Please let me know if you like these shorter blurbs :)

✧.* — TOJI FUSHIGURO — ✧.*
You glanced at Toji as he steered the car down the quiet, tree-lined street. The low hum of the engine was the only sound between you two, but that familiar weight of his presence filled the silence. He always carried himself with an easy confidence, a kind of quiet power that made him stand out without even trying.
“You don’t have to look so annoyed,” you teased, catching the subtle furrow in his brow as he pulled into Jinichi’s driveway.
Toji didn’t say anything at first, just smirked and glanced sideways at you. “I’m not annoyed,” he grumbled, though the slight tilt of his mouth said otherwise. “Just not exactly in the mood for the family dinner crap.”
You rolled your eyes.
Classic Toji.
“Be nice. It’s just dinner. You’re not walking into a fight,” you reminded him with a soft laugh, unbuckling your seatbelt. “And you know exactly how much your nephew adores you.”
That earned you a low chuckle as he cut the engine and slouched back in his seat.
“Kid's got good taste. I’m the only fun one ‘round here.”
You both stepped out of the car and as you made your way up the driveway, the front door swung open.
Your brother-in-law, Jinichi, stood there, smiling at you both, but barely had the chance to greet you before the sound of hurried footsteps followed behind him.
“Toji-ojisan!”
A small, dark-haired blur darted past Jinichi and straight toward Toji. Before you could blink, Toji’s nephew had attached himself to his leg, looking up with wide eyes.
“Uncle Toji! You came! Are you gonna tell me more stories about when you were younger?”
Toji raised an eyebrow, smirking down at the kid, then cast a sidelong glance at you.
“See? Told you. I’m the fun one.”
You shook your head, trying to suppress a smile as Toji crouched down to ruffle his nephew’s hair.
“Yeah, yeah. Don’t get too full of yourself.”
“Already am,” he replied, deadpan, before turning his full attention to the kid.
“What’s up, brat? You been behaving?”
The little boy nodded enthusiastically, practically bouncing on his toes.
“Yep! I’ve been practicing just like you told me. Can we go to the backyard later? You gotta see my new moves!”
Toji stood back up, arms crossed as he exchanged a quick glance with Jinichi, who gave a knowing grin.
There was an unspoken fondness between them, though Jinichi didn’t say anything, just stepping aside to let you in.
Inside, the house was warm and inviting, the scent of homemade food already filling the air. You noticed Toji’s posture relax—just a bit—as you made your way to the living room.
His nephew stuck to his side like glue, constantly asking about everything from Toji’s workout routine to his old school stories.
Toji answered in his usual blunt way, never indulging the kid too much, but just enough to keep him hooked.
After dinner, you found yourself sitting outside on the back patio, watching Toji and his nephew go over some silly mock sparring moves.
The boy had his fists up, trying to mimic Toji’s stance, all while Toji lazily dodged the punches, not bothering to hide the amusement in his eyes.
You leaned back in your chair, and for a moment, it was like your heart swelled in your chest—three sizes too big, you thought with a smile.
It was impossible not to feel that warmth as you watched Toji with his nephew, his tough exterior softened just a bit in these moments.
He’d never admit it, but seeing him like this, in his own way, playing the doting uncle…it made you melt.
You could see it in the way his nephew looked at him, hanging onto his every word. And the way Toji engaged—aloof but present—it warmed something deep inside you.
“You’re such a softie, you know that?” you called out, your voice teasing but laced with affection.
Toji turned, still holding up a lazy guard, eyes narrowing playfully. “Yeah? How d’you figure?”
You gave him a knowing grin, folding your arms. “Look at you—out here entertaining him like you don’t enjoy it. Don’t act like you don’t love being the ‘cool uncle.’”
He straightened up, brushing his hands through his hair as he cast a quick glance at his nephew—who was too busy practicing his “new moves” on a nearby tree—to respond.
Then, with a smirk that made your heart skip a beat, he stepped toward you. “Maybe I am a softie,” he started, voice low, “but only for you.”
You blinked, a playful roll of your eyes as you went to respond—
“Though, I’ll tell ya, there’s somethin’ I’m neverr soft for...”
It took you all of two seconds to realize where he was going, but before he could finish the joke, you flicked him right in the forehead.
“Toji!” You scolded, laughing despite yourself.
He grinned, all too pleased with himself, as he rubbed his forehead.
“What? You’re the one who brought it up, sweetheart.”
“You’re awful,” you said, shaking your head, though the warmth in your chest remained. You could never stay mad at him, especially not when he was like this—so smug, so sure of himself.
“And to think I almost thought you were sweet for a second.”
He leaned down, one hand coming to rest on the arm of your chair as he hovered over you, that familiar smirk tugging at his lips.
“Almost, huh?”
You flicked his forehead again, but softer this time. “Don’t push your luck.”
He chuckled, leaning back and crossing his arms as he glanced toward his nephew, still occupied in his makeshift sparring match with the tree.
“Brat’s got a lot to learn,” he muttered, but you could hear the fondness there, the warmth beneath his tough exterior.
“Kid might be cooler than me one day.”
You smiled, shaking your head as you watched the two of them together.
“Not possible,” you said softly, though Toji didn’t hear it—or pretended not to.
Either way, in that moment, your heart was full. This was your life, and honestly? You wouldn’t have it any other way.
✧.* — GOJO SATORU — ✧.*
Gojo’s fingers tapped rhythmically against the steering wheel as he hummed along to the radio, sunglasses perched—needlessly—on his nose despite the fact it was well after sunset.
You shot him a side-eye.
“You do realize we’re just going to Shoko’s for dinner, right? You’re acting like you’re about to perform on stage.”
He grinned, his lips pulling into that signature cocky smile.
“Aren’t I always the main attraction, though? Especially tonight. Her kid adores me.”
You snorted. “Yeah, because you let him climb all over you like a jungle gym.”
“Hey, I’m just providing the fun. I can’t help that I’m a natural favourite,” he quipped, glancing at you for emphasis before focusing back on the road.
“You say that like it’s a talent,” you teased, though the warmth in your chest grew as you thought about it.
It was hard not to love Gojo when he was like this—carefree, playful, and so naturally magnetic, especially around kids.
By the time you pulled up to Shoko’s house, you could already hear the muffled sound of laughter and conversation.
The front door creaked open before either of you could knock, and Shoko’s five-year-old son burst out, arms outstretched, ready to greet his hero.
“Gojo-nii!” The kid’s excitement was so pure, it was contagious.
Gojo’s grin only widened, and he crouched down to scoop him up in one smooth motion.
“Hey, champ! Been keeping things under control at this house? Your mom can be a handful…”
The boy giggled as Gojo swung him around effortlessly, his small hands gripping the fabric of Gojo’s coat.
You stood back for a moment, hand still resting on the open passenger door, with a growing smile on your face.
Gojo’s childlike energy matched the kid’s perfectly, and it never failed to make your heart melt.
“He’s been waiting for you all day,” Shoko called from the hallway, rolling her eyes as she stepped into view.
“Good luck tearing him away from you tonight.”
Gojo set the kid down with a dramatic flair, straightening up and shooting a playful wink at you.
“What can I say? I’ve got that irresistible charm.”
“Careful, your ego’s showing again,” you quipped, nudging him as you all walked into the house.
As Gojo and the boy ran off to “catch up”—which likely meant some sort of wild chase through the living room—you found yourself watching from the kitchen doorway, arms crossed and heart swelling.
It always surprised you how soft Gojo could be, especially around kids.
His usual swagger and bravado were still there, but he had a way of connecting with them that was genuinely sweet. It made your heart skip in ways you had never expected.
You smiled to yourself, shaking your head slightly as you watched Gojo give the kid a piggyback ride, the room filled with their laughter.
Shoko came up beside you, handing you a glass of wine.
“Never thought I’d see the day where Satoru Gojo is someone’s favorite jungle gym,” she commented dryly, taking a sip from her own glass.
You laughed softly, nodding. “Yeah, it’s weird, right? But he loves it.”
Shoko gave you a knowing look. “Does he? Or does he just love being adored?”
You grinned, letting out a short laugh before responding.
“Both. Definitely both.”
Later, after dinner, Gojo had somehow convinced the boy to show him every toy he owned, and you found yourself watching them again, heart swelling even more.
You didn’t know how, but every time Gojo was around that kid, you swore your heart was overwhelmed with admiration.
“You’re good with him, you know,” you said softly as you sidled up next to Gojo, who was sitting cross-legged on the floor, helping the boy assemble a toy robot. “It’s almost like you… enjoy this.”
Gojo raised an eyebrow, feigning offence. “Enjoy? What are you trying to say, love? You think I’m not the paternal type?”
You smirked, leaning down to whisper, “I think you love it, actually...”
Gojo leaned back slightly, crossing his arms and giving you a playful look. “Oh, I love a lot of things,” he said smoothly, lowering his voice.
“And most of them are when we’re not around a five-year-old.”
You blinked, realizing the meaning behind his words, and lightly smacked him at the back of his head. “Satoru!”
“Ow!” He pouted, rubbing the back of his head. “What? I’m just being honest.”
You rolled your eyes, fighting back a grin. “You’re the worst.”
“Actually…I’m the best,” he corrected with a wink, as the kid ran back to Gojo’s side, completely oblivious to the innuendo.
Watching Gojo with that playful smile and the way he effortlessly entertained the kid—who was still tugging at his sleeve to show him yet another toy—made you feel an overwhelming sense of warmth.
Sure, Gojo could be an insufferable flirt, but seeing him like this, so naturally connected and full of energy, reminded you why you loved him so much.
Even when he was being a ridiculous show-off, he had a way of making your heart burst with affection.
“Okay, okay,” you said, shaking your head fondly.
“Let’s see if you can at least try to behave yourself the rest of the night.”
Gojo stood up, stretching dramatically, and then leaned down to kiss your forehead.
“No promises. You know me—I always aim to please.”
You smacked him again, this time softer, as he flashed that signature grin of his and turned his attention back to Shoko’s son, who was already planning his next adventure with his “cool uncle.”
✧.* — NANAMI KENTO — ✧.*
The evening sky was beginning to blush with hues of orange and pink as you and Nanami made your way to your sister's house.
The quiet hum of the car and the familiar scent of Nanami’s cologne made the drive feel calm, though you couldn’t help the tiny flutter of excitement in your stomach.
Family dinners were always nice, but this time there was a little extra something—your niece loved Nanami.
“I think she loves you more than she loves me,” you said playfully, turning to glance at your husband as he kept his eyes focused on the road.
Nanami’s lips twitched into the smallest of smiles.
“Hardly. She just appreciates that I bring her books.”
“Books, toys, puzzles, snacks—don’t act like you haven’t been spoiling her.” You teased, gently nudging his arm.
He gave a small, almost imperceptible shrug, but you could see the way his eyes softened.
“I just want to make sure she’s happy.”
You grinned.
It was the kind of answer you'd expect from Nanami—thoughtful, selfless, and with an unspoken affection that melted your heart every time.
It was hard to imagine anyone not loving him, really.
As you pulled up in front of your sister’s house, you didn’t even have a chance to step out of the car before the front door swung open.
Your niece, a whirlwind of energy with messy pigtails and a huge smile, came racing down the path.
“Uncle Kento!” she squealed, her little feet pounding against the pavement as she made a beeline for Nanami.
He stepped out of the car just in time for her to throw her arms around his legs, hugging him tightly. Nanami looked slightly startled but quickly softened, crouching down to her level. “Hello, sweetheart.”
Her face lit up at his greeting, and she quickly started tugging him towards the house.
“Come on! I have to show you my new dollhouse! You’re going to love it!”
You watched them from a few steps behind, heart warming at the sight. Nanami—who always seemed so composed and serious—was completely wrapped around your niece’s tiny finger. It was an endearing contrast, watching the usually stoic man willingly get pulled into a child’s world of excitement and play.
By the time you reached the front door, your niece had already dragged Nanami inside, babbling non-stop about the dollhouse, the latest puzzle he bought her, and a new storybook she wanted him to read later.
You exchanged a smile with your sister, who had appeared in the doorway, laughing as she watched her daughter commandeer Nanami's attention.
“He’s got the magic touch with kids, huh?” Your sister remarked, raising an eyebrow at you.
You chuckled, stepping inside. “She loves him. I think she’s ready to keep him all to herself.”
“Good luck getting him back,” she teased, giving you a playful nudge as you both headed into the living room.
Dinner was filled with easy conversation, laughter, and your niece proudly showing Nanami everything she could think of—her new school projects, her favorite toys, and even a drawing she had made “just for him.”
He listened attentively, offering genuine praise, his voice calm but warm in a way that made it clear he wasn’t just humoring her. He cared.
You found yourself watching the two of them, your heart swelling with each small interaction.
It was impossible not to smile, seeing Nanami, the man who rarely let himself relax, so at ease around your niece.
Nanami had just finished reading her a bedtime story, and now she was fast asleep, curled up under the blankets with her favorite stuffed toy.
“She’s asleep,” he murmured softly, his hand brushing your niece’s hair away from her face.
You stepped forward, quietly gathering the blankets to tuck her in. “You’re really good with her, you know?”
He glanced at you, a faint smile on his lips. “I try.”
“No, really,” you said, leaning in to press a soft kiss to his cheek. “She loves you. You’re her favorite.”
Nanami’s eyes softened at your words, but he didn’t say much more, his hand lingering on your niece’s small form for a moment longer before standing up.
The two of you quietly exited the room, letting her sleep in peace.
After saying your goodbyes to your sister and thanking her for dinner, you both made your way out to the car.
The night air was cool, and the streets were quiet as Nanami opened the passenger door for you, his hand resting briefly at the small of your back as you slid into the seat.
The drive home was calm, with the rhythmic sound of the tires against the road creating a peaceful background hum. You glanced out the window, watching the city lights blur into soft orbs as they passed by.
Nanami was silent beside you, his hands steady on the wheel. There was something thoughtful in the way he held himself, a quiet contemplation that you could sense even without looking at him.
After a few minutes, he finally spoke.
“You know, I’ve been thinking…” You tilted your head, curiosity piqued by the sudden weight in his voice.
Nanami hesitated for a moment, his thumb tapping lightly on the steering wheel before reaching over to rest on your thigh.
“Of what I want,” he said, his voice a little quieter. “Of what we could have.”
Your heart skipped a beat at the implication behind his words, and you turned to face him fully, sensing where this was going.
“Kento…” You began softly.
“I’ve been thinking about it,” he continued, his gaze fixed ahead on the road.
“For a while now, actually.”
Your breath caught in your throat, and you could feel your pulse quicken as the meaning behind his words settled in. He wasn’t just talking about your niece anymore.
“You’re talking about…” you trailed off, your voice barely above a whisper.
“A family,” he finished for you, his tone gentle but certain. “I want us to have a baby.”
For a moment, you just sat there.
You had always known that Nanami cared deeply, that he was serious about your future together, but hearing him say it like this, so plainly, so sincerely—it was something else entirely.
“You want a baby?” You repeated softly, your heart swelling with a mix of emotions.
He nodded, his eyes still focused on the road but softening as he spoke.
“Yes. I want to start a family with you. I’ve been thinking about it for some time, but… I didn’t want to pressure you.”
You reached over, gently placing your hand on top of his where it rested on your leg.
“You’re not pressuring me, Kento. I…” You took a deep breath, gathering your thoughts.
“I want that too. With you. More than anything.”
When you finally pulled up to your home, Nanami turned off the engine and sat there for a moment, the faint glow of the streetlights illuminating his thoughtful expression.
He turned to you, reaching out to cup your cheek gently, his thumb brushing over your skin in a way that made your heart skip.
“I mean it,” he murmured. “Whenever you’re ready. We’ll do this together.”
You leaned into his touch, your eyes meeting his with a warmth and certainty you hadn’t felt in a long time.
“Well…I am ready now...” You said with a playful tone.
He smiled then—small, soft, and full of love—and leaned in to press a tender kiss to your lips, sealing the quiet promise you had both made tonight.
“Well then lets get inside.”
✧.* — SUGURU GETO — ✧.*
It was a peaceful evening, and the low hum of conversation filled the room, accompanied by the occasional clatter of building blocks. You sat cross-legged on the couch, watching as Suguru helped Utahime's son with his tower-building endeavor.
The little boy was fully engaged, eyes bright with excitement as Suguru gently guided his small hands to balance each block perfectly.
“Higher, Sugu! Make it taller!” the boy giggled, his enthusiasm filling the room with an infectious joy.
Suguru chuckled softly, his deep voice filled with warmth.
“Careful, we don’t want it to fall,” he murmured, adding another block to the structure with a steady hand.
His long fingers made the task look effortless, and the boy watched in awe.
You leaned back against the couch cushions, the sight of Suguru interacting with the child making your heart swell.
There was something about seeing him like this—patient, soft-spoken, so full of care. It was a side of him that you loved deeply, and it reminded you just how much of a natural he was with kids.
“You’re really good with him,” you commented, your voice a little more tender than usual as you admired the scene before you.
Suguru glanced over at you, the corners of his mouth lifting in a faint smile.
“He’s easy to please,” he said, turning his attention back to the boy, who was now clapping his hands excitedly as the tower grew taller.
“Still,” you said, watching the way the boy leaned into Suguru, clearly adoring him, “he’s obsessed with you. I’ve never seen him so attached.”
Suguru smirked, a playful glint in his eyes.
“What can I say? I’m just irresistible.”
You rolled your eyes at that, but your heart warmed anyway.
“Sure, sure. Let’s just hope you don’t break his heart when we leave.”
The boy turned to you, his face lighting up with joy. “Sugu is so cool, y/n! He’s gonna help me with my blocks forever!”
You chuckled, brushing a hand through your hair as you watched Suguru pretend to be serious.
“Forever, huh? That’s a long time, buddy.”
Suguru leaned down, lowering his voice conspiratorially as if sharing a secret with the boy.
“I don’t mind,” he whispered, his tone teasing. “As long as I get to build the biggest towers.”
The boy giggled, his eyes sparkling as he nodded enthusiastically. You couldn’t help but smile at the sight—it was moments like this that made your heart grow three sizes.
You leaned forward, nudging Suguru’s shoulder lightly.
“Admit it, you’re loving this.”
Suguru’s dark eyes flickered with amusement as he glanced at you, a playful smile tugging at his lips. “Of course! What’s not to love?”
Before you could respond, the familiar sound of keys jingling outside the door caught your attention.
You glanced at the clock—it was just about time for Utahime to be home.
The front door creaked open, and Utahime stepped inside, looking a little worn out but smiling when she saw the scene in front of her.
“Looks like I missed all the fun,” she said, her voice carrying a mix of relief and gratitude as she took in the sight of her son sitting on the floor, still glued to Suguru’s side.
“Mama!” The boy immediately jumped up, running toward her with open arms. Utahime knelt down, scooping him up with a tired but happy sigh.
“Hey, sweetheart,” she murmured, kissing the top of his head. “Were you good for Suguru and y/n?”
“He was an angel,” you replied with a smile, standing up from the couch. “Though, I think Suguru’s the real hero tonight.”
Utahime chuckled, glancing at Suguru with an appreciative smile.
“I don’t doubt it. Thanks for watching him—both of you. I owe you one.”
Suguru waved her off, standing up and stretching his arms.
“No need. He’s a fun kid. We built the tallest tower yet.”
The boy wiggled in Utahime’s arms, looking up at her excitedly.
“Mama, it was so tall! Sugu’s the best!”
Utahime smiled down at him, her eyes softening. “I’m glad you had fun, sweetie. Let’s get you ready for bed, okay?”
As Utahime carried her son off to his room, you turned to Suguru, your hand finding his arm as you gave him a gentle squeeze.
“You were great with him tonight,” you said softly, your eyes full of affection.
Suguru gave you a warm smile, leaning down to press a soft kiss to your temple.
“I had fun,” he murmured. “But we should probably head out.”
You nodded, glancing around the apartment to make sure everything was in order. After a few minutes, Utahime returned, looking more relaxed now that her son was settled.
“Thanks again, guys,” she said, walking you both to the door. “I’ll definitely owe you one for this.”
“Anytime,” you replied with a smile, giving her a quick hug before stepping out into the cool evening air.
As you and Suguru made your way to his bike, you couldn’t help but feel a sense of contentment settle over you. There was something peaceful about nights like this—watching Suguru be so gentle and kind, seeing how naturally he fit into the role of caretaker.
It stirred something warm and familiar deep within you.
Once you both stepped outside into the cool evening air, Suguru glanced at you with a smirk.
“You know,” he started, his tone laced with that unmistakable teasing charm, “playing with Utahime’s kid is fun and all, but…” He paused, raising an eyebrow as he reached for your hand. “I was thinking we should get home and get to some 'baby-making' ourselves… if you know what I mean.”
Heat instantly bloomed in your cheeks as you laughed, nudging him in the ribs. “Suguru!”
But before you could respond properly, Suguru swept you off your feet with ease, lifting you into his arms.
“What? It’s a solid plan, plus you're the one who kept saying I'm just sooo good with kids.” He grinned, peppering your face with soft kisses as he carried you toward his motorcycle.
“Put me down!” You laughed, but your protests were playful as Suguru’s kisses continued, light and affectionate, his breath warm against your skin.
“You love it,” he murmured between kisses, making you giggle even more.
With one final press of his lips to your forehead, Suguru set you down beside his motorcycle, the playful glint in his eyes still there.
“Now, let’s get home,” he said, sliding onto the bike and passing you your helmet. “We’ve got some important work to do.”
You rolled your eyes, still smiling as you climbed onto the bike behind him, wrapping your arms around his waist.
As the engine roared to life, you pressed your cheek against his back, feeling that same peaceful contentment wash over you once more.
And as you sped off into the night, the playful warmth of Suguru's teasing stayed with you, a reminder of just how lucky you were to have him by your side.

