus ( or even her siblings you can argue )

That being why Demeter became her sword and shield

Everything about that verse's implications and set up I love and never saw anyone make something similar to it!

Which adds to my sadness that we're still painting Demeter as unreaonsable or at least doesn't hear her daughter out, Demeter seems like a none abusive version of Mother Gothel ?? this is best way I can describe my feelings

JORGE CANT HURT US MORE ISNT ? [WISDOM SAGA EDITION | SPOILERS]

at the end of the thunder saga I was crying my eyes out. But hey, I said to myself, as an unquestioning optimist. Now that all the crew are dead, no one's going to die, so no more emotional damage, it's DONE, and he can't do the pancake thing again, Jay! Ahhhh. I was optimistic and naive. I'd forgotten that Mr Jay was as crazy as I was. Or worse. So here we go, rewinding the traumas!

Legendary :

legendary spared us quite a bit at the beginning, at least all the sweet stuff with Telemachus playing Disney princesses. Only argos got me, but then argos is ‘only’ in the animatics. well, I'm going to count the animatics because I was at the livestream.

And then antinous. It's not so much the trauma as the distress of telemachus that was touching. And I jumped up when I heard antinous' words. I was expecting threats, vulgarity, in short, for him to be hurtful, but I wasn't expecting that.

little wolf

Little Wolf was also quite calm. What I mean by that is that the trio of songs shared by Athena and Telemachus can be touching, that Antinous is worrying, the songs aren't bathed in the same dark, worrying and pessimistic atmosphere as those in Thunder Saga. Athena brings light and hope to Telemachus and you think ‘that's it, a goddess against all this rubbish, it'll be over in no time’. Even if telemachus takes a beating against antinous, he's got an impressive level up and with just a little more help from athena he'll be able to beat everyone.

We'il be fine

when we'il be fine, i screamed, because ATHENA CHARACTER ARC. Because she calls odysseus her friend, she calls telemachus good kid, because you feel the chemistry between the two and it's incredible. you feel all the hope in this song, and telemachus is definitely the reincarnation of polites. And the reference to your light is sublime.

Love in paradise

the little recap at the beginning of love in paradise is nice, especially in animatic, I was riveted. I have to admit that for Love in Paradise I was really waiting for a slightly comic song where Calypso acts like a 2 year old fangirl. I totally underestimated Jay. Already. 1. the music grabbed me right in the heart. And…. sorry but the depressive part of the song? ‘ody, get away from the lenge’. I thought polites couldn't fool me any more. LOST. JUST LET ME CLOSE MY EYES, MY OPENS ARMS. odysseus's howl at the end broke my heart. You could really feel his despair. I couldn't even see ‘im a monster now’ (not the raw raw raw version the edgy version), I just saw a depressed, borderline suicidal guy. heartbreaking.

God games

god games. i was expecting a punchy, catchy, song. A great song. But i was not expecting the end. (i do a little post about, and 2 other about athena)

in other words, ZEUS STAGGERING HIS OWN DAUGHTER, HIS FAVORITE DAUGHTER. AND HER, WALKING IN THE LIGHTNING, MOTIVED BY A VISION OF THE FAMILY SHE IS FIGHTING FOR, FALLING ON THE FLOOR IN HER OWN BLOOD AND BEGGING HIS FATHER (WHO TRIED TO KILL HER) TO LET GO HIS FRIEND AND PASSED OUT OR DYING WE DONT KNOW.

this is literally just a rant about how fucking incredible genloss is and how much it's inspiring me so don't feel obliged to read this if it comes up on your dashboard or whatever

I'm a theater kid, I've been a theater kid since second grade, and I've had no clue what I want to do with my life because I love doing so many things, art and writing and teaching people things and so much and my favorite part of acting is improv

and watching genloss like

I want this to become something that people can do

I want to share the stories that I create I want to be able to do stuff like this this is so cool

generation loss has made me realize that not only do I like forms of horror that I've literally written horror before and I want to be able to share it in a way that makes me feel good

