Underrated Mission: Impossible moment that keeps me up at night is in Fallout, after Lane reveals he’s staying behind to die in the explosion, deciding he wants to torture and kill both Benji and Ilsa personally even though he’s confident everyone Ethan cares about will die anyway.
#mission impossible fallout#benji dunn#ilsa faust#mission impossible#i love philip seymour hoffman too but sean harris does not get enough love for the particular brand of sadistic nastiness he plays#can’t stand up against ethan physically so he goes after the two members of the team he feels he can dominate#the first time i saw fallout in theaters this scene nearly gave me a heart attack#something something the two people who keep being underestimated and/or targeted because they’re seen as ‘weaker’#something something women + queer men teaming up against the man obsessed with cis male heteronormative performances of strength#every action scene does tremendous character work but this one really gets me because lane really hates these two#and benji’s been worried the whole time he’ll end up as collateral in ilsa’s pursuit of lane#but benji comes for her anyway and she picks benji’s life over killing lane and completing her mission#i am forever cursed to be obsessed with the relationship dynamics between side characters but these movies especially scramble my brain

Ethan had known when he married his wife that she had some kind of past trauma. At first she would shy away from certain men on the street or in stores. He had thought maybe she had been robbed by someone who was similar looking to these men. He had tried several times to get her to open up to him about it. Each time she would shrug him off.
Then there was the patient right before they got married. The patient had been drunk and angry and swinging at anyone and everything. The night was vivid in his mind. He had been paged to the ER and on his arrival the man had swung knocking Landry over before turning on Alexandra. Ethan was certain he had never moved so fast in his life but Alexandra had handled it. She ducked before delivering a blow to the guy’s stomach.
She turned away from the guy leaving him double over in pain. She walked towards Ethan her face unreadable. Only stopping a moment she told him no person was ever going to swing at her again and get away with it. He knew she wasn’t just saying it but in a way telling him if he ever tried to something she would hit back.
It was that night knew there something more to her story. It had hurt him that she hadn’t felt she could confide him and tell him what had happened, but then he had never gone into all the details of why Harper and he had been on again off again.
After their shifts had ended, his later than hers, he crawled into bed behind her. She had stiffened at first before holding on to the hand that rested on her stomach. He whispered he loved her and that she could tell him anything and it wouldn’t change his love for her. Instead on answering she had turned in his arms and pushed him on to his back.
Tonight however had him running down the stairs and towards the ER faster than he had that night two years ago.
Sienna had sent him a text, ‘Get here now. Something isn’t right. Room 26 ER’
Upon entering the room he stopped dead for a moment taking in the scene in front of him. A man, much like the men she shied away from in public places, was leaning forward in his bed. His hand was wrapped around Alexandra’s wrist and Ethan could tell it would leave marks. A nurse and Sienna stood to the side at loss as what to do. The man’s words did not match his actions.
“We were college sweethearts.” He looks back at Ethan eyeing him.
It was the look in his eyes that made him move. He had wanted to give Alexandra space to make the decision to pull back. They had, had an argument once about Ethan’s need to protect her and since then he’s tried not to be so protective at work.
He wrapped his hand around the man’s wrist twisting it just so that he dropped Alexandra’s in pain. “You are not permitted to touch any doctor or nurse.” Ethan’s authoritative voice cut through the room. He glanced at his wife’s wrist briefly, it was bright red and would need ice.
The man in the bed sat back holding his wrist to his chest. “What gives you the right to touch me like that?” The easy demeanor that was present when Ethan entered the room now gone.
“When you touch one of my staff members in the same manner.” Ethan stepped forward slightly, putting himself in front of Alexandra.
“Alex, baby, was I hurting you?” He smiled over at her.
Alexandra said nothing. Ethan fumed inside. For a moment he wondered if his career really mattered and thought about just knocking one to the guy’s face.
“See doc. We’re fine here.” Grinned up at the older man.