Lucifer x Virgin Reader - Loving One Night Stand (NSFW/Slight Angst)
This one is long so it’s going under the cut!
@citrusbatsandhoneybees has some banger ideas, I’ll tell ya; based on our chats
Lucifer appears in your room one night unexpectedly and unprompted
He tells you that he knows who you are and tells you that can have him in whatever way you desire
But he also tells you that he can only stay for the night; he is only allowed to be on Earth for a short time every 100 years
Usually he passes on the opportunity, but when he learned about you, he couldn’t but seize this moment with you, although fleeting
“It’s been a loooooong time since I’ve spoken with humans. But there’s something about you…I just had to know more…”
“What…what should we do?”
“That would be up to you. We can sit and talk, watch a movie, anything you want! But from what I know, I’ll venture a guess and say you want something different…”
You swallowed hard. “I-I do, but…I hope you know I feel more for you than just…that. And I’ve never…”
You can feel yourself start to tear up
“Hey, hey, it’s alright! We don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with! I’d never put you in the situation, I promise. And I know you mean what you say, I can tell.”
He grips your hands and smiles at you sweetly
All those nights you spent thinking about what you would do to this man, it drove you insane; but here he was, offering you exactly what you’ve yearned for all this time
“If we only have tonight…I want to make the most of it. I don’t want to be afraid anymore…”
“If that’s what you wish, then I’m yours. We’ll go at whatever pace you’re most comfortable with, alright? And if at any point it’s too much or you want to stop, promise me that you’ll tell me immediately.”
You nod before you lean in to kiss him for the first time
His lips are soft and desperate for more of you; he pulls away and chuckles softly
“I’ll admit, it’s…it’s been a while since I’ve kissed anyone like that. Let alone…n-never mind. Please, come back…”
He pulled in for another kiss, holding the back of your head ever so gently, his moans sending aches straight to your core.
You start to undress each other slowly and carefully before your nearly fully exposed in front of him as he hovers above you on the bed
"Fffuck...you...you're already so wet...I love that. No hon, don't be shy, I would never make fun of you. Never. It's adorable really. Are you ready? I'll start slow, just one finger to start, okay?”
He slowly inserts one finger inside of you, a small whimper escapes your throat
“That's it...that's a good girl...so cute...You make the most adorable sounds, dear. How do you feel? Are you still okay?”
“M-More, please…”
“O-Okay, I can do that..."
His fingers start thrusting in and out of you faster and faster before reaching for your aching clit
“Still with me? Good...now let me just rub riiigghhhttt here...there it is~ Oh love, the faces you're making, fuck...I can't get enough...you're doing so well~"
But it doesn’t take long before he’s pleading for more
“Sweetheart, I need...f-fuck...please, please can I taste you?”
“Y-Yes…”
“God, thank you...thank you so much! Promise I'll be gentle, just let me...m-mmmm mmmfffuuuckkk, ohmygod...darling y-you're absolutely divine...such a pretty pussy, love...so lovely, so beautiful...you're perfect...mmmmmm...mmhmmmh~"
With his expert tongue, it’s only a moment more before he has you cumming on his tongue
“You taste heavenly, my angel. I could stay between your thighs for the rest of my days and it wouldn’t be long enough.~”
In your lust fueled state, you decide to turn the tables
“Lucifer, I-I want to return the favor, if that’s okay…”
“What do you...oh...OH! Oh, no! You don't have to do that, hon! It's perfectly fine! You don't need to-
“But I want to…very much…”
“I...oh fuck me...love, I'm...it's fine, really! Oh, please don't look at me like that! That's cheating! Ughhhh, okay okay, fine, you win! You don't play fair.~”
You start slow, stroking his length carefully; his cock already leaking from your small touches alone
You decide to use your tongue to help clean him up
“Darling? W-What are you-OH FUCK ME…f-fuck, your tongue…HOLY F-FUCK! S-Slow down, hon! P-Please slow down…don’t hurt yourself…i-if you keep licking me like that, I’m g-gonna…fuckfuckfuck…”
“It’s okay, Lucifer, I want you to let go.~”
“F-Fuck, you’re going to be the death of me-GAAAHH SSHHHHIIIIIIT! Fuck, I’m gonna cum baby…gonna c-cum…your fault…a-all your fault…fuckfuckfuckfuckFUCK AAAAAHHH!”
Lucifer cums hard in your mouth, one hand gripping the bed sheets, the other tangled in your hair
You swallow his load happily without hesitation, giving him a satisfying hum
“That…that was amazing. You’re amazing! Thank you for that! I…geez, just incredible…”
He pulls you up to his face for a tender kiss before pulling you back onto the bed with him
”Do you…want to keep going? I’m more than happy if you’re not comfortable going any further.”
“Yes, I want to…fuck, please! I need you!”
“Okay…okayokayokay…f-fuck. We…we’ll go extremely slow, alright? If you’re in pain, if you want to stop at any point, please tell me immediately. You’re absolutely sure? Okay…then lay down for me, darling~”
You do as he says as he slots himself between your legs
“Deep breaths love, this…this might hurt a little bit. I’m going to everything I can to make it as painless as possible. You have to tell me if it’s too much, do you promise? Okay…I’m going to push in now, just a little bit…HNNGG…gghhh…fuck…Are you alright? I-Is is too much? Let me know when I can keep going…”
“I’m alright Luci, please keep going…”
“O-Okay, I’m going to push in a little more…O-Oh my God…love, you feel…so fucking good…you’re taking m-me so well.”
His hips start to thrust into you, slowly at first but he starts to falter fast, the feeling of being inside you overwhelming him
He leans down to kiss you passionately, swallowing every sound he pulls out of you as he fucks you tenderly
“I’m…shhhhiiiittt…I’m not gonna last much longer…I’m gonna…f-fuck…I can’t…”
“It’s okay, L-Lucifer, it’s okay, cum in me…I want you to f-fill me. Please Lucifer…”
With your permission, he cums with a loud cry, painting your walls white with his load
His orgasm triggers your own as you pulse around him, feeling utterly and completely full
He crashes on top of you, his breathing heavy and labored
“Thank you, love…thank you…”
You can feel more tears starting to form in your eyes
“Lucifer…”
“Shh, it’ll be alright, I promise. If I could stay, I would, please believe me.”
“I love you…”
He plants a tender kiss to your forehead as he wipes your tears away
“I love you too. Come here.”
He wraps his arms around you tightly, his wings appearing and spreading across you, covering you completely
“Rest now, love.”
It didn’t take too much longer for your eyes to grow heavy as he held you against his chest
It was the best night of sleep you ever had
You awoke late the next morning in a daze, wondering if last night was nothing more than a dream
Before you got out of bed, you noticed a small folded piece of paper laying on the pillow next to you
You picked it up and began to read the note
“Thank you for a wonderful night. It will be one I will never forget for as long as I live. If fate is kind, perhaps we will meet again in the next life. But I fear Hell will not be your final destination. I love you, for all time. Yours, Lucifer Morningstar”
You didn’t leave bed that day; you sobbed, praying that the next time you woke up, it would be next to him

A/N: So I threatened a while back to write MC arresting Sylus since he literally won’t shut up about it. Thought this would be a silly fic but it ended up an angst-driven exploration of how his time with MC is probably finite and ill-fated?? Anyway Sylus is too soft for this, I’m sorryyyy (Sy I love you! I would never do this to you! ‘Didn’t it come from your imagination, though?’ Ssshhhh you don’t know what you’re saying!! 🥰)
To Remain Silent
Sylus x Reader 🩸
Tumblr media
Summary: Sylus has told you to arrest him one too many times...
Genre: Emotional rollercoaster honestly? Some angst, some comfort (and a lil spice for flavour)
Warnings/Additional tags: gn!reader, vaguely established relationship, gets a little steamy at the end (mostly kissing tbh), artistic licence applied liberally since this would be WAY too risky for MC to actually attempt 😭😭

Sylus knows this isn’t real.
You watch him through the glass of his cell, and the subtle tint to it lets you know that he can’t watch you back. He’s sat on the single bench inside, leaning against the far wall, his long legs stretched out before him. His hands are cuffed— tucked away behind his back— but he still looks comfortable. More than comfortable: at ease. At home. Bored.
“You think I can’t feel those pretty little eyes of yours on me?” he mutters, head back, eyes closed. “I’m at your mercy, kitten. Are you really only going to look?”
You tap a button on the glass. “You should start taking this seriously.”
He smiles at the sound of your voice, but his eyes don’t open; there’s still nothing to see. “I’m taking it very seriously, sweetie.”
“I don’t think you are.”
The smile turns even more smug: a confession, all by itself. He sits up and leans forward, like someone who’s found a change of conversation to be interesting. His eyes open— managing to find you, somehow, and— can he see you? No. It’s an educated guess, he’s just selling it with confidence.
Leisurely, he rises from his seat and saunters over to the glass. “Let me see you,” he orders, then bargains: “Please? This is so very—” he toes the division— “one-sided.”
You can’t look him in the eyes, can you? This is hard enough without the windows to your soul baring your heart and your mind to him, like they always do. You should have worn those sunglasses he bought you for that undercover assignment. This is what they’re for, right? Hiding.
With a circular swipe of your finger, the glass before you clears and Sylus meets your gaze.
“Hi,” he teases.
You fold your arms across your chest. “Hey.”
“This is quite some effort you’ve gone to, kitten. And all for me, no less.”
“What effort?” you dismiss plainly. “You practically slapped those handcuffs on yourself.”
It’s not an exaggeration: from the cuffs to the ride here, not a single stage of his arrest has been resisted. The closest he’s gotten to a lack of cooperation was when you’d first restrained and dragged him from his study, where he’d been inclined to point out that the bedroom was the other way.
“Well, I didn’t want to cause a fuss,” he smirks. One of his hands is brought forward, and his handcuffs now hang uselessly from a finger. “Tell me,” he says, letting them swing as he holds your gaze, “what am I to expect now I’ve been so masterfully captured?”
You glance at the restraints, unmoved. “That isn’t for me to decide.”
A door behind you slides open, and— right on time— an altogether more impressive presence joins you before the cell. Sylus glances her up and down as the click of her heeled boots come to a stop; he has never met your captain, but he knows her face.
“You really cashed in all your favours, didn’t you, sweetie?” he observes. He turns to address the woman beside you: “We haven’t been introduced. I’m—”
“I know who you are,” Jenna interrupts, her tone as incorruptible as yours.
Sylus’s arm lifts, resting on the glass above you so he can tower over you, despite the partition. “Is that right?” he purrs absent-mindedly, dropping his head so he can speak into your ear. “Sweetie… I thought you could keep a secret.”
He’s goading you into your usual game, but the stakes don’t interest you. “You were wrong.”
You’re at your own table, dealing your own cards. Does he want to play? You think he might. His lips are curving at the delicious prospect of a challenge. You’ve given him a taste of it. He wants more.
Jenna is studying her clipboard, acting oblivious. She senses the impasse. Asks Sylus: “Do you know why you’re here?”
He huffs impatiently. “Enlighten me.”
“Sylus,” you scold.
Red eyes widen a fraction.
You see it.
Good.
Sylus thinks this might be real.
You said his name. His real name: the one with sharp, bloody strings attached. The one on all the posters. The one in your precious Association’s archives, linked to stacks of files and crime scene photos, most of which he isn’t even responsible for.
Sylus. You said: Sylus.
It was worthy of a grand reveal— the sort of plot twist that delivered the suspense of so many thrillers— but here you are, speaking it like it’s nothing. Not a slip of the tongue; not a mistake. And it’s different here. He’s not your Sylus. He’s theirs.
Their murderer. Their monster. Their convenient little scapegoat for everything dark and unholy.
The captain is reading him a list, reeling off every crime— each alleged sin. As if he needs a reminder. As if all the time in the world could ever let him forget. “Needless to say, Mr Sylus,” she summarises, “due to the nature of these crimes, you may prove exempt from our standard procedures. A case like this is… unprecedented. Onychinus has much to answer for. You have much to answer for.”
Sylus hasn’t really been listening; it’s all senseless bureaucracy. “You have the wrong man,” he says, because whatever you’re doing— whatever stunt this is— a confession is sure to derail it. You know that, don’t you? You must be counting on it: holding that guilty breath of yours and hoping he’s smart enough to not be Sylus.
You don’t look worried in the slightest. You must have an awful lot of faith in him.
He studies you, waiting for a small, deliberate smile or a moment of weakness. Give him a sign, don’t give him a sign— it doesn’t matter; he’ll find one. His intentions must be clearer than yours, because you step up to the glass to face him.
Do it, your silence says, even though the rest of you is illegible. You want to look? Look.
His eye could light like a crimson fire— could burn the truth out of you— but it won’t. It’s a promise he made what feels like a lifetime ago, not long after you’d met: Your thoughts and desires are yours to give, not his to take.
Even here. Even now. He’s a man of his word, after all.
Impressed? You smile faintly, but there’s no warmth to it. “Captain,” you speak, your eyes not leaving his, “can you give us a minute? Please?”
“Of course,” the woman answers with a nod.
Sylus does not see her go. He hears it: the retreating rhythm of her shoes. He feels it: it’s just the two of you, alone again. Well, the two of you and that ‘hidden’ camera in the far corner of the room. “Whatever game this is,” he grins good-naturedly, his teeth gritted, “it stops. Now.”
“It’s not a game, Sylus. I told you to take this seriously.”
“What are you doing?” he snaps, and that good-natured grin didn’t last very long.
Your hands land on your hips. “My job.” When he scoffs, you continue: “Did you really think this would end any other way? After everything you’ve done?”
He laughs and it’s deeply sardonic. He’s no saint— to try to convince you he was would be a crime worthy of punishments far worse than this. But you know him. You know the line and what stands on each side of it: everything he’s done, yes, and everything he’s been made to take the fall for.
You wouldn’t do this to him. Would you? “You want to play pretend? Fine,” he hisses. He wants to wrap his Evol around that godforsaken camera and annihilate it. “You caught the big, bad boss of Onychinus— congratulations, sweetie. Sure. Let’s say that’s who I am. A man like that has power, right? So what’s to keep him— me— from escaping? Right now?”
“You’re not going to leave, Sylus. Wanna know why?”
He’s sure you’re going to tell him, and you do:
“Because you’re all talk. All smoke and mirrors. You want to go? Go. But there’s not a single person in this building who wouldn’t give their life to bring you back. Someone will catch up to you eventually, and what then?”
“I’ll have a lot of fun, I imagine.”
“You’ll do nothing,” you correct. “Because those people out there? They’re my friends. My family. You hurt them? You hurt me. Make all the threats you want, Sylus— we both know the truth.”
He towers over you, still, but it’s hard not to shrink at your next words:
“You don’t have it in you.”
Your eyes are sharp: whetted with resentment. Sylus is your reflection— your worthy opponent, always— but he just can’t look at you like that.
There’s a quiet hiss as you slide a finger over the cell’s control panel. White, neon light carves through the glass partition: two vertical lines that bleed upwards, either side of him, before bending to meet each-other. The glass between them shimmers, then fades.
Sylus stands on the precipice of the doorway, cool air crawling past him. He stares up at the camera, then down at you. Your arms have folded again as you watch him— a narrative of apathy.
“How about it, Sylus?” you ask bitterly. “Still think you can outrun fate?”
“No.” Not since it started wearing your face. Fate is you, putting a bullet in his heart, and him, waking up so you can do it over and over again. Maybe this is real. Maybe it isn’t. “What do you want from me?” he entreats softly, because you’ll get it— either way.
“Isn’t it obvious?” you sneer, and your hand shoots out, grasping a fistful of his shirt. You use it to drag him out of the cell, closer, lower, so that his face is mere inches from yours.
“No,” he repeats. “Say it.”
Your eyes burn like pyres: so dangerous, so beautiful, so suited to being the death of him. “I want you—” you begin, as they flit briefly to his lips— “to tell me…”
“What?”
“How you cheat at kitty cards.”
Oh. Oh.
You’re going to be insufferable about this, aren’t you?
Sure enough, you drop his shirt and burst into laughter— irrepressibly you again. The fire in your eyes has simmered down into something warm, safe, and comfortable, and— gods— you’re even crying. You’re doubled over, holding your stomach as though it hurts. You lift a hand to wipe your wet cheek. “Your face,” you get out between gasps, “oh, your face!”
Yours is not the only laughter, but it’s the only laughter Sylus hears.
“We so got you, Skye!” Tara’s vaguely familiar voice resounds from an intercom.
There’s some confusing static with it— more tittering voices— and Sylus suspects he’s found himself the star of your colleagues’ after-work entertainment. He puts his hands on his hips as he looks up at the camera. “Is the whole office—”
“Yeah,” you manage, wiping away another tear. “Figured it would be good for morale. Good practice, too.”
“Practice?”
“Mmhmm,” you confirm with a hum. You’ve apparently gotten a handle on the hilarity of the situation, because you approach him with something close to composure. Meditatively, you smooth down the fabric of his shirt. Straighten his collar. “For when we catch the real Sylus one day.”
He captures your wrists; that’s a lot of tenderness for someone who just tried to give him a heart attack. Maybe he’s a little too rough, because you pout at him in a way that makes him instantly soften his grip.
“You ok, Skye?” you enquire with an ironic smile and an adorable tilt of your head.
His thumbs are feathering over your pulse points, and slowly, he leans in to deliver a message, just for you: “If I say no, will you make it up to me?”
Sylus knows this is real.
His mouth is on yours and it’s relentless, desperate; you made him wait for it. How long has he been wanting to trap you against the nearest wall, just like this, so he can kiss you until he forgets just how cold you can be?
He’s been very patient. He didn’t roll his eyes or utter a word of complaint when you’d dragged him to join your colleagues for dinner. It was your victory party, your ‘I made you look like an idiot’ party, but he was his usual, charming self, and your friends all adored him for it. They’d spun him the tale of his ‘arrest’— the planning, the preparation, and your lightbulb moment:
“Hey, guys, have you ever thought about how Skye kinda looks like Sylus?”
Only he could understand how wickedly clever it was. His eyes had sought yours as he listened, lazy, content, and so obviously biding his time. You’d smiled at him. He’d smiled back.
And he’d stayed smiling, even after the party was over and you’d had to walk a slightly-tipsy Tara home. She’d refused a taxi, insisted Sylus escort her— oh, and you could come, too! He’d lent her his arm: humoured every squeeze and chuckled at each remark about the size of it. You’d had to swat her away, in the end.
“I’m just teasing, y’know?” she’d giggled as the three of you arrived at her front door. “Skye knows I’m just teasing. You’re such a sweetheart, Skye. Imagine! You— the leader of Onychinus!”
She’d laughed, much too loud for such a quiet street, and with a less-than-subtle wink, left the two of you alone. Which is how you’d ended up here, in an alley around the back of her building, because it was Sylus’s turn to drag you somewhere.
His attentions have moved lower; there’s a subtle clink as his fingers find the clasp of your shirt collar and he peels it back, exposing your neck. His lips leave yours, trailing down, down— past the line of your jaw and over the soft, vulnerable column of your throat. You gasp as he brushes over a sensitive spot, and you could swear you feel him smile.
He’s always been passionate, but this is a different fire, fuelled by something you can’t ignore, no matter how much you want to:
Relief.
“Sy,” you murmur breathlessly, your hand in his hair, tugging gently. “Sy, stop.”
“Mmm?” he acquiesces, voice sinfully low as the cold evening air takes his place kissing your neck. His eyes shine like blood spilt in the dead of night— lingering on you. He looks drunk.
You lift a hand to cup his face and run your thumb over his cheek. “I’ll never let anything happen to you, Sylus. You know that, right?”
Those dark eyes find clarity with your words, full of apprehension for just how naive you can be. The future will turn on you just as quickly as a wild animal someone boasts about having tamed, and aren’t you foolish, thinking you can control something like that?
Besides, that’s his job.
“I know,” he says like he’s supposed to— ever the martyr, following the script. He goes to nuzzle into you again, but your hand is still tight in his hair and he groans as you use it to pull him back.
“I mean it,” you reassert, forcing him to look at you. You don’t care that it’s ridiculous. You don’t care that fate is so hot on your heels that you have to keep running. You’re tired. He’s even more tired.
Isn’t it nice to stop and catch your breath?
Pretend you have time: His gaze is full of faith and oh, the world is going to enjoy punishing the two of you. “I know,” he insists, because this is the second time you’ve fooled him tonight. You feel his hand on your face and you let him kiss you— again, then again— so achingly slow, so arrogant.
The world can wait; he wants to punish you first.
“Do you really want to know—” he distracts as he finds that sensitive spot on your neck again— “how I cheat at kitty cards?”
The pad of his finger is chasing the path of his mouth; it tickles. You whine: “Tell me later, Sy.”
“Ok,” he breathes against you.
Later. There’ll be a later.
Won’t there?

