Small art dump!

Started doodling Sunny during school and then it evolved (though the suggestions of my friend) into Sunny the Disney Princess

He’s very well suited for the roll, imo!

That same friend also dared to draw Sun or Moon in a suit, so that’s where dapper Moon came from

Last one’s just a few doodles a did a few days ago that I liked! (Angry sun is so fun to draw help-)

Can I ask you what program do you use for the animatic? And can you recommend any good program for practice? (I never used any of these programs, and they look pretty hard, so I don't want to pay yet for one, but I want to make something :c)

Hello! This might be a bit long but I hope I can help you with this (I'm holding your hand because this is also my first time doing an animatic so I have no idea on what kind of good pipeline there is to follow...) I apologize in advance if this won't be the most helpful answer :,))

okay so for the software. I use the ipad for most of my work nowadays... unfortunately, both apps that I use are paid—RoughAnimator and Procreate. I'll walk you down with how I do it. It is not the most efficient way but here's how it goes for me... :,))

Storyboard

I think the most important thing for planning something like this is having a clear vision of what you want to see. I started this animatic by brainstorming in my storyboards what I want to see in timing with the song and its lyrics. Here's an example of what I previously shared... [disclaimer: I did not follow the template so yeah, feel free to ignore the kanji characters]

you can see the outline I roughly made to tell myself what scene I want to show to what lyrics (I got lazy to write the whole lyrics down lol) and also added some notes like the movement of the character and camera pans etc.

Drawing the Cuts

All of the drawings are done on Procreate. I use this software for most of my drawings now, mostly because I like the texture of the brushes there. At this point, I am not worrying about timing these drawings to the music yet but I am reassured since I already made my guide of that in the storyboards. Procreate also has an animation feature that helped me draw the breathing sequence.

Compiling and Timing the Drawings

Once I've saved my drawings to my photos, I move them to RoughAnimator. Here is where I time the drawings with the song. What I like about RoughAnimator is that it has its own drawing tools (I don't really like the brushes tho... hence, me using Procreate instead), it has a camera tool that allows me to pan across my drawings and also shows the sound wave thingy of the song that helps me with timing. It also allows me to easily adjust the exposure or how long a drawing flashes on the screen at my chosen framerate.

I would sometimes be unsatisfied with my initial drawings, leading to me going back and forth between Procreate and RoughAnimator to revise stuff. (which in my opinion is not efficient but I can't really think of any other way to do this...)

So yes. That's pretty much how I'm working with it so far. I am currently stuck because both Procreate and RoughAnimator have very limited features when it comes to panning images... I'm still figuring out how to do that but I'm thinking of moving to video editors for these kinds of stuff instead of relying on RoughAnimator...

I hope you aren't discouraged by this,, I know it isn't the best solution... If you are to follow this kind of workflow, I think a good combination of any drawing software (hopefully with an animation feature) and a reliable video editor to time it to the music (I recommend finding ones with camera pan and motion tween features) is sufficient enough for this.

If you're using an ipad like me, iArtbook is a good free alternative to Procreate with a good animation feature. I have yet to check it out properly but Filmora or Capcut might be a good video editor... If you're using a desktop, I think Krita is good for drawing and animating!

I'm so sorry again if this wasn't really helpful. I will definitely share it if I were to find a better workflow for this. If you'd like to have some storyboard templates, here are some I found on the internet!

Oh FUCK dude i did not see this i’m so fucking sorry this is so late 😭 damn you, tumblr, for not fucking notifying me!! Anyway buckle up this is gonna be much longer than you asked for <3

Honestly ive kinda been drawing all my life! I hope that doesnt sound dumb cuz obviously almost everyone drew pictures when they were kids, but i know that it’s been a consistent hobby for me since i was little. By the time i was in 3rd grade I was hoarding notebooks to draw in. Cuz that’s something fun about me: i had a real huge habit of drawing in things that werent sketchbooks. Through middle school and beyond I did buy/receive sketchbooks, but I started out with various kinds of notebooks. One I had from like 2nd grade was like a hardcover, stationary-type notebook that I drew cats in lol, and I have 2 velvet lisa frank notebooks from 3rd grade. In high school and college I had a really bad habit of drawing in the margins on my notes and on handouts the teacher/professor would give. Those classes where the prof just prints out all the notes beforehand and gives them to you to follow along? Oh man, I spent so many classes barely listening while I drew on them! I also used to draw on my physics homework and tests and sometimes I even got extra credit for them (thank you jeff :D). I actually have a folder of various drawings I’ve kept from that 8yr time period and a lot of them are on classwork 😂