If people want to get into film and acting and stuff there's articles and things about what to study in college and high school and whatever but what the fuck type of classes do I take to make my stories able to be told in ways like this this is SO COOL

I'm having a creative boost due to genloss being a new hyperfixation and I've already done multiple art things, planned a cosplay, planned an animatic and bought merch

I ordered a stylus so I can actually try to animate my plan and god I hope that my ADHD stays attached to this long enough for me to finish the animation

Even though most of generation loss won't be livestreamed like The Social Experiments, this one was so much improv and it's my favorite type of thing and I just want to be able to do stuff like this

its amazing

I wasn't going to watch genloss, despite watching Ranboo's content for the past 2 and a half years because I'm "not a horror person" but my friend convinced me to watch it and now it's all I can think about it's so so good the improv, the acting, the storyline. I can't wait to see the rest of the storylines and everything

Happy holidays, guys. I gotta roadmap of what I wanna do for next year and beyond. None of these are dated, cause of my inconsistent work schedule, and I'm still on hiatus, but heres what to look forward to

*Klonoa headcanon voice video. This has been teased on my Bluesky, but Im planning on having 2 animatic videos that are just different voice ideas I had in mind for him. One for Janga, one for everyone else. The sneak peek at the former will be released shortly

*Speaking of Janga, he's getting a music video alongside that. It'll be something, I'll tell you that much.

*Another music video relating to Klonoa, this time dedicated to Guntz.

*More LITWTC! I'm thinking of doing the conversation on Bioshock Infinite and part 2 of #WillIsATyrant

*I'm thinking of doing more OC related animations, that are mostly just prototypes for long term projects I wanna do. Can't wait to reveal to the world my terrible voice acting, that's for sure.

*related to the above is a Caddicarus animation I wanna do. I did the edit already, its clocking in at 11 minutes

11/11/2024 - Progress update

// I spent a few hours in the lab yesterday and I created a five second 3D mockup of one of the shots in my film. My goal was, since I'm not able to film myself doing what the characters do in the film, to use 3D character models and have them act as my reference, with the camera movements included. I don't have a lot of experience in 3D but I do really enjoy it and thought that this would make my life easier when it's time to do the 2D animation, as I could use the 3D mockup like a video reference for the characters' poses and the complex camera angles. I have to say, I'm really happy with the result! Although the timing is not perfect, that's something I can adjust in TVPaint later, and at least all of the basic poses and camera angles are there for me to either rotoscope or reference indirectly:)

Since for the rest of the semester, I must be working on a 5-seconds proof of concept for my film, I thought that I would use that shot, having already spent quite some time planning it and making the reference for it (coincidentally, it is exactly 5 seconds long!)

I'm finding myself wishing that I could do my entire film in 3D, but I know that it would not be wise as I just started learning 3D and don't even know how to rig a character yet, let alone properly animate it (I used a premade model for my mockup haha). However, I'm thinking of ways in which I could still inorporate some 3D elements to my film. An idea that I've been toying around with in my mind would be to make a 3D background on top of which I would animate the characters. A friend also suggested that I make the end credits in 3D, which I think could be really interesting!

I do wish the lines were a bit cleaner and sharper, but overall I'm quite happy with the color and general vibes. I'm going to explore ways in TVPaint or After Effect to render the lighting effect more efficiently (for now I only added it by hand, which would be very time consuming if I did it over the entire film).

⟡ Make a turnaround reference for Mars so it's easier to draw her consistently in the long run

⟡ Finish tweaking and reframing the shots in the animatic (it's been dragging on for too long at this point haha)

⟡ As always, continue thinking of sound and music, although the visual aspect is more of a priority in the short term.

I love this show so so so so much and season 2 has been phenomenal so far, this is really reigniting my passion for animation and art in general and I can't wait to take things I love about it and apply it to my own film! Honeywell- it needs to be useful, it needs to prepare these beings for Sayer who won't give them the grace it will

TLOVM Ep 10 Twitch Watch Party Summary

They started off with Grog and Scanlan as V-TUBERS LMAO - and answering silly chat questions, I can't describe this pls just look it up on YT or Twitch it's worth it

- They want a Percy plague covid mask with a voice changer, and would wear it at the grocery store like: "I'd like two apples please. Do you have almond milk? *looking at laundry detergent* You're lucky you're at the bottom of my list" (LOL I NEED IT)

- This is Esme's (Cassandra) first animated series!