Hiiiii can u write a fic about how Billie and reader met!! (With the Billie wall!!!) PLEASEE
Love you mwah Mwahh

Love At First Fan
Billie eilish x fem!reader
Warnings: fluff
It was June 2024 in Berlin, Germany when Billie eilish went to do promo for her new album, “hit me hard and soft”. The last time she came here was in 2019 for her first album “when we all fall asleep where do we go”. Now she’s back after five years and you were finally getting to meet her. There were hundreds of fans waiting to see her and you were one of them. You waited out there for about an hour until you saw her.
It was the Billie eilish. Just a few yards away from you. You felt your heart beat out of your chest and you felt like you couldn’t breathe. She sat on the wall where all the autographs were, making it the Billie wall, and she posed for a photo, remaking the one she did five years ago. You watched her in awe and you hope that she would come over to you.
It’s been about an hour since Billie has been here, she signed a plaque that’s going to be placed on the wall, she did some photos, some interviews and even talked with almost all of the fans. Then she got to you and you were absolutely freaking out on the inside. “Hey sweet girl. How are you?” She said and you thought you were gonna pass out right then and there.
“Hi! I-im great! H-how about you?” You stuttered out and she just kept smiling at you, not even noticing or pointing it out which made you grateful. “I’m good! What’s your name sweetheart?” She asked you and you told her your name. “A beautiful name for a beautiful girl.” She said while giving you a wink which made you go crazy. Billie went up to you and gave you a hug, she leaned in next to your ear. “Meet me here in three hours alone okay?” She whispered and she moved on to the next group of people waiting for her.
~ three hours later ~
It’s been three hours and you were walking up the stairs near the wall when you spotted Billie already sitting up there waiting for you. You smiled big and hurried up the stairs towards her. When she saw that you were coming, she matched the smile you had on your face and hopped down. You got up in front of her and smiled shyly. “It’s crazy that im doing this. I’ve never done this before but y/n you entranced me. I don’t know what it is about you or how you spoke to me but I was hooked the first time I laid my eyes on you.” She explained and you couldn’t believe what you were hearing.
“R-really?” You sputtered out and she took a step forward, looking deep in your eyes. “Yes really. I would love to get to know you more y/n, if that’s okay with you?” She asked and you immediately nodded your head yes. Billie reached for her phone in her back pocket and handed it to you so you could put your number in. You put it in and handed it back to her. “Well I’ll tell you later okay? I need to go and finish some more things but get home safe.” Billie said and you nodded slowly, still not believing that this was happening. Billie smiled and waved bye as she walked down the steps and went inside her car as you stood there in disbelief.
A/n: thank you to the two anons who requested this and for y’all’s kind words! I love y’all too! Mwah! I hope the rest of y’all enjoyed! Remember to stay hydrated and to rest! Take care of yourselves. I love y’all! :)

“Noona, is your camera water resistant?”
You look up from your spot on the floor to find Seungmin hovering over you with a mischievous glint in his eyes. His hair has gotten longer over the past couple of months. Strands of his hair are thrown in all different directions, you can't tell if he just finished getting it styled or if he just got done roughhousing with Changbin. You've grown accustomed to his screaming so even if it was the latter, you didn't notice. His face is bare and slightly damp from having just finished shaving. He tilts his head to the side, waiting for your answer with big eyes and an open smile.
“Seungmin, if you splash me with water, I will buy a water gun at one of the next stops and ruin your day.” You sigh as you carefully set your camera on the floor.
“Is that a promise?” Somehow, his smile gets wider. You can almost imagine a tail wagging excitedly behind him.
Shit.
"Seungmin! It's your turn to get your hair done!" One of their hair stylists calls from the other side of the room.
"Coming!" Seungmin calls back sweetly. Seungmin turns back to you and winks before happily skipping off to get his hair done.
After being teased by Seungmin the entire time the two of you explored Osaka for his one-on-one time with you, you're almost certain that you've become his new favorite target. You’re not even sure why, your reactions aren’t even that great. But still, he does a silly little prank like making you turn your head so he can poke your cheek or asks if he can take a picture of you with your phone only to take several selfies instead and die laughing.
You can’t help but let out a small laugh as you pick up your camera again. While the group is busy getting ready for the show, you’re sitting in the corner by an outlet charging your batteries, double-checking the SD cards, and cleaning all of your lenses. You really only need one battery and SD card but you want to be prepared in case you need to switch them in the middle of the show.
You turn to your side when you notice someone coming up and sitting close to you. You can't help the small smile that creeps up on your face when you realize that it's Jeongin. He doesn't say anything, instead, he brings his knees to his chest, rests his head on them, and pulls out his phone. You look around the room and confirm your suspicions when you see Felix, Jisung, and Minho in front of the talker camera. He knows that if he sits close enough to a staff member, whoever is filming will leave him alone. And since you’re not planning on moving anytime soon, he’s safest next to you.
“Noona, can you take a picture of my hair for me? I can reach the back and everyone else is busy.” Hyunjin comes up to you, holding his phone in his hands.
Hyunjin’s hair doesn’t look any different from how it looked earlier. It's still black and mostly straight, framing his face perfectly. Still, you know he was sitting in the hair stylist’s chair longer than he normally does so something must’ve changed and you can’t see it.
“Sure, but can you sit? I’ve been down here for too long, I think I’m stuck like this,” You try straightening out your legs but the pain that shoots out from them stops you.
Hyunjin nods happily before handing you his phone and kneeling with his back facing you. You fix the settings of the phone camera so you can take the best possible picture for him. When you look up, ready to take the picture, Hyunjin has put his hair in a little bun. The bun reveals that he buzzed off the underside of his head again. In the bottom corner, he has a small heart and the word 'Stay' shaved into it.
"Oh, you did an undercut again?" You ask softly so as to also not disturb Jeongin's peace and quiet.
"Yeah, I've been getting hot and my hair is too long." He turns around with a bright smile. You quickly snap a picture of him before motioning him to turn back around. "I might leave my hair down for now and reveal it during 'So Good.'"
Click.
"Let someone on the camera crew know so they can be sure to zoom in on the 'Love Stay.'" You take a few pictures of his hair, some from different angles, before tapping him on the shoulder and handing back his phone. "Can you send those to me? I might be able to use them."
Hyunjin smiles and nods vigorously as he checks the pictures on his phone. Instead of getting up, he sits facing you, still on his phone. After a few moments, you feel your phone go off in your pocket.
"Take a picture of my hair too!" Felix yells, running over with his phone.
"Ah, Yongbokkie, that's too loud." Hyunjin laughs as he scoots over so Felix can sit in front of you.
"Sorry," Felix says sheepishly. He starts patting his pockets before freezing. "Ah, I don't have my phone."
"Here," Hyunjin hands you his phone again so you can take pictures of Felix's hair for him.
Felix has been documenting all of his hairstyles from the tour so far. You could probably fill up an entire magazine of all of his hairstyles alone. Today, his hair is not much different from other looks but still a bit different. His hair has recently been bleached again, only to touch up the roots. Both of you have talked about him going back to a darker hair color after the first half of the tour to give his hair a break from all of the bleach. But for now, as long as his hair and scalp allows it, he's sticking with the blond.
"Do you like my hair, noona?" Felix asks after settling down low enough so you can see better.
His hair, except for a few strands, is pulled back into two star-shaped buns in the back of his head in a sort of half-up style. It's similar to the bow style you remember seeing pictures of circulating online earlier in the year. Felix moves and you see something in his hair catching in the light, shining brightly. The more that you look at it, you can see that his stylist added some silver tinsel into his hair.
"It's cute, Felix. Might be one of my favorite styles yet." You take a few pictures with flash so that the tinsel shines.
"Thank you," Felix beams as if he did his hair himself, turning around once the flashes stop and taking the phone back from you. He quietly hands the phone back to Hyunjin, not even checking the pictures. "I asked if they could do five stars in my hair but they were having trouble so we just did two. They said we can try 5 next time after they practice a bit more."
"Since they could make two stars with your hair, they might be able to try two flowers. Maybe even color it with hair chalk?" You suggest. Felix asks for hairstyle recommendations almost every time he sees you.
A few times he's convinced you to ask a stranger if you could take a picture of their hair while you're out with him and the kids so he could have a reference to show his stylists. It's one of the stranger things you've bonded over with someone, but sometimes it leads to strange texts from Felix of random pictures he's found online. And it's all because you mentioned how much you liked the bow bun he had.
"If they do that, do you think we can go out and find some flowers for me to take pictures with? Or like, a flower field? I'll even do a flower pose and you can use it for the magazine." Felix's eyes light up with excitement. He's speaking so fast that you almost don't understand him as he stumbles over his words.
Making 9 different versions of basically the same magazine has been hard so you welcome any sort of suggestions from them. And they enjoy the creative freedom. Seungmin suggested a whole coffee shop spread where he reviews coffees from each city you're in. Part of you think it's an excuse for him to drink coffee. Jeongin also tends to ask you to take an outfit of the day picture so he has a little fashion spread going. Whenever they go out to eat, Minho has been trying different foods and sending you pictures, the names of the foods, and ratings. At this point, you're going to have to put their names on the credits page under creative directors.
"Dinner time!" Chan sings as he walks into the room with a few staff members in tow. Chan, carrying two full bags, heads to the center of the room where there's a couch and small table. The other four staff members head to a table off to the side.
"C'mon, let's go," Hyunjin whispers softly to everyone.
Hyunjin, Felix, and Jeongin get up and follow you over to Chan so they can get their food. Soon after Minho and Jisung join them. You watch as the staff members who aren't preoccupied with something go over to the table off on the side to get their food.
You pack your cleaning equipment up and set it off to the side. You swap the battery in the charger with the one currently in the camera. Just as you're about to get up, Changbin is standing in front of you with both of his hands stretched out in front of him, waiting. You quietly chuckle to yourself as you take his hands and slightly pull yourself up as he tugs.
It's weird having Changbin willingly interact with you after months of him avoiding you like the plague. He's still cautious around you, hardly talking about anything outside of interview questions. At least, nothing that truly matters. But he is talking to you. He's even tagged along a few times when one or some of the members kidnaps you for a few hours.
"Thank you," You smile as you adjust your clothes. You lean back against the wall for a bit for support as the blood flows back into your legs.
Changbin nods as a response before turning and walking towards the other members. He pauses for a moment, turning back to you. His freshly straightened dyed black hair falls slightly over his eyes as he tilts his head. "Eat well,"
"You too, Changbin," You reply with a smile on your face.
You almost miss the small, satisfied smile that appears on his face before he nods and walks to join the other members for dinner. It was only there for a moment. So quick that you're certain that it's the first genuine smile he's given you that wasn't for the camera. You're not even sure he was aware of the fact that he did it. It was more like a reflexive twitch than an intentional action.
Note to self: try to get Changbin to smile like that more for pictures.
You kick yourself off the wall and head back to join the other staff members for dinner.

A Walk Down Memory Mane
Tumblr media
“Baby? There you are. I’ve been looking all over for yo-. Are you crying?” “Y/N.” “Y/N my love”
“Y/Nie please turn around. I need to see you” he pleads , a slight brush of his fingers on your sweater.
Very slowly, you turn around and he catches a glimpse of you, puffy eyed, tremors still coursing through your body, tiny fists peeking beneath the sweater paws, clenched tightly.
‘Aww Y/N please don’t cry love. It’s going to make me upset too.” You can see him trying his hardest to be strong for you but it most definitely is difficult. His dad had arrived , to do the honors of shaving his head before he enlisted tomorrow.
You could get behind him serving his country, a  small break from his career and taking one for the team- the first of Seventeen to volunteer in the military. But you drew the line at him shaving off his head.
His beautiful silky hair that could make anyone jealous. His thick luscious hair that was off limits to anyone to touch except for you.
You had special privileges, he’d declared one night. He’d pushed away your crocheting tools from your lap, ignoring your indignant squawks and placed his head on your lap , demanding that you play with his hair instead. “Crochet my hair Y/Nie” he had pouted at you shushing your still going rants.
And now , these beautiful locks of hair were going to fall off his perfectly shaped head to reveal more of his framed face?
“Stop moping baby. Look we have some time before the boys come over. Look what I got” He pulled back your long sweater sleeve and placed a small gift bag into your limp palm. You look down to see scrunchies? "Hair ties? ” You say as much.
‘Not just any hair ties love. Look these are the ones you used on me after our first date to the beach when you took two of these bands from your stash and tied my hair up into two small braids. Remember? I never gave it back to you because I treasured it for so long.” You did remember. You’d borrowed your dad’s jeep and he'd driven around the sandy beach, windows rolled down jamming to trot songs- something you both had shared mutual love over. Although he did look hot with his hair flying in the wind you could tell he was annoyed when wispy strands fell into his mouth anytime he opened his mouth to sing. Therefore you offered the perfect solution- a small stop to braid his hair and let him have his popstar moment while you ogled from the passenger seat. Manhandling you to sit properly, he pushes your knees apart-
“What are you doing?” “Patience baby.” He shot you a cheeky wink from beneath your legs, turning around to sit between them, not before he gave your knee a small kiss- an action not uncaught by your reflexive system- you shivered.
“Alright Y/N , go crazy.”
Huh?
He turns around to look back at you with slight huff.
“You still didn’t get it baby? I want you to do any and every hairstyle you can do with my hair before Cheol comes and Appa shaves it all off. Come on now weren’t you the one who begged me to let you try out a new hairstyle. The waterman hair?” “The waterfall hair” you correct. “Potato potato" he counters. “It’s tomato tomato actually.” He nips at your knee in a warning gesture making you yelp out and kick him unknowingly . He turned back at you with another pout. ‘Baby please.” “All right, turn around.”
Placing your fingers between his beautiful tresses you get to work. It’s been fifteen minutes and you cannot stop the tears. From between your knees you can hear Hannie sniffle quietly. Both of you don’t bother consoling the other, it’s going to be a crying fest soon. When you first met him, you weren’t attracted to him because men with long hair were not your type. However a certain Jeonghannie with smooth silky hair that rivaled your jealousy wormed his way into your heart, all inches of his satin lustrous barnet included. His hair was his pride. The very pride that he had decided to grow even further and chop off to make a wig for you once the chemotherapy started making you lose your hair in clumps.
“Here they made a wig out of my hair. This way we can stay connected in a more special way. I am in your hair in more literal terms than figurative. ”
His hair that was your muse to practice different techniques and master your craft. He would petulantly whine every time you pulled a strand too harsh, only pacified if you gave him an extra long kiss to make up for your ‘exploitation’. His words not yours.
His hair that was your drive to get better in therapy. Every time you looked into the mirror and stared at your sunken eyes, hollow figure and protruding ribs, he was right behind you, holding you close to him and ensuring you were ‘beautiful’ in his eyes. You’d lookback through the mirror at his voluminous hair that cascaded down his shoulders and wish that one day, you could feel beautiful the way your boyfriend fiercely argued you were. “Don’t give up love. Stay strong, let’s heal together. Don’t you want to grow out your hair and then we can try new hairstyles and exchange hair masks and conditioners? Because I want to baby. "
His hair that he used to tease your baby niece and nephew over who was the prettiest princess. “Oh it’s Elsa.”
“No it’s Snow White.
No it’s uncle Hannie.”  End of argument.
He’d bask under the attention of baby fingers grubbly holding onto his flowy hair, while they ‘ooohed’ and awed over how soft it was. “Pretty princess Uncle Hannie”
And now you clutched those thick blonde locks, fingers trembling as they combed through the silky strands, desperately fighting back tears. Soon, they would tumble to the floor, just as you feared you might, dissolving into a heap of vulnerability and loss.
His hair, a canvas of shared memories, was soon to be transformed into a buzzcut—something you teasingly called as "egg head."
For now, you focused on perfecting that waterfall hairstyle, cherishing every moment before change swept away the weaves.
A.N: Bye imma cry. I keep telling myself this is not my first rodeo, I have been sending off boys to the military since Jin first left in 2022. But something about Jeonghan losing that hair- imma-

i’m a teacher and i had a kid draw a swastika in my classroom on like. the second day of school. so one of our admin came in to two of my classes the next day to talk about it. and she started by telling this story about how she had a hijabi student. and a boy in the class was “really curious about what her hair looked like.” and had the students guess what happened next (pulled the hijab off, gross and awful) and how that might have made the hijabi student feel. at this point i’m sitting at my desk like “it’s been five minutes are we going to talk about the swastika” and then she finally goes “yesterday someone drew a symbol that represents division. and hate. and those aren’t things we stand for” and a kid (of course) was like what was it? and this fucking woman turns to me and goes “are you comfortable sharing what it was?”
?????? i thought that’s why you were here?? i thought you were here to explain why swastikas are not okay, and we are seven minutes into your little presentation and you haven’t said the word swastika or even jewish. so i said it was a swastika and several of the kids didn’t know what that was. which was disturbing on its own as i teach middle school but i digress. i said no way in hell am i drawing one so my admin looks at me and is like “could you google a picture?”
can’t believe i did this but i didn’t know what else to do in the moment so i pulled up a google image search of swastikas and projected it on the board. at no point did the admin say “hey you can take that down now” it just sat up there until i got uncomfortable and sick to my stomach enough to close it myself. and then she came back the next period and did the WHOLE song and dance again (no jewish, no antisemitism, not even the word NAZI which is insane to me) and STILL told the opening story about the hijabi girl even with two hijabi girls sitting in the class this time who were clearly uncomfortable.
this was like three weeks ago and it’s been quietly bothering me for a while and i finally told my (nonjewish) work friends about it and they were all like “holy shit that’s so fucked that she asked you to do that” and i told my (jewish) partner and he went “she couldn’t have picked up a fucking marker??” and that was when it really hit me.
maybe she didn’t want to be in a situation where she drew a swastika on a jewish teachers whiteboard. ok. but she apparently didn’t consider the WORSE implications of asking that same jewish teacher to google an image of a swastika and project a google image search of a page FULL of swastikas on her board.
AND she never once checked in with me after that. she left the class without talking to me again and hasn’t said a word about it since. i remember i even asked her “do you want me to leave the room” beforehand because im thinking i don’t want to have to look at swastikas but she asked me to stay because “the impact is real and they need to see it” which. uh. i’ve been pushing this experience down for weeks bc at the end of the day it “wasn’t that bad” but like. holy shit. she really wanted to put my trauma on display for the students instead of just asking me to leave and explaining what a swastika is/showing them one. and it took her nearly ten minutes to get to the actual swastika!! i’m just. so done

the message is vague enough to keep him in the dark, but you know it’ll get him to come. it’s not like you ask him for serious talks often; most of your time together is filled with playful teasing and lighthearted moments. but tonight, you need answers
you arrive at the park first. it’s quiet and dark, with only the rustling of leaves and the distant hum of city life in the background. the swings creak lightly in the cold breeze, and as you sit down on one, you can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation tighten in your chest
you’ve known for a while that something has been off with takuma, but he’s been good at hiding it. or at least, he thought he was. you've caught the small signs—the way his smile doesn’t quite reach his eyes anymore, the way he avoids eye contact during conversations that cut a little too deep
it’s unlike him, the takuma who’s always brimming with energy and confidence. and that’s why you asked him to meet here, in a place where you both feel at ease. it’s a space where neither of you have to wear masks
when takuma finally arrives, his hands tucked into his jacket pockets and his usual laid-back grin on his face, you feel a flicker of doubt. should you really bring this up? what if he shuts you out?
but then, his grin falters as he approaches you, noticing the serious look on your face
"hey, you okay?" he asks, leaning against the swing set’s frame, brown hair peeking out of his black beanie. "you sounded kind of… intense in your message."
you take a deep breath, watching the way he fidgets slightly, and gesture for him to sit on the swing beside yours. the soft creak of metal accompanies his movements as he settles next to you, his shoulder brushing against yours
"i’ve been wanting to talk to you for a while," you start, your voice calm but tinged with the weight of the conversation ahead. "i feel like something’s been bothering you… and i just want to know what’s going on."
takuma shifts uncomfortably, his eyes darting away from yours as he tries to laugh it off. "what? nah, i’m fine. i’m the same old takuma you've always—"
"don’t," you interrupt gently, reaching out to lightly touch his arm. "don’t pretend like everything’s okay. i can tell something’s been off since the beginning. your interactions with toji, your insecurity before the race…"
the words hang in the air, heavy and undeniable. he glances at you, his easygoing façade cracking slightly, revealing the turmoil underneath. his jaw tightens, and you can see the battle in his mind—whether to keep pretending or let the truth spill out
after a long, tense pause, he sighs deeply, his shoulders slumping forward. he rubs a hand over his face, looking more vulnerable than you’ve ever seen him
"it’s not that i didn’t want to tell you," he begins, his voice quieter now. "i just… i didn’t know how to say it. and part of me didn’t want to burden you with it."
"burden me with what?" you ask, heart racing
takuma looks down at his feet, the swing swaying slightly under his weight as he takes another deep breath. "it’s toji. training with him, getting into motogp, it’s… it’s been harder than i thought it would be. at first, i was all in, you know? i wanted to prove i could do it. prove i could live up to his expectations."
you sit quietly, letting him speak at his own pace. his usual relaxed demeanor has melted away, leaving behind someone who’s been carrying a heavy weight in silence
"i mean he's the one who recruited me. he saw something in me. but… it’s never enough," he says, his voice tinged with frustration and self-doubt. "no matter how hard i push, no matter how much i improve, it’s like… like i’m always falling short. toji sets these insane standards—perfect turns, perfect laps, perfect everything. i thought i could handle it, but it’s been messing with my head."
his hand tightens around the chain of the swing, knuckles turning white. "every mistake, every criticism… it’s just piling up. and now, i can’t even look at myself without feeling like i’m failing. like i’m not good enough."
you stare at him, your chest tightening at the rawness of his confession. you never imagined that beneath his confident exterior, takuma was battling this deep sense of inadequacy
"takuma…" you murmur, reaching out to place your hand over his. he flinches slightly at the contact but doesn’t pull away
"i thought i could handle it," he continues, voice shaky now. "i really did. but the truth is, all that negativity… it’s been dragging me down. i didn’t want you to see me like this—weak, second-guessing everything. i didn’t want you to think i was…" he trails off, unable to finish the sentence, as if saying the words aloud would make them real.
you squeeze his hand gently, trying to convey in that single touch how much you care, how much he means to you. "you’re not weak, takuma. not to me. you’re strong, and you’ve worked so hard to get where you are. it’s okay to feel this way—it doesn’t make you any less of who you are."
you shift your body, turning to him fully. "plus, you're the best racer i know. seriously."
he looks at you then, really looks at you, and for the first time, you see the vulnerability in his eyes that he’s been hiding. the air between you shifts, charged with a sudden intensity that neither of you can ignore. the way his gaze softens, the way his breath hitches slightly—there’s something there, simmering just beneath the surface
"i don’t know what i’d do without you," he whispers, his words barely audible, as if he’s scared to admit just how much he’s relied on you. "i don't know how i lived before a month ago."
the closeness between you feels electrifying, like the air itself is alive with unspoken emotions. you hear your swing creak softly as it drifts back and forth, watching his do the same as well
"takuma…" you breathe, your heart pounding in your chest. the tension is thick, undeniable, and you know exactly where it’s heading. you’ve felt this pull before, but never like this—never so overwhelming, so inevitable
"i… i have something else to say. since we're sharing secrets and all… even though im two for two and you're just listening but…" takuma asks, clearing his throat soon after. "can you come over here?"
the creak of the metal was heard as you stood up from the rubber seating. ino wasn't even a full two feet away from you and you could hear each other perfectly from where you were sitting but you still walked over and positioned yourself right in front of him. you hear him mutter something along the lines of ‘it's okay. i got this’, before actually starting to speak to you again
"uh… i um… i– no. i-i—," he pauses and stares at you for a bit, getting just a little lost in your eyes, before resting his head on your stomach, "i can't do it…"
a soft laugh escapes your lips. "mmm, tell me when you're ready." you slipped his beanie off and ran your hands through his hair. it would be a lie if you said that you've never thought about doing this before. takuma's hair was just so shiny and silky looking and the way the strands framed his face, it was all so—
ino pulled away from his comfortable spot on your body, looking up at you with his big brown round eyes. breath hitched in your throat as you snapped your head to look elsewhere, feeling that if you stared at him for a second longer, you wouldn't be able to look away. instinctively, you removed your hand from his locks, already missing the feeling
"sorry, do you—"
you weren't even able to finish before he responded, like he knew exactly what you were thinking. takuma laced your hand with his and placed it right back atop his head, settling right back on your plush stomach
"nah, you can do whatever you want t'me."

a little teaser of the 5 + 1 fic:
He watches Odysseus sink to his knees in the sea, reaching down to splash water on his face, and ignores the frantic beating of his heart. He could tell himself that it’s just the excitement of the kill, the leftover adrenaline in his veins like he used to tell himself, but denying it seems pointless after ten years.
Pulling his bloodied tunic over his head and dropping it into the sand, Diomedes wades into the waves next to Odysseus, and then passes him, until he can submerge himself fully into the water. For a moment, there is nothing, just the cold empty embrace of the sea. He breathes deep as he resurfaces, blinking the salt out of his eyes to see Odysseus’s grinning face.
“Here.” Odysseus says, patting the shallow water in front of him.
Diomedes wades back towards the shore to sit in front of his friend. Odysseus rises up onto his knees behind him, and with gentle fingers, begins pulling at Diomedes hair, releasing the damp curls from the three long plaits Sthenelus put them in yesterday.
He grits his teeth as Odysseus tugs at the knots. “Gentle.”
“I’ve seen you walk around camp with a spearhead stuck in your shoulder like it’s nothing, stop complaining about me tugging on your hair.” Odysseus says.
“Hm.”
Silence passes over them, and Diomedes shuts his eyes, content to watch the inside of his eyelids grow more and more orange as the sun rises higher and higher past the horizon. When Odysseus has freed all of his hair from the braids, he dips his hands into the waves, massaging the salty water clinging to his fingertips into Diomedes’ scalp. A heavy groan releases itself from his throat.
“Mm.” Odysseus hums in response, clearly pleased at the reaction he elicited.
Once Odysseus’s fingers still, Diomedes turns around to look at his friend, admiring the way the sun paints his face. He lets his eyes trail over his nose and cheeks, moving down until he’s met with his lips, already curled into a smirk, like he knows where this is going. It’s been going to the same place for nearly eight years.
“You’ve got blood in your beard.”
“Ah.” Odysseus says. “Will you-?”
“Of course.” Diomedes places a gentle hand to the back of Odysseus’s neck, and watches his friend's eyes flutter shut. Leaning close, he lets his breath hit Odysseus’s lips and watches him swallow sharply. With a triumphant grin, he pushes his friend face-first into the waves.
Cackling as Odysseus arises from the ocean with an indignant splutter, he’s ready when he lunges forward, attempting to wrap his hands around Diomedes’ neck. They throw each other about for a while, each catching more than one faceful of salty water and a punch or two to the stomach. It doesn’t last long as they’re both already tired, and Odysseus is the first to give in, raising his hands in surrender as he flops back down into the wet sand.
“Truce.”
“Alright,” Diomedes says, leaning forward to plant a salty kiss on his friend’s lips. “Truce.”
Odysseus licks the salt from his lips with a grin, and opens his mouth to speak, but is interrupted by a long growl from Diomedes’ stomach. “We need to eat.”
“Mm.”