Obviously, I’ve been doing a lot of digital art lately, which I’m sure is what u were more curious about rather than the shit about drawing on my homework. I got a surface pro as a graduation gift in 2016 bc prior to that i had a wacom tablet and a janky ass laptop, so the gift was kinda a 2-in-1: i can do schoolwork AND art easily! i like digital art a lot and honestly im still learning new things abt it every time i draw. I use Leonardo currently (i’ll skip that story) but I started out doing digital art on sketchfu WITHOUT the wacom tablet in maaaaybe 2012??? 2011??? does anyone on this site remember sketchfu? Honestly couldnt even tell u how i found that site hahah the internet was just full of wonders back in the day. RIP sketchfu. Once i got the tablet tho some time later i used sketchfu still (i think) but also gimp and krita i believe.

Oh i suppose I should mention that i took art all four years of highschool and also minored in it in college! So it’s something i did academically as well as for fun. I keep thinking about going to art school for realsies but idk. I’m already $$$ in debt from my first degree i dont feel like adding to that 😅😓

Ok now for the second part of your question: I’ve also pretty much always done fan art! Ive never really been one for OC’s, EXCEPT for the self-insert superhero double life “comics” i wrote about a poodle named Sassy when i was in third grade. And then the knock off “comics” i wrote at a later time which honestly it was weird that i did a knock off of my own thing rather than just adding them to the original or making it a spin off with at least one of the og characters. Cuz it wasnt a spin off!! But anyway there wasnt really much to any of these characters; i just needed vessels to get my weird ideas out.

So anyway yeah most of what ive ever drawn has been fan art or self portraits, because its just easier for me to take characters that already exist and bend them to my will (artistically). Well excluding art assignments in school i guess because i would usually have to draw something specific and therefore not something self indulgent. But yeah ive drawn for lots of fandoms like the earliest i remember is warrior cats. Then theres things like pokemon and warriors and random other books i read thru middle school (i used to read a LOT but now im practically illiterate); spn, sherlock, and marvel through high school; and then marvel and bttf thru the end of hs and beyond. Idk i also have always loved looking at other peoples fan art and so im like “shit i wanna do that too!”. Tho i will say marvel was my biggest fandom and the one i had the longest interest in, so that was probably where the passion REALLY came from cuz I was drawing marvel stuff for such a long time (tho not posting shdjsk u have to trust me), but ive been doing fan art forever :)

(Of course, a lot of the fan art i was making prior to recently was drawn in lined notebooks or on homework sheets or what have you, and I wasn’t posting really any of it, but i was still making it and a good chunk of it still exists. Oh i should also mention most of it was with pencils or ballpoint pens like i wasnt doing anything too fancy. There was some digital art in the highschool-college time frame but it also really wasnt…much. Honestly i barely posted any of it here but I know some of it’s on deviantart)

I cant pinpoint the exact time I started getting more “serious” about my art in general, but i know the first pandemic lockdown gave me more free time and i was less stressed about schoolwork so i just kinda had a good outlet. (Tho i will say that prior, I had been in a life drawing club for a short while, and i had also been working on a personal sketchbook project that had me pretty ~inspired~ to do art. Also i watched twin peaks around this time and it inspired a lot of Feelings and i was making funky collages and other art pieced that were sometimes related to that. Some of those are on deviantart)

Honestly I think the Big thing with my digital art was coincidentally getting back into BTTF the summer of the 35th anniversary bc the fandom here was THRIVING and i was like “oh shit wait i want to contribute!” But as i kept drawing i kept wanting to improve and that leads us to right now where im constantly trying new things (whether subtle or obvious) and challenging myself to do full body drawings with different poses, and doing screencap redraws and what have you for various reasons (backgrounds, proportions, pose, etc)

So yeah :) Basically I’ve been doing fan art forever (I didnt even get into all the mediums ive tried but that’s another conversation bc this is already so long and convoluted) and it’s kinda coincidental that ive suddenly really gotten back into it and have improved dramatically in such a short time. finished my 7 seeds reread, up to the very last chapter (luckily including the side stories, bless the translator lisahey! whoever you are and wherever you are)<3 

(i’m so excited for the anime coming in june! hope it’ll do justice to the series!) read more cos i have a looooooot to say.

overall, wow. what a brilliant story. i cried so much (again, this is about my who knows what number reread, but this is the first time i read it all through like this in a couple of days with everything still fresh in my mind). the poetic yet miraculous weaving of fate throughout the story is always so well put together and is so beautifully done (even if it gets overused a little). her storytelling never fails to bring tears to my eyes.