- Percy can't talk to Ripley unless his gun is pointed at her cause it has a mic in it (lol)

- Pike needs to take Percy to the temple, but 'Temple' is fantasy for 'Therapist'

- Matt says he told the designers that Ripley was like an evil Elon Musk, sooo just regular Elon Musk

- Percy's one liners are the best, they had to include a lot of them! (Travis: you're dropping nuggets man!)

- Ripley is also traumatized, but Delilah's got her shit together, she gets a lot done

- Taliesin wishes they could have kept 'Did you just shame my ancestors to death?" (Percy to Grog in the De Rolo catacombs), Sam originally was planning a song about this in the first draft

- Matt says it's cool to see the simple maps he drew for the game come to life like the acid trap room

- Taliesin's figured out all the little details about Whitestone down to what's in Percy's office; the mask is mounted on the wall (Matt: I love you so much)

- Scanlan playing heavy metal is why the spell worked this time and he was able to lift everyone. Music composer was like "what? a metal instrumental? for a fantasy show?"

- That's our third ass of the season (Grog), but we really held back - he really puts the ass in acid!

- Ziggurat was pre-calamity, and it's a Knowing Mistress temple and was repurposed for the Whispered One by Delilah

Q&A

Q: Grey, as a voice actor what does it take to craft a character? A: Delilah is like Azula grown up. It's about getting in touch with your inner villain, and finding empathy for them somehow like "oh, she did it for love!" I didn't watch C1 because if I try to copy and fail at it I would beat myself about it and they hadn't gone with me yet even though it was some of the best acting I've ever done but then they went with me! Q: What was the design process like for Delilah? A: Wanted her to have a dark debutante feel, someone who comes from an elevated background and is trying to reclaim it by lording over everyone around her, and there's something a little Tim Burtonesque about her. Whoever is doing her brows is doing a good job, all she needs to do is look at you with her eyebrows like that and that's it

Q: She's on Percy's list but what's Ripley's deal? A: She's made an enemy now of the Briarwoods as well as Percy, everybody hates her! The enemy of her Enemy is your enemy. It's the Loki Dilemma, she's fucked but she's waiting for her moments, she always tries to play the game and always takes it too far and becomes one of the piece in the end (about her changing sides)

*We watch the Cassandra's Betrayal Animatic* Q: Cassandra's betrayal, what was going through your mind on stream and how was it translated into the show? Taliesin: I was very loosey goosey with Percy's backstory, it was just one page and didn't figure out the whole gun thing.

Matt: Basically just "Briarwoods killed my parents and took over Whitestone and I barely escaped then I had a dream about a demon and got inspired to make the first gun" and then I just developed it from there

Taliesin: but then Matt took it and made it so much darker. I didn't know how to react when the betrayal happened, I was just in shock. Percy's like "everything is madness this makes no sense" - it was an emotional seesaw

Q: Acid trap room design? What goes into a good trap? A: The design was so involved with the mechanism of the trap, it was looked great and we made it much bigger so they can move around. In the original game there was 2 walls and they were just stuck there. A good trap or puzzle: I don't need to come up with a specific solution for the trap just like the players to figure it out and come up with creative solutions. Q: Grey, what did you know about Delilah before recording? A: Didn't give me too much information, because I wasn't officially cast yet I was a temporary addition. I was doing scratch and ended up getting in! I was doing scratch once and they wanted an Irish character, so I just changed my name and gave them a little Irish lilt cause they weren't gonna understand an Irish actor if they got one, and got it! All the art and animations I'll be working on in 2023!

Hi, everyone! We're entering a big new year, and I'd like to make a few announcements about all the different projects I'm planning to start and release in the coming year! First of all-

College Adventures will have its final season! Not a big surprise, but I do plan to journal my final semester in college to round out the series- it's been a crazy four years and I can't wait to close them off with you all! I already have several episodes planned! One of which being a REALLY BIG INTERVIEW with an extremely famous animator I managed to land!