38. Long Chat (wrdc 1.7k)
You put the pot in your hand down recognizing the man in front of you. “Oh my god what are you doing here?” You said sharply. “I thought you went out with the rest of them.”
“No, I stayed behind to clear some thoughts.” He said with his arms still up as a shield protecting himself. “You put the pot down right?”
“Yeah you’re safe.”
He let out a breath he was holding putting his arms down. There was an awkward silence as you both stood looking at one another. You had planned on holding off talking as much as you could but it seems like the world had other plans for you.
“I’m sorry for bothering you, i’ll just head back to my room so I don’t get in your way anymore.” Jaemin said with a forced smile. He turned away but before he could get away you spoke.
“Wait.” He stopped in his tracks. “Can we talk?”
The best part of summer in jeju island was that once the sun went down so did the temperature. Hot afternoons became bearable, and the atmosphere was warm in a way where people would spend the whole night out partying. You’d had enough of that since two nights ago, so here sat you and Jaemin on some beach chairs beside the pool at the beach house with left over beers from the fridge on a table.
It was quiet as you both sat admiring the light reflecting from the water in the pool. You could tell Jaemin felt uneasy, he had opened his own can of beer about five minutes ago and still hadn’t taken a sip. You felt guilty even though you were the one who had pulled him for a chat in the first place.
You took in a breath before ripping off the bandaid, figuratively of course. “Jaem, I’m sorry.” He looked at you puzzled but before he could speak you continued. “I was kind of avoiding you and I realize that it wasn’t fair to do but I really just needed a moment to get my head together.”
He gave you a genuine nod. “You don’t have to explain yourself, i’m sorry for expecting anything to happen between us.” He could hardly look you in the eye.
“What do you mean?”
“I’m just really sorry. I like you a lot but I should know better than to pressure you into anything more than just being friends.” He stared down at the ground and though the lighting was limited, you swear you could see his eyes begin to water.
“Jaem–“
“I understand you not wanting to talk anymore. Don’t worry, when we get back i’ll put in my two weeks notice and I’ll get out of your hair.” His voice came out broken and he still refused to meet your gaze. He slowly began to sit up from his seat.
“Jaemin wait.” You pulled his arm keeping him from walking away. He turned to face you though he looked everywhere else but at you. You could tell there were tears welling up. “What’s this really about?”
He only shook his head taking a deep breath. “I’m really sorry.” You grabbed onto his face pulling his attention from the ground to yourself. “Hey, it’s okay please just tell me what happened.”
“Woah, what a fucking bitch.” You sat down, feet in the pool while Jaemin sat next to you.
He let out a dry laugh. “She wasn’t wrong.”
You felt a surge of anger, how dare she ever make this man feel anything other than happy. “Jaemin, she was very wrong.” He looked at you then.
“Ever since i’ve met you, you’ve been nothing but helpful. Every movie we’ve watched together, every volleyball game we played, even walks on the beach you’ve been the best company I could ask for.” You could see the smallest doubt in his face so you continued.
“Jaemin, do you know why I’ve been avoiding you? It had nothing to do with you, it was because I needed a moment where I could reflect on the new feelings i’ve had ever since i’ve met you.” He looked confused. “I had to talk to Jaehyun because even though I once loved him I needed closure so that I could move on and pursue the feelings i’ve had for you for a while now.”
You felt your face get warm at your blatant confession. “Me and Jaehyun would never be able to work ever again. When he left me to pursue his career one part of me felt like I hated him for leaving me and the other part only felt guilty that I wanted him to choose me over his career.”
“That’s not your fault. You loved him. It’s no wonder you wanted him to stay with you.” He gave you a sympathetic look.
“Yeah and I can say the same for you. It’s not your fault that I was avoiding you. I realize I was only pushing you away because I was scared to lose you the way I lost Jaehyun only it mattered more because the way I feel about you hasn’t ever been the way I felt for him.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that you, Na Jaemin, are enough to me. You’re more than enough for me. I didn’t notice it before because it was so different but I like you. My heart beats every time you’re around, I look for you the moment you’re not by my side, and I even find myself jealous when you’re laughing with Hyuck instead of me.”
He lets out a laugh, “Hyuck?”
“Don’t even ever mention that to him.” You covered your face, full of embarrassment. His hand reached out to yours this time uncovering your face.
“Hey, look at me.”
You opened one eye at a time, still too shy to meet his eyes. He smiled at you this time very genuine. It only made your face hotter and this time you couldn’t blame it on the alcohol.
“I like you Y/N. Ever since the first time we met I couldn’t help but feel like I was drawn to you. I wasn’t even jealous of you and Jaehyun,” He paused for a moment, “Okay, well I was a bit when I found out he wrote a whole song for you but that’s it.”
You let out a chuckle. “I heard it. Very nice song but I don’t think that’s enough to rekindle anything. I don’t think I could feel anything for anyone but you.”
He blushed at your words. “Dammit I was supposed to be the romantic one.”
“Right, please continue.”
“The point is, I was scared that you didn’t feel the same. I’m always scared that i’ll do something that’ll change how people feel towards me but I think i’m willing to take that risk if it means I can be with you in the moment.”
“All i’m hearing is you’re so down bad for me.” You say teasingly.
“I’m glad you’re finally catching on.”
You can’t help but really take in the moment. Here you are right on the edge of a pool, the moon shining down on the two of you. A part of you is really happy that the world had you face him earlier than you planned, who knows how that talk would’ve played out before.
You can feel his gaze on you and it only makes you giddy. There’s no use holding back anything anymore so you move closer to Jaemin. “The moon is beautiful tonight isn’t it?”
“If the moon in question is you, then it’s always been.” You’re unsure when the gap became smaller between the two of you but here you are looking him in the eyes. Jaemin quickly glances at your lips and you smile knowing exactly what’s next.
“You gonna keep staring or actually do something?” Within a second he clears the space between the two of you catching your lips on his. You can feel the softness of his mouth as he kisses you so gently and intimately.
You pull back looking him in the eye still feeling the lingering effect of his lips. He looks lost in your gaze. Liking his lips while smiling to himself. His smile is quickly replaced with shock the second you playfully push him into the pool. You jump in afterwards poking your head out of the water only to find him smiling at you.
“What was that for?”
“I’m sorry I had a burst of cuteness aggression and pushed you too hard.” You say laughing. He joins you in your laughter pulling you closer to him in the pool.
“You’re lucky you’re so cute.”
“I’m also lucky to have you. We’re dating now by the way.” You say straight forward.
“Of course, but just so you know there’s no getting rid of me.”
“Hmm there’s not even a thirty day return policy?” You tap your finger on your chin playfully.
“Nope,” He says popping the p, “All sales final.” He pulls you in for another kiss. You can’t help but smile into it, this time he’s much more desperate with the way he kisses you. As if he’d been wanting you his entire life.
You feel his tongue tease your lip asking for permission to deepen it. He’s kissing you so much more passionately than before, you feel like you’re drowning in him which is ironic considering you were both standing in a pool at the moment.
Right when you feel like you have no more room to breathe he pulls away. You let out a small whine at the loss, cringing at the way he was able to pull that noise out of you.
“I think they’re back already.”
“What?” You’re lost in thought before realizing he meant the rest of your friends made it back to the beach house.
Ugh so much for alone time.
“We should get out and shower, don’t wanna get sick from being in the pool this late at night.”
You groan at the thought of leaving him. “I’m not ready to let you go.”
He lets out a small chuckle. “It’ll only be for a moment, unless you’re looking to shower together?” He raises his eyebrows at you.
You roll your eyes shoving him away. “You freaking perv.”
“Hey you suggested it.”
“Ugh well you’re my boyfriend so I guess i’m stuck with this now anyway.”
He giggles softly, “Boyfriend yeah? Could you say it again?”

Lost in your Love pt 4
Read Part: 1 2 3
Summary: After the day's events Alastor decides to go visit his beloved friend to see if she has any answers.
Vox x Reader, (Alastor x Reader)
◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈ ◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈
Alastor runs his hands over the panel, fiddling with the switches, his head pulsing. He needs time to think, needs his questions answered. Anyone will do! Of all the thoughts to pass through his mind an idea is finally presented in his head.
Rosie!
Why hadn’t he thought of that before?!
With smile on his face Alastor makes his way to the wonderful cannibal town.
The emporium is full as always, the line is out the door, children sinners press their faces on the windows drooling, the women gossip while eating pinky fingers, men are chatting about nothing too interesting.
There among the crowd of people hovering over her was the delightful Rosie.
Alastor made his presence known by letting out a few static sounds.
Roise perks up her head, “Alastor? Oh, Alastor is that you?! My, my where have you been?!” Rosie stands up from her seat making her way over to him, arms ready to hug him. “Have you been eating?! You’re looking more flimsy than usual dear!” she giggles.
“I’m doing just fine my friend! I’ve just been busy with a new project!”
“Why that’s good to hear! Come sit, sit I’m sure you have much to discuss!” She brings him over to a table.
“I’m afraid I won’t be able to stay to long, I just have some questions, and I was wondering if you may be able to answer them.”
“I’ll doing anything I can my friend!” She sits in her chair, sipping her teacup.
Alastor takes a breath while he sits down, “Have you heard from my wife lately?”
Rosie spits out her tea, she begins to cough rapidly, punching her chest, “I’m sorry, but what do you mean your wife?”
“Yes, my wife, Y/n, have you spoken to her?”
“Wife? Y/n?” Rosie looks confused.
“Rosie, please do not play any games with me, I’ve brought Y/n to your emporium many times, you two always swapped books.”
“I know a Y/n, but that Y/n isn’t your wife, why I believe I would be the first to know if you had a wife!”
“Then who’s the Y/n you know?”
“Vox’s wife of course!”
Everything is still.
Still and silent.
Rosie is still talking, but Alastor hears nothing. His hands begin to claw the table. His eyes begin to turn into dials.
“Alastor?”
Vox.
Y/n.
Y/n is Vox’s wife.
Vox is Y/n’s husband.
“Alastor!!”
Alastor jolts up, “I’m sorry my dear, I’m just a bit surprised, that Y/n is married to vox...” He grits his teeth.
“Of course they’re married! They were married in life, might as well be married in hell! Oh, and they’re so cute together, you can definitely tell that Vox loves her.”
He feels like his teeth are about to break with how much he’s smiling.
Married in life?
Alastor and Y/n WERE married in life. Not Vox and Y/n.
“My dear Rosie, Y/n simply cannot be his wife… you know most of all that she is my wife.”
Rosie tilts her head, “No, she couldn’t be your wife, I would remember an such an important detail! Alastor... did you have a bit of crush on Y/n? Its understandable but you can’t go after a married woman! That wouldn’t be very gentlemanly!”
Alastor runs a hand through his hair, slightly pulling it.
He knew that Vox had feelings for his wife, he just never thought he’d have the guts to take her from him.
But that doesn’t explain why Roise doesn’t remember Y/n being his wife.
“Thank you for answering my questions my dear! Unfortunately, I must be going now!”
“Oh, Alastor I’m sorry if that wasn’t what you wanted to hear! I’m sure you’ll find someone someday!” She yells out to him as Alastor leaves the emporium.
Just what in the hell is going on?
◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈ ◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈
In your bed you lay awake thinking of the day’s events. The Radio Demon held your hand so gently. Why? Why would the demon look at you with such care? He must be scheming. Your eyes grow tired, and you feel yourself being pulled into a dream.
A sweet tune of jazz is playing as you dance with your husband, your eyes are shut placing your head on his chest. He’s swaying you slowly as the tune comes to an end.
“I love you dearest.”
You raise your head to meet his gaze.
“I love you too Alastor.”
You immediately awaken.  You sit up in your bed, you raise your hand to your face, breathing heavily, feeling sweaty.
Alastor.
Why were you thinking of Alastor so lovingly? He’s not your husband.
You place your hand to the other side of the bed to find Vox still sleeping. You reach your hand closer to his screen, gently caressing his face. This man….is your husband.
Yes… that’s right.
Vox is your husband.
That Radio Demon must have put those ideas into your head. Holding you so lovingly, tenderly. It was just a dream… did you want to have those feelings for him? No, of course not. You loved your husband.
But the dream…. it felt so right.

Downfall (WandaxFemReader) 1/8
Tumblr media
18+ MINORS DNI
Warnings: Death, Mean Wanda, Mentions of Cheating, Accident, Brief Blood Description, Angst
A/n-I'm going to make this an eight part mini series enjoy!
Tumblr media
Y/n’s POV
All I want to do is relax in my girlfriends arms and take a nap. I’ve had such a long day between paper work and planning with Nat. After spending ten hours at work correcting and filing mission reports I traveled half an hour to Nat’s house to spend an hour planning, and then another half hour home. I haven’t even had the time to eat.
I walk through our entry way to search for Wanda. She isn’t in the living room so I check the kitchen next. She’s sitting at our table with a pissed off look. “Hello my love! Are you okay?” I ask concerned by her facial expression. She looks up at me with a glare and has her head tilted to the side. She speaks calmly, it’s almost eerie to hear her speak in such a normal tone while glaring at me. “Where were you?” I look at her confused, I had told her where I was going last night. “I was at work and then after I went to sort something out.”
Her glare stays upon her face, eyes piercing into me. “And what things?” She speaks as though she is accusing me of something. I sigh knowing exactly what this is and how it is going to go. Wanda has always been afraid of me lying or doing things behind her back. I can’t blame her and I never invalidated them. Her ex, Vision, used to cheat on her and gaslight her into believing that she was just crazy for it. We have been working on this for years but nothing like this has happened in months. But lately she’s been acting strange. She questions everything I do, and I have no problem reassuring her every time she needs me too. But I also can’t help but wonder if someone else has something to do with this.
“I can’t tell you what things baby. Not yet.” A look of confusion briefly flashes across her face. “Why not, are you hiding something from me?” I try to step closer to her but she gives me a warning look so I stay here. “Kind of but it’s nothing bad I promise you it’s not what you think!” She scoffs at me. “Oh yeah? Cause I think that you left work two hours early to go to your coworkers house!” I’m not surprised she checked my location, she always does. And I have no problem sharing it with her as I have nothing to hide. “Yes I went to Nat’s house, I told you I was going. She is not only OUR coworker but also my best friend!” I would never deny it nor would I lie to her about where I am.
“Do people who are just friends go to each others house instead of home to their partners! No. It’s not even that, it’s the fact that you just won’t tell me what you were doing!” She has never thought this way about anyone that I have hung out with. I am almost certain that someone is making her doubt me. “Wands she is our friend not just mine you have known her for years. She has a wife! Not to mention I would never ever do that to you!” I try to reassure her the best I can but I don’t think it’s working at all. “Then why can’t you tell me what you were doing?!?!” She raises her voice a little which cause a small flinch from me as it came as a surprise. “Because I need it to be a surprise baby please! Can’t you just trust me after eight years?”
She rolls her eyes at me. “Apparently not, its so obvious you’re trying to hide something from me.” I feel a little hurt by her words but I brush it off. I know she doesn’t mean it, she’s just worried. But she’s said it enough maybe she is right. “I’m not hiding what you think. It’s a good thing Wanda!” None of what I say seems to be getting through to her. “Why the fuck can’t you just admit it, if you didn’t do anything then just tell me what you were doing there!” I can feel the tears starting to form in my eyes but I hold them back. “I can’t Wanda please can’t you just believe me! I’m not like him!” Her face went bitter, all the faith and trust she might have had in me is obviously far gone. “You are exactly like him! You are a liar, a cheater, and a heartless asshole!” I feel one or two tears stream down my face. “Y-you don’t mean that.” She takes a step closer to me, her voice as cold as ice. “I hate everything about you. I don’t know why I even love you.”
I stand here, still, I try to take in everything she just said. All of the thoughts rushing through my head. She hates me? She can’t be serious. I grip my keys tightly in my pocket. “Is that really how you feel?” I can hear the quiver in my own voice. “It’s what I just said is it not?” I nod and whisper a weak okay, I turn around and walk straight out the door. “What? So you’re just gonna leave now?” I am surprised by the hint of fear in her otherwise antagonizing voice. I decide not to answer her as right now I don’t think I could speak even if I tried.
I walk to my car and get in without a word being said. I put on my seat belt and start the car. I see Wanda watching me from the door but not daring to stop me. I pull out of the drive way and take off down our road. After about five minutes I allow the tears to start gently streaming from my eyes. As I continue to drive I allow myself to think of all the memories me and her have shared the last eight years. Did it all mean nothing to her? Did I mean nothing to her? I know she wouldn’t do this to me in her right mind, it isn’t who she is. But I also know that her fears are easily influenced. I know I’d do anything to get her to believe me. I’ll even let her go through my phone if she needs she has my pass code. All I know is that I need to sort things out with her and go home. It’s been about thirty minutes since I had left so she’s probably calmed down my now.
I turn the car around and start to make my way home. I need to sort this out, I need us to work. I notice all the cars flying down the road past me. Street races are very common around here especially at night when very few cars are still out. I notice suddenly that a pair of high beams are swerving between lanes. I move my car as far over as I can without being off the road. I really hate drunk driver they are so fucking careless. All of the sudden they are fully in my lane coming straight at me. Everything seems to be going to fast for me to fully react. I turn my wheel to try and get into the other lane before he rams into me head on. I am not even half way across the lanes when he speeds up faster and crashes into my drivers side door. I can feel the care flip back as I try to hold on to anything I can. It lands upright on the road between lanes. I open my eyes and see everything spinning around me. I feel something warm running down and dripping off my face. I try to look at my surroundings but everything is far to blurry for me to see. I can faintly hear people shouting and talking but it’s so distant I can’t figure out what they are saying. I try to reach down to undo my seat belt but the door is to smashed in for me to even reach it. I reach over to my glove box, feeling myself getting more and more dizzy. I open it up and try to feel around for the picture but instead I feel a box. I check to see what it is and grip it tightly while trying to find the picture. Once I find it I hold them both tightly in my hand. I hear loud sirens but before I can look to see, my eyes close once more.
The next thing I can hear is a woman’s voice. “Can you hear me?” The voice asks, all I can let out is a groan, I open my eyes only to be blinded by flashing lights. I feel myself being lifted up and then hear car doors slamming shut. I look around and notice that I am in an ambulance. “Ma’am can you tell me your name?” I nod a little before speaking. “Y/n.” I let out in a weak voice. She nods and moves around me to start connecting me to various machines in the vehicle. “Good, now I need you to stay awake for me, we are taking you to the hospital. I attempt to sit up but I am met with a sharp jolt of pain followed by the woman’s arm stopping me. I feel the items still in my hand and look over to her. “Wanda.” She looks back at me confused so I clarify. “I want Wanda.” She nods and tells me that she will be there but I need to stay awake. I nod but feel my eyes continue to grow heavy and they close again.
Wanda’s POV
As soon as Y/n leaves I sink to the floor in both frustration and sadness. What the fuck is wrong with me? Why did I do that? I can’t believe I let my insecurities get the best of me yet again. I bring my knees up to my chest and let my tears fall freely. I don’t know why I said any of it, I love her more than anything I can’t lose her. But if I do there’s only myself to blame. After sitting here for a while trying to consider what I should do. I need to call Natasha, she will know if I can fix this. She is always honest with me when I fuck up.
I pull out my phone and dial her, it rings twice and she answers. “Wanda?” She seems tired and confused. “I messed up really bad.” I hear her sigh and shuffling before she answers. “God Wanda. What did you do to her now?” I often go to Natasha for advice or to inform her of our latest fight because she is Y/n’s safe space. I explain to her everything that I had said and told her that Y/n left. Before she gets to say anything she tells me to hang on and hangs up. About five minutes later Nat comes back and seems in a rush for something. “Wanda, we need to get to the hospital now. Y/n’s there, I’ll meet you there. And with that she hangs up. My mind starts racing and my breathing becomes rapid. Natasha has always been her emergency contact but I wish they would have called me so I could at least know if she’s okay. I grab my keys and run out of the house straight to my car. The whole time I’m driving I can’t stop thinking about what could have happened. And all the possibilities rush through my head making me more and more worried. Natasha lives close so I know she’ll get there first, so I know Y/n won’t be alone.
As soon as I park in the lot I rush inside to the front desk. Sitting there is a man in semi-formal clothes. “I’m here to see Y/n Y/l/n.” He looks up at me and nods his head while typing something into his computer. “I’m sorry ma’am, she’s been put under specific clearance visitor list by the agency SHIELD.” I let out a frustrated groan knowing that must mean Nick and Maria are here. “Okay listen I work with SHIELD, I’m not an agent but an avenger and that is my partner in there I need to know her room number.” He looks up at me and raises an eyebrow before looking down again. “I’m sorry but like I said no visitors.” I sigh, closing my eyes to focus. I sort through his mind to find the room number and once I get it I run up the stairs and to her room. As I get closer I notice that Natasha, Maria, and Fury are all talking outside the room. I walk right past them and into her room.
I immediately see her lying on the bed she looks to be in really bad shape. She is hooked up to many machines that fill the silence of the room with their noise. She is covered and scratches, cuts, and bruises. Parts of her skin are stained red from blood. She looks up to me and smiles, but as soon as she sees the tears on my face her smile turns into a bit of a frown. “Why are you crying?” Her voice is quiet and weak. “I’m sorry baby, I’m so so sorry.” I muffle a sob as I rest my head on the top of hers. She grips my hand and speaks to me calmly and sweetly. “No baby, no don’t be sorry, I’m okay, we’ll be okay.” She speaks as though she has no fear of death. She has always only cared about us. “But I am sorry, for everything. I never ever meant to hurt you I was just scared. I love you so so much I don’t want to lose you.” She can tell I’m getting worked up so she grabs my hand and squeezes it. One. Four. Three. I love you. It’s always been her way of quietly telling me. I try to take deep breaths but it isn’t working. She brings my hand closer to her and flips it over. I feel her place a piece of paper, and a box into my hand and closes it. “I love you Wanda.” I hold her close as I let my tears silently fall.
I want to be able to hold her close forever, keep her here forever. But apparently that can’t happen. I am interrupted from our moment by the flattening noise of her heart machine. I step back and look at her. This can’t be possible, she can’t die, she can’t. My vision blurs as three doctors rush into the room. Two go straight to Y/n and the other rushes me out. I am forced to stand out in the hall while the doctors work. I look down into the items in my hand. One is a photo, it’s of me and her on a trip we took two years ago. She was on my back with her arms in the air and I was holding her legs looking up at her. I look at the box next and I open it up. My eyes widen at the beautiful ring in the box. There are four green gems across a thick band. It shines nicely in the purple velvet lined box. It is a simple yet beautiful design. Just how I like.
Once I look up from the box I notice everything has settled down. The door to her room is closed and the doctor is talking to Natasha who has a single tear falling down her cheek. Once he walks away she turns to me with the coldest look I have ever received. “This is your fucking fault.” She takes a step closer. “The past eight years she has done everything for you! She has dealt with your shit time and time again because she loved you. But you just kept breaking her! She never did a single thing wrong and yet you blamed her for everything! I’m not one to wish death upon people but it sure as fuck shouldn’t have been her.” I see two more tears fall from her eyes before she turns and walks away. The other two follow behind her without a word.
She’s right though, the love of my life is dead. And it’s my fault.