“I’ll have another doctor see to your care.” Ethan turned pushing slightly at Alexandra’s arm to get her to start moving. She did but never looked up at him.
“I want her as my doctor.”
“Too bad.” Ethan shot back as he paused by the door.
“Well three people just saw you assault me. You know I think I need an x-ray. My wrist is really hurting.” When he realized Ethan wasn’t budging on leaving Alexandra, he changed tactic. “I could sue you know?”
“Great, have your lawyer call me lawyer.” Ethan said before shutting the door. His hand settled on Alexandra’s back as he went to lead her away, but she stepped away from him. “You need ice.” He said keeping his tone professional, her actions hurting him.
She nodded and started walking away from him. He glances at the closed door behind him, uncomfortable about leaving Sienna and the nurse in there. “Zaid,” He caught the other man as he passed. “I’ve got an ass.” He nods to the door behind him.
“Say no more.” Zaid almost smiles.
With that taken care of, he follows after Alexandra who’s disappeared. Ethan finds her in the break room with a paper towel of ice on her wrist. She looks as if she’s not there, her eyes are dull and she’s just staring at the wall. There’s an intern sitting at a table watching some show.
“Why don’t we go to my office?” Ethan asks sitting on the edge of the chair beside her.
“I’m fine.” She says.
“Sure and I’m the president.”
She glares at him while getting up and he goes to stand too. She holds a hand out to stop him. “I have work to do.”
With that she’s gone, leaving him. Ethan gets up almost knocking the chair over. The intern looks up and eyes him as Ethan storms out of the room. Instead of going after her, he heads for the bathroom. After throwing up the dinner they had earlier in his office, he needs to distract himself and heads to check on patients.
Alexandra and Ethan would run into each other throughout the evening. She would glance at him but never make eye contact or say anything. For Ethan the want to go back down to the ER and beat the guy up was strong but he knew would do no good. He wanted to protect his wife. It’s his job to do so and he had failed.
The car ride home was awkward and silent. Alexandra sat facing out the window. It wasn’t often he didn’t drive with his hand on hers or her thigh. There was no music only the sound of passing cars. He hoped they could talk when they go to their home or at least she would allow him to actually look over her wrist.
She dropped her stuff by the door. “I’m going to take a shower.” Her tone made it clear she didn’t want company.
Once he heard the shower turn on he went into their room. He glanced at the closed bathroom door before pulling at his tie. Soon everything but his pants were in a pile on the floor. He eyed it, they weren’t ones to leave their clothes lying about. Turned away from them and walked over to the bathroom door. He rested his hands on the frame and his forehead against the door.
He couldn’t take it anymore. He needed to be close to her. She could yell at him or even hit him and he wouldn’t care. It would be better than this silent treatment. He turned the knob relieved it wasn’t locked. The sight that greeted him on the other side broke his heart.
His wife. His feisty, happy, and flirty wife was on sitting on the floor of the standalone shower. Her head resting on her arms on her knees. Without a second thought he was beside her in her pants getting soaked. The water burned but he didn’t move to change it.
“Alexandra.” He whispers. Ethan kneels pulling her to his chest. For a moment she didn’t move before she digs her nails into shoulder and sobs into him. “My darling love, I’ve got you.” He whispers after a moment.
“I thought I was going to marry him.” She chokes out. Ethan closes his eyes tight burring his nose in her wet hair. He knows she needs to say this but the thought of her at some point in her life thinking of marrying another man hurts. He rubs a hand up and down her back trying to provide comfort. This is about her not him.
“He was on the baseball team. At first I thought it was a joke. Why would the popular baseball player be interested in the med student? He showed real interest though. We went out a few time and eventually we got together. He would pull from studying to go out to a party and at first it was fun. Then he would drink too much. His nice guy personality would slip. He would say things, never physical. I finally told one of my friends and she said it was because grades and sports were stressing him out. That, that’s how guys handle stress.”
“I let it go. Then one evening I found him with that friend in bedroom at a party. I left right away. I had no clue that he had left too and was behind me.” She let a sob out. Alexandra started to gasp for air as water filled her mouth and a new tears fell.
