Even more cult talk - Andromeda's end goal
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So on my possession lore page, I talked all about Friedkin's end goal with his cult and experiments. He wanted an empty brainwashed shell mainly for his son's spirit, but that failed more or less. I mean to be fair, it worked in a way that Lance was turned into a suitable vessel susceptible for saying yes to a possession. But the point is that the possession's actually keeping him aliveand conscious instead of an empty shell the way he would be without Azathoth inside his brain like a mental plug. Friedkin wanted his son back, that failed, but what worked was that something got inside a living body anyway.
Andromeda and the modern 2000s cult have no interest in a brainwashed empty shell or bringing back any dead anymore. All they want is to literally release Azathoth into the world without a vessel needed anymore, be that Collingwood/a building or a body/Lance. They don't want him without a personality and any aspirations of his own, they don't want his body, they want what's inside and thus, they want him dead. They believe that the only way to unleash Azathoth is to physically kill its host so that it's forced to jump ship again just like it did when Collingwood aka its previous vessel burned to the ground.
If Lance were to die, here's the thing though - Azzy wouldn't leave his body. It would remain in there, 100% pilot it, and try its damn hardest to get him back somehow. Because the 'neat' part is that they're co-dependent in order to fully function. Without a proper vessel like that, Azzy is toast, too. With the body dying off and no other suitable vessel to be found (which is incredibly hard to do and exactly why it's so obsessed with hm in the first place), it'll just burn right through it and eventually, fuck right back off into its state prior to its awakening.
I play around a bit with the stuff Derleth added to the lore as in that the reason why Azathoth is considered 'the blind idiot' is that it was cast out, blinded and incapacitated literal eons ago for whatever reason. So in a way, it is similiar to Lance with the after effects of his lobotomy. I don't play into the 'if it wakes up, everyone's toast' lore, I like the idea of it having been knocked down a bit.Because otherwise the possession wouldn't make sense to begin with. Whether killing Lance would still end with it fucking the whole world up with its powers (time and space going whack because of it, similar to a black hole destroying everything it crosses paths with), whether that's intentional or not is left to be determined, but I hc that by the end of it, it'll just snap right back to wherever it came from and that's it.
And that's a good enough bet for Andromeda and what's left of Friedkin's cult. They are only interested in spreading total chaos and insanity. They think that by letting Azathoth loose and letting it fully unleash its effects on the world, they'll achieve just that. The thing with chaotic evil parties though is that neither of them have any interest in truly working together for a common goal. Meaning that Azathoth doesn't care about what its worshippers want, and its worshippers don't really care what it wants. So that's a fun little tid bit I felt like writing about.
In a nutshell. 100 per cent Azathoth inside the body is a pretty shitty idea. It will be pissed off as hell. It'll just fuck up the timeline even more by finding a way to undo the death and bring him back. They'll always be a package deal, but the cult doesn't care. So the hunt and chase just keeps going and going, and Azathoth's actually siding with Lance on the whole topic, which is kinda funny. It thinks that ending the whole world in an instance is utterly boring. It wants more people to fuck with, sure, but not all of them. It has come to like traveling among humans and preying on their emotions and weaknesses. It digs the easy food supply and wants to keep everything just the way it is.