Cam
inspo: a sexy friend of mine gave me this idea thanks beautiful 💋
Summary: One day, Matt stumbled upon a cam girl while mindlessly scrolling the internet. He can’t help but be intrigued and start desiring her. What happens when Matt meets this girl he’s been getting off to?
Tumblr media
❀i ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀
y/n’s POV
I adjust my bra strap and look in the mirror again before going live. I set up the ring light and sit in front of the camera before I hit the ‘LIVE’ button. “Fuck, something’s off,” I tell myself. I take my bra off and throw it on my bed. I looked through my closet and found a bra with red heart-shaped cups. I smile, satisfied with my outfit, and sit down. “Pfft, okay.”
I click the ‘LIVE’ button and immediately, the view count goes up by the hundreds. “Hi, guys!” I wave my hand. I turn on the TV to play music in the background so it’s not awkward and we can all get in the mood. “So what are we in the mood for tonight, hmm?” I cross my legs and read the comments.
‘Take your top off’
‘Turn around, beautiful’
‘Dance for us’
‘spread your legs’
One of the usernames caught my attention. It was someone who I hadn’t seen in my streams before. @/mattbern He sent me a hundred. “Wow, a hundred already? Thanks, baby, just for you tell me what you wanna see?” I lean in closer to my laptop to read more comments. It’s been a few minutes, and he hasn’t said anything. “Okay, our first-timer is a little shy, so I’ll do a majority vote.” I set up a poll that has two options. ‘Dance’ or ‘Tease’ Votes immediately come rolling in. “Okay, tease, it is.”
I turn around to show my red panties and use the hem of it to pull it down slowly. Before it shows anything, I lift them back up. I bend down to pull out my basket of sex toys. I pick a pink vibrator and sit down on my chair. I spread my legs so everyone can get a good view. I use my hand to touch up against my thighs but not giving myself the attention I need. I take my ring and middle finger and start sliding my fingers against my clothed cunt. I can feel myself getting wetter by the touch.
I take the vibrator and turn it to the lowest setting. I start on my inner thighs before lightly grazing it on my panties. I close my eyes and smile feeling how good the sensation is. I decided since the new guy spent so much money and didn’t give a request i’ll give him something to work with. I click the button for the second setting which is more intense but still not enough to make me cum or anything. I tease my clit with it and throw my head back. “Oh fuck, matt” I turn the vibrator off after a few seconds and go back to my screen.
‘No fair i’ve never had my name moaned’
‘He’s a lucky guy’
I can’t help but laugh at the replies. Money starts rolling in and so do requests.
Hours later
I have my head thrown back and my chest is fully exposed. “Okay guys I think that’s enough for tonight.” I wipe the sweat off my forehead and reach for a random shirt to put on. “Thank you guys for joining this was so fun,” I blow a kiss to the camera and turn off the live. Before I get the chance to exit out the site a message pops up. @/mattbern
‘hi sorry i’m new to all this I wasn’t sure what to request.”
Matt’s POV
I send the message not expecting her to reply. The live stream has thousands of viewers. I look down at the mess I made on myself. “Fuck,” I get up go get a towel to wipe myself off when I hear a notification. I run walk back to my laptop and see her message.
‘no problem, sweetheart we all start somewhere. did you enjoy the stream?”
I bite my lip, not sure how to respond. God I sounded pathetic with the first text. ‘Yeah, I’ve never seen anything like it’ What the fuck am I saying. A couple of minutes go by, and she responds. I hope to see you in future streams;) Have a good night.” I smile at the message and reply quickly, ‘Goodnight,’ before shutting my laptop off. A part of me feels guilty for watching a random girl get herself off online. A sick part of me can’t wait to do it again.
❀ ❀ ❀
it’s been a couple of hours of me tossing and turning and I can’t get myself to sleep. I sigh out of frustration and sit up. I reach for my laptop and go back to the site i was on hours ago. I click her username @/theywanty/n. To my surprise she’s active. I hover over the message button debating on texting her.
After going back and forth with myself I click and start typing. ‘How much for a phone call?’ It takes a while for her to respond making me start regretting the question. ‘130’
I send her the money and see the call come up. “What no camera?” I clear my throat. “Not this time.” Her voice is sultry and inviting. "No camera today, just voice. What do you want to talk about?" I can hear the smile in her voice and I blush furiously, glad she can't see me. "Uh... I don't know. Whatever you want."
“Did you like the stream?”I smile thinking about her moaning my name. "It was interesting. I've never watched anything like that before." I admit, my voice barely above a whisper. "But I couldn't stop thinking about it. About you." I hear her chuckle softly on the other end of the line. “I noticed you didn’t make a request after you sent the money. Were you shy?”
"I... I was. I didn't know what to ask for. But.. I liked watching you touch yourself." I say, my voice getting bolder as I talk to her. "It made me hard." I admit. I hear her softy laugh. “Wow maybe you’re not as innocent as I thought.”
“I mean, I've never done anything like this before. But there's just something about you. I can't help myself." I say, my breathing hitching. "What are you wearing right now?" I ask boldly.
"I'm wearing a little black dress... and nothing else. I took off my bra and panties while we were talking." She whispers seductively into the phone. "Now can you touch yourself for me, Matt? Tell me how it feels..." I hesitate for a moment, but her voice is so commanding that I can't help but obey. I slowly move the waistband of my pajamas pants down, sliding my hand into my pants to wrap around my hard length. "It feels so good.” I whine into the phone.
“Does it? You sound so pretty, Matt.” I grunt, starting to stroke myself slowly as I listen to her words. "I need to hear your voice while I touch myself." I can feel my breath hitching in my throat as I imagine her hand moving beneath her dress. “Are you going to be a good boy and let me talk you through it?” I can’t hold back my moans "Yes, I'll be good. I'll listen to you," I whimper, my voice growing tighter as I get closer to the edge. "Please, talk to me... tell me what to do."
"Good boy," she coos approvingly. "Now, listen closely. I want you to slow down, Matt. Draw it out... make it last. Can you do that for me?" My eyes shut tightly "Y-yes... I'll try," I choke out, slowing my strokes to a torturously slow pace. The anticipation is killing me, but I don't want to disappoint her. "It's so hard... I want to come so bad." I whimper. I hear her moan through the phone. I know she’s getting off too.
“I can hear it in your voice, matt. You want to cum?” I hear the mock in her voice. "Y-yes... god, yes I wanna cum so fucking bad," I sob, my entire body trembling as I fight to hold back my orgasm. "Please... let me cum... I'll do anything” I beg, my voice cracking with desperation.
"Anything, huh? That's a dangerous promise to make, Matt." She chuckles darkly. "But I'll take you up on it. If you want to cum, you'll have to do something for me first." She pauses, letting the silence build. "Please... what do you want me to do?" I beg, my voice shaking as I try to hold back my release. "I'll do anything... just please... let me come for you." I'm pathetic, but I don't care.
"Just a little longer, Matt," she whispers seductively. "You're doing so well holding back for me, such a good boy" Her voice is like velvet, wrapping around me and drawing out my pleasure. “Can you beg for me?” she asks, her voice a soft purr. "Beg me to let you cum, Matt. Beg me to give you permission. Show me how much you need it."
My breath giving away how much control she has over me. “Please y/n i’m so close please let me cum for you.” I hear her laugh on the other side of the phone. “Okay baby cum for me.”My breath hitches, my entire body tensing up as I finally release. "Thank you Oh god, I'm coming." I gasp, my voice breaking as I finally find my release. I catch my breath wiping the sweat off my forehead. “You did so good for me, matt. I hope we can do this again soon.” I nod even though she can’t see me. “Me too y/n.” We say our goodbyes and hang up the phone.
Jesus Christ.
y/n’s POV a month later
I’m getting ready for a party I was invited to a few days ago. I met this girl at a bar, and we hit it off as friends. I told her about my job, and she was supportive. We even went shopping for more costumes and are talking about doing a stream together. I look down when I hear my phone ring, and the name ‘Mia’ pops up. I pick it up and listen to her turn down her music. “Hi babe, you ready?” I adjust my mini skirt and pat it down. “Yup.” I grab my bag and head downstairs. “Okay i’m outside.” she hangs up before I can respond.
I open the car door and get welcomed with the smell of liquor. “Fuck Mia, did you drink already?” I laugh and fake faint. She hits my shoulder. “Not yet. I brought us drinks to pre-game, but I spilled one when I hit a speed bump.” I turn around to see the seats are soaked. “Idiot.” I laugh at her. She pulls out two water bottles that looked like they’ve been crushed. “I got these though!” She turns up the music and passes me the drinks. “You can start if you want I can’t have any until I get to the house.”
I take a small sip and close the bottle so we can finish them together. “Whose party is it?” I turn to her. “My friend Chris. He’s really cute you know if I didn’t have a boyfriend…” I laugh and hit her shoulder “Mia you can’t say that!” I say laughing. “I’ll introduce you to him! You guys would be so cute together!” I shrug her off. She turns left and I see a lot of cars parked around a house. “Shit.” I whisper not believing how many people are there. “This is so gonna be so fun!” She parks the car and turns to me to grab the bottle i’m holding for her.
“Ready?” I nod twisting the cap off. We cheers and chug the bottle. “Ew! what is this?” I see her face and she’s confused. “Bitch you drank my bottle! I poured myself something stronger. Sorry mama I didn’t notice.” We laugh and head towards the house. We see a lot of people in the front yard sitting on the grass. We open the front door and see the lights are off but there are colorful LED lights keeping the room lit. “Mia!” I hear a boy shout. A boy with a sleeveless shirt that says ‘Pirate Girl’ on it comes over. “Chris! this is my friend y/n!” she introduces us.
She wasn’t lying he is fine. I look at him up and down admiring his build. “Hey gorgeous hope you have a good time. Let’s go get some drinks I’ll introduce you to my brothers too.” We follow closely behind him and I feel her elbow my shoulder. “He’s a triplet.” I roll my eyes not believing it. We get to the kitchen and I see a boy sitting down at the table on his phone. Chris goes up to him and calls his name. “Matthew! This is y/n.”
“Told you he’s a triplet.” His brother looks up at us and when he meets eyes with me his smile drops.
“Hi nice to meet you. I didn’t actually think he was a triplet.” He laughs nervously. But just nods. Did I do something wrong? “He’s shy.” Chris tells me. I just nod and follow chris to get some drinks. As Chris and I head into the kitchen, Matt hangs back, standing near the door and watching me through the open doorway. He looks a little out of place among the loud, laughing crowd, and his eyes keep drifting back to me. I’m sure I would’ve recognized him if I knew him. Something about him seems so familiar.
Matt watches as chris and I disappear into the kitchen, the sound of laughter and clinking glasses filtering out. I see him take a deep breath, looking like he’s mustering the courage to approach the kitchen door. He lingers in the doorway, his eyes flicking between mine and Chris. “Matt join us!” I pass him a red solo cup.
he freezes, his eyes meeting mine. I smile encouragingly, gesturing to the counter littered with shot glasses. He hesitates for a moment before slowly approaching, his hands shoved awkwardly into his pockets. "Oh, uh, no, that's okay."
Oh my god. His voice. It finally clicked as to why he felt so familiar. My eyes widen and I know he knows that I know him from somewhere. That’s why he was acting a certain way towards me. I can’t help but bite back a smile. “I’ll meet you guys later i’m gonna go to the bathroom.” Chris ignores him starting up a conversation with me. “Where the third clone?” I jokingly ask. He points behind me and I see another boy who looks like Matt. I nod trying to find an excuse to leave. “It was nice meeting you but I have to pee really bad i’ll catch up with you later!” I give him a side hug and go follow Matt.
I follow through a hallway and I see he entered a room and shut the door. I knock and let myself in. “Hi Matt.” Matt jumps slightly when he hears my voice. “…Hi” He scoots over motioning me to sit. “So you’re the mysterious man behind the screen?” Matt nods, his eyes wide with curiosity as he takes in my appearance. He's admitted to fantasizing about me for a while, and the reality is even more captivating than he imagined. “Y-yeah... that's me.” He clears his throat, trying to play it cool despite his racing heart.
I take in his appearance his blue eyes, he has sort of a tiredness look to him that’s really attractive. His messy brown hair. “You know you’re really cute, matt.” He smiles and looks down. “Thank you. It’s crazy seeing you after all those phone calls we had.” I see he’s playing with his necklace indicating that’s he’s nervous. I nod agreeing with what he says. “Am I making you nervous, Matt?” He looks at me as if I have some special power that can read his mind. “What? No.”
“You’re not?” Matt fidgets with his necklace again, betraying his nervousness despite his words. “Maybe a little. But it’s not a bad nervous. It’s more like... excited nervous.” He takes a deep breath, trying to steady himself. Our faces are inches apart. He looks at my lips and back up at my eyes. “Don’t be nervous, sweetheart I’ll take care of you.” I say barley above a whisper. He nods as he leans in closer. I decide to close the space in between us. His body relaxes as he leans into me further. I grab onto his hair pulling it slightly.
Matt lets out a low whimper, his body tensing slightly before melting into mine. His hands roam to my back. His body shivers as he feels my soft hands caress his face. I pull back from the kiss watching him blink dazedly, his chest heaving as he tries to catch his breath. “You want more?” He doesn’t hesitate to nod. His eyes filled with desire. “Yes please.” He leans in finding my lips again, more demanding this time.
I take my right hand brushing it on his crotch. Matt lets out a low groan as I cup him through his jeans, his body convulsing slightly at the sudden contact. He grinds his hips forward, seeking more of my touch. His breath hot against my lips. “Y/n” he moans. “What baby? what do you want?” His voice barely above a whisper. “Touch me, please” I bring his lips back into mine and smile against his lips. His body melting into mine as he kisses me back eagerly. He breaks the kiss, his hands moving to help me free him from his jeans. “Give me your hand.” He gives me his hand and I pull my underwear to the side so he can feel how wet I am.
He hesitantly touches me, his fingers slowly moving to part my folds. He lets out a low groan, his eyes filled with wonder. “Is this what I do to you?” I nod smiling at him. “Want to help me out?” He nods. Matt's shyness momentarily forgotten in his eagerness. He helps me push my skirt down, his hands shaking with anticipation. He looks up at me with wide, eager eyes. “W-what do I do now?” His voice is barely a whisper, his innocence endearing.
Matt allows me to guide his fingers, his breath catching in his throat as he feels my slick heat. He mimics the movements I show him, his touch tentative but growing more confident with each passing second. “Like this?” He asks, his voice husky with desire. I nod shutting my eyes. “Mhm like that you’re doing so good.” I praise
his confidence soaring. He continues to rub me with his fingers, his thumb gently pressing against my clit. He looks up at me, his eyes filled with adoration. “I love making you feel good, Y/n.” Matt's body stiffens as I wrap my hand around him, his head falling back as a low groan escapes him. His hips instinctively buck forward, seeking more of my touch. “Oh fuck..” he moans. “Lay down.” I say demanding. Matt immediately obeys, laying down on his back on the bed. He looks up at me with a mix of excitement and nervousness. I straddle his lap so now i’m sitting on top of him. “Is this okay?” He nods eagerly. His hands find his way to my hips. “Please let me feel all of you.”
I grab his hard cock and line it up against my dripping wet cunt. Matt's eyes roll to the back of his head as I sink down onto him, his fingers digging into my hips as he tries to hold back. He lets out a series of low moans, his body tensing beneath mine. “Fuck,” he pants. I give myself a moment to adjust to his size. “Fuck you’re big matt.” I rest my hand on his stomach as I start moving myself up and down his shaft.
Matt's breath hitches as I start to move, his hands gripping my hips tighter. He looks up at me in awe, his eyes dark with lust. “Yes just like that.” he moans, his hips starting to thrust up to meet my movements. I throw my head back in pleasure. “Fuck you feel so good,Matt. You’re doing so good for me just keep on doing that.” He bucks his hips forward hitting my G-spot “Fuck!” His face scrunches as he starts to get closer to his orgasm. When his faces scrunches his glasses move. I take off his glasses and put them on myself. “Y/n I’m gonna cum”
“Give me a second matt i’m almost there” I lead his hand to grope my tits feeling my stomach knot as his thumbs circle around my nipples. “Oh fuck I’m so close.” I tell him. I pick up my pace feeling the knot in my stomach become undone. “Cum for me, matt let me feel all of you.”
His face contorts with pleasure as he finds his release, his hands gripping my hips tightly. I can feel the warmth spread inside me, his breathing heavy. His thrusts become sloppier as we both finish. I catch my breath then slowly pull out and lay down. “Did you like that?” I ask him as I take off his glasses and put them back on him. He nods not being able to speak. I laugh as I get up and put my clothes back on. “It was nice meeting you.” I say before I open and shut his door, heading downstairs.