“Calm down they can’t hurt you anymore.” He said quietly, moving her slightly away from him, so she could breathe better. “I swear to it Alexandra that guy will never touch you again.” He brought her wrist up to him lips. He kissed her rapid pulse. “I will make this better.” Ethan wasn’t sure how, but he would do everything in his power.
“I need to finish.” She said her voice shaking. He kept her wrist pressed against his lips. “He ended up behind me in my dorm building. He was mad. Mad at me for walking in him. I told him to go away and started up the steps. He followed cussing me out. We got to the first landing-” She paused taking a breath. She looked at him then for the first time. Her eyes were red and puffy but they weren’t as dull as earlier.
“He grabbed my wrist and pulled me back. I lost my footing and he let go.” She turned her face away from him.
He reached his other hand out and gently pulled it back. “You don’t have to finish.” He could piece two and two together. There was scar on her leg and she never talked about it. He knew without her saying it was from the fall.
She nodded and leaned forward pressing her lips to his. It was a hesitant kiss, it reminded him of the first time she went to kiss him goodbye in his office. It was unsure, as if he wouldn’t welcome it. He pressed back deepening the kiss.
Alexandra pulled back but maintain eye contact with him. “I fell. I managed to walk away with only a few cuts and a lot of bruises. He ran. Someone coming in the building heard the commotion and found me. I didn’t go to the police or the ER and he stayed far away from me after that.”
She was silent for a moment looking into Ethan’s eyes. She saw no judgment reflected in them. “When I saw him this evening I just froze. I wasn’t so afraid of him, more that I was worried you and him would cross paths. I never told you about what happen because I rather just forget it. Part of me also felt like you were already lowering your standards for an intern at the time, what would you think when you found out about him.”
“My love, you are my equal. I might have been your boss but outside of the hospital I didn’t view as some young dumb person.”
“I know. It’s stupid now.”
“It’s not stupid. I’m just sorry you felt like that.” He took her face in his hands. “I love you Alexandra Ramsey with everything that I am. I’m happy because you have made me happy. You fill avoid that was missing in my life. Every day that I wake up next to you, I feel like I’ve won the lottery. I wouldn’t trade you for anything or anyone. If someone ever tried to take you away from me, I would fight to my death for you.”
She blinked causing new tears to fall before reaching out for him. He met her halfway. Their lips crashing together. It was a frantic kiss and Ethan needed to be closer to her. He needed to show her how much he loved her. He got off his knees into a crouching position. His hands ran up her sides before lifting to her to her feet as he stood.
Alexandra backed against the wall pulling him with her. His hands were at her sides, his finger tips gently pressing into her as their mouths moved against each other in sloppy kisses. He pressed his body against hers, reminding her he still had clothes on. Her hands that were holding on to his shoulders, slid down his chest.
Ethan’s lip pulled away from hers and kissed his way to her neck. She undid the button and zipper on his dress pants pushing his boxers and pants down. He kicked them to side and she wrapped her hand around him.
“Alexandra.” He groaned in her ear. His breathing became heavy as she pumped her hand up and down. “I need you.” His hands dropped to the back of her thighs and hauled her up. Her arms wrapped around his neck and her legs around his waist.
He managed to hold her up and slip into her. She bit lightly at his neck as he rocked into her. He mumbled he loved her over and over.
“Ethan!” She cried out his name as she got closer to her peak. Her fingernails dug into his back.
The pain from her nails reminded him that they were real and together. He picked up pace holding her up with one arm as his other hand found it’s way between them.
Alexandra held his face between her hands kissing him hard as she came around him. Her climax pushed him over the edge.
Later Ethan held her close to him as they lay in bed. She was snuggled into his side with her arm securely around him. Her breathing was starting to even out.
“I love you Ethan.” She said sleepily. “I forgot refill my birth control last week.”
He grinned stupidly into her hair. “That’s okay. I love you too.”