Fanart for new releases: JoJo Part 9 will release in February, and hopefully Pokemon Adventures will round up ORAS in their volumes, SwSh in their magazine releases, and hopefully start SV soon! Which of course, means more JoJoMon content! And with more Gen 9 announcements hopefully coming this Feburary with Pokemon Day, I miiiight be able to free up some time and ideas for short voiced animatics too! No promises on that one, though. Do expect a lot more Pokespe content this year, though! Will I make a Pokespe Vines & Memes 3? Hmm... not that soon, but not never!

Pokeani content? Probably not, but who knows? Maybe Riko will surprise me, or maybe she'll also have to suffer 25 years of character assassination * shrugs *

The Guardians of the Galaxy marathon and my final moments with the MCU: I haven't formally announced it, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will by the final MCU project I watch, since James Gunn is moving on to DC and I want to end my MCU experience on a guaranteed high note. In honor of this, I plan on marathoning every film or special that the GotG have appeared in (GotG, GotG Vol 2, Infinity War, Endgame, Love and Thunder, and the GotG Holiday Special), and journaling down all my thoughts on every little character moment and easter egg and why I love this particular wing of the MCU so much. On top of that, you know I'll definitely be making tons of fanart for GotG3 when it drops, and I even have plans to make a voiced animatic in the leadup to its release, even if I'll be extremely busy with animation finals at that time- just because I love this series so much.

Wishful Thinking (Animated Short): I'm really sorry for still being so in the dark on this, but even though I'll be finishing up animation on the short before May, due to legal reasons I can't actually put it on Tumblr or Youtube until it finishes making the rounds at film festivals maybe sometime next year. I'll definitely see if I can put together a trailer at least, once I know for sure what the actual release date will be! I really hope everything goes well with this though- It's my biggest project ever and over three times longer than my last animated short, Flo's Cat Chase, so I really hope a lot of people watch it and like it Q_Q

More voice acting content for other people's projects! While these announcements may also take a while to come out, I will say that I have landed several decently-large voice acting roles in other projects, too! I'll definitely post proper announcements for them here when they come out!

The Great Unknown: Since I graduate from college this May, the rest of the year will probably consist of me moving across the country and trying to find a job- no idea how this will impact my content output, but I hope to spend all my time not working or job hunting making more comics, animations, and voice acting bits to expand my portfolio! I'll try my best to expand my YouTube channel during this time, too! Hopefully I can get a bit closer to my dream of becoming an animation showrunner!

You did such an amazing job with this project honestly!! After hearing the idea for it back in 2021 already had me hooked. Just from how passionately you talked about it then, and as time went on. Everything about what it is really caught me off guard, in a good way! I went expecting that any ideas I had for it what it could be would be wrong. (Some I had were right, as I made a few animatic ideas. One involving the tv head monster and one a random evil company. Honestly just giddy at those being a part of it in general, very well crafted!) You knocked it out of the park with this dude! Even if the first episode was more comedy focused than expected, it actually elevated it for me. The horror in the implications of what was happening. Personally, the only thing that was awkward about your acting was during the first proper "Hetch" interaction in episode 1. But like, that's it. You did such a phenomenal job!! Especially as the streams went on, and the horror ramped up, your acting got more intense!! The genuine horror at the end of episode 2??? LIKE MAN. And just ALL of episode 3... I still have not properly recovered. It all felt so real, and you're acting was because of that. Everyone is their own worse critic, and I hope you can know that this was just the best, in every aspect!! Everything you and the crew did, has blown everyone away.

Generation Loss has been one of those things that made me so excited it's hard to fall asleep in anticipation. It's been so long since I've been this excited about something. You really have got something great here. I can't wait for what generation 2 has in store for us. I hope it also goes all according to plan! :]

Also just as a thing with generation loss and just my content in general is when if I ever make something that just isnt good or enjoyable i'd want to hear it! And you can allow people to have their own opinions of my stuff good or bad I welcome the opportunity to do better :D