✦ ✦ ✦
November 1994
It’s a couple days later. A Tuesday. Arguably the worst day of the week and a day that he’s been dreading since the text had graced his flip phone that night.
“... we need to talk”??
It sent shivers down his spine, made him want to run and hide, and never leave his apartment again. Talking wasn’t really Joel’s strong suit– sure, he could sweet talk Mrs. Nelson into giving him a better tip, but talking about how he felt? God, it was like dragging his toddler around a store when she wanted to go home– frustrating and near-impossible.
You’d texted him afterwards, making plans to meet at the diner when his shift was almost over to talk. But the past two days had been an absolute blur.
Sarah had noticed her dad’s change in demeanor and had decided to follow him into it, nonstop crying and small fists banging on the floor and his chest and anything she could take her anger out on. It made sleeping borderline impossible. He has had to sit in her small bed with her laying on his chest until she wore herself out the past two nights.
But here he is, at his usual Tuesday shift just after the lunch crowd has dispersed and he’s hiding in the kitchen while Don gives him a lecture about something that he’s honestly not listening to. He does, however, catch the sound of the bell ringing as someone walks into the diner and then he hears your cheery voice as you speak to someone.
“Go out there, there’s a customer,” Don says as he cleans the grill.
“I–” He cuts himself off. He doesn’t want Don to know about what’s about to happen.
The burly man looks up at him, nearly a foot shorter than him and he still scares the crap out of him sometimes, “It’s your girl, isn’t it?”
Joel clears his throat and sighs, “Yeah.”
“You two been fighting?”
He shakes his head.
Don slices his hand through the air as if to push Joel’s gesture aside. “Bullshit. I can tell.”
“Wha–”
“You been actin’ different. I’ve known you almost four years, Miller. I could tell when you started datin’ her and I could tell yesterday when you came into work that something was wrong.”
Damn Don and his out-of-character perceptiveness.
“Go face her, Miller.” He nods once, a finality to it.
“I-”
“Get out of my kitchen, you coward!”
He pushes him out of the swinging doors and into the dining area. When he sees you, he freezes.
✦ ✦ ✦
You arrive at the diner at three and sit in your usual spot by the window that no one else likes but you. It’s bright. You think maybe that’s why no one likes it, but you adore the way the reflected light warms you down to your toes. It’s quiet– weirdly quiet, like even the building itself is getting ready in anticipation for whatever is about to happen. The only other patron is Mr. Cassini sitting in a corner with a cup of coffee cradled in his trembling hands. You wonder where Doreen is.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Cassini,” you yell across the diner.
His face lights up, like it always does when he sees you, “Hello, dear! How are you doin’?”
“Oh, I’m doing as good as I can. How about you?”
“Oh darlin’, I’m doing amazing. Best I’ve felt in years.”
You smile at him, “That’s amazing, Mr. Cassini.”
“Oh, look at me talkin’ you up when you probably have work to do. I’ll let you get to your studying.”
You huff, “Thanks, Mr. Cassini.”
You can hear clattering coming from the kitchen. You suppose that’s where Joel is, or where he’s hiding. You’d tried to get a grasp on how Joel was feeling about all of this when you had been texting him to make the plans to meet here after his shift. Text messages aren’t very good at communicating emotion, but you couldn’t get yourself to call him– face him.
“Get out of my kitchen, you coward,” you hear Don yell in his obnoxiously loud way, a deep chortle following Joel as he exits the swinging doors.
He freezes like a statue, eyes wide and brows raised. Tired is the word that comes to mind– he so obviously hasn’t slept right in days. Bags under his eyes, shoulders slouched, skin paler than his usual tan glow. Maybe he’d seen a ghost.
He looks at you with his evaluating stare. You always wonder what Joel sees when he does this. Does he know how terrified you are?
Turning around, he points a finger towards the counter and grabs a clean glass from the cabinet behind him. You sigh, sling your backpack over your shoulder, and get up to go sit where Joel directed you to. He likes it when you’re closer to him while you visit him at work, especially if it’s slow and he’s bored, but when you need to study or do homework, you sit at the booth by the window– less distractions, you tell him. Really, you just know you won’t get any work done if you have easy access to him and you like the noise of the diner while you’re studying.
He doesn’t turn back towards you until you’re already settled in the tall stool, backpack precariously balanced on the seat next to you. Sliding the glass across the counter towards you, now full of iced tea exactly how you like it, he sighs.
“Hey, sugar.”
His nervousness surrounds him– hand pulling through his sweaty, messy hair, lidded eyes darting around the diner in an effort to find something to distract himself with, teeth worrying his bleeding lower lip between them.
“Hey,” you breathe out. In a way, his nerves comfort you– you’re not the only one.
“I got another few minutes before Don will let me out.”
“I know, Joel,” you mutter.
“Gotta wait for Dorreen to come back from her smoke break too.”
“Okay,” you whisper.
He leans on the counter, facing you, “I’m nervous.”
You give him a soft smile, “Me too.”
“Good. Good.” He nods to himself, pushing a straw towards you from the apron around his waist.
“Miller! I need more coffee,” Mr. Cassini’s gravely voice echoes through the empty diner, making Joel jump up from his position on the counter.
“One second, Mr. Cassini–” he holds up a finger directed at you– “I’ll be right back. Gotta do a couple things before I leave.”
You know. You nod.
You pull a book out of your bag, The Secret Garden, desperate to avoid the awkwardness of the quiet. You absorb yourself in the story of Mary as she explores the hidden garden her new caretaker’s late wife once walked, dead and gray. It’s the millionth time you’ve read it– page corners bent and the spine cracked in multiple places. The pages are a dark yellow, almost matching the deep color of the faded cover. On the front page, the name Virginia swirls in a beautiful cursive right above your own name in your not-so-delicate print. The ink of her fountain pen is a deeper black than the one of your ball-point, faded by the twelve years it had sat on the page.
A hand pops into your field of vision and taps on the page of your book, “Ready to go.”
You hum and stash the book into your bag, between your hardback textbooks so it gets better protection from the mess that is your bookbag.
You watch Joel pull his apron off and stuff it under the counter, exposing the parts of his jeans that have gone untouched by the mess of his shift. The square outline around his crotch almost makes you giggle, but you bite your lip to suppress it.
He comes around the counter and, without looking in your direction, pushes open the front door. Following behind him like a puppy, you quickly do the same, throwing your backpack over your shoulder.
He stops suddenly, turning around, looking for guidance.
You sigh, “Let me walk you home.”
“No–”
“What direction is it?”
He looks you up and down, a habit you guess he learned from trying to determine if he needed to make Tommy back down from a fight or not. His hesitation is so blatant, bringing his hand up once, twice, before he points in the opposite direction from the route he takes to walk you back to your dorm. Of course, he was going out of his way to bring you home. That is the most Joel thing you could think of.
“Let’s go.”
You start to walk, determined steps taking you down the street. You turn to look at Joel over your shoulder and he hasn’t moved an inch. Your footsteps falter.
“Really?”
He huffs out a breath, “I– I just–”
You shrug your arms up, exasperated, and slap them back against your sides, “What, Joel?”
“I don’t… I’m not ready to do this yet.”
What?
You furrow your brows and squint in his direction through the waning sunlight.
“What in the world are you talking about?”
He runs a hand through his curly, sweaty hair, sucks in a large breath, and slurs his words together in one long exhale, “I’m not ready for you to meet her yet.”
Oh. Oh.
“Joel, that’s not– that’s not what I was trying to do. I just wanted to walk you home.”
Now that he’s admitted his secret to you, that other part of him no longer hidden, everything about him is so obviously catered to a four-year-old. His expressions are controlled, but also so kind and open, like he’s keeping his real feelings at bay but wants to make sure you know that you can tell him anything and he’ll listen. His shoulders are hunched over from hard work, but he never falters, he always shows up for you, for Sarah. He’s nervous in everything he does, whether he shows it or not, but he would do anything to make sure his friends and family get whatever they need. He’d fight a bull for you if you asked him to. He’d tear the earth in two for his baby, you can tell.
This is the same Joel you’ve come to like. He hasn’t changed into a whole new person just because you learned he’s a father. He was a father the whole time you’ve known him, which is weird to think about. What else didn’t you know about him?
You continue, dragging your feet back to him, “I would never, ever try to force you into anything– especially when it comes to your daughter. I have no right to demand anything.”
“I do want you to meet ‘er.”
“I want to meet her too.”
“Someday. I jus’… not now. I need to make sure we– I wanna make sure we’ll last before I introduce someone else into her life.”
“And I agree with you.”
“Good.”
“Yup.” You kick a rock in front of you.
You both stare at each other, waiting to see who will break the silence first.
Joel tilts his head in the direction he had originally pointed in, “Can we go somewhere to talk?”
You nod.
The two of you walk in silence to a park down the road. You wonder if his apartment is near.
There are a few benches scattered around the park, surrounded by flowers and shrubs alike. A playground is busy with children as they scream and chase after each other with smiles on their faces.
He flops down on a bench facing a water fountain, far enough from the kids that you’re pretty sure they won’t hear you.
You sigh, pressing your palms into your eyes as you join him, small flakes of wood on the old bench press into the backs of your thighs.
“I’m upset that you didn’t tell me right away– I just want you to know that.”
“I know. I’m sorry.”
Apologizing is good. An explanation would be better.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
He crosses his arms, staring out at the glaring sun, “‘Cause I didn’ want you to run.”
You scoff and scuff the concrete beneath you with your sneaker in emphasis, “What makes you think I would’ve run?”
His eyes dart over to you. He gives you a look that screams, “Are you seriously asking me that?” Eyebrows furrowed and nose scrunched.
“‘Could tell you were nervous when I first met ya. And I knew you were young and in college and most college-aged girls aren’t interested in gettin’ in a relationship with a dad.”
“Oh, I know for a fact that that is not true,” you huff, mirroring his position– slouched, arms crossed. You knew plenty of women your age who would love the stability and the experience– knew Elaine had had a few chance encounters with DILFs she had met at the bar. She claimed it was some of the best sex she’d ever had.
He scoffs, “Whatever, you know what I mean.”
You roll your eyes, “Yeah, I do.”
Rubbing his hands together, he continues.
“I wasn’t tryin’ to keep her from you forever. I was always going to tell you.”
You flatten your lips into a line. “Yeah, well, it would’ve been nice to know from the get-go.”
He’s looking you in the eye again with a genuinity and softness and places a hand on your thigh. “I’m sorry. I don’t think I’ll stop apologizing for that for a long time. I just– it seemed like the right thing to do at the time.”
You sigh, placing your hand on top of his, a smirk starting to take over your lips, “I’m not going to say it’s okay, but I might be willing to forgive you.”
His eyebrows quirk up, “Might be?”
You fix your posture, now sitting taller than him, and look down into his pretty eyes, “You take me out again and I might be willing to look past this indiscretion.”
He opens his mouth to speak again, but you interrupt before he gets the chance, pointing a defiant finger in his face– “But–! You have to promise me you won’t keep shit from me anymore. We gotta lay it all on the table. I’m not going to do this with you unless you’re honest with me.”
He nods, “I think I can do that– both of those.”
You nod, “Good, I’m glad we’re on the same page.”
He fixes his slouch so that he’s level with you again, his hand never leaving the comfort of your own.
“But, y’know that means you have to be honest with me too.”
You furrow your eyebrows.
Turning his hand so your palms face each other, he laces your fingers together and squeezes. “I know you’re hiding stuff from me too. Big stuff.”
You hum.
“Why won’t you talk about your family?”
Well, shit.
You sigh, squeezing your eyes shut, “Oh.”
“Yeah, ‘oh’... but we don’t have to do this right now.” His eyes are wide with fear, scared he might have pushed you too hard. Maybe he has. But, it’s weird, for the first time in your entire life, you want to share things about your past.
“No, it’s okay. Might as well,” you reply, taking your hand out of his and rubbing your eyes aggressively with your palms.
Without looking up at him, you start, “I– I don’t really have much family. It’s just pretty much been me and my dad since I can remember.”
“You said your dad lives back in Seattle, right?”
“Yeah. He uh– he isn’t my favorite person. That’s why– that’s why I don’t talk about him.”
He doesn’t say anything, giving you time to think about what you’re going to say next.
“My mom died a couple weeks after she gave birth to me. She– she, uh–”
It’s hard to spit it out. To talk about it. Only a few people knew about what really happened– the rest all just knew she was dead. But you know that Joel should know– know why this is so hard for you.
“She had postpartum depression really, really bad. Couldn’t get out of bed, couldn’t shower, couldn’t eat, couldn’t feed me or hold me or look at me– Dad says she was like a statue, like a ghost of herself.”
You can’t get yourself to look at him– can feel the guilt running down your spine and into your bone marrow like it always does when you think of her. You hide your face behind your hands, elbows leaning on your legs.
“She had been so excited. They both were. Just out of college and newlyweds– dad says her pregnancy was the best year of their relationship.”
You gear yourself up for what you’re about to say. You’ve only ever told one person about this before: Elaine, and that was after a year of friendship. You’ve only known Joel for a little over a month. But, you want to tell him– need to tell him.
“But she– she killed herself. Didn’t leave a note or anything, she was just… gone.”
You can’t see his face, don’t want to. You’ve seen enough sympathetic eyes to last a lifetime of grief. “Oh, sugar…”
You shake your head in your hands– you’re not done yet. “Dad was pretty much gone after that. I never remember a time when he was ‘there’, but my grandmother said he used to be different– ‘more alive’.
“I knew he blamed me before he ever said it. He’d drop me off at my grandmother’s house and disappear for days and when she died and that wasn’t an option anymore, he would just leave me at the house with a ten dollar bill for food for a couple days at a time.”
He scoffs, like  your father could hear his anger from here. “That’s not fair–”
You cut him off, you don’t want to hear one more person say your life isn’t fair, “And when he was home, he was angry all the time. He has his good days, but he– he’s not my favorite person.
“So, that’s why I was scared when you told me about Sarah,” you continue, “Because I– I don’t exactly have a good track record with the whole ‘family’ thing. And I don’t… I don’t really know anything about being a… maternal figure.”
You can’t say “mom”. Can’t think it.
It takes a moment of stunned silence for Joel to reply, but when he does, he lays a hand on your shoulder, “Baby, I… I wasn’t askin’ for you to jump into being a mother. I wasn’t… I wasn’t even asking you to be a mother at all. I just wanted you to know my priorities, because if this relationship is gonna continue, you have to have a relationship with my daughter.”
“I know.”
“But, I understand now. Thank you for tellin’ me about your mom.”
You sigh, closing your eyes and leaning your head back on the bench, “Thank you for listening and being patient with me.”
You can feel him looking at you, hear the smile in his words. “I’d wait forever for you, sugar.”
Your cheeks heat up, eyes wide open, and turn to him. The look in his irises tells you that he’s being completely genuine.
“Anyways, I gotta go. I’m not tryin’ to get away from you or this conversation, but my momma has to get home.”
You nod your acknowledgement, standing up. He holds a hand out for you to take and you pull him up from the bench, but you don’t let go– you guide him towards the exit of the park and then he takes the reins from there, leading you in the direction of his apartment.
“Your mom watch her when you’re at work?”
“Yeah, Tommy does too sometimes when he’s not gettin’ his ass beat in alleyways after school,” he rolls his eyes.
You huff out a breath of amusement, “Well, that’s very kind of them.”
You squeeze his hand. It’s calloused from hard work and dry from the hot Texas weather. His larger fingers engulf yours.
“Tell me about her.”
He starts to shake his head, “Oh, we don’t–”
“No, no, I want to know about her.”
He’ll always take an opportunity to brag about his baby girl.
In the few minutes walk, he tells you about Sarah. How she turns five in July. How she smiles with her teeth, showing off her two front teeth that they just pulled. How he very unsuccessfully pulled a Tooth Fairy heist, which resulted in him having to admit to his daughter that the Tooth Fairy wasn’t real. How she looks just like her mom, but is just so beautifully unique in her own way. How her hair never cooperates with him, so he has to take her to the salon down the street so they can braid her hair. How she likes pink the most and requests the same pink butterfly hair clips every morning despite the large collection of hair accessories she’s amassed. How he loves her with everything in him.
You arrive at your destination, or at least you think so, as you approach a small bakery and Joel takes out his key.
“I rent the apartment above the bakery from the owner. She has a house with kids and a husband so she doesn’t need to stay here, and she’s an old family friend, so she lets Sarah and I stay up here for fairly cheap.”
You smile, “That’s very kind.”
“Yes, but she loves to come visit way more than she’s actually welcomed. She likes Sarah a lot, I mean, most people do because she’s a great kid, but y’know…”
He suddenly perks up, holding his hands up in a “stop” motion.
“Wait– stay here.”
You watch him run up the stairs two at a time, before the door closes behind him. You stay in your spot.
He comes back down the stairs with his seashell in his hand– the gray one with the brown stripes, the one he had so proudly presented to you two days ago on the beach. The one he told you was simple, didn’t need to be flashy to get the job done. The one that was so obviously him that it hurt to think about the last couple of days of avoiding him, of the time wasted.
You cradle it in your palms and look up at him through your eyelashes.
“I’m sorry,” you mutter.
“For what, sugar?”
“For making you think I didn’t want you.”
He sighs, grabbing your wrists and pulling you into his chest, wrapping his arms around your shoulders.
“Don’t be sorry– wasn’t your fault. I got lots of things to work on, and so do you. We jus’ need to communicate better, like you said.”
You nuzzle your head into his chest. He smells like leather and freshly-cut wood.
He feels like home.
“Yeah, we do.”

December 1994
It’s the middle of December when your 21st birthday rolls around.
Elaine throws a party in the basement of your dorm building, approved by your RA as a “floor event” for the end of the semester (which in a way isn’t a lie because most of your dorm floor is there anyways) the day before your birthday. You had convinced Joel to come too, all of your friends swooning over him and winking at you when you introduced them to him. He’s blushing the entire night.
But on your actual birthday, Joel takes you to his apartment for the first time, dropping Sarah off at his mom’s house for the night.
When you first walked in, you think that even if you hadn’t known this was Joel’s apartment, that you could’ve easily picked it out in a lineup. The ceilings are vaulted, popcorn textured walls that are painted an off-white that makes the space look larger than it is, a kitchen off to the right and a bedroom door straight ahead. There’s a painting of horses that Joel has described to you before above the mantle in the living room, it was his dad’s. You can tell he’s cleaned up, because all of the pink toys that he told you were usually scattered all over the floor for him to stub his toe on, which he did constantly, are neatly piled in a basket in the corner of the room. The couch is old, sagging in the middle, but it looks comfortable because of all of the quilts thrown all over the back.
After a dinner of your favorite food, which Joel painstakingly made to perfection, he guides you to the living room couch and hands you a present.
It’s a big cardboard box with a purple bow stuck on top. Before you can even think about opening it, he takes the bow off and puts it on top of your head.
“It’s for your birthday and Christmas ‘cause it’s a pretty expensive gift, and y’know I don’t make a whole lot at the diner, but I think it was worth it.”
You open the box with a smile and what sits waiting for you is a pair of cowboy boots. And they are beautiful.
They’re made of a thick leather that feels smooth beneath your fingers as you pick them up and cradle one of them in your hands. It’s heavy in your grip, sturdy and obviously well-made– stitches tight and leather buffed. The sides are a light purple with white sprigs of lavender stitched into the leather.
“They’re work boots, so they're steel-toed and waterproof. I treated the leather already, but you can bring ‘em to me every couple months and I’ll do it again. Figure that you needed shoes that weren’t your half-destroyed Converse and I love my boots, so I thought, you know, maybe you’d like a pair too,” he chuckles stiffly, carding a hand through his hair.
You’re speechless, to the point that you can’t even point out that he had implied a future two months from now where you’re still dating. There’s about a hundred words you want to say to him, but none of them seem good enough.
Gently placing the boot back in the box and on the floor, you stand up and move in front of Joel and in-between his thighs. He’s looking up at you with wide eyes and you want to devour him whole.
“What’re you doin’, sugar?”
You climb into his lap and smirk down at him, “Lookin’ at ya.”
He grabs the outsides of your thighs and squeezes them, “Oh, really?”
“Yup,” you pop the ‘p’ with a smirk, throwing your arms around his neck. Pushing yourself further into his lap, your nose brushes against his.
If someone asked you what your favorite thing about Joel was, you would tell them that it’s his eyes. Those defined crows feet that kiss the corners of his gorgeous honey-brown irises are enchanting– evidence of a life, so far, well-lived.
You adore him. You–
“I love you.”
He pulls back slightly with wide eyes.
“I– sugar, you don’t have to say it if you’re not ready.”
That’s so like Joel– to think he doesn’t deserve this.
You weave your fingers into the curls that stick to the back of his neck and your smirk turns into a smile, “I’m ready and I love you.”
You nudge his nose with your own and lean in, lips connecting in a simple peck.
“I love you too– so much, sugar,” he whispers, pressing your lips together again.
“Thank you for the boots, Joel. They’re beautiful.”
“I hope it’s okay– gettin’ you one gift. I… you know I’m not exactly the richest person in the world.”
“Oh baby, is that why you’ve been picking up all those extra shifts with Tommy?”
“Yeah,” he draws out bashfully.
You kiss him again, “Miller, it is more than okay for you to give me one gift. In fact, it would’ve been okay if you hadn’t gotten me anything. Just you being here is enough for me.”
“Oh, really?”
He sighs, squeezing your thighs again, pulling you in closer until your chests touch. You can feel him beneath you. Your cheeks heat up.
“Mhm.”
It’s gentle, the way he lays you down on the bed, legs hanging off the edge. He stands between your shaking legs. Your body is buzzing with the electricity of the moment, as he looks down at you with hooded, black eyes– hungry and soft.
He takes his time kissing up your body, starting where your skin is exposed at the top of your pajama pants and making his way up, up, up, in between your heaving, clothed breasts, shirt long gone on the living room floor, and finally up to your lips. He pecks them once and sighs, arms bracketing your head.
He says your name sternly, “Are you sure you want to do this? Because you know, I am very okay with waitin’.”
You look up into those eyes, the ones you fell in love with first, and you know. You know this is what you need.
“Please,” you whine, hips stuttering under his.
He holds your hip down with his large, sturdy hand and speaks softly, “Baby, I need a yes or no.”
“Yes, yes! I’m ready, Joel, please.”
With all the energy you have left in your buzzing and needy limbs, you wrap your arms around his neck and pull him into a kiss that says all the shit that’s always left unsaid. You’re my other half, I don’t think I can live without you anymore, I am yours, You are mine.
And it’s gentle, because that’s who Joel is. A father, a caregiver, a lover– he is gentle. He takes care of you, loving you down to the tips of your fingers, taking his time to savor the taste of you. It’s not perfect– there’s both of your awkward giggles while Joel pulls the condom on and your hisses as he goes a little too fast– but, to you, it’s perfect in all the ways it matters and you’re seeing stars multiple times before Joel finally finishes with a loud and gorgeous moan.
After Joel wipes you both down with a warm washcloth, you’re laying in his arms, playing with the wispy, brown hair just below his cheekbones and he’s humming in delight like a cat purrs.
“I love you,” he whispers, eyes closed.
“I love you, too,” you whisper back, kissing his chest just above his heart where you wish you could burrow yourself forever. Moving out of this bed is tomorrow’s problem. Today, you can pretend that you’re nestled in his heart chambers as his breaths slow and he falls asleep with his arms wrapped around you in a tight embrace, like even in his sleep he has to keep you close enough to feel your breaths, make sure you’re still next to him.