i’m always awed at how she juggles so many characters’ stories and makes *every* last one intriguing, while keeping characters (mostly) marvelously three dimensional. the wide range of personality types, and how those types deal with things in their own ways, and how they grow...she nails them. the characters really become human to the reader. 

i’d say a problem was hana becoming an almost exhausting, flat character at some point because of how often the story revolved around her. tamura tends to fail when she places a character on a pedestal, and it’s painfully noticeable. despite all that, i do like hana! hana and arashi’s reuniting was me sighing out for them, lol- ahhhh, finally. the scene with them in black hugging on the hill was so cute, and the pages with their expressions changing too.

i really enjoyed the parts where the characters were stuck under sado and conversed through the machinery; tamura did a very good job of making sure we know nothing is black and white when it comes to people, and arashi’s struggle when it comes to ango was obvious in displaying that. i wish we had seen ango and arashi talk a little in the side stories. it was moving to hear how arashi, natsu, and semimaru stuck up for him (my favorite and BEST trio!) while also condemning his actions to help him realize himself.

i LOVE natsu/semimaru. my babies. my cinnamon apples. my adorable awkward couple. and NATSU! i was so proud of natsu, she grows so much! what a girl<3 she was a gem of a character. the GROWTH. i also really liked haru/koruri, the way they met was so cute. ayu and aramaki matched so well too (lol at ayu telling tsunomata he was a second candidate to have kids with)

hotaru and hibari were adorable. i love hibari, lol. her and hotaru’s dynamic reminds me of me and my sister’s. tamura does the family jealousies/feelings great although she hardly touched on them :-( 

maria’s ending and character were so touching. i love how tamura writes the women. all of them are amazing! kurumi, fujiko, chisa, nijiko, etc. all the women are so different and so so strong in their own ways. the giving birth chapter made me cry, oh the wonder that is a mother...

aramaki and ango’s backstory were definitely the ones that hurt my heart the MOST, i never cried so much in my life i swear. tamura was intent on making them suffer honestly...LOL...like their lives hadn’t been bad enough

i can’t say i agree with how ango was dealt with... his whole story is incredibly painful and until the end, i truly think i cried the most over his scenes because they were so heartbreaking. i honestly think it was a mistake on tamura yumi’s part to make one of his actions almost r*ping hana, it came out of nowhere imo. he was power hungry and spiralling into insanity sure, but i feel as if tamura used it as leverage to make hana the flawless, suffering heroine *unnecessarily*, and ango the outcast to the end (which i get that he deserved, understood and grew from, which was good). to me, ango’s sin of killing the innocent izayoi should have been enough without pulling hana into it to become an outcast. did the murder of an innocent soul mean nothing to tamura...

that and especially the romance drama was too much. hana’s crush on aramaki was useless.........yumi wrote aramaki’s reasons well though. haru’s crush on hana, again, useless....oran was set up with krita or whatever for what. ryo and matsuri, again unnecessary and made the characters flat. i believe ryo had the potential to bounce back on his own, he was a very strong character. matsuri was a lovely character, i love her SO much, but tamura just used her crush on ryo to expose her as a character (which is totally fine, but not when another character’s writing suffers because of it) there’s more i can’t think of just shoved in there lol- oh, ban and fujiko, gengoro and akane, chisa and akio (found em cute though). i’m glad it wasn’t expanded on because god tamura it’s not NEEDED

i think the basic problem was that tamura felt she had to use romantic love/an other as something to change a person, which is never the case imo- a person can help you change, but at the end of the day, you are the one who commits to the action of change because you allowed your belief system to change.

chimaki’s backstory came out at the end, so that tamura could make me cry one last time, damn it. tsunomata’s backstory made me cryyyyyy. i wish we saw him be able to thaw the capsule containing his kid...i guess tamura thought releasing 145 babies would be too much to add in hahahah

i love botan: a sentence of its own because i love her THAT much!

there were obviously questionable things in the course of reading, like how are their backpacks, clothes, knives etc lasting out over around 9 months but it’s fine i guess.....................

the artstyle grew on me for sure, it becomes almost charming. i love how she tones her blacks out with whites on the edges, and how she draws tears is particularly charming to me even if it doesn’t make sense hahaha. tones being blurred out to make a white pulsation is a staple in shoujos, but in 7 seeds it’s magical to me lol. she’s very skilled at using her drawings to tell a story. i super love how she draws water/people diving into water with tendrils of bubbles floating around them. 

i have more to say spinning around in my head, but here’s a rough spewing of my thoughts for now~ if anyone wants to talk 7 seeds with me pleaseeee doooo haha
