In light of the Dragon Age writers being let go, I’m coming out as hope-pilled. What really resonated with me about the game is the general message about kindness and turning to others with respect and care.

I have never understood a character more than during the prologue when Varric wanted to talk Solas down. Objectively a bad decision, but my sentimental heart ate that stuff up. I’m going to use Solas as an example because he’s a character I never liked or cared for. However, there was something about Rook going out of their way to finish what Varric started and stop Solas in a non-violent and kind way that made me spend hours doing the Regrets of the Dread Wolf quest.

Rook is a character who has zero reason to engage with Solas in any meaningful way, and as a player, you don’t even have to. But after a while, I was so taken by the general concept of the game that I was determined to hug the evil out of Solas. And both Inquisition and Veilguard make it seem like Rook is the only one who could do it. Not because they’re “the chosen one,” but because of how they look at the world.

What I’m trying to say is that if Veilguard is the last DA game ever made, for me, it’s the DA game that left me with a lasting impression a decade after I picked up Origins. I recognize it’s not the concept a lot of people wanted, but I spent the last three hours of the game crying.

rook falling asleep on the red couch in the lighthouse dining room while lucanis is making dinner....... they were helping out by keeping him company and peeling and chopping potatoes for a while there but then the potatoes are done and the room is so safe and warm and smells like coffee and good food and lucanis is trying to explain something to spite and his voice is low and soft and good to listen to and rook's eyes only slip closed for a moment. they'll get up to save the world again or whatever in a second just. one moment. while the world is warm and kind. and then they're being shaken gently awake an hour later because it's time to eat and everyone's starting to drift hopefully dinner-wards

there's this... idea/concept that keeps swirling around in my head of rook going down lethally injured in combat. and spite and lucanis as one voice going 'no. nope. nah. quite simply nuh-uh' but like on a level that reverberates through the real world and the fade because of their soul Situation, so when they wrap rook up in wings and arms and cradle them against them to just -- hold rook's soul in place in their body until emmrich can arrive with the emergency spirit healing of all time to anchor them safely back in the world of the living without the need for spite life support... it actually somehow works, and they're safe and awake and still breathing against lucanis' chest by the end of it all.

it's definitely a one-time trick lucanis has no fucking clue how he even pulled off afterwards, once the 'I can see the weave of the world' flow state has faded, and no one has any good explanation for how it could even be possible, outside of the fact that no spirit and person have ever been so completely and cleanly unified to one purpose before lol. but with rook still walking about safe and sound and already cracking bad jokes, i don't think anyone would particularly care

Thinking about how Liston and Emmrich would work out, I feel like it could be quite funny because on the surface Liston seems like an absolute freak but in reality he’s into pretty normal stuff whereas to me Emmrich gives the first impression of someone who’s probably a bit shy about those things but he’s actually into some really bizarre stuff. Y’know.