March 1995
It’s not until three months later that Joel agrees that it’s time for you to meet Sarah. You’re not sure why it takes him so long to make that decision, but you try not to think about it too much or else you start to panic and you promised Joel that you would trust him more and this is one of those moments where you just need to tell your brain to ‘shut up’ and trust him. So, you trust him.
It’s a Friday evening. You pick him up from the diner and walk the short trip with your hands intertwined. You can feel the sweat pooling on his palms, despite the cool spring weather, but you don’t let go.
You’ve been to his apartment before, many times in fact, but it’s so different when it’s not just the two of you. Walking into high-pitched giggles and the low groan of the old stand mixer that usually sits dormant on Joel’s counter is odd, but it feels right– like this is how it’s always supposed to be.
Your heart is racing. He pulls you into the apartment and you see her for the first time.
Her light brown curls bounce, confined near her temples by the two butterfly clips in them, as she jumps up and down in her sparkly pink, plastic, princess heels that clack obnoxiously on the tiled floor of the kitchen. She’s wearing a pink, long-sleeved shirt– the red top of Elmo’s head just barely peeking out of the top of her jean overalls. Her tawny-brown, chubby cheeks are pulled taught by her unending smile. She looks just like the numerous pictures Joel has shown you with pride in his eyes, but now, in front of you, she is real.
And it doesn’t scare you. It excites you.
“Papi, is that you,” you hear a graveled, feminine voice cut through the static-filled radio that’s attached to the underside of the cabinet.
And now you’re scared.
Not only is Joel’s little girl in front of you, but so is his mother. Her dark brown hair, already graying at the roots despite her young age of forty-five, is pulled into a braid that runs all the way down to her lower back. She has a blue dress on with intricate white floral designs on the skirt, long and flowing. It moves gracefully as she glides around the kitchen. In a weird way, it is so obvious that Joel is her son.
Sarah’s eyes light up when she spots her dad, hands flying over her head.
“Daddy!”
Joel’s nervous demeanor is quickly discarded, leaving a smile in its wake.
“Guppy!”
She runs to her father, heels clacking and hair bouncing, and slams into his calves. Wrapping her arms around his legs, she squeezes with a grunt. All Joel does is chuckle at her violent affection.
From her position attached to her father’s legs, she turns her head towards you with her eyebrows crossed and a frown on her face, “Who’s that, Daddy?”
You sit on your calves to get down to her level and tell her your name with a smile, “It’s really nice to meet you.”
You’re good with kids. It’s why you wanted to be a teacher in the first place, besides the joy you got from sharing your knowledge. You used to babysit for your neighbors constantly (which was a good way to make money, but also an excuse to leave the house when your dad was having one of his really bad days). So, you should be good with Sarah. Right?
Joel nudges her off of him and kneels down to her level as well, “She’s my girlfriend.”
He doesn’t beat around the bush, doesn’t talk around it, because his little girl is smart and he wants to tell her the truth.
She looks you up and down suspiciously with her big brown eyes, “Girlfriend?”
“Yeah, baby. She’s my friend that I kiss sometimes.”
Her face scrunches up in disgust, “Ew!”
You copy her expression and whisper, “It is kinda gross sometimes.”
She looks you up and down with her eyebrows furrowed. For a second, you think she might be offended by you calling her father gross; based on what Joel has told you about her, you thought she would appreciate a joke at her dad’s expense, but maybe she didn’t when it came from someone she didn’t know–
Her face lights up and she starts to giggle, hands pulling at her father’s shirt.
“You’re gross, Daddy.”
He looks down at his clothes, covered in grease and sweat and laughs, “I guess I am.”
“I wonder how I can get clean,” he draws out, tapping his chin as if in deep thought. He scoops her up into his arms and starts to rub his face and hair, covered in grime from a long shift at the diner, all over her overalls.
She screeches, her laugh boiling over and filling the little living room. Her smile is radiant.
“Daddy, put me down!” She pushes at his shoulders with her tiny hands, which, of course, doesn’t move Joel an inch, but she continues pushing as hard as she can.
“But, you said I was gross! I’m just trying to fix it!”
“You’re makin’ me gross!”
“What?!”
She looks desperately over at you, grin taking over her chubby face, and reaches for you with the arm that isn’t restrained by Joel, “Help!”
“I’ll help you!” You stand up, grab her arm, and pull lightly, making sure not to hurt her.
“He’s too strong,” you cry out dramatically.
Her voice bounces as Joel jostles her around, “Ask him to stop! Politely!”
She adds “politely”, as if she’s repeating a mantra she’s held close to her heart. It’s endearing and it makes your heart ache for the kindness that Joel has taught and shown his daughter.
You oblige her. “Gross man, can you please let go of the princess?”
He stops suddenly, placing her down on the ground with a stomp of her feet. She prances away from him and over to you, hiding behind your legs.
“Anything for the Queen,” he salutes to you and looks at Sarah with sympathy in his eyes, “I’m sorry, Princess. I thought that you wanted me to get clean.”
She giggles again, wiping her hands down the bib of her overalls, “Daddy, you have to get clean in the shower!”
He throws his hands up in the air, “The shower?! Why didn’t you just say that?”
She copies her dad, throwing her hands up in the air, laughing still.
Turning to you, she curtsies, emulating lifting a skirt with her hands, “Thank you, kind lady for saving me. I’ll ‘emem- ‘emember this.”
She struggles with the word ‘remember’, nose scrunching as she knows she isn’t saying it right, but can’t quite get the syllables around her tongue.
“Anything for the Princess,” you curtsy back at her with your real dress.
Silent up to this point, Joel’s mom finally decides to put her two cents in.
“I like your boots, mija.”
You look down at your feet and see those gorgeous cowboy boots with the embroidered lavender sprigs and the lavender leather on the sides and you’re reminded how much Joel loves you– that this is a moment to celebrate, not to ruin with your overthinking. Joel adores his mother and Sarah– it is a privilege to meet these people.
“Oh, thank you, Mrs. Miller! Joel got them for me for my birthday.”
She smirks and winks at you, “I know, I helped him pick them out.”
She throws a towel over her shoulder and pops a tray in the oven. Joel and Sarah are talking behind you in soft voices. You can’t really make out what they’re saying, but you don’t really mind. Whatever made Sarah the most comfortable in this situation is good with you.
“Well, they’re beautiful. Thank you for helping him.”
Shutting the oven door with her hip, she pulls another tray from the counter and places it on top of the stove. She does all of this while making direct eye contact with you, like she is so familiar with the space that she could move around it with her eyes closed.
“I help papi with whatever he needs and he doesn’t know the first thing about what a girl likes– that’s why I buy all of Sarah’s clothes… and don’t call me Mrs. Miller– makes me feel older than I am. Call me Essie.”
Your face heats up, “Okay, Essie.”
“Momma–”
“You–” she points at Joel, stern look on her face– “are late.”
Joel looks so guilty, you almost think he’s killed someone. “I’m sorry, Momma. Don kept me later than usual.”
“Only reason I’m mad is that you took my time away from meeting your beautiful girl.” She walks up to you and hugs you.
Oh.
You stiffen, not because the hug is unwelcome, it is very welcome, but because you can’t remember the last time you’d been hugged by anyone but Elaine and Joel– by a mother.
And you can feel all the softness of a mother that you never got to have pour through her and to you. You know she knows about what happened to your mom; Joel tells his momma everything, but you hadn’t expected her to be this kind to you. Because you’re you, of course you had expected the worst, that she would hate you, tell you to get away from her son, tell you that you weren’t good enough, but here she is, showing you all the gentleness that she had taught her son to show others. You relax into it.
An embrace can say a thousand words, and you think this one says a thousand and one.
You can feel the heat on your face climbing further down and into your chest, straight to your heart.
“Sorry, Momma,” he mumbles.
She lets go of you and you feel the loss of her. You hope that she’ll show you her kindness again– you crave that affection.
“It’s okay–” she grabs your face and puts her forehead to yours– “You’re here now.”
Her dress swishes behind her as she returns to the kitchen to continue her cooking.
“Thomas is coming over,” she yells, her voice cracking slightly at the end with the effort.
Joel’s eyes go wide, “What?”
Sarah screeches, jumping up and down, which just seems to be her blanket response to excitement, “Uncle Tommy!”
Essie laughs, her whole face lighting up with the force of it, “Your brother wanted to meet your girl.”
You’ve heard lots of things about Tommy from Joel: how he gets regularly arrested for starting fights with people, how determined and head strong he was, how much he loved Sarah, and how massive of a flirt he was. At 17-years-old, Joel’s younger brother was a huge pain in his ass, but he loved him regardless.
“So he invited himself?”
She shakes her head, “No, toro, I invited him when I told him my plans for today before he went to school.”
“But–”
A knock on the door interrupts his protest. There’s the jingle of a key and then the door slams open with a kick.
“Hello, brother!”
Joel’s face falls into a blank stare, “Hello.”
Sarah, ever the aggressive greeter, runs to her uncle with a scream, “Tom-Tom!”
“Sarah,” he yells as he picks her up and spins her around in his arms. Her screeches turn into rambunctious laughter.
Tommy is a handsome young man. He has the same unruly brown curls that Joel does, but his are more structured and lay more securely on the top of his head, unlike Joel’s where it cascades down to his neck. Big, brown eyes and strong, dark eyebrows make him look more innocent than he actually is. He’s got a flannel and a stained wife-beater on.
“Nene, I told you to dress nicely,” Essie yells, leaning out on the entryway to the kitchen.
Tommy’s confident look quickly fades from his face, the same guilty look his brother had just sported taking over, “I’m sorry, Momma.”
She hums and goes back to the kitchen.
“Shit,” tumbles out of Tommy’s mouth.
“Sh–” Sarah starts to repeat, before Tommy claps a hand over her mouth. You can hear her giggling from behind his hand.
“Tommy!”
“Sorry, man, I didn’t mean to– ack, gross,” he exclaims as Sarah licks his palm.
He deposits her onto the ground and she runs into the kitchen, screaming. He rubs his hand on his dirty jeans.
“Tommy. This is my girlfriend,” he sighs, telling him your name, which Tommy repeats as he takes your hand in his (not the one that was just licked by Sarah) and kisses your hand.
“Well, seems you already know my name, sweetheart. It’s a pleasure to meet you after all these months of Joel talkin’ ‘bout ya.”
What you wouldn’t give to be a fly-on-the-wall when Joel talked about you. You knew he’d never speak badly of you– he never spoke badly of anyone, including Tommy–, but you were curious what he could possibly be saying to them, especially the young man in front of you.
“It’s nice to meet you too, Tommy.”
He drops your hand lightly and looks over at his brother. You think you see him wink, but you’re choosing to ignore whatever you just saw. You do, however, see the blush crawling back up Joel’s neck, as you turn back to him.
Joel takes your hand in his. You lace your fingers through his and squeeze lightly, an acknowledgement of his social awkwardness.
“Well, I’m gonna go see if I can help Momma with dinner, see if she can forgive me for dressin’ like an idiot.”
Joel’s lips form a line, “See ya.”
“Oh, brother, you’ve outdone yourself. Don’t know how you managed it.” He points to you, turns on his heel, and walks to the other room.
“I’m sorry about him,” Joel mutters, eyes downcast to the floor.
You shrug, “It’s okay. He seems nice.”
Guiding your shoulder towards him so that you’re fully facing him, he kisses your forehead, “Tell me if this is all too much, okay? Meetin’ my whole immediate family at once is a lot.”
You shake your head, “Joel, I am honored that I get to meet them. It’s a little overwhelming, but I can handle myself– don’t worry about me.”
“Okay, sugar,” he sighs into your hair.
The rest of the night goes off without a hitch. Sarah spends the whole meal screeching and throwing food at her dad. Tommy spends the whole meal laughing at Sarah throwing food at her dad. Joel patiently reminds Sarah that she’s not supposed to throw food, which, of course, she doesn’t listen to and continues to throw food at her dad. And you and Essie are in your own little world, discussing everything from your schooling to how she grew up in Columbia, but met Joel’s father when she moved to the States in 1970. She is an amazing listener and an engaging storyteller, face clearly displaying her emotions as she tells you about her brilliant life so far.
Joel tells you on your walk back to your dorm that he’s pretty sure that his mom likes you more than him now. You joke that you like her better than him too. He groans, “My momma’s gonna take my girl from me.”
“Your girl?”
“Yeah, sugar, my girl.”

April 1995
“Are you ever gonna hang out with me again,” Elaine whines, watching you pull a flannel out of your closet and stuff it in your bookbag next to your books that you’re bringing to study with. It was Joel’s, but it was starting to lose his scent and you were going to demand he wear it tonight so that the leather smell would seep back into the fabric.
“Lane, we hang out all the time.”
Hair fanned out below her in a halo of sorts, Elaine lays on her bed with her head off the side, feet in the air. She scoffs and throws her hands up in exasperation.
“No! That’s not true! You are never here on the weekends anymore and that’s when all the good parties are going on.”
You deadpan, “When have I ever gone to parties with you?”
“You went to some parties!”
“I went to one party and left an hour in because I got completely overwhelmed and started crying after one drink.”
“Okay… but that was freshman year and I bet you could hold your booze much better now that you’re legal.”
“Elaine, baby, sweet girl, love of my life, I do not want to go to a party.”
She pouts and crosses her arms, “Yeah, you wanna go hang out with your boy and his four-year-old all weekend.”
You clear your throat and mutter, “Actually, Sarah is staying with her abuela this weekend.”
Elaine gasps, flipping around and sitting up on all fours, “No fucking way.”
“Yes fucking way,” you reply flatly.
“You are going to be in Joel’s apartment all weekend. Just the two of you.”
“Yup.”
“All by yourselves. For an entire weekend.”
“You just said the exact same thing twice and my answer is still yes.”
She bounds over to you and grabs your face in her hands, “Oh, my sweet baby, you are getting your brains fucked out all weekend, aren’t you?”
“Good god, Lane,” you shake her hands off her face and continue your packing.
She hops in place a couple times, her wild hair doing flips as she does, “You are, aren’t you?! Oh my god. This is so great, I cannot wait for you to tell me every detail when you get back.”
You glare at her for a moment and shake your head, “Fine.”
She shrieks, throwing her arms up in the air and running around your small shared room like she’s doing a victory lap.
Pumping a fist in the air, she flops backwards onto her bed and stares at the ceiling, face suddenly serious. But, you’re used to this by now, her mood changes like the wind– she has some of the most intense ADHD you’ve ever seen.
She raises her hand up.
You sigh, “Yes, Elaine?”
“I have a question.”
She sits up again, hands fidgeting in her lap, “What are you gonna do about Joel when you go back to Seattle for the summer?”
“I–” Oh.
You’d been thinking about summer break constantly since the moment you started dating Joel. It’s been a looming threat over everything you two have shared over the past 6 months, a near-constant reminder that you’ll be leaving to go back to your dad’s house in less than a month. You’d just pushed it to the back of your mind. No one ever mentioned it, so you just never brought it up.
But now that Elaine is here, sitting in front of you, confronting you with something you’ve been avoiding for months, it hits you like a ton of bricks.
“I don’t know.” You sink down into your desk chair, bag slapping on the tile at your feet.
“You really like him– don’t you, baby girl?”
You nod, staring at the floor. Two years of living in these dorms and you’d never noticed how uneven the tile was. You feel your heart beating in your ears.
“You know, you could stay with me and my parents this summer?”
“No, no, I don’t wanna bother them.”
She purses her lips, “Well… I kind of already asked them and they said that it was okay.”
You gasp, turning towards her, “What?”
“Yeah, baby, it’d be like a whole summer of sleepovers, except y’know, you’d have your own room.”
Elaine’s parents were cattle farmers. They owned a small ranch just outside of Austin with a wide expanse of land and multiple small houses throughout. Elaine didn’t live with her parents– she lived in her own small farmhouse about a quarter of a mile down the dirt road that ran through their property. You’d been there before; it was beautiful.
And not having to go back to Seattle: that would be great. If last summer was any indication of your dad’s excitement at you coming home, you had been dreading what this summer would bring.
But here’s an out. A way to avoid your father and his horrible rage. A way to stay near Joel and Sarah. A way to celebrate Sarah’s birthday with her in July like she’d been begging you to.
“Maybe.”
She grins, hands still fidgeting in her lap, but more aggressively like she’s trying to hold herself back from a big reaction to your “maybe”, which you both know just means “yes”.
“Thank you.”
“Don’ even mention it, baby. You’re the love of my life– I couldn’ bear another summer without you.”
Later that evening you're talking to Joel in his apartment over dinner, candles lit between you, Joel snug in your favorite flannel of his. You tell him about Elaine’s idea. He insists that you take her up on her offer. You send her a text that you’re going to stay. She replies with, “!!!” and then another text a few minutes later that reads, “go get sum, bb ;)”.
You make sure Joel can’t see that text.
When you’re done with dinner, you’re doing dishes together. He’s washing, you’re rinsing and drying. When you have dinner here, you switch who does what task– it keeps it fair, that’s what Joel had said when you started coming here a few months ago.
You can’t believe it’s been months with this amazing man. It makes you giddy: that time seems to pass so quickly with him.
He’s been quiet– well, more quiet than usual today. You think it might just be that he misses Sarah, but that theory quickly becomes dust when he finally starts to speak.
He clears his throat and breaks your comfortable silence.
“Talked to Tommy today.”
“Oh, yeah?”
He sniffs, “Yeah.”
“And what exactly did you two talk about?”
You know Joel and Tommy have never exactly gotten along. When you’d met Tommy the month before, that had been blatantly obvious. Joel loved Tommy. They both knew it– they’d never say it out loud though. But, their “talking” usually involved Tommy rambling about whatever he wanted and Joel grunting every other sentence so that he knew that he was still listening.
“He, uh– he says he’s gonna join the army.”
Your head whips towards him, “What?!”
He flattens his lips into a line and sniffs again, nodding.
“Was he fucking with you?”
That wasn’t an uncommon occurrence with Tommy. He regularly said things he knew would make Joel upset just to mess with him. Once, he had told Joel that his girlfriend at the time was pregnant just after his 17th birthday. Joel didn’t talk to him for a couple weeks after that.
He shakes his head, putting the sponge down into the lukewarm water.
Exasperated, you sigh, “Did he say why?”
“Says he wants to honor Dad or somethin’.”
You’d had discussions about Joel’s dad before. They were few and far-between, mostly because it was obvious that his father made him uncomfortable. He had died just six months after Sarah had been born– lung cancer caused by twenty-five years of smoking a pack a day, according to Joel.
Mark was a Vietnam veteran, left home at 18 to join the war effort. He’d met Essie when he was discharged with a prosthetic limb and a purple heart in 1970. Joel doesn’t know exactly what had happened to his dad in Vietnam, but he knew it was bad. He would wake up in the middle of the night to his dad screaming in his sleep– telling someone to move and then begging God to let his friend live.
Joel says he was terrified of his father, that he treated him like a “man” before he was old enough to have coherent conversations. What that meant was beyond you, but you understood that he wasn’t ready to talk about it and you were willing to wait. You would always wait.
“Do you– do you think he’s going to do it?”
He sighs, massaging his temples, “’M not sure. He… seemed pretty determined.”
Picking the sponge out of the water, he goes back to scrubbing, but now he’s doing it rougher, sponge squashed in his hand, dish squeaking aggressively. His eyebrows are scrunched together and you think you see a glint of something shiny in his eyes.
“Miller, what’s going on in that head of yours?”
He hands you the plate he was maiming to rinse and dry. You do so as he collects his thoughts.
Two more dishes are washed and dried before he says anything.
“Dad was a lot more gentle on Tommy than he ever was on me. He treated Tommy like his son, but he treated me like a soldier. Tommy had a dad, I had a General.”
He avoids eye contact with you as he continues.
“I think Tommy idolizes him too much, especially now that he’s gone and he never really saw the version of Dad that I did. The traumatized veteran.”
His shoulders shake as he sobs, choking on his words, “I don’t want Tommy to end up like Dad.”
Fuck, if that didn’t make you want to sob too. You hold yourself together for him, at least you try to. You can feel your emotions climbing up your throat, desperate to choke out of you.
You put a hand on his bicep and lean on his shoulder. The dirty water splashes when the sponge falls back into it, flicking water up and onto both of your shirts
A tear escapes his eye and lands on the top of your head, soaking into your hair.
“Did you tell him that?”
Another sob claws out of his mouth, “Yeah. He wouldn’ listen.”
“Well, baby, you did all you could do. Seems like there’s no stopping him.”
He doesn’t say anything. His wet hand wraps around your forearm and pulls it around his back so that you’re hugging him. You squeeze your arms around his waist as he runs his fingers through your hair, clings on to the strands and guides your head to his neck. You can feel the dish water from his hands soaking into your scalp.
You press a kiss to the skin under your lips and he sighs, pulling you in even closer.
“Things will work out. Whatever happens, I’m always here.”
He nods his head into your shoulder. A high-pitched whine tumbles out of his lips involuntarily.
“It’ll be okay.”
Shit.

July 1995
Friday, July 14th, 1995 marks Sarah’s fifth birthday. She invites all her friends from preschool and Joel invites everyone he knows would want to be there for his daughter. Joel told you that he had gone to text Tommy to invite him, forgetting that his brother had left for basic training a month ago. He sent him a text anyway– asking him how he was doing. He hadn’t gotten a response yet.
When you walked into the apartment, with the key that Joel had given you a month ago, to help Joel and Essie set up the party this morning, Sarah had stopped you at the door with a smirk on her face and something held behind her back.
“Hello, Queen Sugar!” She curtsies to you with her large puffy, pink dress that Essie had painstakingly spent the last month making her.
You curtsy back with your own dress, the purple sundress you had worn to the beach all those months ago, “Hello, Princess Sarah! May I come in?”
You really know she’s up to something when her smirk turns into a maniacal grin.
“No.”
Hm. Where the hell is Joel?
You get down on your knees so that you’re eye-level with her, “Why not, your highness?”
She finally pulls whatever is behind her back out and holds it out to you. It’s the silver plastic crown with the pink jewels that she had worn on her fourth birthday. The one she wears whenever she’s feeling particularly royal. It’d been slightly too big for her then, but it fit her like a glove now.
“Because you aren’t wearing your crown yet. And you know it’s improper to attend a social event as the queen without your crown!”
Well, you didn’t know that. But you knew now. Joel’s doormat was really uncomfortable to kneel on.
“Well, of course, your highness, how could I forget that?”
She nods her head once resolutely.
“But I must ask, why aren’t you wearing a crown?”
She puts her hands on her hips, “I’ve decided that since it is your first Guppy birthday, your majesty, that you must wear the crown! It’s only fair that I share.”
Holding the crown out in front of her, she declares with determination, “All hail, Queen Sugar!”
You hear Essie’s graveled voice call through the apartment behind Sarah, “Mariposa, come help your abuela with decorating your cookies!”
She plops the crown on your head and runs into the apartment, leaving the door wide open. Well, so much for decorum.
“Hey, sugar.” A hand pops into your vision from the stairs beside you.
He’s got a couple bags of decorations in his left arm and is holding out the other for you to take.
“Hey,” you groan as he pulls you up onto your feet, “You want some help?”
“Nah, I got it.” He urges you inside with a wave of his hand and he walks in behind you.
The furniture that usually is cluttered around his living room is pushed to the walls, so that there’s more space for the kids to play. You notice a basket full of her toys sits in wait in the corner of the room, filled past the brim with pink.
“Lovin’ the crown, baby,” he smiles, setting the paper bags on the couch.
It’s crooked, askew from Sarah’s hasty exit.
“Thanks. Apparently I wasn’t allowed to attend a public event without one because it was ‘improper’.” You put quotes on the last words with your fingers.
“Well, if the princess says…” Coming around the side of the couch, he stands in front of you. You look up at him through your lashes as he adjusts the crown so it sits straight on your head. He’s done it enough with his little girl to know how to get it just right so the tight plastic doesn’t dig into your scalp.
“Thank you,” you whisper and press a chaste kiss to his lips.
He chuckles, snaking his arms around your waist, “Anything for the queen.”
You hum as he presses another kiss to your lips, longer this time, soft. You love these moments with Joel– the ones where he’s put himself in the moment, so that he isn’t thinking about the millions of things he needs to get done. But really, you love every moment you get to have with Joel.
“Daddy!” Sarah’s running into the living room with frosting smeared on her hands and all across her cheek and Joel puts himself to work getting it off her in the bathroom as you start to pull decorations out of the bags. Her birthday party this year is Sesame Street themed. When Joel had suggested it to her, she had jumped around the room screeching about all the decorations she needed and where to put them and how she needed to invite Elmo now so he would get his invitation on time. You had been in charge of the return letter from Elmo where he reluctantly declined her invitation with a crude drawing of himself in the bottom corner (Joel didn’t stop laughing at how horrible it looked for a week afterwards, “He looks like he got run over by a semi, baby.”). She wrote him back saying she understood and drew a heart and a smiley face at the bottom.
“Elaine’s gonna be late, she got held up with something.” You tell Joel as you hand him a freshly-blown balloon. He’d gotten the frosting off Sarah and then urged her into a nap so that she could be at full energy for her party.
He chuckles, “Oh, really? And what was that?”
Rolling your eyes, you sigh with a grin, “Robin.”
The mean blonde you had met in November in your dorm room after finding out about Sarah has been slowly worming her way into your heart. While you’ve been spending most of your summer with Joel, Elaine’s been spending most of her’s with Robin, who had stayed on campus this break to take summer classes. At first you’d been hesitant to encourage the relationship, Robin hadn’t made a very good impression, but Elaine seemed really happy, happier than you’d seen her in your entire friendship, and Robin’s grumpy attitude was growing on you.
“Good for her.”
“Yeah, good for her, but not so good for my sleep schedule.”
Turns out living in a house alone with Elaine all summer was great, except for the fact that the walls were a little too thin for your liking. You’d been learning a bit more about Elaine’s sex life than you wanted to know.
You watch as Joel attempts to wrap the string around the knot on the balloon with little success, his large fingers getting in the way of themselves.
“Gimme,” you mumble, holding your hand out.
He reluctantly hands the balloon and string over with a bashful smile.
Deftly, you string the balloon and watch it rise to the ceiling as you let it go. It wobbles back and forth and then finally stays in place.
“You could stay here tonight if you wanted? You’ve got those extra clothes you left in my drawer just in case.”
The drawer.
The drawer had been a very big deal to you when he first offered it casually one night when you’d realized you had forgotten to bring an outfit for the next day.
“You already left a toothbrush here, just leave a couple outfits here too. I’ll clear a drawer for you.”
Joel was very confused when you had started to cry. Through heaving breaths and tears you had explained to him that you had never been given a drawer before.
It didn’t help that you were PMSing really bad that day (which had been the entire reason you had come over in the first place).
You give him a smile, “Yeah?”
“Yeah, baby.”
You know there won’t be any sex, Joel made it pretty clear the first time you had stayed here when Sarah was home that he was not comfortable with that while she was in the apartment. The wall's thinness didn’t leave anything to the imagination and her room was right next to his. That was okay though, you enjoyed sleeping on the heater that was Joel Miller and that was good enough for you.
“Okay.” You stand up and give him a kiss on the cheek.
He pats your ass as you walk towards the kitchen. You send him a glare back with a smirk.
Everyone starts arriving at four, except your best friend, and you watch as Joel tries his best to wrangle six toddlers to do the activities that he’d planned. He bought some coloring books and told the kids to bring their own crayons because he had thought that maybe that would be a calming activity, but as you had predicted two weeks ago when he told you his plan, it had quickly devolved into drawing on the fold out table and somehow finding markers and drawing on each other. You helped him toss the drawing stuff in his room when the kids were distracted by Sarah telling the story of how you had almost “improperly” walked into her birthday party without your crown on. The kids thought she was hilarious.
Sarah is instantly captivated when Elaine walks through the door, like everyone is when they first meet her.
“Your hair is so pretty,” Sarah squeals, balancing on the balls of her feet.
Elaine gasps, a smile lighting up her face as she hands you her bag to put in Joel’s room, “Oh my god, your hair is so pretty too, baby girl.”
“I’m Sarah Esperanza Miller.” She recites her full name with a smile on her face, proud of her name.
Elaine holds her hand out for her to take, “Hi, Sarah. I’m Elaine Jo MacKenzie.”
She perks up, her whole body suddenly standing at attention. “Wait here!”
Elaine grabs your elbow and pulls you into her body, giving you a light kiss on the cheek while you both watch Sarah run to her room across the house– weaving and dodging through the crowd. She peeks around your body to look at Joel, a dreamy grin on her face.
“She’s beautiful, Joel.”
He smiles, running a hand through his hair, “Thank you.”
She looks up at you, “You’re a lucky motherfucker.”
You laugh lightly, “I know.”
She adjusts the crown on your head.
“It’s crooked,” she explains, nodding when she determines that it’s perfect.
You nuzzle your nose into her hair; it smells like strawberries.
“Thank you.”
When Sarah comes back, she’s hiding something behind her back, an excited smile taking over her chubby cheeks.
She goes to Elaine, pulling her arm out of your own and down so she’s kneeling in front of her.
“Can I touch your hair?”
Joel sighs, “Baby, that’s not–”
Elaine doesn’t break eye contact with her as she answers her, “Of course, you can. Thank you for asking. That was really polite.”
Sarah looks up to her dad, silently asking him for permission and he nods his head.
“As long as she says ‘yes’, then it’s okay.”
Elaine nods too when she turns back to her and Sarah tucks Elaine’s puffy mess of hair behind her ear and sticks a small, pink butterfly clip just above her ear. Joel recognizes it as her favorite hair accessory, one of the only ones that Joel can easily style her hair with.
Elaine gasps, jumping up and finding the nearest mirror, and smiles when she sees herself in it. She delicately adjusts the clip so that it is more secure. “Oh, baby girl, I love it! Thank you!”
Sarah giggles uncontrollably, “I knew it would look pretty on you!”
“Well, of course, you knew– you’re a genius, baby!”
She kneels back on the ground and holds her arms out, an invitation for a hug. Sarah runs into her arms and she huffs with the force of her tiny body colliding with her chest.
You knew that Sarah would love Elaine; her eccentric joy was so magnetic that this automatic connection between the two of them just made sense. She had always made friends easily, but Elaine was an expert at entertaining children.
Sarah runs off to go play with her friends, so Elaine comes back up to take your arm again.
“Hey, we’re matching,” she points out, flicking the big jewel on the crown on your head.
“We are.”
Elaine’s eyes soften as she looks down at you, always taller than you when she actually straightened out her spine (which she so rarely did).
“Sarah’s girls.”
You nod.
Sarah’s girls.

Bozeman Half Marathon 2024
Tumblr media
The race starts at 8. The shuttle drops us off at 6:55.
There was a little bit of fucking around too close to start time, so we ended up in the back of the pack. As I break over the start line, it’s immediately clear to me that I am behind people who are shooting for a 2:30 or more time, which is so beautiful and hope they had the best time but all of my encouragements to newer or slower runners immediately die away in a wave of “get the fuck out of my way.” I have never bobbed and weaved as I did here, and I get afraid that I’ll lose my pacer, because I am trying so hard to just get get out of the fracas.
Mile 3. I call out, “What are we sitting at?” “9:05” comes the answer. I’ve been fucking around too much, and make a breakaway in between two runners in front of me. I’ve got to hit harder than this.
My pacer grabs his stomach and steps off to the side.
You’re a beautiful person, but this ain’t ‘nam, and I’m leaving your ass. I will buy you a drink later, salutations and good luck.
I actually start running faster at this point--i hadn’t realized how much I was holding back because I sensed he was struggling and I didn’t want to leave him in the dust. I need something to pace me. My stryd isn’t connecting, i don’t even have a timer watch, and I didn’t set my music to time me like I usually do, until the tornado siren. There are two girls in matching outfits, including pink banana shorts. They’re the ones. They look fast.
If it were not for them, I don’t know that I would have been able to get it back, because they got me into a rhythm of running about a 8:30 mile for two miles, which gave me a huge cushion. Mile 4 and 5 were entirely on their pink-festooned backs. They stopped for water mid Mile 6, and i kept going.
Mile 7: What the fuck have I done wrong in my life, and why is it being visited upon me, the sweetest and most innocent of human beings, right now? There is a long, slow, plodding hill.
There is a moment, in every race I have ever run, called, “What the fuck is my problem?” It is very important to get over the ‘What the fuck is my problem?” hump, because it is my own personal Jesus being tempted by Satan in the desert, with the idea of walking and giving up. Why would I, a sane woman with a loving family, think about running 13 miles and change full send? Did I think that would be fun? What about my life up to that point made me think it would be fun?
We have to attack this little demon inside us. We can always doubt the wisdom of our decisions later, but for now, the only way out is through, and my only reward for slowing down is that I have to be on the course longer.
I round the corner, no longer on the hill, and then from behind me, the sound of a truck, and a voice I ahven’t heard in a while:
“C’mon Doc, let’s fuckin go! It ain’t that far!” I look to my left, and it’s my buddy Jake! I haven’t seen him in a couple years, and he must have figured out it was me by sheer chance of “I bet that little red headed dyke in the unicorn shorts is Doc. She loves to run” and he is correct! He bangs twice on the side of his BLM truck, laughs, revs his engine at me, and drives on down the course.
This carries me for a solid two miles. If your family has been in Montana for as long as both of ours have, it’s hard to hide from each other. Do i want to come across as a little bitch to Jake? Do i want to tell him it was just too fucking hard? Fuck no.
The Tracer voice inside me, “What’s the worst that could ‘appen? Push it!” “We die?” “Not a problem we’d ave to deal with!”
I push. I go. I fly through the cross country kids handing out water. I’m trying to pace myself beside runners just a little ahead of me, runners that look fast and also infuriatingly casual in their matching banana shorts and pink tank tops. They hold me on for the next few miles, but as they start into their negative splits (Unfortunately, they not only look fast, they are fast) they begin to leave me behind.
I have heard the half marathon called “10 decent miles and then the worst 5k of your life” and for me, at the very least, that seems to hold true. I am getting exhausted by the time I hit mile ten, and my form is falling apart. I like like one of those inflatable noodle men, running down the street, limbs flopping. My body is swinging wildly, which is costing me energy, but I can’t stop myself. I’m getting tired mentally and physically.
In  the middle of mile 11, I hit a pothole. I’m not watching what I’m doing, my foot goes directly onto the lip of the pothole and I go careening forward. I know it’s a cliche to say things happen in slow motion, but I swear it must have taken me ten seconds to fall. I had time to think about how I absolutely did not want to hurt my knee, so I, with a reasonable amount of stupidity, put my arm out straight, which keen-eyed viwers will note is a great way to break your wrist. I didn’t, so, unearned victory for me, but I slammed down hard into the asphalt, and threw myself onto my hip.
A struggled for a minute, and then, as I held up my hand to stand, someone grabs it, without breaking his stride at all, and yanks me to my feet.
“We’re fucking doing this!” he yells to me.
And then he continues on. I could have given up, and my pride and my time are badly hurt, but having that moment gives it all back to me. I might not be able to run this in time, but I can run it to the end, and not give up. Giving up isn’t what I do.
Unfortunately, to be the people we tell ourselves we are, we have to make the choices that make us those people. If I am a runner, who doesn’t give up. I need to both run, and not give up. Annoying.
So I keep on. By the time we reach the city proper, I am in mile 12 of 13, and I am well and truly suffering. It hurts so bad, and I want to stop, but I can’t stop, because I am so close, and how much would I hate myself to run all this way and give up now? I can’t walk. I have to keep going.
The tornado siren goes off in my ear. I have ten minutes to cross the finish line before losing my goal. I haven’t hit the final mile yet. This is bad. But the only way to get there faster, is to run faster. I have no idea what I drew on in that moment. But I find something deep inside me, and I yank it out and throw it on the road.
I go down the final pull, praying, waiting for the final turn, where I can see the finish line. That always gives me something more, sets off a firework inside me.
There’s a gal with a sign by the side of the road that says, “ ***ing finish so we can drink!” and, again, it is only through the encouragement of strangers that I have made it through this race at all. I point at her sign and smile, and she yells to me, “You know what I’m talking about! Fuck yeah! Go! Go!”
This last mile is one of the hardest of my life. I just keep having to chant, ‘Right, left, repeat. Right, left, repeat.”
The final turn! I can see the finish line, I only have to run three more stoplights before I make it. I can do it. I kick on the afterburner. I am so close. I’m almost there.
My heart falls when I see the timer. 1:57:40. I’ve already failed. There’s no way I can cross the finish line in 15 seconds. Or can’t I? Fuck it, whatever, I will maybe not make it, but I will run as hard as I can. My hip is screaming, my form is the worst it has ever been, and I don’t care about absolutely fucking any of that, because if I cross even one second under, I will have made PR.
I go.
I cross the finish line, wobbling, half limping, about to throw up. I’ve made my time goal by about 3 seconds. Great. That’s enough. The guy giving out the medals is nice enough to come over and put it on my neck, because I look like I’m suffering as much as I am. The text comes through.
I COMPLETELY FORGOT IT TOOK ME NEARLY A MINUTE TO CROSS THE START LINE. I have made my time by a full goddamn MINUTE. My joy is total. I would jump up and down screaming but I do not have even the slightest amount of energy for any of that. I have a can of champagne in my drop bag, and I am going to go get that, and crush it.
Someday, I’ll stop setting PR, but today is not that day.
Video evidence of my extremely bad finish: You can tell how much I'm favoring my hip, which is making me swing my body WILDLY.

Emotional Support Psychic
Summary: Lassiter had no clue what touch-therapy was, let alone that it even existed. That is, until he saw an ad for one in the newspaper.
Shawn had been hired to be a ‘professional cuddler’ — his words — as a side job when Psych was running low on cases and money.
Notes: thank you psych discord for this idea. Needed to write myself a pick-me-up and you guys came in clutch <3
Also I should say right now that I have no idea where Lassie lives in season 3. I have no clue if he actually does live within a mile perimeter of the station. But it’s whatever, y’know. This is fanfic. So, enjoy lol
Word count: 2,472
—————
Shawn spun around in his rolly chair, legs tucked up against his chest as his hands did all the work, pulling at the desk every once in a while to regain lost momentum. He’d wobbled a few times, but would quickly right himself every time. He hummed a tune under his breath that sounded suspiciously like ‘Around the World’ by Daft Punk.
“Shawn, if you keep doing that, you’re going to puke.” Gus, who was sitting calmly in his own chair, reprimanded. He himself was on his computer, checking emails to see if he’d missed anything from his boss or coworkers.
“My stomach is made of steel, Gus. It’ll take a lot more than this to make me throw up.” It was true. The only times Shawn ever vomited was when someone else did it right in front of him. And even then, it was still a 50/50 chance of him reacting to it.
Gus just rolled his eyes. He knew that Shawn was telling the truth. But just watching him spin around like that was making him feel dizzy and lips tingly with nausea.
A ding from Shawn’s phone startled them both. Well, only a little bit. But that was enough to unbalance him and send him to the floor in a heap. He wasn’t deterred, however, and hopped right up and resituated his chair as if nothing happened.
A quick glance at his screen told him everything. “Ooo, finally!”
“What? What is it?”
“You remember that uh… that hug-therapy thing I put out an application for and got hired?”
“Yeah. And I still don’t get why you did that. Touching random strangers isn’t exactly something that sounds the most exciting. Kind of the opposite, actually.”
“First of all: don’t say it like that. It makes me sound like a prostitute. Nothing against them, that’s their choice of work.”
“Well, you are technically selling your body to people you don’t know.”
Shawn ignored that comment. “And B: That’s where you’re wrong, Gus. All kinds of young, touch-starved hotties who grew up unloving homes need hugs. I’d say that’s not very boring.”
“So, you’re taking advantage of someone in need.”
“Quit twisting my words around, man! You know what I meant.”
Gus clicked his tongue. “Whatever. Why’re you bringing it up, anyway?”
“I just got my first assignment! But it’s anonymous. They’re probably embarrassed about getting a professional.”
“Now look at who’s making it sound weird.”
Shawn just waved him off. “They’ve booked a thirty minute session at their place.” With an address listed, of course. In fact, that was all that was in the small text he’d gotten. No name, not even a gender. Only a time and place. A little weird, but hey, who was he to judge? He was the one that basically signed up for this.
“I don’t like this, Shawn. What if it’s a serial killer?”
“Chill out, Gus. If it is a serial killer, then they’d have to be the dumbest one in the history of ever. The address they gave me is like, four blocks away from the station. If they pull a knife on me I can just run out and grab Lassie or Jules. Or even Buzz, if neither of them are there.”
Gus didn’t look very reassured. “Maybe that’s why they chose that spot. Because no one would suspect somewhere so close to the police.”
“You’re so clinical. You know that, right?”
“You mean cynical. Clinical wouldn’t make any sense in that context.”
“I’ve heard it both ways.”
———
Shawn sped down the road on his motorcycle (Gus refused to let him use the Blueberry). Buildings were a blur, meshing together in his peripherals. As he drove, he checked his watch. 7:13 p.m. Yeah, he was gonna make it.
It was still a little odd to him that the client gave no details other than when and where they wanted the session to take place. Shawn was no expert when it came to this, but he knew some people would at least put in a comment or two about themselves. Heck, maybe even just if they had some topics they wanted to talk about or movies they wanted to watch during their session. He seriously didn’t expect his client to want to just sit there in awkward silence as he snuggled up to them.
So, as he rode, he tried coming up with topics. 80’s movies or shows, if the topic came up. Pineapple? Maybe put that one on the back burner, as a last resort.
What if whoever it was asked why he’d chosen to be a touch-therapist?
He could make up some sob-story about how his parents never gave him enough love as a child and now he wants to give others cuddles so no one would have to feel how he’d felt.
It… actually wasn’t totally far from the truth. He did in fact sign up to work as a touch-therapist as a way to satiate his own touch-starve-ingness. Maybe he should go with that. Makes for a good sob story. But he wouldn’t admit that to Gus, or his dad, or anyone he knew personally, for that matter. All it would do was just open up a whole discussion that he definitely didn’t want to have.
Besides, Shawn didn’t just want this, he was built for this. The stockiness of Shawn’s body didn’t come easy, no sir. It took a lot to go from eating only when he was hungry, to eating regularly scheduled meals and when he was hungry. If that made sense. And it worked, too. He’d gone from being called a twink by random people at bars while he was on the road, to being… healthy. Not so much of a stick, or a walking skeleton. It was also probably how he’d gotten hired so easily, given his extensive resume.
Shawn parked his bike on the curb next to the house. It was nice, the paint was a pretty shade of green, single story but wide enough to look like it could easily house two people with space for other rooms. The yard was decently sized, and the grass wasn’t overgrown. It was all painstakingly tidy. Whoever lived here was probably the biggest neat freak ever-
Then he noticed the red Crown Vic parked in the driveway.
No way. No way. Lassie? Lassie had called and scheduled an appointment with him? The Carlton Lassiter had scheduled an appointment to be cuddled by the fake psychic?
Well, not with him specifically. All assignments were at random, unless special requests were made by the clients. So that meant Lassiter, Carlton Lassiter, had either made a request with such specific details that made Shawn the only candidate, or he just hadn’t cared and Shawn was chosen by some weird stroke of fate.
Either way, Shawn needed the money. And he definitely wasn’t going to turn down the chance at being able to — professionally — cuddle up with Lassiter. This was his dream, since… well, since he’d been manhandled by him during the missing ring case. He just didn’t expect it to come so soon. Or like this.
With that, he shoved his helmet under his arm and walked up to the small porch. Five knocks later, and he heard the sound of footsteps along with Lassiter's voice, muffled by the door that stood between them. “-know I didn’t put a lot of information, sorry about that. Thanks for coming anyways-” The door opened, and there stood Lassiter, in all his two-piece suit glory. Seriously, why was he still wearing that? He stopped mid sentence when he saw who was at the door. “Spencer? What the hell are you doing here, I’m expecting… someone….”
Shawn ignored Lassiter and the look of realization donning his face. “You know, you could’ve just asked if you wanted to snuggle up with me. Not sure why you had to go around this way.” He put on his award winning smile that always made the ladies — and sometimes the guys — swoon.
It had… some effect on Lassiter. It at least made his cheeks go bright red. “No. No no no no no. No way-”
“Wow, I feel so cherished right now Lassie.”
Lassiter’s mouth opened and closed, searching for the right words to say. “Since when do you work for-”
“Since last week. Cases weren’t coming in and Gus and I were running out of money. I saw the ad and went ‘Hey! That’s a job I haven’t done yet!’”
“Doesn’t Guster have an actual job?”
“Yeah? What does that have to do with anything?” Sure, Gus had him claimed on his taxes. But he didn’t rely on him for everything. He used the money they earned on cases to pay for not only part of the rent on the psych office, but also to pay for the rent at his apartment. Or at least, the apartment he was currently living in.
“Well, I can’t have you as my touch-therapist, so you can kindly turn around and pretend this never happened.”
“Okay, ouch.” Lassiter went to close the door, but Shawn quickly stuck his foot in between, jamming it open.
“Spencer, get your foot out of my door!”
Shawn didn’t do that. He continued, “But! But the way I see it, you either kick me out and get assigned with a random stranger. Or, you could let me in and we cuddle for the allotted 30 minutes you’re paying for.”
The door stopped pushing against his foot and was opened once more. Shawn could see the gears turning in Lassiter’s head. On the one hand, Lassiter didn’t look like he wanted to snuggle up to his rival — harsh — but on the other he also didn’t seem too keen on meeting with a stranger. He knew how this worked. Although Shawn had the advantage of knowing the detective, Lassiter was painfully easy to read.
Finally, he gave in. “Take your shoes off, I don’t want you tracking dirt inside.”
As soon as Lassiter’s back was turned, Shawn pumped his fist.
First impression of Lassiter’s house was about the same as his impression of the outside. Extremely tidy, very minimalist. A painting of a gun sprouting roses hung up on the wall caught his eye. Shawn couldn’t help the grin. That painting was so Lassie.
“So.” Shawn averted his eyes from the decor and over to the detective himself, who was sitting awkwardly on the couch. “How… How does this work?”
“I dunno. This is my first session, too.” He didn’t feel too proud admitting that. “But! I have had many a cuddle session with other partners. So this shouldn’t be too difficult.”
“Wait. Partners? Why didn’t you just say girlfriend?”
“Well, just saying ‘girlfriends and boyfriends’ seemed kind of like a mouthful.”
Lassiter didn’t say anything to that, simply nodding thoughtfully.
“Alright. Scooch over, gimme some room.” Shawn moved to push him but was stopped by Lassiter slapping the hands away. Not harshly, but enough to let Shawn know not to do that. He was being paid to cuddle with him, nothing more nothing less.
Slowly, Shawn lowered himself into the cushion next to Lassiter. He was close enough he could feel the detective tense at the contact. This wasn’t going to work. “Okay, look Lassie. I can’t really work my magic with you if you’re gonna sit there all rigid like a stick.”
“Oh, I’m sorry.” Sarcasm dripped from Lassiter’s words.
“Just- loosen up some man! This is a two-person exchange, both parties have to participate.”
Lassiter grumbled before complying, ever so slightly relaxing his tensed up muscles and leaning just a bit into Shawn’s side.
“There you go, Lassie!”
“Don’t demean me, Spencer.”
“I wasn’t! I wasn’t.” Shawn had an idea. Gently, he raised his right arm up and over Lassiter’s shoulder to bring him closer.
Of course, he tensed up again. But after a moment he settled down once more.
“So. Did you have anything you wanted to do?”
Lassiter looked over at Shawn, confused. “What do you mean? I’m paying you to… to uhm…”
“Cuddle. You can say cuddle, Lassie.”
“Mmm yeah, that. I’m not paying you to do anything else.”
Shawn snorted. “What, you thought we were just going to sit here, doing absolutely nothing but snuggle?”
“Yeah, something like that.”
Shawn could only look at Lassiter incredulously. He was being serious. Dead serious. “Wow. Uhm, okay. Hang on, gimme a sec.”
“A- To do what?”
“Trying to think of something to talk about. I am not going to be sitting here in silence. That’s torture.” He sat for a moment longer, searching for a topic he and Lassiter could both relate to. What would that even be? So far, all Shawn knew about the detective was that he liked his job just a little too much to be considered normal, along with a love for firearms. Two things that he didn’t exactly feel like talking about.
Wait, actually…
“So, remember when Gus and I went down to Camp Tikihama?”
Lassiter furrowed his eyebrows. “Yeah, didn’t you have to call O’Hara because there was a serial killer? That happened yesterday, of course I remember it.”
Shawn smiled to himself. Perfect. He had something to talk about now. “Well…”
———
Light streamed through the Psych office windows as Gus walked in, carrying his case full of experimental medications. Shawn had told him they had finally had a case, and he was on his way over with the file he’d gotten from the chief.
Gus set his case down next to his desk and sat down, opening up his laptop. Might as well check his emails while he was waiting for Shawn. The fake psychic was notorious for being later than he said he would be. Unless that thing included food. Shawn would always make an exception for food.
But he found himself unable to stop looking over at his friend’s desk. The clutter was really getting to him. He hated that Shawn couldn’t just pick up after himself. There wasn’t really any point to it, anyways. It just looked messy and made stuff get lost.
He could just… organize it. Not much, only a little bit. Maybe straighten up the newspapers into a neater pile and line up the small toys Shawn kept. Nothing too serious.
So that’s exactly what Gus got up to do. But of course, he was stopped by the sight of a check of all things sitting dejectedly and slightly covered up by a newspaper from last week. One glance at what was written on the check was enough to get Gus to grab his phone and dial his friend’s number. “Shawn, why do you have a check written out to you for ‘Services’?! And why is it from Lassiter?! What services did you do for Lassiter?!”
